wait, what? who? WHO THE FUCK IS FURTHER? I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THESE ASSHOLES? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? FUCK THIS FESTIVAL IF THAT IS TRUE.

I clearly wasn't paying attention to any of the previous talk of this band.

Further would be dope and I hate the greatful dead. I think the main thing having the chance to see something somewhat legendary at a fest like this and remaining members of the Dead in Golden Gate Park is something that should universally be thought of as cool. Either way that you spin it KOL, Phoenix, MMJ and a possible Arcade Fire cant hold a candle to the last headliners or even the last 2nd tier people. Are they popular, hell yes, are they 2 nights of headliners, no way in hell. Put one of those bands as the opener for a band like Further or DMB or Stevie Wonder or Bob Dylan and then you got something. And whats with everyone getting all pissy at something that should be thought of as a good discussion? Im going to the fest either way and im not gonna bitch either way but people sure as hell have the right to express an opinion. I guess that forums for ya.

you know what's funny? DMB, The former members of the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan all headlined one particular festival. You know which one? Rothbury. Do you know what happened to Rothbury? Yea.....

Very true regarding Rothbury, but I cant say Ive heard anyone say Rothbury was anything less than spectacular. I think its safe to say issues with the township and the shaky cash flow situation from the start had more to do with the festivals demise than anything

shaky case flow issues have been resolved by backing your festival up with solid line ups. osl has not had a solid line up that people flocked to. the biggest day they've had so far was because of radiohead. all other days have had much less attendance (and that is just based on the numbers put out by the festival and media outlets in the bay area). DMB is a much bigger draw on his own. The former dead members and Bob Dylan aren't popular enough to headline major festivals.

Further isnt a big enough draw unless your fest is located in SF and held at GG Park

well I certainly won't be attending this festival unless the subs are stellar. Which Phoenix and MMJ are the only ones I want to see at this point.

There was nothing "shakey cash flow" about rothbury. The location of paying off townies was the issue.

I love my dirty hippie music but Furthur does not excite me. It still has potential to be a lot of fun though with the right crowd and enough acid. Im anxiously waiting the full lineup, i dont like the little leaks

Everyone lies. This is an excellent line-up for a sf festival. I'm seriously considering it. I just know what could happen with that park those fences and coachella fans, radiohead year was outrageous, strong line up and it might not be worth it.

I'd be fine with Furthur headlining as long as the subs were right. I'd rather they go for someone bigger but I'm lowering my expectations this year. This would be my best chance to see Furthur since I normally wouldn't see them, so it's good with me.

Some hipster on Bart last night told me I have to see Phoenix, so I'm getting excited for that too.

edit: um, dorkfish, when they say headliners are furthur, kings, phoenix and al green that does not mean Furthur are the other main headliner. It means they're one of the highest billed bands but it doesn't necessarily make them the top 2.

Kings of Leon, Al Green, and Phoenix are all playing on Sunday. My Morning Jacket wouldn't headline over Furthur in San Francisco.

im not big on Further but its a excellent pick for SF. they will get 30K there easily. MMJ would be a perfect compliment or vice versa so its shaping up to be a good lineup for SF...

Someone brought up the partnership with the mile high fest in CO.... Cypress Hill is playing that on the 14th does that completely take them and slightly stoopid and collie buddz out of the picture. When I didnt notice any thing bay area on that big tour I thought they might bring that to outside lands. Collie Buddz is surprisingly popular in the bay area

There's really no more effective way of keeping me at home than booking Furthur as a headliner. Seeing Primus that Sunday in SB... a band I'd rather see than any of the OL lineup so far. Maybe next year, if the fest is still around.

Not that anyone cares about this but I cant tell anyone else so here it goes. Got engaged in SF on Independence Day 2 yrs ago. Got the new wife a trip to SF for a first anniversery present. Shes a dead, black crowes, govt mule chic, ima a 2pac, wu tang clan, murs suburbanite. Got eager beaver tix to OL with the expectations of sampling some of calis best wine and other fine homegrown. Find out that I got a couple of people to see in Nas/jr gong and Black Star and she gets to see remaining members of the dead in golden gate park. For a couple cheeseheads in the Packer state this is about as good as it gets. Cant drop the news until the 19th of next month so I gotta tell someone and I guess yall are that someone. Thats it, let the ridicule reign but I had to tell someone. Later yall, happy memorial day

Are you sure those are the headliners? I thought the point of headliners was to sell tickets??!!??

KOL are selling out arenas, and amphitheaters. How do people still doubt their ability to sell tickets? I know people on this board loathe KOL, but they are the hottest band in the U.S. right now. Also a band like Further will get all the dead heads to come out. You then also throw in Phoenix, MMJ, Al Green, Nas, Blackstar, you have a solid selling card. You are thinking too hard about this guys, they will do just fine. I'm sure Dorkfish, and Blackswan will back me up on this, being they are from SF.

Kings of Leon are NOT *NOT* NOT the hottest band in the U.S. right now. Period. End of story.

Hell, they're not even as hot today as they were a year ago at this time. I can get tickets to their SoCal shows just by going to Ticketmaster - Pearl Jam, Muse, Roger Waters... these are your hot bands, the bands who sell out so quickly they need to add shows to appease the public.

This is not a bash on KoL, just stating facts.

Rosemont17
05-29-2010, 03:59 PM
but KOL is a good headliner for this festival... they fit just like they did at ACL last year..

its gonna sell very well this year.. it looks like all festivals are doing pretty good. even Rock on the range broke attendance records and they had Limp Bizkit as a headliner so people are showing up and if it is Further for OSL, its a perfect fit for a SF festival.. its gonna sell this year...

San Francisco is a different type of music town. It's important to keep that in mind when reading about this lineup.

Once someone pointed out that it was former dead members I figured it was a good bet. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth and is still more of a gamble then anything else.

That same quote could be used for Denver.

I think that these headliners are a good call for APE. Now they are not what I would pick but with exception of KoL I am digging every band so far. I think that APE is doing a good job of appealing to the SF music crowd so far.

It's unfortunate that we leave in a town where the mainstream taste is a bit crunchier. But the undercard should have some awesome stuff.

Lineup's out in less than 24 hours!

Yup!! Here comes the overwhelming disappointment!! Followed by weeks of posts from people trying to justify that it is "actually" a strong lineup because they already bought their tickets. This fest is unfortunately dying the same way Vegoose did. It's too bad though, I love having two great fests in Cali every year. Two things have effectively killed OSL. 1) Mediocre lineups for the past two years. 2) Very little repeat customers because the layout is an absolute nightmare. You can always go to Coachella and have a great time because of the setup, even if you're not thrilled with the lineup. The same can not be said about OSL. Sadly, I bid yee farewell OSL. Year 1 was a blast, but you dug your own grave with Tenacious D, KOL, and Furthur the past two.

This is all a rehash of what I've read on here.

Outside Lands lineup leaked in both Rolling Stone and Spin
By Ian S. Port, Monday, May. 31 2010 @ 11:38AM

This is almost too neat to be an accident. The Outside Lands 2010 lineup was supposed to be a secret until tomorrow, but both Spin and Rolling Stone broke the two-day festival's headliners in issues that dropped last week.

SFist has the full run-down on the Spin leak, which came not in the form of an ad (as was originally reported) but rather in a blurb in the magazine's summer festival guide that mentions Kings of Leon, My Morning Jacket, Phoenix, The Gossip, Al Green and Black Star.

Meanwhile, the June 10 issue of Rolling Stone, which hit our mailbox last Wednesday, includes a festival guide with a neato map that mentions Furthur -- the new band of Grateful Dead figureheads Phil Lesh and Bob Weir -- along with Phoenix, Kings of Leon and Al Green as headliners for Outside Lands. The map is on page 36 of the issue with Russell Brand writhing on the cover.

Curiously enough, the two mags don't agree on ticket prices... or dates. Spin says ticket prices are "to be determined" -- and that the festival runs from August 13-15. Rolling Stone writes that tickets will run from $75 to $140, and correctly gives the festival dates as August 14 and 15.

The full Outside Lands lineup will be unveiled tomorrow. Here's hoping for some more exciting additions.

Every Deadhead has heard of them, and pretty much anyone in the jam band/festival circuit as well.... but nobody in the real world knows (or cares) who they are.

The Grateful Dead are legends by reputation - most younger people couldn't name one of their songs, let alone keep track of their offshoot bands. That doesn't mean they're not a draw, but they're not well known by regular humans. None of my real-life friends have any idea who they are, but in having an office conversation about them, a Deadhead wandered up, having just heard their name.

"Furthur" will be a hot Google search term at this time tomorrow, that's all I'm saying.

no they haven't been selling out arenas. granted, i LOVE Furthur (just went to Furthur Festival, it was kickass!), but they arent selling out arenas.

they play auditoriums and theaters with maybe 5-7k tops. their festival only brought in 8,500 I believe?

however, my friends have heard me telling them all about Furthur for the past months, and they are excited at the prospect of catching them in Golden Gate Park. i think if Furthur is a headliner, OSL will really push the "Grateful Dead music in Golden Gate Park in the middle of San Francisco" concept to grab people's interests, because its true, most people have never heard of Furthur. except its also true that most people in the bay area have probably heard of them, and this IS a Bay Area festival!

When you become an artist that is known to attract a certain audience, it becomes both a blessing and a curse; a blessing because it's a fairly loyal audience, but a curse because it creates this fanbase that, to be honest, is only there to see that artist and nobody else. I mean, it's pretty much the same argument being made in the numerous other threads about the crowd at Coachella this year (the underage raver crowd pertaining to Tiesto and Guetta) and given how lazy the crowds are at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festivals I've attended, I can just picture myself spending most of my day trying to step around balding stinking hippies all day instead of seeing the (honestly) 2-3 artist on the bill I'd actually pay to see.

Not worth it.

I'm not sure what your point is here, since HSB is free. and HSB is a really good festival for its genre. And its audience is definitely not strictly hippies. There are dozens of artists from the 09 lineup I would have loved to have seen (and have paid $ to have seen in the past).

can't say I'm super stoked on this, but for the $115 I paid, I think it will be a very fun weekend. I know it doesn't hold up to other festival line-ups this year, but it is what it is and it is in Golden Gate Park. perhaps not a destination festival like the promoters may have dreamed when they locked down Radiohead and Beck for the first day of the first year of the fest, but still a good summer weekend in a great city. hope at least the locals will show up.

HSB being free was kind of an aside to my point, Tom. What I was saying is that, having been to HSB two years straight (and having missed Bonnie "Prince" Billy because so many goddamn people were laying down in the grass that you couldn't even move up to earshot of his stage), it'd take more than the current lineup to get me to pay for that.

Plus, you take the old person factor and ratchet it up to code Dead Head when you factor in Further and it makes for the very real possibility of an unpleasant experience.

Also, have they fixed the sound issues that plagued the festival in 2008?

I'm more than happy. Only $70 to see beats antique, pretty lights, bassnectar, gogol bordello, mmj, and the strokes all in the same day!?!? Only shitty thing about the fest will be the conflicts. You guys think bassnectar and Empire of the Sun will get night slots?

Ideally, saturdays main stage would go gogol bordello-> The Strokes-> Levon Helm -> Furthur. With MMJ playing levon helms spot from 7:00 to 9:00 Elsewhere. Bassnectar then closes after MMJ at that same stage. Thus I could see gogol, the strokes, MMj and bassnectar without any conflict and only having to switch stages once.

well, since they got a bunch of other bands on the cheap (Pimps of Joytime, Garage a Trois, etc), they may not even need 40k to break even. the proof of your statement will be known come 2011. unless this eventually becomes a one-day EVENT, it's apparent this festival is on life support.

Not a bad lineup by any means, but easily their weakest one so far. But that's the idea, now, it's designed entirely for bay area residents, not for people to travel to. Which makes perfect sense.

I'm considering going on Saturday because I think the three main acts would be worth shelling $75 for (as long as they don't conflict) and I will be in the area around then... but it's amazing to me how there isn't a single artist in the undercard I even have a passing interest in checking out...

Parking Passes are only for people who buy VIP. VIP is worth it if you don't give shit about money, or you don't pay the full price. When the festival was 3 days VIP was $600 or $700 plus, so if you love the line up and have the money to burn, it's worth it for $395.

Headliners = no thanks at first glance, but I may be pleasantly surprised when the time comes?! time will tell, expectations are low for now. Although there is about 5 solid bands for me each day, I'm nervous b/c they are all more or less next to each other on the lineup, raising the risk for brutal conflicts. I hope they can stagger these acts better on the schedule than how they appear on the lineup but I'm not holding my breath. I may have to wait for the schedule to come out this time before committing. Very excited for Wolfmother and Empire of the Sun (apparently my artist requests on the OSL survey didn't fall on deaf ears, sweet! Too bad they couldn't get my other 3 choices (Beastie Boys, Jamiroquai, and Daft Punk) although those 3 were stretching it big time!

Since there is no message board page on OSL site anymore? I'm hoping that Ranger Dave and Co. is looking for feedback/suggestions on here since this is a good size forum for the festival, just as Goldenvoice does for Coachella.

Ideal schedule for me would be to see the following: If more than a couple of these start conflicting per day I may have to pass unfortunately.

Further=>Strokes=>Wolfmother=>Gogol Bordello=>Pretty Lights=>Bassnectar

KOL=>Phoenix=>Al Green=>Damien Marley/Nas=>Empire of the Sun=>Chromeo=>Edward Sharpe

I'm also hoping they add another 10-15 acts per day (third and fourth liners especially ONLY in order to conflict with who I already really want to see!

Sunday, on the other hand, is a steamy puddle of piss.

Sunday, on the other hand, is a steamy puddle of piss.

I feel the exact opposite way. I am in for something like Janelle Monae>Chromeo>Empire of the Sun>Al Green>Nas & Damien Marley>Phoenix.

You should check out Beats Antique on Saturday.

Are you seeing Empire of the Sun anywhere else?

HandBanana
06-02-2010, 10:48 AM
Sadly no.
We are doing Hard Summer in August so we'll be back up here by the time they play down there and Lollapalooza has pretty throughly meh'd me out for the most part.

The shitty thing is that to see EotS at all we will most likely be forced to endure a 40 minute daytime set in the worst possible setting for seeing an EotS show. Geh.

06-02-2010, 10:53 AM
Yeah, definitely unfortunate. I just asked and that will probably be the case.

i like my MMJ with shrooms but acid could work just fine. so is it possible that MMJ could be playing at against Further? their set needs to be at least 2 hours

The two jammy acts against each other? Doubt it. Expect an hour for MMJ.

Haha I feel the opposite. They did a pretty good job of balancing out the lineup, forcing you to go both days or none at all.

Lt. Bowie
06-02-2010, 02:47 PM
Outside Lands doesn't space out their sub-headliners that well from what I remember. What do we think the odds are that MMJ and Strokes play at the same time? That would be horrendous.

btw, if the advance tix are still available by the end of the week, that should tell ya something how well this dog is selling. but, the promoters can just play with this discount-level stuff to give the appearance that it's selling by yanking them at any time. last year, the 2nd level pricing tix remained available up through the end of the fest.

it's a fine line between perception and reality though....yank the discounted tix too early and sales will just cease altogether.

unit300021
06-02-2010, 04:55 PM
Yeah I think the "advanced" tickets is more of a scare tactic to try and get people to buy tickets earlier then later. Like you said last years advanced tickets never went up in price. I had a friend buy them at the advanced level three days before the fest.

06-02-2010, 09:57 PM
really?! that surprises me.

if i'm not doing anything better that weekend, i may look for some cheap tix and show up. i'm really not that inspired by this lineup though.

Well ill break it down this way. These are the bands/people on the lineup thats I've heard of before this (Yes, I am young and only started caring about music 3 years ago)

Sat: The Strokes, Wolfmother, Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Beats Antique
Sun: Kings of Leon, Phoenix, SD, Al Green, EofS, Chromeo, Nas&Damian, Edward Sharpe, Temper Trap,

and here is who I'd be excited to see based on knowing their songs or seeing them before.

The Strokes, Wolfmother, Phoenix, Social Distortion, Al Green, Empire of the Sun, Edward Sharpe, Temper Trap

Sunday wins based solely on the fact that there are more than 2 bands I want to see

i haven't. i was referring to her appearance on Letterman. i was basing my impression entirely on that (which likely isn't very fair). is my take of her music style accurate (pretty much that type of r&b) or is there more to it?

thanks for posting those, BS. i have respect for her talent/voice (and those sparkling, straight teeth!) but she just doesn't float my boat. (modern) r&b is a tough genre for me.

however, if i end up hopping the fence at OSL i'll come find you and the missus to boogie down.

Janelle Monae was the first act I saw at Bonnaroo last year. She has a great voice and her music is fun. The set wasn't anything amazing, but it was a fun way to kick off the festival. I wouldn't go out my way to see her again, but if she was at a festival where no one was conflicting with her, Id check her out again.
