You guys are crazy. There is no way Lady Gaga is headlining a night of OSL.

Do you not think they're able to or that she just isn't what that festival is about?

I think the latter is what BS meant.

Aww, Chris. You know me so well.

Also, she is playing two nights at HP Pavilion the Monday and Tuesday after Outside Lands, so Lt. Bowie, it's a completely dumb suggestion on all levels.

Through the inconsistency of the first OSL to the second, I don't really know what they are about...but they did get Black-eyed Peas and M.I.A. last year...

This is a better thread. Thanks dorkfish. Lady Gaga is in San Jose on August 16th. So maybe--

Friday ?? (someone old probably)
Saturday 14th Lady Gaga
Sunday 15th Kings of Leon

I'm the hugest fan of either. But if this is any indication, then
2008>2010>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>2009

Lady Gaga and KOL to headline??? really???

vs.

Radiohead, Tom Petty and Jack Johnson
and
Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band and Tenacious D/Beastie Boys

I just don't see how Lady Gag and KOL would be big ticket sellers for APE.. maybe I'm taking crazy pills or something.

Granted, music fests are usually about the second, third and fourth headliners that attract most people..

Honestly, I could see someone like Paul McCartney (2 HB shows, and no nor cal, also playing Hard Rock in London), Peter Gabriel (HB LA show set), Simon and Garfunkle (no nor cal dates yet for tour). but like i said, maybe i'm taking crazy pillz!

Haven't we asserted that Macca is an acceptable rumor and it's okay to get our hopes up, because he announced no northern california dates? The fact that OSL is lagging on announcing their dates could mean they are still working things out with him, right?

seyrnon

it could, but it probably doesn't. after seeing the headliners last year once the beasties were taken off I expect nothing better than Jack Johnson, Insane Clown Posse, and my dead uncles schmegma to headline

will you shut the fuck up already. you don't know shit about shit.

i don't even know why i'm even wasting my time addressing your nonsense, but that huge fanbase for gaga does not have the equivalency for an outdoor festival. think about it for a bit. that's not the demo to shoot for because they won't respond. seeing her INDOORS, with seats, with all the easy amenities is one thing. gaga fans are not much of festival people (and don't tell me about Lolla...she's got no other Chicago dates and OSL is not comparable to it). i have faith that the APE folks possess the business acumen to know this.

obviously we know that KoL is the sunday headliner. Green Day is a solid pick for the 2nd. as for the third...i'm going to bet it will be someone like The Dead or something else involving Phil Lesh.

The Gaga fans not being festival goers doesn't mean anything. There are tons of people (not necessarily within her fanbase) who'd pay to see her live at a festival. They wouldn't pay the high price for a scalper ticket...especially if OSL gets her. I don't see how you can argue that she wouldn't sell. Her show may not translate as well on an outdoor stage, but IF they can get her, it'd be a hit.

what about the smashing pumpkins? Apparently they only have 2 scheduled shows so far this year. They are playing in japan on august 7th and 8th. I could see it happening and I actually think itd be pretty cool.

Bands that I'd love to see who don't have touring conflicts are:

The Flaming Lips
The Arcade Fire
neil young
my morning jacket
the rolling stones
roger waters
massive attack
soundgarden

TFL put on an amazing show last year at Treasure Island. Would like to see them again.

never seen Aracde, but lot of my friends have seen them live several times and say they are amazing.

Neil really needs to play a big show here in the bay area besides BSB.

Technically plausible:
Al Green - Friday available (if Vegas is considered close)
Atmosphere - Open Fri/Sat. Playing Mile High Festival in CO.
Bassnectar - Open Fri/Sat. Playing Mile High Festival in CO. His show in May is the only Mezzanine show that APE is promoting currently.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Playing Pickathon in Oregon week before festival
Buddy Guy - Opening for BB King.
BB King - Sunday open. Unlikely, because I can't imagine him playing 5 dates in a row.
Chris Isaak - Sunday open. Traveling from Portland to Livermore. Local boy, kinda.
Cypress Hill - Open Sunday. Playing Mile High Festival in CO.
Harry Connick Jr. - In LA Friday/Saturday, only Bay Area date at Mountain Winery
Jenny Lewis - touring with Levon Helm Band, open dates
Jimmy Cliff - Open Friday. In California. Popular festival booking this year.
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - Open dates. Traveling from Costa Mesa to Portland.
Lady Gaga - Unlikely, but Sat/Sun open. Touring from Vegas to San Jose.
Keane - Open Fri/Sun. Playing Mile High Festival in CO.
Kings of Leon - Pitchfork says that they're playing Sunday
Leslie Stevens And The Badgers - tour ends in Portland before weekend
Levon Helm Band - Open dates between Vancouver and LA during weekend
Los Lonely Boys - Unlikely, but Sunday open. In CA.
Mayer Hawthorne and the Country - Open Fri/Sun. Playing Mile High Festival in CO.
Megafaun - Playing Pickathon in Oregon week before festival
My Morning Jacket - Open Fri/Sat. Playing Mile High Festival in CO.
Nas and Damian Marley - Open Fri/Sun. Playing Mile High Festival in CO. Playing APE venue in the spring.
Phoenix - No Sunday date. Playing Mile High Festival in CO.
Rodrigo Y Gabriela - Open dates all weekend, in CA on Monday after.
Rush - Unlikely since they're playing Shoreline, but open date and in Vegas that weekend
Semi Precious Weapons - Unlikely, but opening for Lady Gaga
Seu Jorge - One off in LA added on Saturday.
Slightly Stoopid - Open Sunday. Playing Mile High Festival in CO.
Steve Miller Band - Open Fri/Sun. Playing Mile High Festival in CO. Tour dodges Bay Area, oddly.
These United States - Playing Pickathon in Oregon week before festival
Throw Rag - One off in Seattle on Friday
Weezer - Open Fri/Sat. Playing Mile High Festival in CO.
Weird Al - playing Costa Mesa on Saturday/Sunday, no Bay Area dates
Z-Trip - Open Fri/Sat. Playing Mile High Festival in CO.
ZZ Top - playing Costa Mesa on Sunday, no Bay Area dates

No chance:
John Mayer - Out of the state all weekend
The Avett Brothers - opening for John Mayer, out of state all weekend
The National - Out of state all weekend
Train - Out of state all weekend

Well, Green Day is playing Saturday on the East Coast, so I would call them less likely, only because they'd either have to fly all of their equip/crew from East to West and back to East, playing three days in a row, or hire double crew and double equipment for a one-off in San Francisco.

that's promising...unless, of course, they bring in another lame act like Tenacious D.

how anyone on this board, let alone in their 20's, would get excited about a boring as fuck crappy skeleton of a totally irrelevant band to headline a major urban festival in a major city only serves to rest my case.

give it up dude....go to the OSL board and do your pumping there. you're (which means "you are", fyi) doing it wrong in this one.

Not sure what age as to do with music. I've always found music to be timeless. But hey, that's how I was raised. Maybe you could slam on that for a few posts. Or you can part some elderly wisdom upon us younger folks.

no i'm not, i fucking live here. the Dead is dead...time to move on. Even Colorado Ron is over them for fux sake.

the only way anything phil lesh-related would be even mildly interesting is if they had Animal Collective play right before them with "Why Would I Want Sky" in their set. And, then...maybe only if AC walked on when Phil sang "Unbroken Chain."

but, i know that's not happening, so we're back to Outside Lands Snorefest.

dude, it's not the fucking Grateful Dead. Jerry died years ago. it's a shame that you and some others in your generation missed seeing them. i feel your pain (well, sorta...you didn't miss much).

look, if these guys want to make this a relevant, PROFITABLE festival to fill the park for however many years that ridiculous contract they negotiated with the City goes for, they need to give up on the 60's hippie demographic (that is growing smaller and smaller every day) and focus on people in their 20's/30's and the international "punter" (which they have the upper hand with, being that it's in SF)....you know, people who are alive, ambulatory, not fucking deaf. those are the people that are going to actually make the effort.

having The Dead/Further/any other lame configuration of such headline a day of OSL makes this statement to the fans and artists - "we don't care that we have one of the best venues on the planet, we just want to relive 1968 year after year and what's happening now means very little to us."

ditch Phil Lesh and get someone relevant. next fucking topic!

I would not feel bad skipping this.

:) I missed out on the jam band naming post-fest and that's the last one I could think of.

I don't actually like jam bands, including the Dead, but I've been told by several hippies to see them live. But I wasn't really pulling for them for personal reasons, I just think they'd be a viable headliner - one that wouldn't work for Coachella. I agree that they shouldn't aim for these types of headliners as a rule.

personally, I understand the need to book crunchy and/or tired Bonnaroo acts. It will sell a few thousand tickets on its own, and I'm sure that the cost of booking said acts is easily recouped by those sales. On paper, I could care less about said acts, but in practice, I'd probably watch them given no better conflicts on the other stages.

That said, I'm looking to see who is actually available, touring, etc, and I'm constructing the "just book this and win" best case scenario. I'm sure APE is more or less done booking the festival, but if they're just noodling around looking to copy and paste a list to use for booking, mine will be a gem.

so you haven't seen them live yet? just wait. her guitar playing reminds me of a blend of Erika Wennerstrom (Heartless Bastards) with some Annie Clark (St. Vincent). she's a solid songwriter too. the drummer plays with his right hand on the synths and the left playing the drums. it works and sounds great.

the smashing pumpkins are playing 2 shows in japan on the 7th and 8th of august. With no other shows announced, it would make sense for their next show to be in san francisco 5 days afterwards.

My Morning Jacket is doing the mile high fest on the 15th. They have no summer shows before so essentially no tour conflicts.

Soundgarden is just a hunch

I actually highly doubt muse will be there because they'll be in korea on the 12th or somethign and then hungary on the 15th.

As Dorkfish pointed out, there will be a high crossover between mile high and outsidelands. Last year street scene and outsidelands had a high crossover so I bet that we'll see at least a third of the acts from both fests crossover.

this is the way I see the Billing (albeit i'd prefer dorkfish's lineup)

Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Kings of Leon, The Steve Miller Band, Weezer, My Morning Jacket, The Levon Helm band, Them Crooked Vultures, MGMT, Phoenix, Rodrigo y Gabriella, Grizzly Bear, Nas and Damian Marley, slightly stoopid, Deer Tick, Bassnectar, Jenny Lewis, Edward Sharpe, Keane, B.O.B, Z-trip, Flying Lotus, Major Lazer, Neon Indian

Somewhere between April 13th and April 19th.

well, it's a seated show, so you can guesstimate that it's about 85% sold since the only tickets left are in rows R through Z of the balcony.

Kings of Leon

I could be wrong. They just add a show on 8/12 in Los Angeles either supporting or playing with a Mali musician named Bassekou Kouyaté, so it could be that.

If I was doing OSL, using their mixture of local / crunchy / indie / poppy / older / etc acts, I would book it like this:

Friday:
Lands End - Stevie Wonder < Phoenix < Tom Waits < Metric < Edward Sharpe
Twin Peaks - Widespread Panic < Blues Traveler < Grizzly Bear < Black Mountain < Tinariwen
Presidio - Deer Tick < Shearwater < The Middle East < Adam H Stephens < Wye Oak
Sutro - Jamie Lidell < Bonnie "Prince" Billy < JUNIP < The Cave Singers < Toro Y Moi
Panhandle Solar - Bassnectar < Flying Lotus < Why? < Jel & Odd Nosdam < Tenderlions

Saturday:
Lands End - Beastie Boys < My Morning Jacket < Damian Marley & NAS < Erykah Badu < Blitzen Trapper
Twin Peaks - Chemical Brothers < Chromeo < Soulwax < Empire of the Sun < B.o.B.
Presidio - Lotus < Crown City Rockers < YACHT < Mumford & Sons < The Besnard Lakes
Sutro - The Black Keys < MUTEMATH < Wale < Owen Pallett < The Tallest Man On Earth
Panhandle Solar - Neon Indian < Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars < The Very Best < Tobacco < Loquat

Sunday:
Lands End - Tool < Kings of Leon < MGMT < A Tribe Called Quest < Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers
Twin Peaks - Wilco < Devo < Jimmy Cliff < Gogol Bordello < The Gossip
Presidio - Julieta Venegas < Sean Haye < Caribou < Shooter Jennings & Hierophant < Warpaint
Sutro - Joanna Newsom < She & Him < Yeasayer < The Dodos < Avi Buffalo
Panhandle Solar - The Coup < Z-Trip < Kid Sister < Lyrics Born < Themselves

If this is even close to the case, I will definitely be there all three days. But I don't remember there being any electronic outside of the Heineken dome.

There are pretty much none. I hope they change that since the festival was originally imagined as having electronic acts.

I didn't have a problem getting a good spot the whole weekend, so I made my way to Thom about 5 min before he started, and I was so far back I could barely see or hear the screen. Everyone around me was talking during the Eraser, drastically ruining the mood.

I was also worried about a spot for Gorillaz so I left and waited upfront for that. Looking back, I wouldn't have taken my time getting to the stage. Especially since nothing I wanted was on (I even waited for Numan...), I could have gotten a good spot.

+Faith no More on 14, driving on 15.

Hi Marco, welcome to the Bay Area. We used to have two awesome music festivals located in beautiful parts of the city that booked acts like Radiohead, Beck, Gotan Project, Goldfrapp, and some other stuff that is actually good. Now we get Kings of Leon and MSTRKRFT.

dorky...the fact that you included someone totally random like Wye Oak leads me to believe you know something. come clean.

i saw her/them open for Shearwater on Sunday night and they are amazing.

Finally. People are giving Wye Oak some credit. They're so fucking good and underappreciated. Can't wait for their new EP in June.

Dorkfish's lineup probably looks way better than it really will be. It looks good, though.

Ed Sharpe would be a good mix for this. They had quite a few acts last year that were also at the previous Coachella: I think Beach House, Vampire Weekend, Devo, Phoenix would work well in that suit if they're available. As long as they're getting older people, they should get Billy Bragg. THAT would be pretty cool...and Tom Waits could turn the shittiest lineup into something pretty rad if they hooked him in.

Is the absence of Shaun Ryder at Coachella because of the volcano or because of Shaun Ryder being Shaun Ryder? I wouldn't expect the festival that got Tenacious D as a replacement headliner to be able to get him out there if it's the latter.
