So... if you could listen to ONE and ONLY ONE album for the rest of your life what would it be and why?

... sorry if there is already a thread like this but I couldn't find any.

there probably is, but whatever. turn on the bright lights or antics without a doubt. interpol has the most plays on my itunes since 04 and they just never seem to get old

I know this isn't the thread for this. I've tried so so so so so hard to understand the supposed genius of The Band. But I just can't do it. I enjoy the first two albums well enough. Clearly these guys were talented. But yeah, I guess I just don't get it. I watched The Last Waltz when I flew over to Scotland in September, fully expecting it to be a work of staggering genius (I kept hearing that it was the greatest concert film ever, blahblahblah.) It was fucking boring. I only continued to watch because it helped me fall asleep.

So yeah, I just wish I understood these guys better.

Also, I couldn't tell if the post above mine was Blonde on Blonde or not. It was too subtle.

I can't really explain it, I just really really love their songs. But I've met a good number of people who feel the same way you do about it all.

Blonde on Blonde. It's a gatefold cover.Pet Sounds and In Rainbows would easily suffice as well...

so hard because my mood changes every day.
today im going with westing by musket and sextant by pavement. more of a compilation than a proper album, i know. but its still on one of those round shiny things, so it counts to me.
ive lost and rebought this cd at least five times.
i didnt say slanted and enchanted because i can totally listen to that album in my head by heart.

The idea of ONE album forever is madness inducing, so if I had to pick I'd go full blown into offing myself:

But the one I could probably stand the longest in a relatively sane state is:

Simply because they've stuck with me so long.

(I'm surprised no has selected In the Aeroplane over the Sea or Loveless yet..)

Holy shit. This is one of the albums I was thinking of. It really is a perfect album front to back. I put it as number 3 album of the decade for me. I don't think I have ever met anyone who appreciates this album like I do.

Solid choice. I don't know too many people who love this album as much as I do.

EDIT: Weird, Josh. Odd coincidence, I suppose.

If just one album for the next however many years, it would have to be this, so many diverse songs in one collection. It'd take the most amount of time to get old:

Why not take this one step further. Have we ever done Desert Island on this board? Five albums, movies, books, plus one random item to bring on a deserted island. Plus "who would you do?" (celebrity/musician edition and present company edition).

I love The Band, but I too find The Last Waltz kinda lame. I don't know how you don't see the brilliance of Music From Big Pink, though. I Shall Be Released is unbelievably moving, Lonesome Suzie is fucking heartbreaking, pretty much every song on the album is really great.

02-20-2010, 10:10 PM
i thought the last waltz is great. to me it's more about the collaboration of artists at their peak (neil young, van morrison, the band, etc.). and the first two albums have anyways been something i've enjoyed, along with the "i shall be released" song by bob dylan.
