How many threads about this bitch and her harp do we need?

In California is great but some of these songs are totally unnecessary. I hope they grow on me because right now I'm feeling like she needed an editor.

wmgaretjax
02-19-2010, 12:55 PM
yeah. there is a lot of excess on first listen. but some of this stuff is incredible. i need to sit down and listen more intently. it just feels like it goes on forever.

I think I might try approaching it one disc at a time spread out over the next few days. Maybe while walking or otherwise in transit. It seems like good taking-you-from-one-place-to-another music.

Getting serious Gershwin vibes from Soft as Chalk. Really like.

There's a good mediafire link I found that's only taken 10 minutes to download. In case anyone needs it.

I kinda want to save this for a roadtrip I'm doing next week. But I probably can't wait till then. Either way, I can't see myself just listening to this right now on the fly... have to wait...

Neutral Milk Hotel
02-19-2010, 01:48 PM
This would be a GREAT road trip album. Listening to it now that's what I really want to do the next time I listen to it.

Ok. I'll listen to it this weekend. Just once. Then I'll save it for my trip. Perfect.

Drag City tricked me by making me think all the songs would be like "Good Intentions Paving Co."

Dare I say it --- this is a bit sleep-inducing and (gasp) boring? Maybe it needs to grow on me... (Only through the first two discs, so let me know if it gets better...)

PotVsKtl
02-19-2010, 03:25 PM
Meandering and tuneless.

upon first listen, I could separate this into a great LP and two decent EPs easily.

Easy sounds quite a bit better than the live version, so far.

Fuck you guys who get to listen to these leaks right away.

I'm finishing the first disc right now. i think I'm going to listen to them as discs for the first go around, give each one some time to marinate before I go onto the next. Disc one is about 80% gold. The first half of Baby Birch and Provenance are both a little slow, but they both build to pretty awesome endings. Easy is amazing, Have One on Me is fantastic, '81 is already an old song in my mind, and Good Intentions Paving Company will have a hard time being bested.

Am I in the minority in loving just about every song on this album? Not every one of them is a blockbuster like Good Intentions Paving Co., but just about every song on this album is unique and lovely in my eyes.

I'm about done with the first song. I love her new voice. Brilliant song!

bmack86
02-20-2010, 07:51 PM
Well, I'm nearing in on the last song. I definitely didn't think it felt like an endurance test, but it's definitely a lot to take in. Her lyrics are much less knotty and complex than in the past, but the musical arrangements are frequently out of this world. It's gonna take some time, but it sounds like it's going to be worth the time spent.

Halfway through disc 2 till near the end of disc 3 was really forgettable for me.

This really should have been cut down.

I thought "Does Not Suffice" was one of the best tracks.

bmack86
02-21-2010, 11:04 AM
Yeah, that one is killer. I love what she did with Esme on here, and Soft of Chalk is one of her best songs. These are all from first listen, and I've had various songs from the album running through my head since last night.

So since I still haven't found a working download link, I'm fucking buying this shit at the record store tomorrow like I'd initially planned, for pretty much the first time I've done that on an album release date in years. SO EXCITED.

Discovered that they stocked the vinyl of this early at Amoeba last night, and promptly bought one. Anyone who likes to collect vinyl should get this, as the packaging is beautiful. It comes with a lyrics booklet as well. About to listen to record one now. Still in love with this album.

EDIT: As I'm sure you imagined this thing sounds great on vinyl too. $25 is pretty good for a triple LP too.

The first disc is an undeniable masterpiece in my mind. No Provenance is probably my least favorite track, but I'm not sure what else could fit between Good Intentions and Baby Birch. Still making my way slowly through the rest...

kreutz2112
02-23-2010, 01:19 PM
Ys is an undeniable masterpiece. The first disc is great, but on a totally different level than her masterpiece. The more I listen to this album the more I like it. On first listen I thought more than half the songs were weak. Now I'm probably on my 5th time all the way through and I enjoy the entire album. 81 and Easy are my favorites so far.

bmack86
02-23-2010, 02:28 PM
I'm on my 3rd trip through the album. The songs that fell by the wayside on the first two listens are starting to really pop. There are some absolutely astounding tracks, though, and they really have stood out each time. In California, for example. And Jackrabbits

hawkingvsreeve
02-23-2010, 02:42 PM
I really love the climax of In California. It reminds me of the tail end of Cosmia, which is my favorite part of Ys. In California has a Kate Bush thing going on (to me) during that heightened section.

bmack86
02-23-2010, 03:10 PM
I'd like to say that the second disc is the weakest, and I'm fairly certain that's the case, but damn, it's really a pretty hard comparison. Disc 3 starts out every bit as strong as Disc 1, and then having Esme and Autumn, and closing with Does Not Suffice.

Aaaaaaaand..."'81" already made me tear up. I'll be listening to this record exclusively tomorrow. Should make for an interesting workday, depending on if other songs make me cry, too. I'll be confusing coworkers left and right.

If I ever get to see her and she plays Does Not Suffice, I will be a wreck. That one is hard to listen to.

I'ma buying the vinyls on the way to a show tonight. Woohoo!

I can't wait to see the sets she does on this tour. I might need to travel up to the bay to see the set she does up there in addition to whatever LA show I see.

I'm sure this is blasphemy, but something about Joanna's voice and the production on this album reminds me of Carly Simon. Carly's moodier stuff.

Ux7HgO9QhAc

Whoa, just found this...guess I'm not as far off as I thought:

The Joanna Newsom who celebrated her 25th birthday this week wants to go to a club and indulge her love of roots reggae. She wants to go swimming. She wants to sing Carly Simon songs in a karaoke bar. And when the tour finishes, she wants to go home and make mushroom moussaka while listening to Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.

I have been swimming through the first two discs over the last two days and I'm fucking infatuated. Call it excitement but I don't care, this is her masterpiece to me already. It already has songs on it I like better than anything on Ys. And it's almost incomparable to Milk-Eyed. "In California" is one of, or maybe even the best Joanna song I've ever heard, and I haven't even laid the needle on disc three yet. Good stuff.

pancakespancakes
02-24-2010, 07:32 PM
It's amazing to me how easy it's all to digest and enjoy upon first few listens... that's been my favorite part. I put it on planning to hear a couple songs through, or a disc, and I just can't bring myself to turn the thing off.

My review should be coming out in our school paper tomorrow... I asked for extra space, they gave me 650, I ended up with around 1500. They'll probably run my edited down version and include a plug for the unabridged version on our website.

She's performing on Fallon next friday. Pretty certain this'll be her first tv performance. Someone tape it for me.

finally have given this a proper *couple* listens. this bitch sure is fucking demanding...but oh so worth it. i really like this album...which is very surprising to me. i've tried to like Ms. Newsom before, but the combination of her being a bit too mellow/folk for me and her "polarizing" vocal style has always stopped me short.

i'm sure this has already been mentioned here, but i wonder if my appreciation for "have one on me" (and her) has anything to do with her voice being different now after her nodules issue. or, do you guys call shenanigans on that?

ps - "Occident" is blissful.
