View Full Version : Greatest Regret

So I just discovered a group called Subtle. And I'm exactly 1(?) year short of my discovery. I knew they were at Coach while I was there, but I didn't know ENOUGH to go and check them out (plus they were hella early that day).

This seems to be happening every year I go. I hear about someone at Coach, and then afterwards I come to appreciate their music.

Who is your greatest regret in missing (Yes, I did see Daft Punk.) at Coach?

02-23-2007, 06:11 AM
that's exactly why this year, i'm listening to a lot of bands that i haven't had much interest in but have heard good things about. i.e. interpol, the decemberists, placebo, regina spektor, and the rapture.

Yeah, I'm doing the exact same thing, fasttrack. And I keep going, "how did I miss this?" when I discover stuff that really hooks me.

I missed Daft Punk at the Bang Music Festival last November. Was there for their opening track, Robot Rock, but in my jaded state of mind at that point wandered over to another stage and forgot to go back before their set was over. Yeeeeeaaahhh...I basically deserve to be shot for this. Stupid stupid stupid...excuse me while I go bang my head against a wall right now...

In this context maybe. I think I would regret doing physical or emotional harm to someone I love as opposed to regretting NOT doing physical or emotional harm to someone.

I don't think I entirely understand you. The quote is basically saying that it's better to learn from your regrets than not to learn at all. It's better to regret putting emotional harm on someone than not regretting it right? I mean how can you not regret something like that? If you put some emotional hurt on someone, and then later regretted it (like the quote says), then you've learned from the past and would have no intentions of doing it again, therefore making it better than not having regret it (because how can you not regret doing something like that?). At least that's the way I understand it, if that makes sense.

I mean think of it this way, is it better to regret something you have done (bungee jumping - it scared you and you never want to experience that again) or regret something you haven't done (bungee jumping - you wish you would of tried it because all your friends raved about it)? Is there even a scenario where you'd pick the latter?

I regret missing Radiohead at Glastonbury in 2003, for some reason i thought it would be more fun to pass out by the side of the dance tent (and miss chemical brothers at the same time)! Now i'll probablly never see them cos every time they tour it sells out in 2 minutes or something stupid!

Also missed Modest Mouse at reading, dident know who they were at the time!

Not going to Coachella 05 would probably be the biggest, missing Arcade Fire, M83, Four Tet, Rilo Kiley, MF Doom, Spoon, Blood Brothers, Dresden Dolls, M.I.A., Matmos, The Prodigy, Pinback and Wolf Eyes.

Plus in 2004 missing Basement Jaxx, The Crystal Method, Kraftwerk, Broken Social Scene and BRMC even though I was there

Axl Rose is an f'n mental patient. I don't even like seeing pictures of him, let alone seeing him live. My regret is ever having heard of him. Besides, what's he doing on a bill with Smashing Pumpkins? He should be touring with Corn for Texture (real band name -- don't know if they still exist, though).

theres plenty others im sure. i wish i was closer to the arcade fire set, but i wasnt that into them at the time, so sat on the grass really far back, and thought it was just ok.

i hear the basement jacks put on a really bad-ass set too.

to the guy that started this thread, I saw Subtle recently in Vancouver with Pigeon John, shit was off the hook...regrets a bitch. To tell you the truth I only have one concert regret and people will probably think this is terrrible, but when I was a kid I had floor tickets to see Eminem, Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach in Toronto at their heyday I got grounded and was unable to go. But I think if they all went on tour together now, there is no friggin way I would go see that crap...go figure.

i'm glad someone has the same regret that i do. i did not know of the arcade fire then. my brother told me z-trip was awesome and my friend was trying to get me to go to the arcade fire. i chose to watch z-trip, listened to funeral shortly after coachella after all of the hype of the arcade fire's set, and i will never get over missing them play. funeral is one of my favorite albums (neon bible being another) and every time i listen to it i get this sick feeling that i missed them at the outdoor theatre. i am so excited to finally see them this year but i'm sure it will be packed and not the same as it was.

i love the arcade fire though and cannot wait to finally see them.

I got into 2003 for free (don't ask how) and I was going to do the same for 2004. Upon getting there, my hookup totally failed. I went over hoping to buy tickets, only to realized it was sold out.

i also regret leaving chemical brothers in 05 to try to catch coldplay. i saw coldplay at a small venue in my hometown and they were incredible. i should have stayed and watched chemical brothers though. they were just absolutely sick!!

lesson learned: when making a decision on what band to see, always choose the band from overseas (i realize this doesn't apply directly here)/ the band that goes on tour less. Seems like common sense, I know.

A few years ago, just before his last big wave of popularity, Johnny Cash played at the little county fair in our community. We probably could have sat in the front row and gotten his autograph afterward. I had listened to his music since I was a kid and was well aware of his legendary status. I can't explain why I didn't bother to go to the show. I guess I assumed I'd have another chance. He didn't tour much after that. That's one decision I wish I could have back.

A couple days later I heard everyone on the internet talking about how great Daft Punk was so I got Discovery and I had one of those Oh shit!, that was them! moments and I cried while listening to Elliot Smith. Luckly I'm not strong enough to stab myself with a butter knife or I wouldn't be seeing them this summer.

I regret being broke in 2005 when I first heard about Coachella, and I regret never having heard of it until then. I regret having a pissy friend who thought going 2 days last year wasn't "worth" it because he didn't have "enough" money. And because he listens to nothing but hard rock music and not Daft Punk.

And Goddammit, do I regret being on the main stage having to endure a couple mediocre bands AND Sleater Kinney, when I could have seen Bloc Party (who I heard weren't so great either), Mogwai, and Digable Planets.

But I don't really regret much. I could have seen more, but this experience was more than good enough to make me come back this year. And after the near life-changing experience of one day at Coachella last year, 3 days is still unimaginable. My body might not be able to take it.

I have a final tomorrow and I have spent double the time on this board than studying. Argh!
Also, missing 2004. That line up was just WAY to good.

that's exactly why this year, i'm listening to a lot of bands that i haven't had much interest in but have heard good things about. i.e. interpol, the decemberists, placebo, regina spektor, and the rapture.

Yes, Id highly advise you to check out The Rapture. Youll definitely have a fun time watching their set.

I feel your pain. I just discovered Subtle and they're great. Last year I was at pitchfork festival in Chicago and I missed a handful of bands that I'm into now. It happens, I guess!

missing Daft Punk due to my friend getting all fucked up by some brownies that he ate from some chicks we was hanging out with, they weren't just bud brownies they also had vicodin, valume and other pills in it, it was a cocktail mix of pills the chick said only to take a lil bite but my drunk ass friend ate the whole thing! before he heard her. 20 min later he was stumbling and finally passed out I thought about leaving his ass but fuck I got him up and we went to the parking lot. Greatest regret cause he couldn't walk anymore once we got to the parking lot I ended up sleeping their next to a random car until he sobered up,incredibly it was my Bro who walked passed us in that sea of cars and woke us up only for him to tell me that he just saw one of the greatest performances ever!DAFT PUNK! I imediately got up kicked my friend in the head "lightly" and then in the shoulder "not so lightly" he awoke and I still give him shit till this day.

Like so many others, not going to any of the other Coachellas before 2004!
2004 was my first time and i've never looked back since. I'm been there every year since 04! Love it!
