View Full Version : Cool Shops/Shit to Do Around the Festival?

Hey, I'm coming to the festival for the first time this year and I was wondering if anyone knew of any cool shopping in the area or maybe some record stores or just like fun shit to do outside of the festival. I've heard its kind of in the middle of nowhere, but I was hoping to maybe find a little something. Thanks!

I have never met someone who wanted to shop or check out a record store while coachella is happening.. I mean the fest starts at noon and you can find a lot of new bands that are up and coming.. If you really think about it the show ends at midnight.. And the fun usually continues after.. So with sleeping time and show time I don't really see how someone would want to waste amazing coachella time with shopping or going to a record store when you have live music playing right there. UNLESS you are not attending all 3 days then I dunno I would be really bummed if that's the case.

my group generally goes into town in the morning, sometime between the 9 and 12 hour, to grab lunch at an air conditioned place, use real toilets, and stock up on supplies at grocery/drugstore. i don't think it's entirely unusual to leave the festival grounds for this kind of thing. but in terms of entertainment/"shit to do", indio is basically bum fucked egypt (sorry if you live there- you know it's true). it's the middle of nowhere, not much to do that i have seen in my 5 years attending. and besides, as it was pointed out above, there will be this incredible multifaceted entertainment bonanza happening called coachella. if that doesn't provide enough diversion for ya then i can't help.

my lebanese friend always insists we stop at the outlet mall (specifically for Banana Republic) on the way to Vegas. We are going to Vegas! I hate that shit dude and aim to put a stop to it.

Depends on how many miles you're willing to drive. You go west within 30 miles of the fest, and you're in a popular tourist/vacation area with tons of shopping and things to do.

Unless you're picking up basic supplies or want to use a clean (ie usually McDonalds or Subway) toilet, there isn't much reason to go into town. If you're worried that Coachella won't be enough to do for three days, don't. Getting drunk at 8:30 in the morning is an incredibly viable option, among other things. Just wait until you get to Palm Springs or LA if you want to loot some stores.

also be sure to take some time to stroll through the very modern and stylish Indio Fashion Mall, the pinnacle of high end designer goods.

There's a whole ton more to do in Egypt than there is in Indio. Just saying.. i worked in the entertainment industry in Cairo; that city has everything.

All the good shops and restaurants are in Palm Springs. But you'll find that everything is overpriced and quite cheesy. I suggest saving your money for the Record Store Day tent (check out the thread in the 'Music' section).

Barracks is an icon - and has been a part of the Leather life in the desert for many a year... The crowd can be very varied... from very old to very young... very large to very small... most of the guys are of the ... leather ... variety... but some are not. Some are just there becasue it's close to where they live or are staying.. Usually more leather than not, you'll find quite a few Leather Daddies and boys in the mix... Some look the part - straight out of a Colt video or a Tom of Finland print, and some don't. You'll find a unique mix of guys, for sure... Bartenders are generally very nice, and there's a lot of space when both rooms and patios are opened up for the crowds... Sundays ARE legendary there. Some weeknights may seem ... slow... The bar doesn't really get a crowd going until about 9 PM on most nights (Sunday being the exception) so you may be the only person there if you're there too early. Good music and many things to treat the eyes - and the lips... with great drink specials and some good eats (some days), it's usually a good time at Barracks

the one at Buffalo Bills? Its normally closed, I think. Never see no one ridin it.

Kinda dead out there, although George Jones did a show last year at one of the hotels. Wanted to attend but couldnt make it. Going to the UMA conference later this month so looking forward to gamblin and all the absurdness that goes with Vegas. And the owner who hired me to do the show ($200 per diem, travel expenses, room at Treasure Island...I cheap whore) promised to take us to his favorite strip club. I'm going to ask the strippers "do you love me?" during lap dances and try to stick my fingers in their mouth.

I live here, and I'm sorry, but if it weren't for Coachella, I'd seriously consider moving to bum fucked Egypt.

Oh, that's nothing! I hear from peeps here on this message board that the hot spot is Ralphs, down the street from the fest. And as far as attractions go, you'll find afew casinos. (Who the fuck wants to be in a closed casino VS the open green polo fields???)

Do they still allow anal sex and blowjobs on the patio after 9pm? (I haven't looked at Craigslist missed connections in awhile.)

The Coachella Valley is a beautiful spot with plenty to do that doesn't involve shopping, its the reason the venue was chosen. The few acres you stand on at the polo grounds don't even compare to the beauty of the open desert that surrounds your sorry mall rat asses.

Go for a hike, just don't get lost.

If you're staying in the area and have a car and a free day, there's some neat stuff within 30 minutes to an hour of the festival site.

- Joshua Tree national park is a bit of a drive (hour or so), but really beautiful and great hiking
- In Palm Springs you can take a hanging gondola tram up to the top of the mountains, views are great, some fun easy hiking trails up there
- The Living Desert out in Palm Desert is a decent enough "desert zoo" and botanical park that's good for 2-3 hours
- Palm Springs downtown has a crazy amount of art galleries; lots are really horrible and tacky, but there's some interesting ones interspersed in.
- You can go visit some of the crazies who live around the Salton Sea, like one guy who has made a mountain-sized artwork dedicated to God.

There's also this:

You can get a Date Milkshake. This place is bad ass and I always make a stop there during the Coachella weekend.

Yep, when in the valley you must eat or drink dates in one form or another. I always get a shake at Hadley in Cabazon by the dinosaurs and pig out on all their free samples.

I recommend eating acid when you get up in the morning and driving around Joshua Tree National Park.
