View Full Version : Damon ALbarn vs. Jack White

Coachella Bound

thought about putting this in the polls section but its completely relavent to this year.... after this years festival, every single project for these two will have played Coachella. So my question to you all is:

1. Who do you prefer Jack or Damon, and which project (Gorillaz/Dead Weather) are u most looking forward to this year?

*edited due to my lack of fact checking.

Albarn's Mali Music project has not made an appearance and Blur definitely have played Coachella

That's a really tough question. Both are wonderful in their own right. But I think I'm gonna go with Damon, because of his ability to collaborate with so many different artists. I see Jack working with only the rocker types. Diversity is good, especially if you can pull it off like Mr. Albarn.

And I'm more excited for Gorillaz.

Dead Weather really bring nothing that new to the table if you ask me. No one will be raving about The Dead Weather months after Coachella the way they will about Gorillaz

YOU UNTHINKABLE PIECE OF SHIT.

i thought Blur had played but nothing seemed to come up when i was looking for it, guess i should have taken the time to get the facts straight but i was a lil stoney balogna at the time and got lazy.

none the less, i see it appears to be Damon all the way, though had it been say a White Stripes vs. TGTBANTQ i can see this going the other way. I consider Jack and Damon two of the biggest and best, especially for my generation. But im going to have to agree that Damon just has the ability to take it to a whole new level when it comes to live stage performances and collaberations. Not to discredit anything Jack's done, unless theres a conflict of catastrophic proportions ill be seeing both sets this year.

Great. Absolutely no source whatsoever for anything you said. Doesn't count for what, anyway? Jack White has worked with two non-rock artists that I know of, that was my point.

Since Alicia Keys is rumored to show up with Jay-Z, how about performing with Jack White on Saturday? I bet that's a collab no one's thought of.

That's why I said "I'll bet", silly.

I can't confirm White because to his credit, he's tended to go the way if the indie label (save Warner and V2). Keys on the other hand has been on Columbia/Arista/J records all of which are subsidiaries of Sony Music Entertainment which is one of the branches of the Sony empire. Sony also happens to be a partial owner of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), the film company which produced Quantum of Solstice, the film Keys and White collaborated on.

if Jack White wasn't in so many awful bands, i'd choose him because he's clearly the better guitarist, and a pretty solid drummer (drumming and singing can be difficult, despite the simple music). but, Damon Albarn has been a part of two projects that i absolutely adore, The Gorillaz and Blur, so he wins, hands down. See?

I still don't see what that has to do with my point or the thread overall. Everyone has a reason to collaborate, they collaborated to write a song for the opening credits of a 007 film, which is a great opportunity to collaborate. Are you suggesting that Jack White's a sellout and never would've collaborated with a soul singer had he not been forced to?

My point is simply his working with Keys in that context cheapens the artistic nobility of the collaboration. It happened at the bidding of some corporate fat cat. Just putting it in perspective. The more you know etc. etc.

Daniel Craig is awful. Bond films have deteriorated into every other crummy action flick with more emphasis on blowing stuff up than anything else. I miss the old bond who used his suave guile to get the job done. Not just shoot through everything.

Well I did pick up on this much. It felt like Gorillaz-style lazy, mellow vocals without the high-energy musical contrast. I missed them at Coachella too, which would've been a good chance for me to get into them. Well I have a long drive in the morning, I'll have to bring it along.

Seeing Albarn perform "Sunset Coming On" at Lincoln Center was easily one of the high points of 2008 for me.

Ultimately what it boils down to is that Albarn's music has always meant much more to me than White's. The Raconteurs were fun, but kind of forgettable (great Coachella set, though), and the Dead Weather does absolutely nothing for me. I've got a few White Stripes albums on my iPod, but I sometimes think I respect them more than I actually like them.

Conversely, I've been a Blur fan since hearing "There's No Other Way" in college, and pretty much everything Albarn's been involved with since then has been right up my alley.

Better drummer? Jack

Better actor? Jack

Better side projects? Damon (Gorillaz >>> Raconteurs or The Dead Weather)

Aw, I feel like we could be friends in real life

Anyway, playing the same blues lick over and over again with a whammy pedal doesn't make you unique, it makes you sound like a fuckin' fourteen year old. Forgive me if I think playing watered down Zeppelin licks so highly distorted and modded that no one can make out how low grade the sounds is, is lame. There are many fantastic modern blues guitarists that don't play like Dragonforce that are quite skilled, and are quite better than Jack White. Dan Auerbach for example is doin' it right, and he hardly ever shreds at all.

In the end, I would rather you think I'm a fucking snob than buy into the bullshit praise around his half assed, diet blues. Cheers!

First off; anyone stating Blur never played Coachella should reference exhibit A... 2003 poster http://www.merch.com/coachella/COACHELLA-POSTER-2003/productinfo/COA.PS.003/

As to the who's better question; they are on different levels completely. Apples and oranges if you ask me. I highly suggest checking out The Dead Weather though. Saw them at Street Scene in San Diego before the album came out and they are unbelievable live. Better live than recorded. Alison Mosshart (VV) is a front woman like no other. If you missed The Kills last year; don't miss this. Pure rock and roll...gritty and beautiful wrapped up in one!

I'll agree that Dan Auerbach is very good guitarist. I saw The Black Keys play in a little venue, it was one of the best shows I've seen. The whole place was groovin'. But I still have to disagree with you, Jack White licks don't sound watered down, just basic. Stripped down and naked. No fancy producing, just raw blues.
