You know, like, rainy day music

It seems like every year there's some kind of "trip hop" music, whether Thievery or Portishead or DJ Shadow...but this year I don't see anything like that. Any recommendations someone could provide of people that are on the line-up this year would be great

Flying Lotus?

yeah he has a few pretty good trip hop beats. i do agree though that there should be a big trip hop artist this year and i wouldn't be surprised if massive attack gets added since they are coming out with a new album. i would be so excited if they did get added

Flying Lotus has his own kinda sound going on, it's like an 8bit influenced dynamic ?-hop groove with a hint of Dub?... It's unique at least.

you have no idea what trip hop is, because if you really did you'd know it's a retarded and fake genre name. It was made up by the british to try to classify their jazzier instrumental hip hop or downtempo, but it was mostly created just to dissociate themselves from american music.

If you absolutely had to apply a genre name to flylo then the closest thing might be abstract hip hop, but it's still weak.

If it has major hip-hop influences (drum beats) yet extremely trippy, I don't see why trip-hop wouldn't work as a categorization.

because trip hop is a bogus genre. It is bogus because it was coined to describe something it is not rather than something that it is. The british had been mixing jazz and blues for a long time, and here they were coopting and mixing in hip hop, yet another american genre, and they wanted their own name for it so they could pretend they invented it. Even the ninja tune pioneers of the sound have dissociated themselves from the term. It's embarrassing.

And "trippy" is not a necessary attribute the "trip hop" sound. The term was created by the british in an attempt to be clever, and was meant to be a hip hop version of "acid jazz", which is in itself sort of another joke genre name, although not as egregious as "trip hop". and btw that sound is the furthest thing from "trippy" to folks who are really into it.

and btw even if I did accept "trip hop" as a valid genre. I still wouldn't put flylo in that category. Flylo sort of fits into the same abstract hip hopish/IDMish, non-descript type of sound like acts like daedalus or dabrye at one end, maybe P73 at the other. It's tough to pin down but it's not "trip hop"

If trip hop existed I'd say that maybe of the closest things at coachella woudl be Ceu (maybe a samba-ish version of it).
