Oh sorry Salah. I never saw that months ago. No, I never had the pre-sale password.

Last night was the first show and here's the fucking KICKASS setlist!

One Big Holiday
Gideon
The Way That He Sings
Off The Record
It Beats For You
Mahgeetah
Lay Low
Losin Yo Head
I'm Amazed
Golden
Friends Again
Touch Pt. 1
Thank You
Dondante
Smoking From Shootin
End of Run Thru
Anytime
Touch Pt. 2

Encore:
Wordless Chorus
Evil Urges
Highly Suspicious
Move On Up
Mother In Law
Carnival Time

Since they're playing with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, I doubt this setlist will change much if at all during this tour. That's a very good thing because this set is damn near perfect. Less than 2 weeks til my show, can't wait!

TallGuyCM
04-21-2010, 08:27 AM
Opening with "One Big Holiday"??? :nono

And what does "End of Run Thru" mean, they didn't play the entire song?

liquidsnake28
04-21-2010, 08:35 AM
What's wrong with One Big Holiday as an opener? That's a perfect opening song.

TallGuyCM
04-21-2010, 08:37 AM
What's wrong with One Big Holiday as an opener? That's a perfect opening song.

It is, but it's so much better as either a closer or at least a main set closer. And what's with the "End of Run Thru"?

liquidsnake28
04-21-2010, 08:42 AM
The end of the Run Thru means the fucking end of Run Thru, I don't know what else to tell you there.

They closed with One Big Holiday last tour. Why do you want them to be predictable and boring? You can't seriously complain about this setlist and if you think you can, please write your own setlist that you think would be better.

TallGuyCM
04-21-2010, 08:49 AM
Easy, guy. I'm not attacking you or the setlist, so stop being so defensive. Although "Highly Suspicious" needs to be retired and replaced by "Aluminum Park", now we're talking.

Although "Highly Suspicious" needs to be retired and replaced by "Aluminum Park", now we're talking.

I completely agree with that.

It just seemed like you weren't satisfied with the setlist considering this

Opening with "One Big Holiday"??? :nono

And what does "End of Run Thru" mean, they didn't play the entire song?

was your first response to it.

I didn't hear how long this show was but it looks like it was pretty long. I don't think they have any openers this tour.

TallGuyCM
04-21-2010, 09:25 AM
When I saw them in L.A. in '08, they played for 2.5 hours, no opener.

TallGuyCM

Nice, yeah that Greek show was easily tied with the best shows I saw all year that year (Radiohead Bowl shows, NIN Lights in the Sky). It was one of those shows where I realized that from then on I would never miss the band when they came through town again.

TommyboyUNM
04-21-2010, 12:46 PM
"Highly Suspicious" sucks incredible amounts of shit on record, but I highly enjoy it in concert. It's easy for me to tune out a lot of the backup vocals when I'm hearing it live. I just focus on that guitar jamming out. It will be great hearing it again.

Peanut butter pudding surprise.

TallGuyCM
04-21-2010, 12:50 PM
I actually didn't mind it live when they played it, I just think it's one of those songs that was appropriate to play on the Evil Urges tour, but now that that's over so should the song be.

it was funny to be at Pemberton and see a 45min set from them....when just a few weeks earlier at Bonnaroo they played for nearly 4h.....I wonder how they felt about only getting such a short time in the middle of nowhere...also saw these guys open for Foo Fighters and Pete Yorn in 03, they were really great then i remember.... Id like to see a recent set.....wheres the LA gig?

No surprise, they killed it last night. They're one of the most consistently awesome live bands for sure. We were able to get a great spot about 15 feet from the stage, dead center. It was raining pretty hard all day before the show but once the show started it slowed down to a drizzle which was disappointing considering we came prepared for an epic MMJ rainstorm. I didn't even realize it was the last show of this tour until the end when Jim (I refuse to call him by his terrible new name) mentioned it.

The setlist looked much better on paper than how it actually played out. The pacing was a little off. They started off with a few energetic singles then there were many slower songs stringed together in the whole middle portion of the set. I loved the long mellow sequence but most of the audience was losing interest. However the end of the set and encore were perfect. The lightshow seemed to be toned down a bit from their last tour but I was fine with that.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band opening was such a good idea. Most of these guys have been playing music longer than the MMJ members have been alive. Jim came out and sang a few songs with them. Then for the last three songs of MMJ's encore, the jazz band came back out and played some covers with them. Hopefully they keep them as their opener when they announce their west coast tour. Awesome collaboration.

It's the best place to start I think.

It's also one of the best live albums ever made.

You really need to get some good bootlegs of theirs.

I recommend both 12/30/06 and 12/31/06 (Fillmore in SF) or Bonnaroo '08.

Nope, never been. As far as I know, they've just recently started booking "contemporary" acts like this. It's usually where the Roc philharmonic plays, and then a bunch of oldies acts. But flaming lips/black keys is there in july, so this may be the start of some real cool stuff.

I was able to get two tickets in section BB Row 2, for 10 bucks last time, like 2 weeks before the show. There was a Ticketmaster deal going on during that time. I wasn't even half about, it was about 1/3 full. I'm expecting the same, I'll probably wait until late July to buy tickets.

Yeah that song is great! Screw people who dont like it!

"Into The Woods" is probably my least favorite MMJ song. Kills the middle of Z

Aaron said it right.

If it was on one of their many EPs, it might not be bad as an individual song.

But just look at the sequencing of the album, and more importantly what could have been.

It starts out mellow and gradually builds: Wordless>It Beats>Gideon.

Gideon ends rather triumphantly, and goes right into What a Wonderful Man, and then Off the Record. A pace has been established.

And if you were to remove Into the Woods, you'd have Off the Record>Anytime>Lay Low in succession to fill out the middle of the album. And the record would be firing on all cylinders. A nearly flawless string of songs.

And then it would come down at the end with Knot Comes Loose and the epic Dondante, which I would argue is one of the better closing songs from last decade.

.........But, scratch all that. Because after all, Into the Woods IS right smack in the middle of the album. And there's nothing we can do about it.

How do most people feel about the Evil Urges album relative to the rest of their work?

If they condensed the album from the first few songs into the last few songs, it would have been up there among their best. But the middle part ruins it.

And yes, "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Pt. 2" is one of my favorite songs they do, and is other-worldly live.

great show indeed! yea, more like 2.5 hours, not 3. man it all sounded amazing. i thought the setlist could have been better...no dancefloors, or anytime, or what a wonderful man, but hey, its mmj, pretty much everything they play is great.

lay low was fuckin fantastic. and they happened to go into highly suspicious right after i got hiiiiiigh, so that was nice timing. i was one person back from the railing all show, and only had these 2 short girls in front me, so had a perfect view all night, right in front of jim. i got some great pics and vids ill post when i have time, probably not till next week though. god damn i wish i could drive up to the greek tonight, but too busy this week.

The show tonight was fantastic. I have a feeling they might have decided to rest up for Outside Lands this weekend though, our show tonight was only 1hr 59mins to be exact.

And a few glaring omissions from the setlist - no Lay Low or Off the Record.

But I mean, come on. With bands these days seemingly playing shorter and shorter sets, you can't argue with a band playing a solid 2 hour rock show. Two thumbs up.

Oh, and I had yet another positive experience with upgrading my tickets in the parking lot from the same shady hispanic guy who's always there. MuseRadio and I had section A, row N tickets to the far left, and gave the guy our tickets plus $20 each for section A row H tickets, just off center on Jim's side. :thu

Right when we sat down I suddenly remembered how chatty the crowd was last time I saw MMJ in '08, and tonight's crowd, around us anyway, was noticeably less talkative. There was one guy two seats to my right that sang some of the songs at the top of his lungs though, that was annoying.

Great pics indeed, especially the one with just Carl. He's a very underrated part of that band.

Yeah, I mentioned that to MuseRadio on Thursday.

What are you talking about? That must have been on the Z tour, because their reverb-drenched beginnings could hardly be described as hell raising.

I'm a little bummed that Phone Went West doesn't seem to be a set staple on this tour. Oh well.

Interview with Carl in Filter Mag:

As My Morning Jacket embarks on a summer tour, guitarist Carl Broemel has a surprise in store for fans. Along with friends, MMJ keyboardist Bo Koster and Broemel's father (a classically trained musician in his own right), Broemel is releasing a solo album, All Birds Say, on August 31 via ATO Records. But have no fear MMJ fans, Broemel has no intention of leaving the band: this album is a collection of work done during his time living in Nashville while on various breaks. Recently, Broemel took time to chat with FILTER about how the album came together, how he writes his songs and about the possibility of MMJ incorporating his solo material into its sets. [And stay tuned for FILTER's interview with MMJ drummer Patrick Hallahan tomorrow.]

When did you decide to write material for you own album?

Carl Broemel: I’ve always written songs and I’ve always sort of been working on stuff, no matter what other kind of musical stuff I was doing, like laying it down on a laptop. When I moved to Nashville, I had a couple of people that helped me get some legitimate recordings and it’s come together over the past four years. I finally got most of 'em done and friends said, "You should put this out!" so I said, "Alright, I’d love that" and that’s how it came together.

It took about four years to collect all the material. Was the process more a "work in progress" way of working or did you think that certain songs would make the cut at some point while others wouldn’t?

I kinda would just do them as I wrote them. “Carried Away” was the first one that we recorded. Then six months later we went in and did another song. I have a few friends here in Nashville and we were jamming in my friend's studio, which is actually in his garage. We’d go there, jam and record a song. It wasn’t like we were officially making an album; we were just kind of recording songs. I had like five or six songs I thought were cool and then I found out my wife was pregnant and it was sort of like, "Well, I might as well finish the whole record now [May 2009] before he's born." So I booked time and finished the second half of the record. And now it’s done!

The lyrics seem very personal and introspective. What were some of the themes of the album?

I don’t know, to be honest. I don’t know what “Carried Away” is about necessarily; it’s a more general song [laughs]. But I think it’s pretty easy to understand. On “Retired,” I was sort of thinking about my parents and their lives and what that’s like. They’re divorced and have been for a long time and have lived separate lives. So it’s about being retired from the two perspectives. I write a lot of songs at night when everyone’s gone to bed.

Sometimes the best creative energy comes when there’s nobody else around. Is that what it's like for you?

That sounds about right. It just took so long and there were never any deadlines for any of the music so I never felt I had to put anything there that I didn’t want. I had so much time to think through because I’ll write five or six things and sometimes there won’t be a solid one. I think I had to spend this time filtering out what I considered to be my best material. Hopefully it won’t take me that long to do another one.

What were the other differences between making this album and a My Morning Jacket album?

We have a schedule for a MMJ record. I didn’t really think about the process so much on my record and I didn’t think of it as making a record until I got two-thirds of the way through it and I was like, "Fuck it, I’m gonna finish this." When the band is going in to record, the mentality is, "We are going to do this right now." The MMJ process is relaxed, since we take control of the schedule and know what to do.

Do you plan on having the band play any of your solo material at the upcoming shows?

We might do “Carried Away,” depending on how we feel. We’re all trying to support each other and encourage everyone to do what we do separately as well, and not feel like a collective in a way. We play Monsters of Folk songs and when Jim puts out a solo record, I’d love to play it live.
