View Full Version : Any suggestions on school/coachella situation

I was told yesterday that I will have about 15 hours of reading/homework the weekend of Coachella. The trip from Vegas is about 4 hours each way. I could study, and do homework in the campgrounds and come in a little late each day. Or just play it safe and not go? I'm thinking I should not go, but other students say I'll be fine. It kills me not to go, though. Any suggestions from anyone that has tried to study in the campgrounds would be greatly appreciated. I think if I get started early each day (i.e. before people start partying) I might be ok. Thanks.

Ask for the work in advance. Its what I always do. No way in hell are you going to actually get some work done at Coachella.

Have sex with your teacher. That doesn't seem like it could fail.

Seriously though. Find out what you need to read and start early. You'll be fine!

Thanks for the helpful responses. I'm feeling good about going after reading them. I really want to see Pavement and Faith No More.

school is meaningless. put it out of your mind!!! coachella used to be the week before my finals, so i always ended up getting fucked over. this year my plan is to not care.

i doubt that skipping out on wine tasting will really effect my grade though...

it is possible to do homework during coachella time, but the only way is in a hotel room or at a house on thursday. doing homework at the campgrounds? impossible.

i still have to talk to my professors about this. getting the time off of work was an interesting enough challenge, i'm hoping i don't run into any problems with school.

ya you wont get any done in the campgrounds. I always bring my backpack but never use it. I always just get started with my work early in the week and just spend all week getting ahead so i have everthing i need done for class done before thursday. It also helps that I am going to try to get only Tues Thurs classes for my spring quarter. That would really make things easier.

My dead grandmother is going to die again around that time. In Kansas, where she never lived.

I'm always ahead in my classes, but when Coachella comes around, I ask if there are any tests/quizzes that are scheduled during those dates and then ask to take them ahead of time. Lucky for me, my web design professor knows about and has been to Coachella, and likes that I go because I always come back with awesome pictures that I put into my websites.

Learn to speed read. Or you can always come sit at my camp spot each morning and I will yell at you to keep studying until you finish your assignments.

Take the hit to your grades. Grad school is probably not in your future anyways.

My first year I brought some schoolwork to the campgrounds with me 'cause I had midterms all the next week but studying there is impossible. If you can't handle the weekend off from assignments and studying and you can't accept the possibility of a lower grade, don't go.

I'm not sure why Coachella equates with a lifetime of service in fast food. One weekend should not really make or break your grades.

not to mention taking one weekend off isnt gonna even ruin your grade for the semester/quarter especially if you do the work earlier in the week

A non-existent family member, preferably. You're just asking for it otherwise.

not only do I think it's possible to get your homework done in the campgound (if you REALLY want to), but I'd bet five bucks that if you walked around and offered to trade someone a couple beers or a joint for some help, you'd get your shit done faster. coachella is like a psychedelic drug trip- it's whatever you make it. if your coachella is gonna be meeting some genius in whatever discipline you're in in the campground and him helping you with your homework and you two becoming BFFs, then by gum I'll bet it's gonna happen. it's just that magical of a place.

so long story short- just fuckin' come already. come hell or high water you won't regret it.

School is the last thing that should keep you from going to coachella. That is why it's on Friday-Saturday-Sunday.

I talked to students that are several semesters ahead of me, and some say to go, some say don't. I'm just going to bust ass that week and try to get everything taken care of. This is my 4th Coachella and I couldn't imagine trying to read about Microbiology in the campgrounds with the impromptu water cooler jug drum circles going on like after the Cure set last year. I watched security run after the people with the jugs, then snatch them out of their hands.

i've said this before in another thread, but school made me miss coachella in '04 and '06. those remain the 2 dumbest decisions of my life. my grades would have been just fine had i gone. if you don't go to coachella, let the reasons be finiancial or dissatisfaction with the lineup, not school.

memories last forever and you will remember coachella, not studying for a thesis.

I took the CPA exam after Coachella and passed with flying colors.

Stop being a sissy and just pull the trigger and go. Unless you will be a worry-wort the entire time, in which case skip it and regret it for the rest of your life.

I've been to every Coachella, and was in school for 7 of them (Jr. College, College, Post College Certificate Program)......the worst year was my Senior Thesis year for college - graduation was the following week.

I stayed in the condo for the early half of every morning - and drove into the grounds around 3:00pm. I didn't really miss any of the acts I was dying to see - so it worked out.

The other years I had intentions of working, but if I got any work done, it was minimal.

Try to get as much work as you can done before the weekend - enjoy the weekend, and if you don't finish everything, don't worry about it. Like others are saying, one weekend shouldn't make or break your entire semester.

Come to the festival free of work and enjoy it for what it's worth. Think of it this way...10 years from now, are you going to remember the 15 hours of reading that you did...or will you remember Coachella?!

I would never take back the fact that I've gone every year / every day of Coachella.

Go.

go to coachella and do not study. just get a bad grade. it will not be the end of the world. I once went to Puerto Rico the weekend before a big exam, obviously I did not spend my time there studying. I came back, failed the exam. had a great time though, still got my degree, all is well.

1) read ahead
2) finish papers/projects now
3) if you plan to drink/do whatever at coachella make sure you're body is ready for it; if not you're toast the next week
4) stfu and stop bitching i did this 4 years in a row, its easy.

Don't expect to get anything done during coachella weekend. I'm from Vegas too, had the same mindset last year, and I didn't get shit done. Best to just talk to your professors now, let them know about it, and they'll likely work something out with you.

They'll be much more willing to help if you come to them now rather than bullshitting some excuse at the last minute.

I'd just go to your professor's office hours and ask if you can get the readings or assignments a few days ahead of time. Don't ask for an extension; ask to start early (assuming that would "work" in the style of class that you have the issue with). Then just work as hard as you possibly can pre-Coachella. That way, Coachella becomes like a double-vacation. Worst case scenario, just own up to what you're doing, and ask for the stuff one-day early and a one-day extension. If the prof won't budge, then just do what you can and take the consequences. Usually, if you come to us well in advance, and are honest, we're willing to work with you and be flexible as long as it doesn't involve alot of extra work for us.

Don't make up dead relatives. You're all much, much worse liars than you think you are. We see through that sort of shit instantaneously, we just go along with it rather than call people out who pull stuff like that because it's not worth our time to call their bluff. It definitely puts you on a mental shitlist, however, that can actually follow you from class to class as faculty do talk to each other.

Go!! You won't regret it... My first Coachella was 2 years ago. All semester last year I knew I wouldn't be able to go to Coachella because of finals. However 2 days leading up to Coachella my fried couldn't get into the states meaning an extra ticket was available ( printed off online). I was at school, just finished a final and writing my last essay in Philosophy.. When Prince came on my online radio. It wasn't just a regular song, it was Prince live from Coachella 08, singing his cover of "Creep". When I heard this I took it as a sign... I said fuck it I have to go! I talked to my professors and they were so rad and let me write my finals after the festival. During the festival I met some wicked peeps that had answers for me that I was questioning in life. It was almost like I was meant to be there. Needless to say I got back and got A's on my finals....... I fuckin love Coachella.

I brought my work last year, thinking I would get it done. Hahaha no. I'm with the people who say to get it done early/in advance, if possible.

That extra push and finishing early feels so awesome when you're done, especially since you've been working harder than you thought you could and knowing the reward is the greatest weekend of your life. And you don't want to dread Monday so much over the weekend.

YOU CAN DO IT (but not at Coachella). good luck

Just get super baked to the point where your eyes are bleeding red and closing, and put an eye drop in ONE eye and tell them that you have pink eye, works like a charm! I have done this 20 + times to get out of work and class and it never fails. No one wants pink eye.

I definitely have a bunch of work to do too but fuck it, you only live once. Just get as much done before and on the way as you can and if you feel up to it on the way back but once you get there, let that shit go!

You can re-take the class but you cannot re-take the party!

Chances are your not going to get any work done at the festival. That means you are going to have to maximize your efficiency on the car-ride there and back. My suggestion for ensuring that you make the most of your time is...... BY GETTING SOME ADEROL(dont know how u spell it) OR RITALIN! Seriously, I am not one that believes in perscription pills, but when you gotta put in work you gotta put in work, and that shit can help get you out of some sticky situations.

Also, if you insist on doing work in the camp-sight, they may be the only things that stop you from distraction.
