View Full Version : My "Who to See" at Coachella 2010 Grid.

I know this flies in the face and spirit of rock n roll and all, but here's my highly unscientific scoring system, all subject to change.

Lots of tie scores... No more than the top 8 each day based on how many acts one is likely to actually see.

Yes, I am nerd with lots of pent up Coachella energy.

Are you doing this in excel? I'll do one too if you upload it somewhere so I don't have to make my own grid.

Also, please explain how you are defining your criteria.

Nah I just quickly laid it out in indesign.

Let's see criteria... same thing I've used in years past, my results are pretty in line with my gut - of course all that changes once the set times get released.

all the scoring is based on 1-10, best best possible out of 50. (my best scores ever: Kraftwerk in 2004 - 47, Underworld in 2004 47, Daft Punk in 2006 - 48, Gogol Bordello in 2007 - 47, Basement Jaxx 2004 - 47, Prince 2008 - 47)

1. Favorite (how does the artist rank as a personal favorite) all time, not just recent recordings.

2. How many times have you seen them live? Subtract 1 point for each concert prior to Coachella.

3. The Live show - what is their live show like, and if you haven't seen them, what's the buzz or reputation of their live show?

4. Curiosity - How curious are you about the artist or their music

5. X Factor - a catch all catagory, Is this a reunion gig (Pavement), are there any expected guests (De La Soul with the Gorillaz for example) How much touring will the artist in question be doing, how rare is the performance to you and your city. Do they have a new record coming out near or soon after Coachella?

I want to do this

Lots of people are going to end up wanting to do this. A standardized version that everyone could use would be very useful.

I sure my weak attempt can be improved upon. That took me 30 minutes. I'm not really an Excel guy, so if anyone wants to take this and run with it... go for it, could be fun.

I may have some time to do it tomorrow. If someone doesn't jump on it before then, I'll see if I can put something together.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that breaks out the spreadsheets for coachella. Nerds unite!

I would totally do this, except when Ive done a light one in my head, I get too concerned with the conflicts, and I get really depressed.

jesus you've seen muse six times? this does look like a lot of fun though.

My girlfriend and I made a rankings list, a la the AP Top 25 for each day. We posted it on a posterboard, and are listening to selected artists weekly. As of now, we have about 23 artists ranked each day, and the visual board allows us to place acts into tiers and gauge where certain acts are moving for us. I like this thread...

I'm working on one right now, but am thinking about leaving out the live show category and just including it as part of the x factor because I've hardly seen any of these acts live, and there are too many that nobody seems to have seen. How many people here have actually seen Gorillaz or Charlotte Gainsbourg or DJ Lance Rock?

Actually, nevermind. I'll just put 5 if I don't have a good idea what to expect from a live show.

I've seen DJ Lance Rock twice actually, lol.

And it was just as awesome as you'd imagine.

I'm more shocked that there's a person who's seen Jay-Z twice, PiL three times, Echo and the Bunnymen five times, and Muse six times. Are you a roadie?

Sometimes it's wierd the things we've seen a lot. For instances, I've seen the Pigface/NIN song "Suck" more times live than any other song in the world. And it ain't close.

No I am just old. Ask anybody.

I also go to an ungodly amount of shows. Muse has played Ohio a ton, going waaaay back when they played tiny clubs or opened for the Foo Fighters/Chili Peppers when they didn't have a US record deal (Second album), PIL I've seen open up for people all 3 times,, including a stent with INXS on the Kick tour and on the 120 Minutes tour where New Order Headlined and The Sugarcubes also were featured. Jay Z, I saw at APW and here in C Bus (the latter was free), Echo is one of my favorite bands, I saw the Bedbugs tour twice, and ever since then I've caught them when I could.

Here are some of my ticket stubs to illustrate...

No, he's never seen them before. Which is why he gives it a "10" in that category. (Minus one point for each time he HAS seen it).

This is fucking awesome...I would love to do this myself, if anyone gets a chance to upload a spreadsheet or whatever.

Damn. Couldn't get the add image to work. Have to go with the thumbnail.

I would have thought the Specials would have made it. I guess I'm just more curious about the techno bands as people who I otherwise respect rave about them and I just can't get into it.

Why did you put a 4 for Camera Obscura's live show? Do they suck?

I love their music but I'm anticipating their live show won't be amazing. I've never seen them live, but I have seen other bands in the twee-pop genre and they are usually kind of boring on stage.

They sound really good but yes, are kinda (errr... REALLY ... boring) live. Maybe they just had an off night cuz it was the very last day of their US tour, but me and my friends plan to be at their set for afternoon naptime...
