Hey music lounge cool kids who like vinyl:

This semester, since it's my last time I'll have a radio show, I decided to go balls out and do an all-vinyl, full album side show called...

HOTT/WAX with DJ KittKat!

Show is Sundays 6-8pm
http://kscr.org
Click to stream on the pop out player, top right of the home page

Today, I'll pull from my first press collection and will spin:

Eno's "Another Green World"
Bowie's "Hunky Dory"
Sonic Youth's "EVOL"
Gary Numan's "The Pleasure Principle"
Bratmobile's "The Real Janelle EP"

I don't see what the point of announcing that you are playing vinyl is. Does anyone really care what format the music is being delivered to them through radio?

I mean just the fact that you are advertising that you are playing from your "first press" collection just comes off as you congratulating yourself for having them. I dont think people really care if you are playing the original masters or mp3s so long as it generally sounds the same. But what do I know.

I'll listen because of the extra letters/punctuation in the show's title. It's edgy.

why would a regular radio dj announce their playlist in advance? now any of us could just go download those records ourselves (dowload vinyl rips, too). the point of a dj, radio or club, is to choose the music and present it in an interesting and engaging fashion.

Tomorrow night I'm planning this special event:

Dr. Rob (Ph.D.) Readz His Dizzertation.

That's right, kiddies. Anyone who's hip to education policy won't want to miss this once in a lifetime event. In a balls to the wall display of pedagogical hubris, Dr. Rob (Ph.D.) will be sharing excerpts from his envelope-pushing, boundary-testing dissertation. As a special added bonus, this document is a first edition press, written on an ancient papyrus scroll and imprinted with bona fide cuneiform script. You won't want to miss what is sure to be pulse-pounding entertainment for the whole family!

Hi, I'm DJ Kitt Katt here to do a little promo for tonight's episode of Lost. Well tonight you'll find out that the island is a big snowglobe.

as it generally sounds the same.

Yes. It'll sound like shit through a web stream.

Will it actually sound any different on vinyl after being broadcast over the air (static) or online (lossy, digital, etc)?

This depends on several factors. The equipment being used... The mastering on the record...

The reality is though, once it's crunched through web compression, you are listening to an awful audio stream anyways.

hawkingvsreeve
01-24-2010, 06:01 PM
Yeah. And considering it's college radio, I dont imagine the equipment to be of audiophile quality.

Yeah. And considering it's college radio, I dont imagine the equipment to be of audiophile quality.

You never know though. The rig at a college station I visited in Oregon was a Linn rigged with a really nice Ortofon cart. All the worse... the kid that was spinning then looked confused when I asked him how often they cleaned the stylus.

01-24-2010, 06:10 PM
Yeah, I guess I should say well maintained audiophile quality equipment.

naw, I actually get the appeal of listening to old vinyls even as a concept, but the fact is that you put up your setlist AFTER your show, not before.

If I had a radio show, it'd be called ALCHEMYY with DJ Alchemy, and we'd listen, non-stop, to white noise.

I was debating whether or not I should start a thread about my new radio show. Thanks Kat for sparing me that.
