Nothing more to say, we can all move along.

i won't go so far as to say i enjoy this, but i'd take it any day over this alana grace person or anyone on the lineup who describes their genre as "southern rock" on myspace.
that being said, i'm not even a third of the way through with my "research" or whatever.

i would also like to say "coheed & cambria," but they aren't a bad band; it's the singer that fucks the rest of 'em over.

My girlfriend plays some throwback Coheed and Cambria tracks in the car sometimes.
To me it kind of sounds like the Mars Volta getting really into Twisted Sister.

I'll try to have an open mind, though.

I can't get into Muse. I tried a while ago (because people compared them to Radiohead...why?) and I tried again with their new album.
They play a sad imitation of progressive rock for guys with Hollywood hair-gel, as far as I can tell. Like––music for slightly-younger-than-middle-aged guys to work out at the gym to.

Ive seen them live (they were headlining a festival at my school and it was free), and it was not great if I were to put it kindly. The only good thing about the live show is that the guys singing becomes more bearable as you cant hear it over the guitars.

This would be perfect. I'm usually not a main stager, but that particular day was the longest I ever stayed at main.

When I saw Devo was confirmed, I assumed late Outdoor Theatre, but I'm not so sure now that I see the lineup. It will depend on how they do it...when they used to do the post-mainstage Outdoor show at 11, they would have been perfect. But now that they sometimes close the Outdoor before the headliner, I don't know. I don't see them running them against Faith No More...

EDIT Luckily I have no interest in the Sahara that night.

They had the picture of them in that airplane hangar, and their lead singer was in his mid 30's, while the rest of the band looked like they had just completed 7th grade?

Let me guess, you don't like hard rock?

I'm not a big Vampire Weekend fan, but their first album is very good. They were bad in 08 but I think I could enjoy them live if they had an orchestra. I don't like their new album but I'm still gonna give it another listen or two.

My point is, why all the hate? They are clearly not the worst band on the lineup. Iglu and Hartly is far, far worse. Maybe people hate on VW because of undeserved success, but that's a silly reason to exaggerate their lack of quality. Iglu and Hartly and Hadouken (whom I have now listened to) could never write anything even approaching the quality of Vampire Weekend's first album, or even Contra for that matter.

It ain't just catchy songs. Three Days Grace makes catchy songs. They're catchy plus somewhat unique and interesting without being a one-trick pony. And they wrote a good album with no bad songs. They might qualify as worst live band, but I seriously doubt that most people putting their name down have seen them live. I bet it's hipsters that saw their name on the top of the Billboard 200.

Claudio is singing songs that have to do with their comic book, I'm not sure if there is anything whiny about that. And he doesn't sound whiny, just high pitched. I will not be seeing Coheed & Cambria, but they're not close to the worst band on the lineup.

I think you underestimate the songwriting ability involved in creating an album as varied as the Grls debut. It's all over the map stylistically, and while the lyrics may not be philosophical treatises they fit each song. Morning Light is a great shoegaze track, but it's the only song on the album that could be remotely called shoegaze. I see potential in the singer/songwriter I don't see in any act that should be mentioned in a worst of.

TommyboyUNM
01-22-2010, 09:22 PM
They're probably more talented than many of the bands mentioned in this thread, and many people hear things on that album that don't strike me. That's fair enough. I think vocals that I don't find pleasing tend to cloud the rest of the music. They didn't really allow me to even get to the song writing or notice the varied styles in the album. Mental and literal noise I suppose.

Iglu & Hartley will end up winning this title.

Girls, shitty? I mean it may not be your kind of tunes, but there is no denying that they write some great songs.

And if C&C is so shitty, why does Coachella bring them back year after year? I don't know much about them except people who like C&C, really fucking like C&C and each one claims - "you just gotta see em live".

Claudio is singing songs that have to do with their comic book, I'm not sure if there is anything whiny about that. And he doesn't sound whiny, just high pitched.

Whiny isn't a description of lyrics, it's a description of style. My friend listens to Panic at the Disco and he called "Today" by Smashing Pumpkins (he has no idea who they are) whiny when we were playing Rock Band. So I guess we have different definitions of whiny.

Iglu and Hartly, as well as Hadouken! are easily two of the worst bands I have ever heard. I am wondering how they got booked. Im guessing it is a record deal thing. "Yeah, you can have this band, but this band must also go on the line up too" kind of deal.

Nah, I think it's purely financial. Iglu and Hartly are played on the radio, but have undeniable hipster appeal - they sound like a weak-ass MGMT. The band will bring kids out and adults who are too fucking lazy to look for good music so they get excited about the best of the shitshow.

Abe - I love Ricky and Stephen (the office and extras) but I have never heard much of the show. If I had an ipod I'd download some of their stuff.

Coheed and Cambria is by far one of the best bands that will play at any festival. If you have any complaints about the vocal prowess of Claudio, you obviously haven't listened to their (C&C's) entire repertoire. They are musically, technically, and ideally more superior than any of the other bands on the list of performers.

Any shit talkers who simply haven't listened to their progression are failed elitists who don't know what good progressive, conceptual rock and roll is. Learn to be elite because your taste in music is most definitely not.

I'm not one of the Coheed haters in the thread, but I defy you to show me a YouTube where Claudio doesn't sound like a bitch. It's just true.

The problem Coheed gets themselves in is they hired an emo singer that fits so perfectly into the bleach-blond streaks scene and people are always going to think about them that way. I'm not one of those people but his vocals certainly don't do justice to the music.

Coheed didn't hire the singer. The singer started the band and is the co-lead guitarist. Your logic is flawed from the get go. He co-writes all of the music. Not just the vocals but, the rhythm, the guitars, the bass. You obviously haven't heard more than one to a few songs of theirs.

His vocals are an integral part of the music. Without the vocals, the music makes absolutely no sense. The vocals do absolute justice to the music and the music does absolute justice to the vocals.

The only reason it is being discussed on this thread is a few haters that have no experience with the band and toss out some ridiculous one sentence posts that have no theory or fact. It's being discussed and speaks volumes because, someone who only has experience with one or two songs stated a one line post which read, "coheed and cambria". Wow, that was real deep. I downloaded a full album, Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV, when I was in college and my roommate and I listened to it regularly. We found it kind of good and kind of laughable at the same time. I don't take it seriously or hate them or anything. My favorite:

Go youtube your own music, I'm not your mother or your music wench. Don't try to analyze a band if you haven't actually experienced them. A single album you listened to in college with your buddy isn't enough to be able to say this or that about a single band.

They proclaimed, "if you don't like pajamas in public, FUCK YOU", and the show was a trainwreck of hilarity. And they looked so fucking smelly! It became a long-running joke amongst friends who were there, they were infamously known as "Iglu and Hartly, the worst band ever".

Then, a few years later, I heard a song on XM radio. I'm shocked but ultimately dismiss it as just some cracked-out DJ.

That Girls record was one of my favorite of last year. But this:

...is the kind of obnoxious, self-satisfied shit that makes people hate hipsters. The imagery in that video is just gross and decadent. I prefer my rock bands to rock out, but more than that, I prefer them to at least aspire to one day become adults.

I love hard rock, that's not why I hate those bands. As for Vampire Weekend, I just find their music incredibly irritating and uninspired. Matt and Kim is just flat out awful.

I like Girls because their music completely goes against the conventions of the Pitchfork listener; I'm surprised that audience tolerates and even adores them. They actually have melodies in their songs, something the majority of bands glorified by hipsters lack.

They are not a hipster band, the lead singer wants to be John Lennon (though it comes out more like Elvis Costello).

If you think coheed's the best in the lineup you must be a big fan, nothing wrong with that. That youtube hasn't convinced me of anything, sorry, I just don't like his voice. I'm sure a lot of people can't stand Cedric Bixler-Zavala's voice either but I happen to love it. There's a guy who can give Mariah Carey a run for her money at shattering glass.

Something tells me if Claudio would get someone else to play that guitar and just concentrate on singing they'd be a lot more tolerable in that particular performance at least. I just thought though, Coheed is on the same line on the poster as The Dead Weather or MGMT, what if they played the main stage before Faith No More and MGMT and TDW played the outdoor consecutively?

Main = The Dead Weather>Coheed>Faith No More>Muse>Tiesto
Outdoor = Edward Sharpe>MGMT>Dirty Projectors>Hot Chip>Devo

It's late, I'm just thinking thoughts. This would be one of few scenarios that would have me happily watching Coheed though. Other way around, with Coheed on the Outdoor and MGMT on the main would work too.

You need to stop smoking those fucking crack rocks homeboy. Coheed and Cambria is some of the cheesiest psuedo "prog" shit out there. Furthermore, their "concept" records are lame as fuck, Claudio's range doesn't even touch Mariah Carey's eight octaves and in my opinion they aren't all that different from bands like Thrice/Chevelle/The Used. They're not fucking Rush, get over it.

Coheed and Muse fall into the same boat. Either you like grandiose, epic, rocking for rocking's sake... or you don't. If you DO (and I do), then two of the best at it are on this bill. If it's your favorite kind of music (it isn't mine) then you probably feel one of those two bands is the best on the bill.

You have to respect the argument. The last time Coheed played they played one of the best sets of that year. Muse's show at the LA Memorial a few years back was one of the five best rock shows I've ever been to. This is coming from a guy who'd rather listen to Superchunk or Ted Leo.

The Sahara is a tough card to fill up because it's a generalization of dance music, which in itself is made up of so many genres and different kinds of ears. It is strange how they set it up sometimes, but I think it's a side effect of knowing they can't please everyone. The Ting Tings in the Sahara last year was a disaster and would have been better suited for one of the middle stages. Switch opening the day? Switch is like, amazing. Poor guy.

There's always someone who likes what you hate which doesn't make it bad. Not that you're saying this, but seems like some of the posters here just don't like electronic/dance music. That's fine. But I think we have found the finalists for worst bands on the lineup. The things that are out there and available for our consumption, that someone was creating something and said "I'm done" when they got to a certain point... it amazes me sometimes. I just think, "Wow, if I had come to this conclusion, I think I would have kept working before I started pitching record deals." But again, to each their own. Love them or hate them, someone will be rocking the Hadouken! tent I'm sure... just as the Throbbing set was eerily vacant last year.

coheed and cambria is not rock and roll? really? seriously? are you kidding me? seriously?

sry, had to double post

The singer from Coheed and Cambria sounds like he has his fucking nuts in a vice when he sings. Worst fucking voice in rock and roll.

in reality, alot of people think that his voice sounds like a vienna choir boy shot in the sack with an aluminum baseball bat.
so thats why claudio named one of his older albums "vienna choir boy"
he loves people like you! gives him inspiration.

Okay I couldn't watch more than 30 seconds of this, really bad quality, but what you're telling me is if they happen to do a cover of a classic song Claudio will make some attempt to sound human? I can dig that.

He thinks rock and roll only refers to the early 50s and 60s bands, probably because that's what it says on wikipedia. He fails to realize that most people think of rock as simply short for rock and roll.

A lot of people came up with that very specific analogy? Fascinating to know that all Coheed's fans finish each other's sentences. It's a very good analogy though.

No, because I would not consider any shitty metal or hardcore/emo subgenre or hybrid "rock and roll". And rock and roll extends far past the 50s, I'm not that close minded.

no, not that analogy alone. it was something claudio mentioned. but usually people just say he sounds like a little bitch or gay, or whatever.

and for schavira, yes they are a rock and roll band. their sound ranges from super poppy, to grundgy metal, and all of it is progressive. they differentiate and i appreciate that about them.

but im done arguing already :D besides i am pretty biased. i actually used to hate coheed very much for the singers voice. it was annoying and bitchy in my mind before so i understand other people's point of view.
but i dunno what happened, its like im obsessed and i've joined a cult.
its okay though, even if you dont like his voice, they put on an amazing show, with crazy ass guitar solos.

Yeah, Coheed is a "rock band" not a "rock and roll" band. That's not a diss, just a point of their roots.

schavira
01-24-2010, 09:28 PM
I would say rock and roll extends to a lot of punk rock/even early hardcore, and maybe hard rock acts like Led Zeppelin, etc. I would I consider something like "Pet Sounds" or Pink Floyd's discography to be rock and roll? No, of course not. It would fall under that general genre of rock, just like Coheed would. I'm not saying that Coheed is bad for not being a rock and roll band (although I do think they are a bad act), I'm just stating that it's not really the right phrase to describe them, and even "rock" seems to be kind of pushing it (you could be slightly more specific at the very least, they're not the type of band that comes to mind when I think of "rocking out" or anything).

even though im not a big fan of Jay Z, i don't think he's the worst act. that title belongs to Coheed And Cambria this year. I sucessfully avoided them in 06 and i will do the same this year.

I agree. Owl City is bad enough to transcend reality; in an alternate dimension where they are on the bill their suckitude is so powerful as to pierce into our own mini-dimension.

Honestly, you guys are fucking morons if you think Coheed is the worst band on the lineup...i'd go as far to say that only a few better guitar players are on the lineup than Sanchez or the other guitarist in the band...

Not at all. Tiesto has to be the second worst on the lineup. Guetta is definitely reminiscent of Tiesto

i would officially like to take back my vote of coheed & cambria. not because of the quite titillating debate about the (de)merits of the band, but because i actually listened to iglu and hartly. watched the video after listening to the song. amazingly, it made the song worse. unfortunately, i took a dare to watch the show (barring any true conflicts) and report back. thank god i love train wrecks or i'd have to slice my wrists before the show.

It's hard to argue against either C&C or I&H, although I must say, C&C is so bad and the singer looks so ridiculously unlike someone who would have that voice that it makes me laugh, so I could maybe get some enjoyment out of watching them. I&H just makes me want to punch them.

I don't wanna be arsed to scroll through and see if I've posted in this thread already, but my vote goes to Iglu & Hartly. I hadn't heard of them until the lineup and I just listened... jesus christ. Sounds like the retarded bastard child of Slightly Stoopid and MGMT.

And on the topic of Coheed, I personally love them but I definitely understand why a lot of people don't. His voice gets to me too, sometimes.
