It's good you've discovered Gil Scott-Heron, OP.

For me, it's been (for better or worse)

Delphic
Major Lazer
Camera Obscura
Rusko (this also had to do with M.I.A.'s latest track)

And I know this doesn't count, but I never heard Grace Jones' "Nightclubbing" LP until the lineup announcement re-sparked my interest in her.

Glad I found out about Camera Obscura, though.

I'm pretty sure Fever Ray was the most mind-f'ing/warping show I went to all last year (and excluding Coachella, SxSW and other day-long events, I prolly went to around 40). I bet if I'd been on any drugs I would have had nightmares or something for days.

Um, still have some homework to do but I did "discover" The Big Pink, Little Dragon, La Roux and Rusko literally a few days before the lineup was announced, so am even more excited about 'em!

Just sampling the new Corinne Bailey Rae now... It's pretty solid. She has a beautiful voice, but it seems kinda soft. I'm just hoping she can really blow people away like Sia did in '08. BTW, SEE SIA! She was by far the most pleasant surprise in '08. I'm not a big fan of hers and she was amazing.

That's ridiculous considering how many 18-25 year olds go to this fest.

I don't think so. Even if I didn't listen to them or own records by them, when I was 18-25 I knew who the older "more influential" acts were like Caberet Voltaire, Julian Cope, Television and Stooges etc... Those acts weren't on MTV every 5 minutes and Lord knows many acts like that laid dormant for a long time during my high-mark concert and music buying years.

Wonder if this a product of the mp3 age? You'd think it would be the complete opposite. Interesting.

Pavement's many reissues in the past few years, Malkmus' active schedule, and Matador ties makes this even more strange to call ridiculous.

Not to be a music nerd, but no one, repeat NO ONE should be typing the words Pavement or Echo and the Bunnymen anywhere in this thread, Jesus people.

You're probably right, but at the same time you can't scold people for ignorance if they're at least giving these artists a try. There always seems a group or 2 that slips through everyone's cracks for whatever reason, where you should know who they are and what they play, but you don't know.

Just going by the bigger names on the lineup, I'll admit to having no f'n clue who Public Image Ltd. and Fever Ray are. I'll sample, and hopefully dig them. But going by the poster they seem pretty popular and I don't have a clue.

For me, there's a hipster/indie/alternative station in Minneapolis called the Current which I listen to religiously. So I'm familiar with most of these artists/groups, even on the last line of everyday.
http://www.thecurrent.org (they stream for free with no extra downloads if you wanna have a listen)
here's a sample playlist to get a better idea of what they play on a given day and it's archived too-
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/the_current/playlist/playlist.php
But even with this great radio station I don't know everyone. Just don't rip the ignorant people (including me) for trying lol.

C DUB YA
01-27-2010, 08:09 PM
I'm didn't mean to scold, I do find it hard to believe none-the-less.

I can see how people wouldn't know Fever Ray. They/She are rather new (debut album just this past year). Karen is from the Knife which may or may not be still active.

PIL... well all you need to know about PIL is it was/is Johnny Lydon's band after the Sex Pistols, that and J Wobble was also in it for a tick.

Echo & The Bunnymen formed about 30 years ago man. They've been a band longer than I've been alive, and their heyday was quite some time ago too.

That said, I daresay most people are aware of them, they're just honest enough to admit they haven't really heard much of their stuff. I know fuck all about Pavement really, beyond a few of the obvious tracks, so I wouldn't claim any real knowledge of them.

Trust me he does, he's a fantastic live performer. Seen him about 8 times which isn't difficult in the UK since he played about 100 gigs here in a year
As a Brit I'd advise Frank Turner and Delphic strongly, as well as Miike Snow, Rusko and The Temper Trap. All are getting fairly big over here.

i actually got a download of pretty much every artist i was unfamiliar with when they announcement came (thank you waffles freeleech), but so far ive only put on a couple and edward sharp is what really moved me.

I was listening to SiriusXMU last night and they were playing ESATMZ. Totally digging this stuff. Didn't realize the IMA Robot affiliation too.

Totally agree with this.

Phoenix (heard of em... never listened)
Them Crooked Vultures (heard of em... never listened)
The Dead Weather
Spoon
Deerhunter

and... on a completely unrelated note, I discovered the Black Keys. A little too fuckin late, because they were at two festivals I attended, and didn't catch (coach, and Outsidelands). How I am kicking myself in the ass.

That's ridiculous considering how many 18-25 year olds go to this fest.

if you're so into music that you go to coachella, you should spend some time on allmusic.com learning about the history of music... see what influenced the music you now like, see what they sound similar to, etc. it's quite educational. look at the genres and see what the top bands and songs are for those genres. (noise rock, indie pop, shoegaze, post-punk, punk, new wave, etc)

eg:
http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=77:4558

when Interpol first came out, i discovered The Chameleons because of allmusic. everyone mentions Joy Division in the same breath as Interpol but i think that's a sophomoric comparison... The Chameleons are much closer. just an example. you're sure to find something new that you'll like that is current and something that is 'classic'.

lots of mentions of Portugal. The Man in this thread... have any of you guys heard of 'Shadows On A River'? they remind me of both Portugal. The Man and a bit of Radiohead. they're not playing coachella though

Frightened Rabbit is really good live. i've seen them twice and they were impressive both times. lots of energy.

i beg to differ,
interpol's music aspect is not as stark, a lot more dependance on reverb and the vocals tend to be a bit more melodic than those of mr. curtis...not to mention his choice for drab, melancholy lyrical content...case in point "Stella was a Diver.."

i dont think joy division would be able to pull off clear sexual inuendo in their songs

alternapop
02-01-2010, 03:30 PM
i didn't say Interpol sounds nothing like Joy Division. They have similar vocal qualities but Paul Banks probably sounds closer to the Kitchens Of Distinction frontman and musically they are much more similar to The Chameleons.

still going through the lineup reseaching, little by little.
