I've been lurking around this board for a while and am surprised about the lack of discussion about Pavement. This is going to be their first American performance, yes? I've been listening to a lot of Crooked Rain Crooked Rain and Terror Twilight lately. It's amazing how visceral their guitars sound. It's psychedelic rock disguised as indie pop.

I'm twenty-four so I never listened to them in the nineties. I actually heard Malkmus's self-titled before anything else. So I'm excited. I just pray they don't clash with Thom Yorke and His Amazing Question Marks. Pavement would sound better during the daytime, right?

back on topic...

I was lucky enough to see them 5 times in the 90s, never with Gary Young though. That would've been a real treat. I'm hoping they go all out with material for their reunion - would love some of the b sides and rarities.

When I was sixteen I attempted to interview them for a Tulsa fanzine (cyberactive - IIRC) and was so stoned and such a newb all I could do was sit there and look stupid. Good times man; see y'all at Pavement.

Yes, herr is how you address a German gentleman. However, the main character of Pavement's "Conduit for Sale!" is likely a Italian nobleman and would probably not be refered to as herr. I think it's hier, which is a variation of the Greek hiero (English: hero), a much more likely title in Italy. Agreed?

I could get stuck in this thread clicking on all the performances. So so exited for the double dose I'm getting at both Coach and Sas! Definitely my top priority in this festival. Even though they're not headliner, they have MBVs spot from last year which makes me hope they get the extended 90 min set versus the standard 50.

Just listened to S&E again, "In the Mouth a Desert" is just so damn amazing.

I've been listening to the deluxe edition of Crooked Rain, Slanted and Enchanted and Wowee Zowee quite a bit lately. I'm just getting more and more excited to see them. I only had the "cut your hair" EP back in the mid 90's and didn't start listening more until after they broke up.

venturas90sgirl
01-26-2010, 11:59 AM
Me too. I only knew about them minamally too. I got into Pavement after getting into Stephen Malkmus with The Jicks and now I'm hooked. Wowee Zowee IMO is the best of the five. (Sordid Sentinels edition is just awesome all around, especially disc 2 which has the live cuts of some songs) I do however have a soft spot for Brighten the Corners, which I think has some of their most mature work on there.

jtovar21
01-26-2010, 12:46 PM
I for one cannot wait to see them at Coachella. I missed them quite a few times back in the 90s always thinking that "Hey I'll catch them on the next tour" Then when I found out late 1999 that they were breaking up, it hit me pretty hard. By some weird luck I was always away when they rolled into town.

So whenever Malkmus and the Jicks came through I made sure to catch those shows. I must of seen them now about 7 or 8 times now. Pavement reuniting for a gig at Coachella is like a dream of mine ( much like being able to finally hear MBV in the desert!) In honor of them playing, here's a few videos of their last Coachella appearance ( the only Coachella I missed , I was in NY at the time) This was the gig, Malkmus told the band he didn't want to be in Pavement anymore, so its pretty historical when you think about it in that context.

Wow to the videos above. You can tell how tense it was on stage-- right after this set at Coachella in 99, Malkmus essentially broke up the band backstage. I think the revival at Coachella this year makes it especially cool for those of us who have missed them for so long, and for the band as well.

So I got really into these guys from like 91 thru 94, then I fell off them as I found them to be becoming bland, boring and meandering from that point on.

Downloading the discography has verified this for me, which in turn is tainting my memories of their first few records.

They sound like a band that couldnt be less interested in being interesting. This makes me sad.

And they wanted to be overall headliners?

Meh. Who knows, maybe their later work will grow on me. Right now its all like one big long brown blur.

HandBanana
02-01-2010, 02:37 PM
BTW my prediction for this year's Pavement Reunion Tour Extravaganza is that it's mainly a brand name association thing that is gonna result in a lot of non-die hard fans attending the shows and and going ".....wait...thats it?"

They are trying to play this up like they are the Pixies, but the Pixies invented a sound (maybe even a mini-genre) and actually sold some records. Their reunion shows had energy, which Pavement seemed to lack even at the height of their powers.

I'm curious where they stated they wanted to be "overall headliners" and how you know they are trying to "play this up like the Pixies." Do you have any references or are you just making this up?

HandBanana
02-01-2010, 02:58 PM
That was word around the net, and you can see from the scope of their ambitions this year that the Pixies thing is self-evident.

You can take it or leave it. Not everything has a verifiable cite. That's my take on it. Im not terribly concerned whether you disregard it or not.

Fair enough Banana. Honestly I was hoping for an article or something that I haven't read. Pavement was my favorite band as a teen and I'm stoked I'll get to see them play their songs again - however it turns out. They are covered in the latest issue of Relix - several musicians give their personal experience with the band. I found it interesting that Phish's Trey liked them so much, and really appreciated Malkamus' guitar style. As much as I love it I also thought it to be rather simple, less is more, happy mistake kind of playing if that can even make sense.

And I would love it if they played Unforeseen Power of the Picket Fence. The whole "flashback" to REM has a new meaning with Pavement being veterans themselves now.

I had this very thought as well, everything you said actually. And then I went back and revisited some of the records I hadn't listened to in a while. Crooked Rain especially, I forgot how amazing that record is. At first when I saw them on the lineup I was like, meh, but now I have totally reignited my love for this band and can't wait. However I'm still a little worried that their live show might be a little subpar, but I have a feeling it will be great performance.

My two cents.

If those setlists are anything to go by I'd say the Coachella setlist would be more hit-heavy

they played for almost 2 hours last night so they'd cut out some of the lesser known tracks for a restival set I recks

i really got into them in 1999 because they were playing coachella. i bought five of their cd's and returned two of them. i like "brighten the corners," really like the rawness of "slanted and enchanted" but really love "terror twilight!" i was pretty upset that stephen lost his voice and rolling stone talked shit in their review of the first festival, but i thought musically, hey were great. the hexx, which they did instrumentally, sounded amazing!

i'm really looking forwad to their set. and i just received their double vinyl "quarantine the past: the best of pavement" in the mail yesterday, so i'm gonna study away. i'm upset that there's only 1 song from "terror twilight" but c'est la vie.

by the way, this is sexy!

Or you can go see another band instead of taking up space for someone that does want to see them, not put up with them. If you don't like them then don't see them, simple as that.

MBV last year and now this.

Hooray for Pavement!

Just wait until they finish and all the Pavement fans leave. You'll have plenty of time to push up front.

Has it occurred to you that maybe i'd like to get as close as possible to the headliner that only plays one show every half decade??

Yeah, I get it. I just think it's retarded. So basically your going to listen to a band you don't like for over an hour so you can maybe get a good spot for a band you do want to see. On another note, it's been a little over a decade since Pavement last toured together if your on a rarity kick.

Got my tickets for Berkely show so I'm stoked. Hoping they'll pop up in LA sometime around Coachella secretly or if not then Summer. Here's a fan made video of Unseen Power of the Picket Fence which is actually pretty good and highlights the hilarity of Malkmus lyrics sometimes..

i always think it's so funny when squatters get stepped all over moments before the gig and totally lose whatever vantage point they had.

i'll be the one cutting through your group of friends moments before they start. i'm much too busy seeing all the acts i want to each day to give a shit about people's "dedication" to a band.

Alright folks, Quarantine the Past officially comes out on Tuesday. Though this will not be necessary for most fans (and we're really looking forward to Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal Edition)... What songs do you feel should have been included that were not? Anything you are particularly happy about and/or surprised that was included? Anything you feel should not have been included?

(If this has been addressed before then go ahead and school me, but I did search.)

http://www.matadorrecords.com/store/index.php?catalog_id=468

1. Gold Soundz (CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN)
2. Frontwards (WATERY, DOMESTIC EP)
3. Mellow Jazz Docent (PERFECT SOUND FOREVER EP)
4. Stereo (BRIGHTEN THE CORNERS)
5. In The Mouth A Desert (SLANTED & ENCHANTED)
6. Two States (SLANTED & ENCHANTED)
7. Cut Your Hair (CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN)
8. Shady Lane / J Vs. S (BRIGHTEN THE CORNERS)
9. Here (SLANTED & ENCHANTED)
10. Unfair (CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN)
11. Grounded (WOWEE ZOWEE)
12. Summer Babe (Winter Version) (SLANTED & ENCHANTED)
13. Range Life (CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN)
14. Date w/ IKEA (BRIGHTEN THE CORNERS)
15. Debris Slide (PERFECT SOUND FOREVER EP)
16. Shoot The Singer (1 Sick Verse) (WATERY, DOMESTIC EP)

18. Heaven Is a Truck (CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN)
19. Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kite At :17 (SLANTED & ENCHANTED)
20. Embassy Row (BRIGHTEN THE CORNERS)
21. Box Elder (SLAY TRACKS 1933-1969 EP)
22. Unseen Power Of The Picket Fence (NO ALTERNATIVE COMP)
23. Fight This Generation (WOWEE ZOWEE)

Essential songs not included (IMO):

Stop Breathin'
Blue Hawaiian
Fin
Speak, See, Remember
No Tan Lines

Bonus Round: Strings of Nashville & Westie Can Drum

I am especially happy that two selections from Watery Domestic made the cut, that EP is absolute gold soundz. Both Frontwards and Shoot The Singer (1 Sick Verse) are personal favorites.

Never was a fan of Shady Lane, although this became a trademark of theirs. Date w/ Ikea... sorry Spiral Stairs, but if any of your songs should have been included, clearly it's Kennel District (which I do love).

Let's hear it!

First time I saw them I was one of those jackasses who yelled out song titles and did that repeatedly for this song. What can I say, it was my favorite song at the time. Found out later from my friend that Malkmus actually rolled his eyes at me, which almost broke my heart. They closed with this song, and it was epic. That was a lesson in patience and I no longer yell out song titles.

Wow, off the greatest hits? I would say that Pueblo, which is my favorite song by them, to be the most glaring omission. I agree that if you're going to put a Spiral Stairs track on there, which I think is appropriate, you should put Kennel District on there instead of Date with Ikea. I also would have had Carrot Rope on there and perhaps honestly their cover of Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen.

Lorettas Scars
Pueblo
Kennel D
Half a Canyon
Ole to Begin
Mussle Rock (Is a Horse in Transition)
Speak, See , Remember
Folk Jam
Fin
We are Underused
Greenlander
Raft
Westie Can Drum
Texas Never Whispers

You can thank Pavement for basically starting the trend of obtuse, tuneless, incomprehensible American indie music. For some reason, this little Californian band ripping off The Fall on an independent record called Slanted and Enchanted became the front runners of a closet industry of pale white guys yelping along to poorly-recorded feedback. The funniest thing about Pavement was probably the fact that their first album resembled what we now think of as American indie music mainly just because they were terrible. They couldn’t write a decent tune, their drummer was a burned out old punk nobody who couldn’t keep time, and their production values were bottom-of-the-barrel. Once they had some money and some practice and a new drummer, their songs actually started to take some shape. By the time they released “Brighten The Corners” in 1997, they pretty much sounded like an off-the-wall but capable pop band.

As you can imagine, their fans and the music press were overjoyed. No, wait, they weren’t! They were angry! Pavement had turned their back on their fans by actually getting pretty decent at playing music! Their songs were no longer two-minute scream-fests with banging guitars. They recorded with more than four tracks. Of course, indie musicians could never hope to imitate that in their mom’s basements, considering their lack of funds and talent. To this day, Pavement’s first album is revered by indie fans and their last two albums are almost universally sneered at. This is all the proof I need for my theory that the main criterion for making successful indie music is that it’s tuneless and musically terrible.

You might think I’m letting Pavement off the hook on this one, but I’m not. Consider this fact: Pavement’s lyrics rarely, if ever, make any sort of sense at all. Some people would like to think that they are bizarre, post-modern, and brilliant. I think a more reasonable answer is that Pavement never had anything interesting or important to say, so they decided to hide behind wacky, nonsensical lyrics. Pavement’s main accomplishment was revolutionizing a thoroughly detestable music scene and making it even more terrible, only to be eventually rejected by those who they inspired. Good work, Pavement!

spot on
