oh god.. just got back from their show in vegas. they were INCREDIBLE. i'm definitely seeing them again. hopefully they'll play at night.. don't really imagine the show translating too well during the day.

at the end, after 1901, they let everyone flood the stage while they stayed up there for a little meet and greet. got to get on stage and meet sea wolf - didn't make it up in time to actually meet phoenix.

incredible show though. far passed my expectations. i'd easily recommend anyone who's remotely interested in phoenix to check them out. on to coachella!

It was freaking awesome. But I still say that the party really started midway through with Too Young.

just saw them wed night in reno. it was a lot of fun. they played "if i ever feel better" and it rocked. people got up on stage the last song at that show too. lots of great energy from them and they seemed genuinely excited to be playing (even in a small market like reno) i was hoping for a few more songs off United, but it was still a lot of fun. Part of my reason for seeing them was to not half to worry about a potential conflict at coachella, especially since sunday is loaded with artists i want to see

Damn, I should've stopped there afterwards. I was at Chapel instead. I know the Knitting Factory is a chain, but it sure is nice having a place to consistently bring in some appealing acts to reno! Also happy Phoenix sold out, maybe we can keep getting quality acts like that.

They should kill it at Coachella. I think they know their career is at that point of being ready to really take off after the great reviews of the newsest album and a great set at coachella

Do they even play "Everything is Everything" anymore? My friend showed me that song years before they blew up, telling me it "sounds like Maroon 5". Frankly, I listened to Alphabetical yesterday and it's pretty weird...almost close to funk/hip hop/generic American pop at times. So I guess the Maroon 5 comparison wasn't far off.

I'll never cry for a Coachella headliner but this band is in a deceivingly tough position.

-They kill it and no Daft Punk - a good portion of the crowd leaves disappointed DP never showed up.
-They kill in and Daft Punk shows up - DP gets the credit/headlines.
-They don't kill it, with or without DP - that won't be pretty...

I like Phoenix as much as the next person, but I find their music to be over-hyped and WAY over-played. I caught them in 2010, was bored halfway through, and left. They might be a "must-see" for the average fan but to me they are clearly not Coachella headlining material.

Saw them last night, pretty much the same set list as posted previously. Bummed about the lack of older material - only one song from before Wolfgang - and more than half the set was new stuff (and I haven't heard the leak). This was my fifth Phoenix show and least favorite. I'd probably prefer a set list of stuff they *didn't* play to what they did.

And I'm officially a grumpy old man. Sigh.

Hehe, should have listened to the leak. I haven't stopped listening to it since it came out and it's really a fantastic album. Much better than WAP, so i'm pretty happy with the setlists that have been popping up.

But isn't it weird to have set lists that require you to illegally download an unreleased album to know at least half the songs? I certainly wish I'd heard it, but I still find that bizarre, particularly considering they have four other albums.

Really, I should have looked at set lists before the show so I knew what I was getting/could manage expectations. Hate doing that, prefer not knowing what's coming, but it has its benefits I suppose.

Yeah, I agree. Also didn't they only play for 1.5 hours or so last night. Maybe they will bust out a couple oldies at Chella. I was hoping for some oldies last night but was happy with the set list. I thought the show last night was pretty great. They were in good form.

I would argue most Radiohead fans couldn't care less if Creep was performed or not.

Also, Phoenix doesn't have the catalog Radiohead has and has very little excuse for not playing two of their biggest songs other than some bogus sense of artistry.

1901 and Listomania are their most popular songs and they still play them. I think people will be ok with no If I ever Feel Better and Consolation Prizes. Anyway on their last tour they played all of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix so it shouldn't be surprising that they are doing the same with Bankrupt!

It's not so much surprising that they're playing all of Bankrupt! as it is that they're doing it before releasing the damn album. It's kind of insane to spend half a concert playing music that nobody in your audience has (legally) heard.

And they didn't start the WAP tour playing the entire album - "Countdown" and "Fences" at the very least weren't incorporated until at least a month or two into the tour.

But yes: their most popular songs are absolutely on WAP, so aside from the half of the concert barely anybody's heard, they'll play their popular songs.

NIN played alot of new material at Coachella before With Teeth came out. Ministry has abandoned all of their early(best) material. Tool doesn't play anything from opiate. Animal Collective always plays sets of unreleased material. When The Knife starts playing shows, I wouldn't be surprised if hits like Heartbeats and Slilent Shout were omitted from the setlist. Bands do it all of the time, it works for some and others shoot themselves in the foot when they do it.

That being said... these are all essentially warm up gigs for their first major festival headlining gig. I'm sure they would like to work out any kinks in the new material rather than a song they could probably play backwards by now.

What major song did NIN omit in 2005? New/unreleased stuff is fine but a relatively untested headliner dropping their biggest song is a gamble that could go either way.

STEREOGUM: Bankrupt! has a serious ’80s vibe … at least in terms of production. It reminded me of early OMD records or something. That kind of production can sound really dated or thin when it’s done wrong, but in this case it sounds fantastic … especially when played really loud.

THOMAS: Thank you. When we first started making records in our bedrooms — you know, when you record track by track — it sounds really dry. Maybe because you have only one good mic and everything has to be done piece by piece. I think that has stayed with us and influenced the way we like things to sound. There’s a lot of reverb and stuff on this record, but it still has that kind of — I call it a dryness, where you hear everything, all the parts — and I think that comes from the way we made records in the beginning. I remember when we made our second album we built this special little room — we shrank the room down, like, four times — in order to get the driest sounds possible. It drives you crazy after a while because there is no sense of space in the music, everything is very isolated. As a result, I think that’s a record that only sounds good if it’s played really loud.

I really want to finally listen to a real copy of this thing.

Was watching with my Dad who has never heard Phoenix. He said "are they lip syncing" and "wow this is the band that is headlining that festival you are going to?"

They weren't lip syncing to be fair. Also SNL is hardly the ideal audition to see if a band is festival headliner worthy. They did a decent job on the two songs they played but that whole talk show live audience thing nearly always come across as sterile. It's hard to connect with an audience in that format. They'll kill it on the night(s)

good band, terrible headliner

edit: perfect "headliner" to play before a big name edm act. I can see why everyone keeps bringing up daft punk because they were all conditioned to expect a big nam edm act to play after the weak headliner

My wife had the same reaction. The main problem with SNL is that it's a direct sound board feed and almost always comes off sterile. We all listen to concerts with sound that's going through air, crowd noise, stank and all other kinds of interference. We do not listen through headphones from the sound board. I wish SNL would put mics in acoustically-appropriate places and play their feed that way.

Phoenix, our Saturday headliner, is playing a $50 (well, $37.50 + fees) show at the Fox Theater this Thursday. Since when do the headliners play local shows right before the fest and since when are they so cheap? I really don't understand GV's logic.

It'd be a little late to do anything about that, if so. Maybe they need to practice their Daft Punk intro transition. (Sorry, somebody was bound to go there.)

I'm listening to their XM performance from Friday now and it's a bit lackluster. The first two songs were legit, but the 3rd and 4th totally blew. The 5th is about to start.

That's ridiculous. I don't understand the headliners this year.

Good thing I don't go to the festival for the headliners.

Too bad G.E. Smith and the SNL band isn't headlining coach

I haven't been all over the boards lately, but no one questioned the Black Keys headlining last year. Phoenix is going to kill it.

Not to the extent of questioning Phoenix. Believe me i get the headliners are subpar, but Phoenix will still put on a great and memorable show. You are seeing them headline their first major festival. That can be a good or bad thing. Hopefully good.

I think the new songs sounded great live. I am a bit underwhelmed by most of the non-single tracks on the last album, but it was a fun show. Singer is a cutie.

Seeing Phoenix tonight, which is cool, in case they conflict with someone else I want to see during weekend 2. Chances are that I will see them twice in a matter of two weeks, though.
