I am heading to Vegas from Coachella and decided to just check the journey on mapquest. I figured it would take about four or five hours. But mapquest says this:

2: Turn LEFT to stay on TAXI RD. 1.8 miles Map

3: Turn LEFT onto NM-250 S. 2.3 miles Map

4: Turn LEFT to take the I-25 S ramp. <0.1 miles Map

16: Turn RIGHT onto INDIO BLVD / I-10 BL E. <0.1 miles Map

17: End at Motel 6:
82195 Indio Blvd, Indio, CA 92201, US Map

Total Est. Time: 11 hours, 44 minutes Total Est. Distance: 831.24 miles

A twelve hour journey???? Over 800 miles???? Is that seriously correct???

No, you should get there w/in 3 hours. Get different directions.

No,Stef.I think Mapquest always tries to do the "as the crow flies route" which isn't always the best way.I think you will have an easier time if you head west on the 10 and then it meets up with the 215 around Colton(probably an hour west of Indio) Take that N to the 15 which'll take you to Vegas the quickest. It's been awhile since I made the journey from OC to Vegas, but I think it's around 3 1/2-4 hrs on the 15.Be sure to get out and pee at Zzzyzzzx Rd!

Took some of my mates around 6 hrs on a Greyhound last year, so i think mapquest is just fucking with you.

I just reread your Mapquest thing and it mapped out your route from Indio to Phoenix to Vegas. You are not coming to Phoenix first are you?Perhaps in cahoots with Yablo to kidnap Amy and take her to Vegas?
(Oh yeah, you can listen to my April 27th Mix on the way.Just click the poster on Page 2 of the Mix/Mp3 depository!)

Thanks for the tip. I have no idea why it was directing me via Phoenix; I am not going there.

I already downloaded the April 27th mix, thanks!

Take TylerDurden's route,it's better and far more scenic than the way I gave you(I've driven from PHX and OC,but never from Indio).
Unless you absolutely MUST see Barstow before you die(and I'd probably rather die than see Barstow again.)

Umm.. this is not Mapquest's fault. User error. These directions are taking you from Las Vegas, New Mexico. Not from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Oops. Who knew there was more than one Las Vegas?

What?!?!? Mapquest is stupid. I live in Vegas and that is so the wrong way to go! Take this way:

From Indio to Las Vegas
Take I-10 W
Merge onto I-215 N toward SAN BERNARDINO / BARSTOW.
I-215 N becomes I-15 N (Crossing into NEVADA).
This takes you directly into Vegas

About 3-4 hour drive.

Dude I am not staying in Motel 6 (although I did in 2005). I just picked it because I know where it is and because mapquest offers it as a destination when you type Indio.

Stef, be careful if you're driving back to Vegas from Coachella. That drive, after a whole day of outdoors and dehydration and alcohol and/or pot and/or what have you will kick your ass. I did it in '04 and we didn't get to Vegas until sunrise. It sucked.

The drive there from Vegas is awesome, though. Plenty of random, small towns that are a little scary - but mostly add to the adventure of the journey. Beautiful landscape, too.

Thanks Jennie. Sadly, as a traveller, I am used to driving the day after Coachella.

In 2004 I camped in a tent with my friend Simon. On Sunday night we all stayed up and partied. Then at 6am Simon left to go to the airport, to drive home to San Francisco. I fell asleep for about two hours, and was woken at 8am by the blistering heat. I then had to pack up all my belongings, load the car, and drive to Los Angeles, alone. It was one of the most unpleasant drives of my life. And a couple of days later I drove from Orange County, LA to Salem, Oregon in 11 hours.

2005 was okay. I stayed in Motel 6 with friends and they did most of the driving.

And last year I drove to Phoenix on the Monday morning. I had a lot of trouble staying awake at the wheel, and collapsed into bed when I did finally arrive at my destination.

I think I'll be okay for Vegas this year.

in 04, my friend and i left the camping area at 2 to drive to San Diego. I can't believe we decided to do that, and also that we're still alive. Lucky us.

It's not wooden but it has a 155-foot drop and it's quite fun.
