It wasn't my analogy to begin with. deadmau5 has put only slight variations on his live set lately, and he has fans that continue to see him and think it's the best thing, ever. Much like people who can watch the different live Dane Cook sets over and over again and still laugh uproariously at the same thing.

I am a girl, Luffs. I've also been wondering if the number in your name is a zip code, jackstraw? We could be from the same miserable city....or not.

OK fair enough if that's what deadmau5's been doing as of very recently. I haven't seen his show in a year. I decided to skip that shit he did up here at the cow palace recently or wherever that crap was.

The 94086 is in fact a zip code. When I signed up for a yahoo address 10 years ago I happened to be living there for a job and "jackstraw" was taken so it suggested 94086. I accidentally just accepted it. I was only there for a job and a couple years later moved to SF.

Oh Jesus, I'm not sure about bringing the art word into the mix. Art can be pretty much anything. Just look the success Andy Warhol had with his "art".

I was only talking about art, not success. Sure music is art, and people make money selling music. But some music is more artistic than other music.

FFS nevermind. you are right. If Brittany Spears = Art, and Jimmy Paige = Art, then Spears = Paige.

.....sooooo, anybody have any new info on this "Mau5 Surprise?"

No, we won't be releasing any new info until you see the set in Coachella. Maybe I will get some obscure behind the scenes photos for hints before it though ;)

And he does the same thing over and over again with only slight variation and people go nuts for it.

It's kinda tough to add new tracks to a live set if you aren't in a studio to make tracks, you know. Thats one downside of touring just about non-stop.

Now that he has a lot of time off, expect a lot of new stuff.

on the topic of Tommy Lee.. I think I need to stop reading this board. If I were at Coachella and Tommy Lee just showed up on Deadmau5's set it would be one thing. Now that i know it might happen, the element of surprise is gone and that is basically 80% of how that could be exciting to me.

That's something called sarcasm :) It's not the surpise/any info about the production. Although it wouldn't surpise me if they just say "eh, why not, lets try it" eventually.

ugh. fraternizing with the douchiest of the douche bags now are we joel?

Considering Deadmau5 has been working with Tommy for about a decade now, you are a bit late :)

LOL can I get that in writing? Someone's a bit too optimistic

You just did. Joel posted the same thing on his facebook, and I have been on tour with him for a majority of the dates. The only times he really worked on anything were just tweaks to songs, which you can see on the pics for some of the last US tour dates; just getting a computer, monitor and some gear off on the corner of the bus.

I do...I want to know if Deadmau5's stage set up is actually going to be something "equivalent to the Daft Punk pyramid" because if it is super epic I want to see it, but if it is the normal Deadmau5 set that I have seen multiple times+Tommy Lee I don't want to chose Deadmau5 in a potential conflict.

last question: Is it going to be a one off or will he be doing something similar at Ultra?

choice cat
02-11-2010, 11:29 PM
well the thing is, he will be in the sahara at coachella. and at ULTRA, he will be on the big ass main stage. so production may suffer at coachella compared to ultra depending how big of a trick he really has up his sleeve. But i don't see why he would save this "mau5 surprise" for coachella when umf is way bigger, more of his audience, and he's the headliner for day 2. The only way I see him saving it for coachella would be if its not ready in time for umf.

juloxx

Ultra will be different. Not the same production as Coachella. Yes we are doing something special for it, but the big stuff is being saved for Coachella.

Coachella is a billion times bigger than Ultra. Although Ultra is big in the dance music world, Coachella is big in the mainstream one on top of that.

it would just seem that for deadmau5 his performance at Ultra would be bigger for him imo, seeing as he is a dance music artist and headliner of the 2nd day of the festival. and the ultra website says they expect 100k in attendance. And what are you meaning when you say "we" ?

100k over 2 days, not per day. Deadmau5 played both days of Ultra last year but he only got like a 10 minute set on friday due to scheduling conflicts. Ultra is terribly run by comparison to coachella. I think both performances would be equally as big in their respects, as he is essentially the sahara headliner for friday.

if it were the same show why would you look it up and ruin the surprise? so you can make sure it's worth it before you go? lame. everyone wants guaranteed pleasure and it really takes away from the actual pleasure. /all of that.

I just read on Deadmau5's website that the FIRST audience to see the new LED Mau5head will be in May in Europe. So this has nothing to do with that.

And why is Coachella a bigger stage than Ultra for Deadmau5? I think it has a lot to do with Daft Punk setting the bar. Maybe he wont' reach it maybe he will, but it's there. What EPIC set was ever done at Ultra that is talked about even 1/8th as much as the DP Pyramid show at Coachella?

Also, there are at least 8, maybe 12 different stages at Ultra and they are all dedicated to dance music of various genres. At Coachella there is rarely a dance act during the Sahara headliner that can pull away very many people so there becomes this spotlight on the headliner. In my opinion at least.

Ultra will still be great for Mau5 fans. He's closing the main stage, and we'll most likely get Strobe as we are "sending our positive energy" somewhere (or so i've heard) during the closing ceremony.

Not the first or last time i'll say this but i'm going to both so i don't care which one is better.

Yeah, with Ultra you have a bunch of people at tons of stages deciding which DJ to see when there are all overlapping. At Coachella, there is only one dance stage, so no real worrying about which DJ to see when multiple are on, it's more "do I want to see rock or dance"?

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/y7tI1E6kp0o&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/y7tI1E6kp0o&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

that was by far the best set he's done. It was fun, packed with energy, and was mixed well. Since then his set at HARD Palladium was eh, and both his sets at HARD HM 09 blew. And the LED thing he had at HARD was weak shit. It took 30min to setup and adding nothing to the show. And if u bring a mau5 head to the Sahara and are blocking my view, i will crush it

Is it true that there are going to be guest appearances by Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, and Benny Benassi?

We can't confirm or deny any rumours but we can say that Neils Van Brockhoven (Tiesto and Armin's manager) has been spotted over at Heineken House and at various Yaletown establishments. It's the Olympics; if Ghana can field a downhill skiier then anything's possible.

ha that's awesome. Somewhat related story about that guy...

While I was traveling in Malaga, Spain I met this cool guy from Finland. He had been living at this hostel for 7 weeks while working as a graphic designer on his laptop and traveling around the world. He told me all about his good friend Peetu that just won the silver for his halfpipe. We watched his buddy win silver together. Good times.

Yes.

I don't want to ruin anything for you and I'm not even sure if he'll do the same things at Coachella but it was probably the best set of his that I've ever witnessed, in person, essential mix, downloaded shows, whatever... best i've ever heard him hands down. Others may disagree but the way he put together his tracks was such a refreshing break from what he had been doing. He played about 5 new tracks, i think, but he also layered sounds from his older tracks on top of his new tracks at times. The only thing was that it was SO hard to get close to the stage so while the bass was booming the highs were a little hard to distinguish at times.. then again, that is often the case when one is tripping on acid.

He spent most of the show without the mau5head on, which was also refreshing. There were a lot of closeups on his face and his controls on the video boards and he just looked so damn determined up there. He was not fucking around. I think he paused twice, maybe three times the entire set to engage the crowd and the rest of the time just went to work.

More on the new tracks, they definitely have that Deadmau5 sound but more high energy than usual. More going on than the usual naked mau5 beats.

There were over 100,000 people at Ultra on Saturday night and I would venture to guess that about 2/3 to 3/4 of them were watching Deadmau5. It was an incredible sight to behold. However, I do have a feeling that his Coachella set will be even better.

Reasons:

At least 50% longer
Less people
More people dancing (hopefully)
Tents don't let the sound bleed out nearly as much, so it should be louder
Tents also tend to have more of a communal vibe, rather than everyone just walking around out in the open.
While his visuals at Ultra (and the main stage in general) were amazing, this will be a highly unique display.

less than 3 weeks!

by the way, don't miss Orbital, whatever you do!!

the ratio of cameras to mau5heads at Ultra was approximately 1,000 to 1. I'd rather move from behind a single mau5head than to be behind a sea of people all standing completely still and staring at their camera screens while the show is going on. not that i would ACTUALLY ruin someone's precious camera but wrecking something that someone made is way more of a dick move than wrecking something that someone simply spent money on.

Yeah, unfortunately Ultra just gets more and more "walled" every year, took me 15 minutes just to go from the main stage to the FOH since I had to pretty much shove my way through the crowd. Since the set was only an hour, I didn't have much time to fight through more crowds or run around walls unfortunately (since it was about 30 minutes to get to FOH and back). I definately would have went up there if I had the time, though.

Plus the FOH had three "steps" with the bottom and top ones having people working, so I was on the second one which was empty, but any fisheye/ultra wide angle shots would have included the workers at the bottom step and made it look smaller, unfortunately. I think all the crowd shots I took were at 24mm, the widest I could get. #56 shows a good shot of how deep the left side went (the tents were along the wall) and #64 for the right side.

I keep on seing wierd comments like this...even people saying insane stuff like "he didn't play Ghosts N Stuff"! (which he did play)

I don't see how the HM set vs the one at Ultra with a bunch of new songs, a live singer, Tommy Lee on live drums for two songs, etc... is "equivalent to HARD HM" which didn't even have newer tracks like RATM - Killing In The Name remix. Even a DUBSTEP song.

A. It was a lighthearted rant, which i've already said was not serious.
B. which is more violent: breaking a camera, or breaking someone's nose?
C. having "baseball training" only means that someone can likely throw far, not that they can or are willing to fight.

Sean, i don't have a problem with people taking a few pictures. I have a problem with people standing there the entire time like idiots watching the show through their camera. True, it is nice to re live experiences on youtube, but not through the eyes of a 3 megapixel phone camera with grainy video and awful sound quality. I realize that there are about 5 people in the crowd with legitimate recording equipment. I have no complaints about them.

I don't know if this is the right thread to ask this, but do any of you know at point of his set did he play ghosts and stuff at Ultra or any recent shows?? I want to see both deadmau5 and jay z, so I'm thinking if he plays it first (which I know he has done in the past), I could just see that then run to the main stage....

Deadmau5 hospitalised by Felix da Housecat at Miami Winter Music Conference

Deadmau5 is (allegedly) being treated in a hospital following a fight during the Miami Winter Music Conference with Felix da Housecat.

The Canadian DJ, real name Joel Zimmerman, is having one of his ears reconstructed at Mount Sinai Medical Center in South Beach, Miami after the two men came to blows on Sunday night. The fight started during Deadmau5’s headline set on the main stage at the Ultra Music Festival.

Speaking to Mixmag from the Miami hospital, Deadmau5’s manager told us this morning “He was just mixing out of ‘Faxing Berlin’ when Joel looked to the side of the stage and saw Felix tucking into his rider. Joel gets quite funny about having a full cheeseboard ready for when he comes off stage so when he saw Felix with his paws in his brie he went ballistic and threw a can of Heineken at him.”

Felix da Housecat, best know for spearheading the electroclash movement, did not react well to being hit by a full can of the premium strength lager and pounced on Deadmau5 – much to the delight of the baying American crowd.

Around 12,000 festival goers watched on the main stage’s big screens as Deadmau5 was pinned to the floor by the obviously more dominant Housecat. One onlooker, who posted a clip of the event on Youtube, described Felix’s fighting technique as ‘just toying with him’.

In a statement released yesterday Felix claimed “He got what was coming to him. It serves him right for acting such a damn fool”

meh.

if you don't want to talk about him don't click the thread. btw this particular thread has been going on for a while.

deadmau5 is a hell of a producer, it's his live skills that people are debating. It's hard to sound fresh when you tour as much as he does, and most of the complainers are people that have seen him more than 5 times. it's understandable, he's not making these sounds from scratch every time he plays, these are recorded sounds, thus they are predictable and get old. if you want a turntableist go see Qbert or something.

You know what the ultimate slap in the face is, though? Benny Benassi. The guy creates one hell of an epic album in Hypnotica and then makes the also-solid Rock N Rave, and then starts touring doing DJ sets... he's still doing it! he did it at Ultra! Benny, there thousands of other DJs out there that could throw together a dj set just as well as you could, we are there for the music that YOU made, not the 3 millionth dropping of Pon de Floor.

MTV on Ultra Music Festival 2010

Italian house DJ Benny Benassi hit the stage in the early evening with a series of hair-raising, relentless party anthems that had the audience in a frenzy for almost the entire set. Along with an excellent remix of Jimmy Hendrix's "Purple Haze," the Grammy-winning DJ/producer spun his 2002 club hit "Satisfaction" and "Electro Sixteen." More notably, singer Kelis, who has worked with Benny on her upcoming Flesh Tone album, wore a metallic silver face mask and silver lace-up boots as she joined Benassi onstage for their collaboration "Spaceship" and the David Guetta-produced "Acapella."

You are not making much sense. I wouldn't bother pointing this out but you seemed determined to "get me" and failed miserably.

Whether there are 2 deadmau5 threads or 20, if you don't want to talk about deadmau5 why does it make sense to click on any of them? About 85% of the threads on here are on the topic of things that I have no interest in. Just because there are a lot of threads that I have no interest in does not mean that i must comment in each of them to show my disapproval.

Also, Pon de Floor was the most played track of 2009, hands down. If Major Lazer wants to come to Ultra or Coachella and play their own famous song, fine. But if you are an artist like Benassi who is putting together a DJ set for thousands of people, it doesn't make much sense to me. If you really think that your skills as an on-the-fly DJ warrant a main stage spot at Ultra then at least TRY and be creative. Pon de Floor is the ultimate cop-out.

I'm not sure whether you were just posting this matter-of-factly, or if you were trying to imply that because MTV thought he did a good job that the set was great. I was there. The set was boring, not unlike his NYE show. I do know people who liked it so i can't say it was a total failure but there were so many other DJs at Ultra with way more mixing talent

its about reducing clutter. the more duplicate threads there are, the harder it is to find threads that actually interest you. if a thread already exists about the artist you want to talk about, you should just post in that instead of creating a new one. it makes the board much more efficient. a little organization goes a long way. this is why people get pissed when idiots start new threads instead of doing a simple search first.

And this is why Ultra was great. When you run into this time and time again, you head over to the smaller stages for either fresher material or better talent. Guys like Benassi are just there to sell tickets and make people feel like their money has been well spent. Same could be said for Deadmau5, in a way, but i still feel like he is incredibly talented and is nowhere near finished coming up with new and great things. We'll see. I was telling my friend after Ultra that I really hope Joel does a side project that has nothing to do with the damn Mau5head... Just plain Joel Zimmerman or whatever name he wants, and then he can come out and play smaller crowds and really get down to business.

i had talked a lot of shit on deadmau5 recently (after being a big fan from the beginning) because his live sets had become pretty stale, recycled, too mellow (yes, oh my god that is a subjective opinion) and pretty much had just departed from what he was doing three years ago. i really was hoping he could win me back, but was skeptical.

this set was exactly what i wanted to hear. i think this was the sixth/seventh? time i've seen him and he fucking brought the house down. lots of energy and banging tunes. yeah the stage setup was gimmicky and unoriginal, but after about twenty minutes i got over that and got really in to it. some of the new tracks sounded great, and the rendition of sometimes things get complicated was great.

Glad to see he's started trying in his live sets again. The past few times I've seen him, he delivered 0 energy and just plain had flat sets. Production-wise he's top 5 in the dance music game right now but when it comes to DJing I think his skills are light years behind what he can do in the studio. Cool visuals so it looked like the performance was pretty good, but as a "set" he should probably play something besides his own stuff sometimes.

Just watched a few of the videos, that looks like it would have been fun. Fever Ray was not to be missed though.

If deadmau5 played as seldomly as daft punk does, I bet you this set would be jizzed over harder than the pyramid in 06. Imagine if deadmau5 went into remission after 08 and played zero shows in 09 and 2010. Then he announces he's debuting his new stage production at coachella in 2011. People would be hyping it soooo much and alas he would of delivered.

True.

Ehhhhh, his set would be held in higher regard than it currently is if he was a rarer act, definitely. There's no debating that those visuals were incredible. But musically his set doesn't hold a candle to what Daft Punk did in that tent. Not even close.
