View Full Version : Songs with Trumpet

I am trying to put together a mix of songs that feature trumpets for a friend. I have a bunch, but collective wisdom is often better than individual wisdom in these sorts of endeavors.
So I ask you, what are your favorite songs that feature trumpet, with the following preferred parameters:
- I am primariliy looking for "indie-pop" and alt-country
- No jazz or ska
- don't bother suggesting any Beulah songs, as they are a given
Word.
Edit: No Cake.

Lots and lots of Beirut and Calexico. Gulag Orkestar is probably the best Beirut example, but others are far better versed than I about Calexico.

Oh, I am definitely including "History of Lovers" by Calexico/Iron + Wine.

Check out the new LUCERO album, 1372 Overton Park. They're an amazing alt country band that just added a horn section for this record. It's exactly what you're looking for.

how much trumpet needs to be featured? Because Decemberists-16 Military Wives and Jim O'Rourke-All Downhill From Here both have some awesome trumpet lines

Anything from Okkervil, really. I would suggest "A King and Queen."
The new Sade jam "Soldier of Love" has some trumpets that are pretty hot.
Fanfarlo's "The Walls are Coming Down" would be a nice choice if you are looking for something on the Beirut/Arcade Fire tip.
Elbow's "Starlings."

I have another trumpet song in my head, but I can't figure out what the hell it is. Worse: if I tried to explain the part to someone they would "that's every trumpet note I've ever heard". It's hard to hum trumpet sounds.

yeah, but it's easy to trumpet them. i do this all the time. if you pretend like you are playing the trumpet by buzzing your lips, it's like you're humming the trumpet. i really wish i could post a youtube to demonstrate.

I'm pretty sure it's a tuba or euphonium. Too low and mellow sounding to be a trumpet. Hmmm, maybe a flugelhorn?
Nah, too low. Where are my Moon Safari liner notes when I need them?

Oh I suppose I'll have to cover the Broken Social Scene bases...
"KC Accidental," "Pacific Theme," "Lover's Spit," "I'm Still Your ***," "Ibi Dreams of Pavement," "7/4 Shoreline," "Swimmers," and "It's All Gonna Break" all have quite prominent trumpet lines.
There's a few other tracks out there with less prominent trumpets as well.

Maybe some old Violent Femmes like "Black Girls" or "Dance Muthafucker"...I'm not sure if they are using a trumpit or just a sax. What about some Stooges? Like anything off of Funhouse...That might just be a sax too. But, if u can find that o.g. "Summertime" tune I think that would be nice.
