I'm not surprised at the list the BBC put out, which consists of some artists already known (on here anyways), as well an over-hyped band in The Drums.

1) Daisy Dares You
2) Delphic
3) Devlin
4) The Drums
5) Everything Everything
6) Giggs
7) Gold Panda
8) Ellie Goulding
9) Hurts
10) Joy Orbison
11) Marina and the Diamonds
12) Owl City
13) Rox
14) Stornoway
15) Two Door Cinema Club

Too many to think of off the top of my head. You?

Delphic may have potential. I didn't listen to enough of the album yet to give an accurate guess. It may be a bit too generic to make any kind of impact.

this lists would be great if you put them in a time capsule and didn't open it for another year. as it is, some of the artists will blow up because they're on these lists, not the other way around.

10) Joy Orbison

I love that name so much! However I think sonofhal posted some youtubes a while back, and I was less than impressed.

I'm rather sure Marina and the Diamonds are like the future darlings of the U.K., but they're okay. Just take a listen to The Drums and I'm confident you'll find them to be lackluster at best. The whole Beach Boys vibe is getting old, at least for me, and Panda Bear is doing it better than anyone.

I actually heard that Drums song the other day while I was shopping and I loved it. I asked the staff if they knew what song it was and no one knew and I have been trying to find out for the last week or so. So, thank you!

But is there really that much hype behind them right now?

Sushov23
12-31-2009, 04:58 PM
Josh, it's early hype. They did some shows at CMJ and that has carried them to this point. I really enjoy the Drums E.P. Look for it, i'm sure you'll enjoy it as well.

Surfer's Blood is going to be one of the first P4K best new music's of next year. Toro y Moi will be another. Both are really cool.

All you have to do to fall in love with Fool's Gold is see them live.

I caught surfer blood opening for Japandroids and they did a really good job. They should have a great 2010 year. Toro Y Moi is another band I look forward to catching live. I think they are opening for Ruby suns.

Hey nice thread.

I cant think of anything off of the top of my head (besides my friends' bands, which, lets be honest, arent going anywhere).

Im so fucking busy these days I kind of rely on BlackSwan to come through with the new stuff (will you just start a music blog already? please, thanks). Definitely looking forward to checking out some of the music listed above.

if anyone has links to 2010 stuff/anything you think is awesome but not well known please PM me! As much as I love listening to my 3 gigs of Underworld and Fever Ray on repeat I think I need to branch out some more.

Joy Orbison already kind of blew up. But I don't see that stopping anytime soon.

So did Owl City, but I might just be assuming that based on a conversation I overheard by my sister and some of her friends.

Owl City has already blown up. Everyone I know knows about them - and we're talking about relatively musically illiterate Alaskans here.

Personally, I'm not that impressed with them. Is there some unwritten rule that for an electronic act to gain mainstream popularity, they have to be within one standard deviation, sound-wise, from The Postal Service?

Yep, put your TV on VH1, they're (he's?) on there with Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Lady GaGa. That Fireflies song annoys the shit out of me - how can anyone stand vocals more effeminate than Ben Gibbard's?

hi

I would put money on Beach House being one of the biggest indie groups of 2010 (like Phoenix, Grizzly Bear, etc last year).

I'm catching up on my podcasts today, pancakes. For new music I like Tom Robinson's introducing which is mostly bands that haven't really broken, suggested by users. I don't like everything he plays, not by a long-shot, but there are usually a couple of interesting tracks per 50-60 minute podcast.

GrossMagic
01-02-2010, 03:00 PM
which bbc podcast do you recommend? There are like 7 of them.

chiapet
01-02-2010, 03:06 PM
Well, Tom Robinson's specifically for new stuff -- the one mentioned above includes bands from listener recommendations and gives links to their myspace pages. The one frustrating thing is that the podcast is about an hour, whereas the radio show is several hours, and he doesn't give a track listing for the podcast (only for the radio show) and isn't always great about announcing the tracks. But for an idea of what he plays:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/shows/tom_robinsons_introducing/tracklisting_index.shtml

Huw Stephens's show is not bad either, I just find less bands that I'm interested whereas TR Introducing has several good tracks per podcast.

If I have time I listen to Scotland Introducing too, but it's hit or miss.

For US podcasts, NPR's aren't bad at all, but they're more varied and less focused on new music or indie music.

chiapet
01-02-2010, 03:09 PM
If you're checking out TR's podcast, listen to the Dec 21 one for a good taste. There were like 5? out of 12 songs that I liked on that one.

After Midnight Project... they are more of a warped tour style band but damn they are really good imo. i saw them at houge barmichaels in newport few years ago at a local show and been following them since. they are an amazing live band to see and the singer has an amazing live voice imo.

I think you are confused. Earlimart is neither emo or punk.

im fully aware earlimart is neither emo nor punk, and i fully support them being at coachella as your sig wish list says and im hoping 2010 is the year from them to break out such as yourelf. It might have not been clear in my post but i was referring to after midnight project as a completley different style of music i was getting at. was not trying relate them to earlimart by anymeans.

This is an odd statement.

I do see now though that you were not referring to Earlimart as a Warped Tour type of band. Carry on.

unit300021
01-03-2010, 09:12 PM
yeah i was drunk when i wrote that so i guess thats why its odd lol. but yeah im just getting at that earlimart has been around for a while and have six albums out but unless if you are really into music you more then likley never have heard of them. only reason i know about them is because my sister used to work for the record label majordomo and gave me their hymm and her album. while i like them im just hoping that they start to gain a larger scale audience is essentially what im getting at.

ok either way here to earlimart for coachella 2010!

I knew you would like them Josh, this band is young but they are really good live. I'm sure they will tour later this year, you must not miss them. I can't wait for a full length. Have you listened to the Surfer Blood album? or Turbo Fruits?

Another band i've been meaning to bring up is Freelance Wheels, their debut album is really solid. Since I know plenty of you are going to the Cymbals Eat Guitars/Bear in Heaven tour, I recommend at giving their album a shot, because they are opening this tour(well in LA, and SD for sure). They had a pretty solid show opening for Fanfarlo last November.
