This thread is for you to list the best shows you saw in 2009, outside of the Coachella/Bonnaroo/Glastonbury sets, etc. As in, an individual show that you saw with a band headlining.

Mine:

1. Nine Inch Nails - Fonda
2. Underworld - Fox Oakland
3. Mogwai - Orpheum
4. Grizzly Bear - Wiltern
5. Dirty Projectors - Troubadour

1. them crooked vultures(wiltern) - a big part is because i had been on i.v.'s and in the hospital for a couple weeks and it was just the right time for something like that.

2. nin(echoplex) - a good bookend to my first show in the early 90's

3. grizzly bear(wiltern) - took my nephew who is a great musician and really coming into his own, they blew his, and my mind

4. killers(uci) - laugh all you want, my sis and i took my mom to see them for her birthday and it was a great night with the most amazing mom in the world

5. not sure on the 5th one yet, but since it hasn't been a year since this show i will include it: snoop dog at the glasshouse on 12/26/08. hung out with my friend who runs coachella that night(don't get too do that as much as i would like to), heard so many songs that were a part of my youth, saw a bunch of cops inside who had to be on a contact high, and my feet almost froze because it was so damn cold hanging out outside that night(car read 39 degrees when i left). good times.

so as you can see, pretty much all of the shows had quite a bit of emotion involved, not all to do with the actual band on stage, but i am considering the whole night as part of the "show".

Josh, if you'd seen Boredoms, they'd be on your list.

I am quite sure it would have been. From all the reports, photos and videos I have seen and heard, it sounds like a show to go down in history. I, however, did not have the opportunity to witness it, hence it not being on my list. As for Paul McCartney, it was ok. It was cool to hear Hey Jude and Let It Be... other than that it honestly wasn't that memorable.

The Mae Shi - The Smell

Which Smell show?

pancakespancakes
12-20-2009, 01:47 PM
Overwhelming Animal Collective representation but oh well

1. Animal Collective (Henry Miller Library)
2. Deerhunter (Eagle Rock Arts Center)
3. My Bloody Valentine (El Rey Theatre)
4. Animal Collective (The Troubadour)
5. The Allman Brothers Band (Greek Theatre)

I don't get why it has to be Non-Festival? But I actually didn't eliminate any bands cause of that, just wondering.

Wilco, Grizzly Bear, 18-Jun @ UA Centennial Hall, Tucson
the Dears, Great Northern, 20-May @ Rhythm Room, Phoenix
the Mae Shi, Pre, 23-Mar @ Trunk Space, Phoenix

All in the first half of the year. Interesting.

That Mae Shi close would be #6 on my list. What a great show.

Which Smell show?

The one with Foot Village, Past Lives and PRE. PRE was pretty awesome, too. The Mae Shi killed. I wonder how future Mae Shi shows will be without that huge cast of characters...

bmack86
12-20-2009, 02:36 PM
They're going to be different for sure. That was a fun show, Past Lives were decent and PRE were really into the crowd. She went so nuts that night. That Mae Shi show was the first and only time I saw Ezra Buchla with them, so that was pretty awesome.

I haven't seen or heard from Jeff or Tim Byron, who apparently are the Mae Shi as of right now, and I'm wondering what they're doing.

They're going to be different for sure.

They are just going to play "I Get Almost Everything" on repeat for thirty-eight minutes.

It seems like they could easily get some kind of big band back together. Downtown LA is probably full of kids who can play the Omnichord who would love to be in that band.

bmack86
12-20-2009, 02:57 PM
Remember, though, the band you saw at that show was a combination of the two Mae Shis that have existed so far. At that show, it was Jeff (who is still around), Bill, John, Jacob (who are all Signals now), Ezra (who is now in Gowns) and Brad (who should definitely play with them again, as he's a phenomenal songwriter and a fucking amazing drummer when he actually plays).

Whatever they get, it's going to be fantastic because they have the songs to work with and they have all the passion that everyone so far puts into this project. Mae Shi are forever.

I don't get why it has to be Non-Festival? But I actually didn't eliminate any bands cause of that, just wondering.

Cause festivals have 87 sets and there's just no way to compare that.

If I were to count just sets - which would really be the only reasonable way to include festivals - I'd have four sets from festivals in my top 5 sets of the year:
No Age w/Bob Mould, Superchunk, Shellac and A Place to Bury Strangers.

Also that Constanstines/Crystal Antlers/I Was A King show wouldn't get as much recognition because the amazing thing about that was how great each band was. All three sets were different and all three sets were fantastic.

No Boredoms? Really/

Boredoms were at 8, behind those four, Bonnie Prince Billy, Boris at ATP and the Mae Shi. All eight of those were stunning and stupefying performances that in most years could be my #1.

I think it is a matter of taste. I love what they do and it was a great thing to experience but I like songs.
