Split the cost of my hotel room with my friend and I and carpoolchella to the fields.
This is obviously you and your friends best option.

Indian Plams is probably the closest (about a mile and a half to the gate). Some people walk, but that can be crummy when it's super hot or at the end of a big Coachella day. If you somehow get access to a bike and you manage to get a room there, score. i have stayed there twice and was very comfortable. It's gonna be pricey and i think they want the room paid for in advance, but i'm not sure because i won't be staying there this year and haven't investigated.

If you don't mind the drive, there are great deals on homes in the downtown Palm Springs area. If you are going with friends, you can easily find homes with the works for between 200 and 300 a night for 3 or 4 bedrooms with a pool and everything included! Its about a 20 mile drive, however, Palm Springs offers a lot.

India plams is good, but not the best!
