I don't know if this deserves its own thread. I think it does. I got excited.

Portishead sign to Amnesty

Portishead are releasing a brand new track, - "Chase the tear" for Amnesty International.

It will be available as an exclusive download single from 7 digital http://www.7digital.com/portisheadamnesty from December 10th with all earnings going towards Amnesty's human rights work and all rights given to the organisation indefinitely.

A video of Portishead performing ''Chase the Tear'' will also be available from 10 December at: http://www.amnesty.org.uk/portishead and at http://www.portishead.co.uk

International human rights day (10 December) marks the anniversary of the United Nation's historic "Universal Declaration Of Human Rights" on 10 December 1948. The UDHR set out for the first time in a single document the fundamental rights to which everyone, everywhere is entitled - including the right to life, liberty, security, the freedoms of opinion, association and expression, and the right not to be subjected to torture or cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment.

The link I posted has the full 5+ minutes. I dig it but then again, I have never heard them do anything I dislike.

Just listened to the song, sounds like they're continuing more in the vein of Third than the sample-heavy, trip-hop styles of their earlier work. Which is fine by me.

This has been a pretty amazing year for charity and music, between this and Harry Patch and the Chris Knox comp and Dark Was the Night and Ciao My Shining Star and Heroes and the Black Francis gig I attended last night. That's some of the best music of the year.

2009 has been nuts.... i dont like how the song ends so abruptly

I love the song, but I agree with Paul. I don't like how it ends.

I guess I'll be the first to say I don't really like the song that much. It's not bad but it's probably my least favorite Portishead song.

faxman75
12-09-2009, 12:58 PM
I like the lower tone she takes with her voice at the start and those beats are fucking intense. Probably my favorite thing about Portishead is how Beth Gibbons sings so intensely into the microphone. I hope we get a new album this year.

I like it alright, then again it took awhile for Third to grow on me also. Regardless, each new piece of new music brings us that much more close to a US TOUR.

TallGuyCM

See, Third hit me in the right way immediately. Mainly because I hadn't really listened to the band in depth prior I would assume.

Whoa...I have yet to listen to "Third," but if it's similar to this track I think I'll be into it. True about the abrupt ending, very strange. Great shit, this thread is making me nostalgic!

Win. Hopefully Massive Attack will return with an album as consistent as "Third" was for Portishead, because this band can do no wrong.

Goddammit paul now you jinxed them.

I'm gonna have to be the wet blanket. I think the music is extremely cheesy and is only saved by Beth for a few seconds at a time. I don't like this song. I'll still jump at the chance to see them perform, though.

liquidsnake28
12-09-2009, 01:52 PM
I was already a wet blanket and I agree, it's cheesy, repititve and kind of annoying. Beth's vocals are great as always but it doesn't save the song. It's a tad bit better after the 4 minute point with the drums and guitar but it just doesn't do it for me.

Now it sounds like you're just cutting and pasting old quotes of yours from the Cold Cave thread.

Noticing a pattern of what I think is good and what I think sucks? Is the "in" thing now to use generic electronic/synth sounds and claim it is amazing?

Thank goodness Beth can sing, unlike that annoying chick in Cold Cave.

Use a different word other than cheesy because all I can think of when you say that is cheesy 80's synth pop sounds. Do you mean the sample track is cheesy or all the sounds they are using and layering on top of the bed are collectively cheesy?

I like the abrupt ending as well. I don't think all songs need to have some build up or jam out then fade to them.

That fuckin beat (sample track, I guess) is cheesy and I would compare it to 80's synth pop sounds. The other sounds are welcome additions, but that beat just totally dominates the song and annoys me.

I see you've incorporated "layering" into your music vernacular. I taught you well, Faxino. =)

Thank you for the clarification Tommy and yes, I owe all of my layering knowledge to you.

This sounds like a more synth driven Devo.

Not into it.

Edit:

At least, not from Portishead. They shouldn't do new wave when they do other things as well as they do.

And I dont think anything Beth is doing is exciting either, for those of you flogging her claiming she is so amazing on this track.

It's kinda boring.

TommyboyUNM
12-09-2009, 02:32 PM
Beth isn't amazing on this track. But there are a few seconds where I think "Yes, do more of that!" then it goes back to flat lining.

The main beat was overpowering the rest of the song for me. Cheesy is the best way to describe it IMO.

New material. You all need it. Bad.

Blinken
12-09-2009, 02:47 PM
It drowns out most of beth's vocal work as well. I don't think I would mind as much if it was underneath the other sounds a bit, but for that to be the main element of the song just bugs me.

Beth is such a Coug, maybe the synth won't be as prominent in the live setting?

Maybe the synth doesn't bother everyone? You are allowed to like it D$!

i really, really like this. i'm also very biased towards anything with a lead synth line.

moomoo
12-09-2009, 04:59 PM
the synth was a bit annoying and persistent obviously... and if they were going to go with such a long, constant, boring drum beat they could have made it at least a little more interesting (like in 'Silence')...

but other then nit-picking those details, I can't help but to fucking love whatever they create... TOUR PLEEEEEEEASSSE!!!!!!!!!

12-09-2009, 07:41 PM
I could see this being the extreme song on the album. Much like 'machine gun' was the on Third. They added those harsh textures and industrial sounds as an undertone on that album and 'machine gun' was really the highlight of that sound. I would so be down if they headed with a synth heavy sound dominated by this particular song.

You could put a little more thought into it, like noting what's likable about the song. For example, this song I loved from the moment I first heard it, but over the last few weeks, it's grown stale and forgettable, but that's probably just me longing for a new record full of new material. I wouldn't mind if it sounded like this song, just as long as it's in 2010.
