i attended all of 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2009. i attended for a few hours on saturday in 2008 before having to leave. the order changes based on my mood, lol. and some of these were good performances based on my expectations & my experience, not necessarily that it was the artist's best performance ever. the cure for example was my favourite because it's the entire reason i first went to coachella and they also played my boyfriend at the time & i's song (close to me) and they never played it live so that was freaking awesome.

the cure - mainstage - coachella 2004
air - mainstage - coachella 2004
coldcut - mohave tent i think - coachella 2006
daft punk - sahara - coachella 2006
roni size reprazent - outdoor theatre - coachella 2009
sigur ros - mainstage - coachella 2006
nine inch nails - mainstage - coachella 2005
the chemical bros. - sahara tent - coachella 2006
the pixies - mainstage - coachella 200r4
broken social scene - outdoor theatre - coachella 2004

omg i can't believe i forgot the pixies the first time around. i traded them for dj marky in 2005. it was a great set, but the pixies were better!!!

They did, I ran back and forth. IM killed it though. I am pissed though, because IM plays so much (i didnt know that at the time though) and it was really stupid for me to even leave Rage for a minute (their sound system was fucked up for a lil, so thats my excuse) but Infected did an amazing set.

Whatever year it was. '03 '04 '05. There was somebody big at the main stage and Plastikman aka Richie Hawtin played the best techno set I've ever heard in the Sahara tent. It was the year when they set up the stage in the middle of the tent. There were only about 300 people there.

12-16-2009, 10:30 AM
McCartney was the headliner I always wanted at Coachella....honestly after him, I really don't care who headlines now, there is no one I'm dying to see (ok other than Bowie maybe). And as far as Portishead goes, I do love them and wish I had seen them....I saw Kraftwerk and was like 6-7 rows from the rail in front, and for whatever reason I decided to go watch Sasha & Digweed in the Sahara afterwards instead of sticking around for Portishead (who I did wanna see)...I guess my shitty reasoning was if I stayed that close for Portishead, I would get stuck up front with all the crazy Prince fans and wouldn't be able to get out (even though I wanted to see Prince too, but I didn't mind seeing him from far back)...so yeah, it was stupid (even though I did enjoy S&D in an empty tent) and I wouldn't do it again if I had a choice.

chairmenmeow47
12-16-2009, 10:40 AM
what was your favourite part of the mccartney set, menik?

menikmati
12-16-2009, 10:54 AM
I guess it would be just hearing the crowd sing along to all the big hits like Hey Jude, Give Peace A Chance, and being able to hear some other classics like Can't Buy Me Love and Lady Madonna. I've always been a big Beatles fan, so it was just awesome to be able to finally get to tell people that I've seen McCartney (in a festival setting no less). Ever since I saw the vids of McCartney headlining Glastonbury back in 2004, he was my #1 for most wanted headliners...I knew it had to happen sooner or later.

The only problem is I got sick during his set! I was on the rail front row, and for whatever STUPID reason (see I make stupid decisions when I'm up front and close) I decided to get a better view by going back in the crowd by about 10-12 rows right before Morrissey. Then my back started to kill me and I had no room to sit down or stretch it out or whatever, and about halfway into Macca's set I think I got a case of bad heat exhaustion (hadn't drank anything since like 4pm that day) and totally felt like I was gonna throw up and pass out.

It's that feeling you have like you feel like you get all pale and sweaty and you just wanna fall over...that's what was happening to me and I had no room to even move! I remember thinking to myself please don't throw up on the person in front of you. So I had to make the decision to grab my backpack off the ground and fight my way out of the crowd and to the VIP fence area where I could lay down...felt like that was my only chance for survival. So that's what I did, under heavy regret because Paul was just starting to go into the bigger hits and I was gonna miss all the sing alongs. But that's what I did.....I got out and laid down by the fence ready to die while Paul was singing Live and Let Die and all the fireworks going off....the biggest headliner ever who I wanted to see the most with the crowd singing along, something I dreamed about for 5 years, and there I was passed out feeling sick to my stomach. Sucks so much. I never did throw up though, I felt fine by the time Paul was finishing his last encore. I always sorta thought that if I had stuck by the rail to begin with, I would have been fine...I would at least had something to lean on, and maybe barter a bottle of water from the security guards.

oh wow that's intense! i never get that far forward after trying during pixies & the cure in 2004, fuck that shit. it's just not fun for me to be that packed.

i really enjoyed mccartney's set and it should probably be on my list too. it didn't really hit me until a few days before that i was ACTUALLY going to see a beatle. it's the one thing i was able to actually share with people at work. normally it's hard to convey how awesome coachella is.

ERIK, I felt the same way during McCartney (about 5 or 6 people back), and I struggled to stay on my feet during all of Blackbird (I didn't want to ruin Blackbird by having to be pulled out!). Then after BB was over, I had the crowd pull me out. I almost blacked out. I was hydrated, but I hadn't eaten anything since 1pm that day.

Also, re: Portishead, I left right afterwards and was able to push my way out ok as the Prince fans were rushing forward. I was 2nd row.

Hard to put this in order...so many choices:

1. McCartney ( I agree with Erik)
2 Radiohead '04 (orgasmic)
3. Portishead (I was in a trance)
4. Roger Waters (Brilliant set)
5. The National '08 (First time seeing them, and they delivered)
6. Prince (Holy Shit)
7. Pixies (I'll never forget the goosebumps hearing the drums start out on Bone Machine)
8. Arcade Fire (pick a year)
9. The Verve (They sounded amazing...like they never stopped)
10. Leonard Cohen (I felt like having a martnini whilst listening...so smooth)

HM: Bauhaus, Broken Social Scene, Lemonheads (just for having the balls to go against RATM), Roderigo y Gabriela, MBV

I also got sick during McCartney, I wasn't extremely close to begin with, but a few songs in I started feeling really dizzy and queasy and then got a massive nose bleed. I went way to the back of the crowd and sat down and listened but wasn't feeling it anymore. One of the people in our camping group happened by and was going back to camp so I left. And of course after sitting and drinking water for a half hour I felt fine. :P

Honorable mention to MBV, it just didn't compare to seeing them on the rail up in SF 6 months before. Lots of cholo's just fucking with their cell phones and trying to talk over the wall of music while waiting for El Cure with disgusted faces kinda killed the atmosphere for me. Also the Bird and the Bee in 08 was mesmerizing.

Seriously. i thought initially i was going to split sets between Bauhaus and a first viewing of Bloc Party. Bloc Party had to wait until i caught them at the El Rey. Bauhaus was way bigger than i expected.

Somewhat Damaged
12-26-2009, 11:18 AM
Since 2002:

1. Portishead (2008) - I had anticipated seeing them live for 9 years. I have a problem with getting myself too hyped up about a band and inevitably feel at least a twinge of disappointment afterward but they blew me away. I'm sure the mushrooms helped but during "We Carry On," I felt like they sent me to another part of the galaxy.

2. Daft Punk (2006) - This was another situation in which I worried that I may have gotten myself too excited about seeing them. This set really was all that it's cracked up to be by those breathless acolytes who were there to experience it. The shows in '07 were fantastic as well but didn't carry the same weight as this performance since this one had the element of surprise. The electricity that coursed through the crowd when the pyramid first came out and we could see they were in their robot suits was incredible. It isn't hyperbolic to say that it felt like the entire crowd was dancing in unison. The fact that any performance has topped it in my estimation really says a lot for Portishead's achievement.

3. The Prodigy (2002) - It was my first Coachella, I was on some terrific Ecstasy, and they were the first band I saw on the main stage and with a crowd that huge. "Smack My Bitch Up" was one of my favorite song performances for years after that night. I felt like the festival was essentially over at the end of their set -- who could top what they did? They were the act most responsible for hooking me in to attending Coachella the next year, lineup unseen.

4. Underworld (2003) - I made my residence in the Sahara that entire day and was foolishly not keeping myself properly hydrated. During Deep Dish, my left quad started cramping up, prompting me to retreat to the medical tent. I had never heard Underworld before but saw the massive crowd pouring into the Sahara and was intrigued. About 5 seconds in, whatever pain there had been in my leg was gone and I danced through their entire set. As with the Prodigy, I pretty much opted against seeing anyone else after them because they had just killed it so completely.

5. Paul McCartney (2009) - Singing along to some of the greatest songs of all time, with my girlfriend who was completely enchanted by the spectacle on the stage, made this so memorable. He wrote most of my favorite Beatles tracks and that I got to hear so many of them live was something I never thought I'd experience.

6. Massive Attack (2006)
7. Soulwax (2007)
8. Arcade Fire (2007)
9. Nine Inch Nails (2005)
10. LCD Soundsystem (2007)

Honorable mentions: Goldfrapp (2008), Bjork (2007), Radiohead (2004), Prince (2008), Sandra Collins (2002), Hot Chip (2007), Arcade Fire (2005), Simian Mobile Disco (2008), The Presets (2009), Les Savvy Fav (2008)

Notes: Radiohead would have probably been ranked higher if I didn't compound the problem of the heat that year with taking mushrooms all day, thereby making myself sick and exhausted by the end of the day. I couldn't even stand up to watch Kraftwerk. Prince would have probably been ranked higher if he didn't have to follow Portishead. They were so dominant that I still find myself accidentally typing their name instead of his when I'm typing up these sorts of lists.

These aren't necessarily in order:
Radiohead 04
Arcade Fire 05 (and again in 07)
Portishead 08
Prince 08
Roger Waters 08
Flaming Lips 04
Paul McCartney 09
Justice 08
Theivery Corperation 09
The Cure 04

Daft Punk 06 and Bjork 07 would have surely made the cut had I not sucked at life and missed them. Daft Punk I was just too late getting to the tent so I skipped it (lame) and I got extremely ill before Bjork's set and spend most of it passed out in first aid (even more lame).

not in order, and obviously only from the years i have attended:

Roger Waters 08 ridiculous production and one of my favorite bands in history
Rage 07 the energy was so moving, i still get chills thinking about it
My Bloody Valentine 09 took my mind to a dimension i didnt know about, and no drugs used
Chemical Bros 09 showed up every other dj that weekend
Bjork 07
Aphex Twin 08
and a random 4 that were simply amazing musically or just fun with the group i was with:
friendly fires 09
themselves 09
cut copy 08
gang gang dance 09

i did this list real quick and i'm already feeling like i'm missing a lot,

lcd 07
mstrkrft 07
arcade fire 07
kraftwerk 08
fuck me!! PORTISHEAD 08

4. blood beetroots (that was me on top of the speaker stack stage left during wake up if you noticed.)

Anyone who doesn't have Portishead or Daft Punk on their list obviously missed those sets or just hates music....hahaha

1. Portisehad 08 - absolutely ridiculous...have you ever seen someone with COMPLETE command over the audience like that? Everyone was in a trance. You could literally hear a pin drop during certain parts of this set. Cerebral is the best word to describe it.
2. Daft Punk 06 - the beginning of it all
3. Cure 09
4. Justice 08 - one of the best weekend-closing sets in recent memory.
5. Ratatat 07 - first time seeing them....the blueberry kush MAY have influenced how amazing this was...I've seen them like 5 times since this and they are always great. I was hoping they would be at Coachella 2010 since LP4 is coming out soon supposedely.
6. Paul McCartney 09
7. Datarock 08 - they are so fun! My friend lost her cell phone because we were dancing so crazy and we somehow tracked it down and fount it from some dude the net day hahaha.
8. Prince 08 - ten encores lol
9. Diplo 08 - looking forward to Major Lazer this year. diplo knows how to rock the party for sure.
10. Thievery Corporation 09

My Top 5 IMHO..

10 Fischerspooner 03 :
At the end of the decade and i look back at music fads, ElectroClash was the most fun musical fad. It was just F-U-N..

9: Groove Armada 02 .
It was still the loudest ive ever heard the Sahara

8: Chemical Brothers 99.
It was so empty we just walked up to the front.

7: Bjork 02
It was post 911 and it was just a beautiful moment. Highlight "Its in our Hands" .

6 St. Germain 01.
It was sunset and i had it was an accidentailly beautiful moment..

5: Prince 08.
Its fucking Prince!. I waited 5 hours in the front and it didnt dissipoint. The Time, Shiela E and hearing Controvery over the Coachella main stage speakers, oh yeah and his cover of creep

4 M.I.A. 05
It was one of those moments where it wasnt really hyped up @ the time and no one knew what to expect. It felt so raw and exciting.

3 Felix da house cat 03
I know your saying Felix da housecat? # 3. It was a moment. He played Personal Jesus by DM and followed with Emerge by Fischerspooner. It was one of my first moments of the day and i was alone and jaw dropped..
He also played Stevie Nicks: Stand back! (some girl next to me yellled, hes playing Pat Benatar.. :). I remember thinking this is the moment Electroclash died. It Died a fiery beautiful death.

2 Pixies/Radiohead-Tie..
We waited all day and it felt like it wasnt happening. Surreal.

1 DAFT PUNK!..well duh..yeah..I was in the Pit!

I've been every year since -04 EXCEPT '08 (couldn't get off of work). It's tragic how epic everyone thinks '08 was because at the time I was just 'meh' about the lineup. I wasn't that sad about it. I wasn't that excited about the Portishead CD. Prince is cool but I've seen him. Particulary Roger Water's ending Sunday seemed like such a let down for a headliner. Now I wish I had been there.

1/ Radiohead '04
2/ Pixies '04
3/ Daft Punk '06
4/ Arcade Fire '05
5/ Kraftwerk '04
6/ McCartney '09
7/ RATM '07?
8/ NIN '07?

My top 10, no particular order, '06-'10:

LCD Soundsystem '07
Daft Punk '06
Thom Yorke + '10
MSTRKRFT '07
Groove Armada '09
Rage Against the Machine '07
Peeping Tom '07
Portishead '07
Tool '06
Aesop Rock '08

These ten performances have replayed in my memory note for note it seems. They were all sets that just made my jaw drop and me dance harder and better than ever (strictly opinion). I just accepted that 2007 overall was my favorite year for music, it feels nice.
