Looks like Massive Attack are finally releasing a new album. They have it announced with a track listing on their website. Some of the tunes were already on the "Splitting the Atom" EP. It's out Feb. 8, 2010.

I'm excited. Im hoping for a headlining spot at Coachella this year, or at least a US tour.

My mistake, the album is called "Heligoland". I got a bit excited.

Martina, who is credited as a singer on this album, performed with Tricky and she's fantastic. I would love to hear some more soulful Massive Attack songs, more like the first two albums or the great song "live with me"

Horace Andy is back on board too. He's the shit. I can't wait for this. I really liked the EP

i wonder if tricky is pissed MA is taking his singers

Woo!
But what happened to the better title "Weather Underground"?
And ugly cover. Since when are they on their own album covers (relatively, in this case).

Tracklist:
1. Pray For Rain (featuring Tunde Adebimpe)
2. Babel (featuring Martina Topley-Bird)
3. Splitting The Atom (featuring Robert del Naja/Grant Marshall/Horace Andy)
4. Girl I Love You (featuring Horace Andy)
5. Psyche (featuring Martina Topley-Bird)
6. Flat Of The Blade (featuring Guy Garvey)
7. Paradise Circus (featuring Hope Sandoval)
8. Rush Minute (featuring Robert del Naja)
9. Saturday Come Slow (featuring Damon Albarn)
10. Atlas Air (featuring Robert del Naja)

And according to the tracklist, none of the new material they did on their 2008 tour has made the cut. They damn near played an albums worth of new songs on the last tour, and some were really good.

Like these ones. Wanted to hear the studio versions of these...

they may have morphed or changed names. they may end up as b-sides. I thought they had worked with dot allison on this one too?

on the other hand maybe they recorded a whole album's worth of material then threw it away and started over. selfish bastards.

And they already said they are coming early 2010 to the states.

Anyhoo, BlackSwan, i was gonna post ALL of them, but was being brief and put the 2.

I kinda doubt they changed any song titles or anything. These tracks are prolly doomed to sit on a shelf for years and years before seeing the light of day...
And they were indeed working with a bunch of vocalists for the past several years. Looks like that all changed.

And once again, ugly album cover (seems april-fools-ish), but surely the music will be great.

You could say that. Then again, you could say a lot of Massive Attacks shit is repetitive. I would. But I think it's repetitive in that hypnotic kind of way. Protection, by far one of my all time favorite songs, is pretty much just a heavy bass line, a snare, and a pretty piano line.

That is true, but the older stuff that was repetitive was really good, and fresh for the times. It seems like they haven't evolved much musically over the years and are resting on the doing the same tricks they always have done, but just a little differently, with a little less creativity. Basically, I agree with this review: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13574-splitting-the-atom/

I think all of the tracks I posted are better than the two real tracks from the EP, but then again, I haven't listened to the EP for a while. I'm going to give it another listen tomorrow and have a fresh opinion.

I will say that I do enjoy the remix of "Bulletproof Love". I was hoping the original version would be on the album, which it isn't.

I wouldn't necessarily call it repetitive. All their stuff is groovy, back to back groove, so you definitely get lost in the album, and everything has the same tone. This isn't news, it's Massive Attack, they've always been like this.

I think the EP is excellent. Can't wait for the album, and finally...the tour.

"Pray for Rain" is pretty good song, but it has one major problem that is a great example of what I was trying to get at. The songs starts to go somewhere interesting around 3:40, and gets there at 4:20. It should end at around 5:20, instead, they repeat the first verse starting at 5:27 like they just copy and pasted it there, and then the songs ends like that. Lame.

False Flags is excellent and was a good opener live when I saw their last tour a few times.

Stoked for the new full length record.

No such thing as saying too many times that Paul/GV NEEDS to make sure they are at Coachella 2010. There are a few bands I think to myself how fortunate I am to have seen live. MA is one of them and I'm always hoping for at least one more opportunity.

Btw, Tool is my favorite 'big' band. Sorry again about the asshat meatheads in '06, MA.

I tried chalking it up to the fact that Tool hadn't played in a long time and people were just gettin antsy. But there was one girl next to me who would not put a clamp on sayin shiat like "Come on, get off the stage- Tooool!". I finally asked her to kindly put a sock in it and that some people were there to see both bands. I got a quizzical look and she continued with her berating of MA.

Anyway, Tool has a habit of letting unsusual and musically diverse acts go on before them without much care or thought given to what their "fans" might think. See Melt Banana. I gotta say tho, in hindsight nothing comes close to watching the meatheads get uppity during MBV's holocaust bit at APW. :)

orly? I always wondered how those shows went. I just love how Tool has treated the west coast to such openers as King Crimson and Tricky, yet it's always some shitty growling metal band like Messhugah when I happen to see them.

In 2006? Well, I remember reading that both Mike Patton and Massive Attack enjoyed working together on the Peeping Tom album... but they both felt they could create a better song together. So that is why MA invited Mike Patton back to work on this album. Guess it just didnt work out...

And with the original singer too.

Yeah it kinda does.

I love excellent album artwork. But at the end of the day, it in no way influences my opinion of the music. It's really not important at all.

Besides, I think the Heligoland artwork is creepy as Hell.

Mammoth85

Well I'm not discouraging effort when it comes to album art. I just don't think it "matters" when you look at the big picture.

I love excellent album artwork. But at the end of the day, it in no way influences my opinion of the music. It's really not important at all.

I know that artwork doesn't always compliment the music, but I tend to like to listen to things that are aesthetically appealing to me. Plus, when an album's sound matches the quality of the art (look no further than Mezzanine) it's really something.

If that's the actual album art, it's definitely going to make me feel less inclined to pick it up, that's all.

I agree. Like how Radiohead and Stanley Donwood go hand in hand. He just knows those guys so well and they click perfectly. I'd say for me it's just a plus if the artwork is interesting though.

I know that kind of kinky shit turns you on, Randy, but it's high time you learn that such a preference is a fetish and not the norm.

Don't worry, I'm sure one day you'll find a little boy who enjoys a good dirty sanchez as much as you do. You just gotta have faith.

I do not like the album versions of "Psyche" and "Flat of the Blade" (Bulletproof Love?) as much as the EP remixes -- in fact, I'm not sure if I like the latter song at all on here. Standout tracks on first listen are
Babel, Girl I Love You, and Paradise Circus. Definitely need several more listens for my final opinion. The album version of Psyche is not as bad as I feared it would be, but it definitely loses something without that harmony.

---
R: And how long has the mix been going on for?

D: There’s umm... a bit of tooing and froing on the mix as usually. But, we’ve probably mixed about 10 tracks, 11 tracks. We’ve got another 3 tracks to mix, and we’ve got b-sides and things but, the album will probably be about 11 tracks and b-sides and stuff.

R: And the b-sides, are they coming out on your site now before Christmas or something. What’s the plan there?

D: Well, we’re going to put a couple of things out before Christmas, a couple of mixes, put the album out in Feb and put an EP of new material out in probably May. That’s kinda the plan.

R: Another EP out next May?

D: Yeah.

Massive Attack reveal intense new album sessions with Damon Albarn

Massive Attack have revealed how Damon Albarn made them work intense full-time sessions in his 13 studio to record two songs for the Bristol band's new album 'Heligoland'.

The follow-up to 2003's '100th Window', for 'Heligoland' band leader Robert '3D' Del Naja drafted in Albarn to work on two songs, but the Bristolian said that Albarn was initially wary of the band's famously drawn-out methods.

"He [Albarn] was like, 'I want to work with you, but I'm not getting sucked into some nine-year-long Bristol dope-haze'," he told NME.COM.

He added: "[Albarn] said] 'We'll work 10 to six, at my studio, for five days and that'll be it'. The irony was that it was him who ended up instigating all the bad behaviour!"

Adding vocals to their song 'Saturday Come Slow' and playing keyboard on 'Splitting The Atom', Albarn is just one of a series of collaborators on the album including Horace Andy, Martin Topley-Bird, TV On The Radio's Tunde Adebimpe and Elbow's Guy Garvey.

Interesting... I didn't know he played keys on "Splitting The Atom."

I'll see them on their tour. The album's really grown on me, especially the Damon track. Fever Ray makes up for Massive Attack's omission.

You didn't see any of the Fever Ray shows?

Yeah, not a big deal that they're not on the lineup. I'd almost rather see them in a nice indoor venue with great acoustics than at night in the Mojave or wherever it'd be.

Unfortunately no. I've seen Massive Attack several times. I'm going by who's rarer, so if GV went with Fever over Massive, I'm happy.

Wait, Massive Attack played ON MAIN STAGE BEFORE TOOL.

Just got this email.

Not long now until February 8th and the release of the new Massive Attack album Heligoland. If you haven't already, you can pre-order the CD from Amazon, HMV, Play and Recordstore. We're also pleased to announce details of the iTunes Deluxe Version, which includes six bonus tracks (two of which are exclusive to iTunes) and extra artwork; you can pre-order this version of the album HERE. We'll have news of the vinyl edition very soon...

Adding to the build-up of Heligoland's release, Pete Tong premiered Gui Boratto's remix of Paradise Circus on his Radio One show (8th Jan). Another new track 'Girl, I Love You (She Is Danger Remix)', featuring Horace Andy, is now available as a free download from RCRDLBL and Soundcloud and is also streaming at massiveattack.com.

As you may have seen, a series of special films have been commissioned to accompany tracks from Heligoland; so far we've released Splitting The Atom by Baillie Walsh, Paradise Circus by Toby Dye (not safe for work) and the United Visual Artists animation for United Snakes. There are more to come, so look out next week for Flat Of The Blade and another take on Splitting The Atom.

To celebrate the release of Heligoland, Massive Attack will be performing three concerts around the UK in aid of the
HOPING Foundation; Brighton Dome (9th Feb) and HMV Hammersmith Apollo (11th Feb) have sold-out but tickets are still available for Newport Centre on February 8th.

Thanks...

So next week, new videos for Splitting The Atom and Flat Of The Blade (my new fav! sounds like something that would have been on Bjorks VOLTA).

I hate the fact that iTunes is where the deluxe edition will be available. I'd prefer to have the physical copy of the CD, especially since I've already downloaded the album, but there isn't any incentive to purchase it other than to have the artwork.

Did you guys get a real leak yet? I got a promo copy in the mail today so one should be out soon.

yes, we've had a real leak for a while.

Maybe he meant a better quality one?
I tried another leak download, hoping it was a CD rip.
Not so much. Most of the tracks sounded better than the first leak I got, but FLAT OF THE BLADE was slowed down and sounded shitty (some people might think this is the real song!).

100th Window, minus "Prayer for England", is a masterpiece.

That album is good, but far from a masterpiece. And Prayer For England is easily the best track on that entire record.

The only song that has jumped out at me so far (where I stopped what I was doing to look at the track name) is Rush Minute. This feels the most like the Massive Attack I know and love. Most of the other songs are alright but... I dont know. They just dont deliver entirely. I think the Guy Garvey track is the weakest on the album.

Disagreed entirely. The album has a consistent dark, etheral feel to it that is very much complimented by 3D's vocals. The string harmonies just match up so well with all other musical components. And I think "A Prayer For England" just stands out - it's kind of a simplified "dark" song that doesn't fit with the rest of them imo.

However, I agree with you 110% here. This is the only song that stood out for me, too. It sounded like Massive Attack. The rest of the album sounds more like an UNKLE album. I feel like this album relied too much on collaborative efforts, and thus it sounds more "pop" oriented than it should be. It's not necessarily bad, but I feel like it could be much better.

Prayer is my 2nd most played Massive Attack song according to my last.fm.

I just love Sinead on that track. That was the song that made me go back and dig deeper into the rest of the album.

Well now I'm curious, Brandon, what is the #1 most played Massive Attack song?

Mine would probably be Butterfly Caught.

WTF?
The FLAT OF THE BLADE video sucked.
I kept thinking its gonna lead up to something...
And I expected a new SPLITTING THE ATOM video to actually rework the boring first version...

Dear Massive Attack enthusiasts,

Does anyone have any Daddy G solo work they want to share with me? Most specifically the DJ-Kicks mix? WANT VERY BADLY!

Grazie,
