Wow, this is kind of expensive with lodging and everything. 500+ dollars for a three person room at Kutshers plus the 250 ticket fee...hmmm. Just from my one day there this year though I feel like it would all be worth it.

Coachella vs. ATP vs. Bonnaroo this year, it seems

The rooms aren't that expensive when you have roommates.

I am totally down to buy my ticket. I am probably going to get a 4 person room but since totaled that is around $1000 anyone else know FOR SURE they want to go and want to be in my room/pay me their share? (I'm looking at you, Bmack, Brad, John, Omar, etc.)

I can't commit to this until I know my summer job situation... which probably won't be 'till january. I'm also not on board with the lineup thus far (but it's Sat and Sun that really matter), although Raw Power will be incredible, but Mudhoney is not my thing at all... Plus... I may go to the Groening one instead... that's already looking unbelievable.

Weren't rooms cheaper last year? Is it 'cause of the paypal fee tacked on if you buy via presale? I think I might wait because nowhere do they say the price will increase if you buy from a retailer next week, and since there won't be paypal fees it might even be cheaper.

I would imagine so, and paypal is pretty stingy nowadays on fees.

Corinna, I just checked what we paid last year (converted from pounds to USD), and it was exactly $160 more. We did a 6-berth room last year, so what we paid for our 2 tickets and 5-berth room seems on par with last year.

miscorrections
11-20-2009, 09:01 AM
I checked and for a 4 room it was like $166 per. I know bumping that up to $177 isn't THAT much more but hey, $10 is a case of shit beer.

Room buddy. For sure. I can probably swing the money right now, but it'd be easier come January when I get my loan fundage again.

I'm so happy they're doing it during Labor Day weekend. It means I won't miss a friday class (because fuck that, I'm not having friday class next year) and I won't miss monday since our school gives mondays off for Labor day.

Highly considering this since monolith is gone. what was the total amount that you think you spent on this trip?

bmack86
11-20-2009, 09:26 AM
When all was said and done, probably close to $800 for tickets, flight, room, rental car, food, alcohol (and there was lots of that) and merch. Worth every cent.

Ok, so even though I might be teaching in the fall, it's over labor day weekend. I can swing it, right?

Still deciding over Kutschers or the Days Inn...But the days Inn ended up being like $101 night for three nights with three people...How much per person is the Kutcher's room looking at? $177?

You know what, fuck it. Corinna, can I hop on a room with you all? I need more pink wallpaper and fuzzy paintings of seasides in my life.

I would be happy to get a larger room (6 berth) since John, Bryan, Omar, and you are wanting to share a room. I will be buying next week when I get paid so everyone needs to tell me that they are ok with having a 6 person room and I need 2-3 people (preferable 3) to pay me either before I buy next week or right after. Cool?

bmack86
11-20-2009, 10:20 AM

I listened to Raw Power today. Committing to this essentially means I will have to choose between Bonnaroo and Coachella as my other festival (if there is one at all) but I have trust in ATP. That one day was so great, and considering I only went into that day really familiar with two bands (Flips and No Age/Bob Mould)... IGGY!

I just realize that last sentence made no sense, whatever.

For the Don't Look Back sets the band typically plays only the album, unless the album is shorter than their allotted time in which case they will play some other stuff too. The time slots generally vary from 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes.

Friday, the average set ranged between 40 minutes and 1 15ish. They started music around 12 if I remember correctly, and they ran late so it was going til probably 1 or 2. SUnday started later, and I'm not sure when the Ocropolis ended, but the Flaming Lips went til the bitter end.

being a girl is awesome. i repeatedly snuck in between three to four bottles of bud light in my large saddle bag this past year. some guards never searched me --- "oh, it's just a lady purse full of lady things" (what i imagined they said as i walked in) --- and the ONE time i got stopped, the guy looked at my bag --- mind you, i had an awesome jacket (that i lost in CT on the drive home) and a polaroid, so the thing was stuffed --- and said, "oh, it's probably heavy from all that makeup."

although i was slightly offended, i just walked right in and enjoyed my beer. hooray.

I put a bottle of vodka in my tote bag, totally uncovered and just hanging out on top, when I was bringing in the bags of snacks from WalMart. Security guy looked at the WalMart bags, asked, "Do you have any alcohol in there?" and didn't look in my tote at all. Easy peasy.

They checked my bag and made me take my six-pack of beer back to the car, which I later procured once the main check-in flurry subsided. Yeah, we got a few in though. I remember the first time we walked up there you were carrying your law books on your head and the guy made you open the bag for him. I was standing behind you thinking the guy was going to make me open my bag, which was full of liquor, but he didn't. It's easy to sneak shit in. I did get caught with an outside beer. All they made me do was chug it. I partied way too hard at this last year. It was a little embarrassing.

I'd like to go to this again, but will have to wait until more of the lineup is announced to make my decision. I am only going to one music fest this year and it's not Coachella so I have to make my decision wisely.

I can still imagine them being spooky and cool, on their own time, at a venue of their own choosing, but they couldn't keep any of those audiences' attention in such big spaces. They don't engage the crowd at all, and that's fine, but they were the wrong band for the occasion and they sucked all the energy out of the room.

It felt like they were only there because Win Butler loves them, rather than there because they were the best band for the job.

Most of that makes sense. Opening for somebody at such a show is a shitty job, but, hey, how else're they gonna play in front of so many people?

I saw the Distillers open for Pixies and if that had been the first time I'd see them I'd've come away with the idea that they had no energy live and don't engage the crowd at all. I saw them at their own club show, though, and know that this is not the case. 400 people who want to hear you >> 4000 people who don't, at least for helping set up an exciting show.

Clinic, at their own 300 capacity club show, were engaging and energized the room.

mountmccabe

I wonder what it would've been like if Arcade Fire had opened that Clinic show; they'd've been about the right popularity/recognition level - that is to say, none - to do so.

I think the type of crowd at a show is crucial as well... with arcade fire, their crowds are pretty diverse. but if you go to a show that has a narrower appeal, you are more likely to get people that are into opening bands.

the best example i can think of was seeing Liars and Yeah Yeah Yeahs open for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in 2002. Everyone was way into the openers even though most people weren't really aware of who they were.

I think the type of crowd at a show is crucial as well... with arcade fire, their crowds are pretty diverse. but if you go to a show that has a narrower appeal, you are more likely to get people that are into opening bands.

I am not sure how much it matters what band it is if you're talking many thousands of people in the crowd for a non-festival show. There just aren’t that many people interested in such bands and such shows that are that going to be excited for openers and or knowledgeable about them unless they get the same level of exposure/radio play/etc.

And I guess the other thing is that when there are 300 people at a show, if there are 30 that are excited about an opener they can dominate and jump around and, potentially, draw others in. 500 people in a crowd of 5,000 won’t be able to make the same impact.

the best example i can think of was seeing Liars and Yeah Yeah Yeahs open for Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in 2002. Everyone was way into the openers even though most people weren't really aware of who they were.

I wanted to go to that show even though I didn’t like Jon Spencer at all. If there had been a Phoenix show or a weekend show closer to me than Denver I would’ve gone just for the openers.

I will go to plenty of small shows here just for the opener but if it’s big and/or expensive that won’t be enough to draw me.

So basically I agree that the type of crowd is important but I think that within the realm of shows we’re talking about – some sort of indie or alternative, new or not – as a crowd grows it’s going to get more and more diverse and closed, in the way that you mean.

mountmccabe
12-08-2009, 01:43 PM
Or, put another way, what other bands could draw 4,000, 9,000 or whatever and still get an audience that is going to be cool with opening bands that most of them do not know?

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion did not have a #1 hit single in Belgium. Jon Spencer wasn't playing to many thousands of people each night on that tour.

Just out of curiosity, who would be the perfect opener for AF for your tastes?

Depends. If it were an ideal world, and they were playing a nice, small venue and nobody else mattered but me, I'd have either Land of Talk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StEIcx9YY2g) or HEALTH (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLj23sbIkLY). Good bands with a couple of great songs, who are distinct enough from the main event not to waste my time, but at the same time can project enough energy to warm up a small crowd even without huge name recognition.

Bigger audiences, I honestly can't think of anybody I'd like in that slot more than LCD Soundsystem, but I guess that ship has sailed. Beirut or maybe Wolf Parade, I guess, but both of those are fairly safe and predictable. Anyway, somebody not necessarily cut from the same cloth, but who has the kind of pace and presence to command a fairly diverse and restless crowd looking to move. That'll do.

Yeah, the Bowl show. They did outshine Arcade Fire that night. They were amped for it, and Arcade Fire seemed a tad too subdued, especially given that the Greek show they had done earlier in the year was so flat.

That makes me sad to hear how awesome LCD Soundsystem was, even though I wasn't into them then. Only arrived in time to see Arcade Fire, damn LA traffic.

Oh wow... I had awesome seats for the hollywood bowl show. Good times... especially when some milfs tried to ruffie me.

At The Hollywood Bowl? I have a friend who went and he said LCD blew Arcade Fire out of the water.

I was there and I can support this claim.

That was an awesome show, despite some bitch kicking over our bottle of wine and shattering it.

I find myself going to show more for some of the openers now.

I imagine we'll get the curators once the aftermath of this weekend settles down.

I want my curators already.

Also, to add fuel to my "Arcade Fire could be curators" prediction, apparently they are listed as having a U.S. tour in August/September (see Joy Parade thread).

Can anyone cover their room yet? Funds are low.

Well, my boyfriend and I discussed it and we're only doing one day of Coachella this year (Sunday for Pavement) and saving our money to go to ATP instead (teaching position barring, of course).

C, I'll keep you updated (I'll know about teaching on Thursday) but if we both go, I'll assume that means we'll be getting a room together, so I might have to back out. Do you have an alternate?

No, but someone will probably crop up.

Dude, it's yrs. After discovering there will be no single day tickets this year, Chris and I are pretty much like FUCK THAT and going to ATP 100%.

Well, still just wait a couple months. They would be stupid not to sell 1-day passes eventually.

kitt kat

It's totally a move to save their asses from a pretty scattered lineup; it's how they'll wrangle picky people like myself into going all three days to see like 10 bands total. definitely a monetary issue in that they'll sell a large amount of pricey tickets, see people who wanted to go two days go all three and spend money on incidentals (which i'm sure they get a cut of...)

but yeah, i think there will be single tickets come march when the 3 days aren't selling well with people who have to work or aren't crazy about muse (barf.)

honestly, i wish fever ray was on sunday and i wouldn't be so upset.

i think i'll just hide in this thread from now on.

Let's hope so. ATP is looking more likely for me.

You know, I kinda hope I get a shitty TFA assignment so I know I'll be able to go to ATP. I have no idea if schools start before or after Labor Day around here, and even so, I'd have to set up my classroom...

A crappy assignment will guarantee I say "Thnx but no thnx."

In light of Coachella-related matters, it's looking increasingly likely that I will make it to ATP NY. YAY.

It sounds like both Becca's and Corinna's rooms do not have space for two more. So I'm probably going to start a new room -- let me know if any of you want in.

Are you not attending Coachella this year Courtney?

Well, I'll need a hard confirmation from either Brad or you, Courtney. Since Brad spoke first he gets priority but if you're serious about going, and I don't get confirmation by the end of the week, you can have it. I hate to take a hard line on things but I still haven't been fully paid back for the room and it was a rather giant expense. I haven't even been able to buy my ticket yet.

Courtney

Ahh, confusing!

Ok. So Becca says that I can stay in her room, which would be lovely because she is a kick ass roommate. But maybe it would make more sense for Brad and I to switch, if he can't send the money immediately and I can? I would be happy with either room, so whatever works for everybody.

The only thing is that I am coming with a friend, so I'm looking for space for 2. Corinna do you have a double bed free or just a single?

rskapcat
01-20-2010, 11:45 AM
And I'm fine with either scenario. I like both of you, and I don't want Corinna to be screwed. :)

I am in a 6 person room. This includes me, John, Omar, Bryan, Jared, and one more spot open. I am not sure how the 6 person rooms are set up, but I imagine it would be slightly uncomfortable with 7 people.

Don't worry, Becca, I won't be screwed. If I have to wait longer so be it, but I'm confident that spot will not go unfilled.

Courtney
01-20-2010, 11:49 AM
If it's like last year, it will be two double beds, one sofa and one roll-away cot. So it's probably better if I stay with Becca because she has space for two.

Hey all.

Hopefully have some big news for you all in next week, thanks for hanging in there.

Peeeeeeeeersonally (and lets hope i dont get banned for this) re: Coachella, although i've never been to it, i just cannot imagine being at a festival where you couldn't drink whilst watching the bands. Yes it makes me sound like a stereotypical drunken britisher, but i just can't imagine it. plus the intense heat + huge crowds + slightly shitty parts of the line-up etc makes it sound like a hellhole for me personally. but i'm probably wrong?
