By the way we now have tickets available at Other Music in NY and Aquarius in SF in case people want to buy them with a slightly smaller booking fee.

Hm, I'll have to go by Other Music. I'm assuming they accept credit and/or cash? Nice.

How much is the ticket compared to buying it online, for anyone who bought theirs already

dorkfish
03-18-2010, 01:40 PM
To be fair, they're selling the tickets online through Brown Paper Tickets, so the booking fees are about as minimal as they can be.

bmack86
03-18-2010, 02:26 PM
The difference is only 10 bucks I think, but if you're near the place, might as well save 10 bucks.

jamie_atp
03-18-2010, 02:34 PM
its $5 per ticket from the stores, a few dollars more online. we're very pleased to be working with brownpapertickets on it this time as its working a breeze and we had a few problems previously using a uk based ticketagent for all you yanks.

wmgaretjax
03-18-2010, 02:35 PM
brown paper tickets rocks. you guys made a great choice.

bmack86

Seriously. They're so much easier to deal with. They did the 88Boadrum ticketing and they worked that so well.

This year, I had a problem with my order at Brown Paper Tickets. I emailed them. They responded in 3 minutes and had the problem fixed.

Same thing (different issue) happened last year with the British company. I emailed them. It took about 40 days to get the issue fixed.

Brown Paper Tickets is awesome.

Now that Lightning Blot is out, I hope Lightning Bolt is still in contention.

Announcement has been delayed for a bit, but not too long. We were gonna go for it but then sxsw crept up on us; if we announce now no one will notice. But this does mean we have more time to add some more acts on.

Darn you SXSW.

are the raincoats still celebrating their debut album's 30th anniversary? that would look good on friday.

OMG. I WOULD DIE.

Who're Avi Buffalo? They're on some bill for a show I'm going to here; should I make sure to catch 'em/'im?

LA band of little kids (no seriously, they're 18-19) just signed to Sub Pop. Didn't like them before...but they've really matured. Lots more riffage. They were really good at the Sub Pop sxsw showcase.

I would enjoy seeing Demolished Thoughts. They only play covers, right?

Um. Yes. But I saw them at SXSW and it was the highlight of my week. I was such a fangirl. Thurston Moore screamed in my face (+1) and I got kicked in the head (+1). Amazing.

I haven't been here in a while, I know...But big announcement? Shit, SXSW just ripped me and my boyfriend a new asshole. Jamie, does the "announcing when it's threat level red to buy tix" offer still stand? I would buy them next week, but I just spent a pretty penny on this trip (even though my badge was free...)

I'd like to throw out Happy Birthday. I think they're my new favorite "new" band.

And Jared, I'll back you up on the J. White hate. I would be so upset if he was there. Grrr.

well while i wait I may as well play a guessing game too, since ATP has become my obsession since last year's ATPNY. this is about half my desire and half realism(ok, 65-35) :)

Friday:
Slint (Spiderland)
Gang of Four(Entertainment)
-Comedy
Tim & Eric or CoCo, more likely the former

Saturday:
Tortoise & Avi
Spiritualized (ladies & gentlemen) - day opener
Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Modest Mouse or Pavement("headliner" past curator bands - MM is in Ireland on Friday though)
Bardo Pond
Shellac
fursaxa
Bradford Cox to some capacity
J Mascis in some form
snow patrol ;)

Sunday:
Tom Waits
Some incarnation of a Wu-Tang reunion
Boris
Neu! or Can or something to that extent
Sunn 0)))/Earth perform together
Del-Byzanteens

Other:
Asia Dog
Frankie Don
Bill Murray in attendance

ken516

That would be incredible. I've loved Go4 since I was a kid and I've never had the chance to see them live. :)

bmack86
03-24-2010, 11:08 AM
Sorry, NEU! and Can are both impossible as founding members are both dead (Klaus Dinger in NEU! and Michael Karoli in Can). I'd love to see that, but it can't happen. Also, after having seen the last Slint tour, I highly doubt they'll play again. They didn't look like they were enjoying themselves at all. And, we've heard a few times that Pavement won't be there.

To note, I'd love to see all of these bands, but sadly they just probably won't happen.

LooseAtTheZoo
03-24-2010, 11:14 AM
It's Arcade Fire.

Icemouse
03-24-2010, 12:02 PM
I guess that would make it very difficult for them to play. Most of my Sunday entries are shots in the dark, I really can't tell what the guy wants to put on. I've mentioned elsewhere that I really hope Jim is able to make interesting lineup selections like the Lips were able to(caribou/fourtet, no age/bob mould doing husker du, etc). The pavement was an example more than anything - There is definitely room for another "headliner" act on Saturday. Slint is just a wish, especially since pajo is already there and iirc they're Barry's favorite band. there are a lot of other recently reunited bands/bands able to reunite that I'd prefer but if I had to guess none of them are as likely, even if slint is unlikely in itself

Icemouse
03-24-2010, 12:40 PM
Also you said we've heard mutiple times pavement won't be there. Have we heard they won't be there or just that they won't be curating? I've seen the latter but not the former. By no means do I care to hold my breath for them, just checking if you know something I don't.

Also re: something Jamie said many pages back "the stage would probably collapse if all 33 from spiritualized were on stage" - then put half of them on the floor! As if ATP hasn't done the impossible before

i doubt they'd ever consider a don't look back, but i might be wrong.

the real problem with the residents for me is that i think most of their music kind of sucks... it's just been done so much better by others. the convergence of styles that they are shooting for just never quite worked out for them. there are some serious gems here and there though.

Up to this point, I have thus far been satisfied watching this board and not participating though i've loved both ATP NY's/was extremely excited about this big announcement. But i have to admit that not only were these additions extremely underwhelming as compared to previous lineups but almost downright misleading in terms of the email sent regarding the necessity to buy tickets early. I'm not sure Bardo Pond or a Portishead side project is going to sway those on the fence. I'm sorry for the negative vibes here but I'm truly bummed.

I wouldn't say misleading but you are right in that those who were/are on the fence won't be swayed. BEAK> definately sounds interesting and Sunn0))) + Boris as well. But I'm still on the fence myself. The board will be quite happy with this I feel.

Thrilled to see Boris/Sunn and Bardo on the lineup, but I also have to wonder why they thought this would instantly sell the thing out (unless they're super close to sold out anyway). Feels like something big dropped off or wasn't confirmed in time ...

Regardless, I'm more excited about ATP now than I was yesterday, so I have no real complaints, personally. Does seem like a bit of a letdown overall with the way it was hyped up, though.

Don't know how to feel on this one. Not the biggest Sunn 0))) fan but I'm a huge Boris fan so I'm eager to get my hands on a copy of Altar. I feel like my brain is going to be hurting after this weekend, it's just going to have a massive assault put on this. I am definitely going to agree with everyone that this announcement was a bit underwhelming but I'm glad to see Jamie's post that the "buy buy buy" email wasn't for anyone on this announcement(because that means there are still earth-shattering lineup choices in the works! :))

also if anyone is interested, 27 acts are currently announced, last year's ATPNY had 44(inc about 4 comedy) total. In late March of last year there were 18 performers announced(The flaming lips, the drones, the feelies, animal collective, suicide, dirty three, Antipop Consortium, Atlas Sound, Autolux, Black Dice, Panda Bear, the jesus lizard, el-p, melvins, dead meadow, akron family, sleepy sun)

Anyone that hasn't been before also has to understand, there were no HOLY FUCK OMG moments in lineup releases for me last year... But by the time Aug/Sept rolls around, you look at the lineup and see all of the various components and you suddenly realize that you get to see all those bands in an incredibly intimate venue with a bunch of uber-respectful, awesome music nerds. I absolutely agree that ATP is about the totality of the lineup, not any one specific act. But when event promoters speak publicly of additions that might rapidly sell the fest out, there's bound to be some backlash when folks don't see them on the bill. Personally, I've been onboard and excited since finding out there would even be a Year 3 (ie before a single act was revealed), but I can also understand why some people are looking at today's news and scratching their heads.

schoolofruckus
03-25-2010, 08:51 AM
If I already had tickets to ATP NY and/or I weren't planning to get married two weeks after the show, I would be fucking bowled over by the "Altar" presentation. But since I don't have tickets and I am getting married in mid-September, and the only way I will even remotely consider going is a Tom Waits or Godspeed You! Black Emperor addition, I'm not swayed over to that side of the fence.

I'm with you, to an extent. But I do think it's easier to say that retrospectively (don't look back?) because the big guns (FL, AC, MBV) already tied to those shows, making the slow roll out a pleasant surprise. At this stage in the game, Sunday still lacks a satisfying headliner which is what I assume Jaime can't yet confirm. But overall, I think my concern is Saturday. Recycling past curators leaves a stale taste, especially when paired with the fact that 5 of these bands have already played ATP NY. I get the lineage piece but c'mon.

Perhaps this can all be boiled down to a severe case of Groening envy.

It's also important to note that there are people like me who are going that have never been to an ATP. So it doesn't make a difference to me if they are recycling past curators or that 5 of the bands have played ATP NY in the past. Especially the past curator part. I can sort of see where you're coming from about repeat ATP NY acts because there are fewer acts on the lineup than most festivals.

MrAmeche
03-25-2010, 09:15 AM
Regarding repeat acts, I'm totally down with seeing Boris, Bardo and Fuck Buttons again - those three have been among my favorites from the first two years. And I missed most of Wooden Shjips and Sleepy Sun, so that's cool. BJM, Tortoise, APSE repeats ... eh.

Honestly, even though Sonic Youth, the Breeders and Mudhoney are what's driving me to go anyway, I'd still go regardless of who was/was not on the lineup just because ATP is so fucking rad. End of story.

But yeah, I'll admit I'm drawing a huge blank on these additions --- not all, but some. I'm a music nerd fo' sho' --- and I'll second Jared's comment about how awesome it is to be surrounded by other total nerds for a weekend --- but my nerding falls totally outside of this spectrum. Now if this was a totally post-punk/no wave/protogrunge ATP, then we'd be talking.

So if anyone wants to suggest some albums for me to peep at by the new additions (and old, because I'm sure you can tell what I haven't listened to) I'd love it. And honestly, if it has noisy guitars and/or a really badass chick in the band, I'm sure I'll dig it. (Which is why I'm glad Boris will be there, because I missed them last year...) Not really a big Mazzy Star fan, though, so yeah.

Boris was one of my favorite sets of last year. I'm listening now to Altar for the first time, this is going to be awesome. Very excited for them and Beak>. This will be the first US Beak> show, no?

Saw Dungen at Street Scene and really liked it despite not knowing anything, glad to have time to check them out more and see them again. Same for Sleepy Sun except saw them at last years ATP.

There is also quite a few bands on the lineup so far that I've never listened to, but have heard good things about. Looking forward to discovering new stuff after Coachella.

I'm not a Tortoise expert, but It's All Around You is what got me into the band, and is fantastic. Especially the song "Dot/Eyes", which there's a good chance we'll hear in September.

And definitely listen to their older material before putting on Beacons of Ancestorship, their newest release. While still a solid record, it's certainly a departure from their usual style and isn't really representative of what the band sounds like as a whole.

I was going to say, the one reason that I can see choosing Burning Man over ATP would be if you were going with an awesome group of friends. Not that us ATPers are not awesome too, of course. But it seems like the socialization component is really at the core of what Burning Man is all about. Whereas with ATP, spending time with friends old and new is definitely a plus, but at the core it's about the music.

That listing has been on livenation.com for some record amount of time, and yeah it's for 2011. Not sure as to the reason behind the whole announce a show years in advance thing.

This will be my first year going and I'm thinking of staying in NYC for a day or two before the fest and taking ATP's bus service to Kutsher's there and back. Any recommendations on where in NYC I should stay? I'm not looking for anything first class, just a cool neighborhood with a good bar, stuff to walk to, maybe a museum around.

I live in Brooklyn Greenpoint/Williamsburg area. A group of my friends from London came to visit recently and stayed at Hotel Le Jolie and really enjoyed it.
My neighborhood is loaded with cool bars, clubs and restaurants and its just a short subway ride into Manhattan.

thanks for the info. all the reviews for that hotel seem pretty great overall. any other suggestions on the cheap will be greatly appreciated.

i happen to be a connoisseur of fine beers and was definitely gonna be stocking up on some beers that aren't available here so i can share with some friends when i get back to houston. am i gonna get into any trouble bringing anything like that into kutsher's or should i just try to get whatever i can on monday before i fly out? how's the bar at kutsher's by the way?

You're not allowed to bring your fine beers into Kutshers, but it's also not impossible to circumvent security.

The bar is useful. It's not amazing. Pricey, but pretty normal compared to festival prices. Pretty sure no drafts, just bottles poured into cups.

If you want to PM me the exact dates you plan to stay in NYC I can probably help you better. I work for a travel company doing IT stuff so one of the girls down the hall can probably tell me what is good for the lowest prices.

I'm in Greenpoint as well, right around the corner from WORD.

Other hotel options I've suggested to friends with decent results in Manhattan include The Gershwin (http://www.gershwinhotel.com/) and The Pod (http://www.thepodhotel.com/).

I need album recommendations for the following ATP NY acts:

Explosions In The Sky
The Breeders
Tortoise
The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Hope Sandoval
Bardo Pond
Dungen
Wooden Shjips
The Books

Thanks, all. Also, I'm pretty unfamilar with quite a few of the other acts, so if there's anyone you feel particularly strongly about let me know and I can give them a listen.

Explosions In The Sky - The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place
The Breeders - not very familiar
Tortoise - TNT, and then Millions Now Living Will Never Die
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request
Hope Sandoval - not familiar
Bardo Pond - Dilate or Amanita, can't go wrong with either
Dungen - Ta Det Lungt
Wooden Shjips - Dos, although the self-titled is great too
The Books - The Lemon of Pink

Very different experiences. RS sets are 15-25 minutes long and vary in quality greatly. The downstairs portion of the venue totally sucks balls.

Though... I would go if not for ATP.

Well that's interesting. There's just as many artists to get excited about here as that festival. But those set lengths are a bummer. Also looks like I wouldn't have been able to get into half of the shows last year because I'm under 21. So of course I'll still be really sad if I can't go to ATP...

wmgaretjax
04-07-2010, 02:37 PM
If it is any consolation. A similar festival will be happening in Chicago in 2011 that will probably indulge in longer sets... It's being put on by the Type Records and Digitalis label heads... Guaranteed to be incredible.

just bottles poured into cups.

PLASTIQUE BOTTLES.

I got around this by buying a case of Bud Light (one of the, what, two? beers sold at ATP) and snuck them in my purse. Looked like I was drinking beer bought there. Yay.

Swans would be rad. Let's get T.Moore to get Gira to come.

the GYBE release says "ATP UK, a handful of British and European shows and *then* 9 American towns," so my guess would be no ATP NY, since that's three months before ATP UK. But it does say "current plans," so that doesn't sound 100% locked down ... maybe if they do it slooowly ATP '11 could come into play ... ?
