And yes, March 1st is technically out of the graphic's date range, but it's still part of Noise Pop according to APE.

so expensive...

dorkfish
11-20-2009, 01:55 AM
Yeah, but it's rare when I find the Noise Pop badge to be worth it, but there will be one or two amazing lineups that you'll want to see for $12-25.

And Magnetic Fields is surprisingly expensive, too, on its own, but they're one of the few overlapping bands that my girlfriend and I are actually passionate about, so when they come to town, we have to see them.

wmgaretjax

i was referring to magnetic fields on it's own as expensive. i'm excited to see the rest of the shows. i'm sure i'll catch one of the cafe du nord gigs.

shakermaker113

most of the shows are so cheap. one year I considered buying a badge until I realized the same amount of money could get me two tickets to a show every night. and a ticket gives you garunteed entry, vs a pass which will only get you in if there is still room.

dorkfish
11-20-2009, 12:41 PM
Yup, I was denied entry to a show when I had a badge a couple years ago. Haven't bought one since.

So basically you're unwilling to take any kind of stance on the issue.

My stance is "doubt it will occur".

If it does happen, my lack of surprise will be backed up by Malkmus' solo performance last year where he played a lot of Pavement songs and Noise Pop/Another Planet's longstanding relationship with Malkmus, as well as Spiral Stairs.

I bet we will get some announcement on Sunday night during Live 105's "Soundcheck" radio show. The past couple of years the guys that run Noise Pop have been guests on the show just before they make the announcement on their website.

Lineup is coming out tomorrow. They've did a good job of keeping things unannounced:

Feb 24:
Rogue Wave @ Bottom of the Hill

Feb 27:
The Magnetic Fields @ Herbst Theatre
The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Nico Vega @ Independent

Feb 28:
Evan Dando @ Cafe Du Nord (just assuming that this is Noise Pop)

Mar 1:
The Magnetic Fields @ Fox Theater (Oakland)

but they posted that yesterday, so hopefully more will be announced today.

It has nothing to do with his quality. Unless he was heavily pushed by his booking agency, I doubt that any of the Goldenvoice talent booking people have heard of him.

Fair enough. I've seen mentions of Memory Tapes on Pitchfork and other similar sites though. However, Goldenvoice doesn't necessarily read those publications.

Kinda irritated that the Wallpaper. show is at the exact same fucking time as the Atlas Sound show. Oh well.

Oh yeah if you can, go see the Rogue Wave show to catch Man/Miracle opening for them. They're an incredible live band. Same goes for Tempo no Tempo opening for We Were Promised Jetpacks.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm planning on booking a Noise Pop related show in Santa Cruz on the 28th, jus' saying.

god, just listened to this "critically acclaimed" yoko album. these critics must post from bellevue. has anyone else listened to this...can i get a witness?

guess i'll have to pass on seeing my beloved deerhoof then. the thought of having to pay all that money to listen to yoko's death screech, coupled with her awkward, arthritic dancing just makes me ill thinking about it. dammit satomi...why, why, why do you like yoko so much (you're so much better than that).

Wow, what a mediocre way to end the festival week. Save your money and come to Santa Cruz to witness a show that'll blow that second rate Arcade Fire band straight out of the water.

What band is that? Is this your band? Maybe they are second rate Arcade Fire material, but they are fun and full of life right now. And I don't know how much I would be saving by driving to Santa Cruz. $20 for a ticket is not that steep.

Went to the Noise Pop opening party happy hour last night at Benders in the Mission. Har Mar Superstar performed and it was an open bar. All you had to do was RSVP at the Diesel store on Market and wear the t-shirt they gave you. Can't really complain... free u-call-it drinks and a disgustingly terrific Har Mar Superstar performance. Hahaha. Good times.

Looking forward to the Atlas Sound and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros shows. I'll look for the Fro on Friday night and introduce myself if I see you Passive. Pretty sure you turned up in one of my pics from Treasure Island, so I have an idea of who to look for.

Atlas Sound last night at GAMH was pretty good. If I had the choice I would prefer Deerhunter, but there were still some shining moments for the single man, his mic, guitar and loops. He was in quite the chipper mood and talked it up/joked a lot with the audience which is always fun to see.

I think the best part of the night for me was the discovery aspect. Each year I have been to Noise Pop shows I always walk away from one of nights intrigued by an opener I haven't heard much of before, last night that band was Geographer. They played a tight and solid set and a new song called 'Paris' which I thought was really catchy, at which point I was totally hooked. They announced a cd release show at the Rickshaw Stop on 3/11. I think I will be attending.

I'm considering going to check out Black Prairie tonight at the Rickshaw, anyone going to check that out or have any thoughts on them?

Looking forward to Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros tomorrow night.

We didn't get there in time to hear any of the openers at Atlas Sound last night, and I agree with you it was good--but Deerhunter would have been better. And what the heck was up with those Oakland comments? I'm glad he actually played Quarantined!

I came home from the show and listened to Four Tet's new album for the first time, a part of me wishes I had gone to that. But Bradford was still great...harmonica and all.

wmgaretjax
02-27-2010, 10:42 AM
bummer he's not playing with the valet chick and all anymore... it was better as a band compared to the two solo sets I've seen.

GeezrRckr
02-27-2010, 10:53 AM
in case i haven't said it enough in some other threads...the Four Tet show at the Indy last night was really good. he does a great job of presenting his material live (my first time) and especially so for "Love Cry." that's my favorite song of the new LP and i was so pleased to hear it live last night. just great.

shakermaker113
02-28-2010, 09:31 AM

Memory Tapes was awesome last night. Short...but sweet. I think Dayve is totally dreamy, for one. But also, there was just a lot of energy and the sound was amazing. After seeing him, I definitely do not think he should (or ever will) play at a large festival like Coachella. It really doesn't seem like it's his thing.

It's too bad I had to suffer through Loquat. I knew I recognized their name, and my boyfriend and I realized we saw them for 5 minutes at Treasure Island in '08 before we left to get food because we were so bored. Same story, I just found their sound incredibly bland and the singer is annoying.

Birds and Batteries sounded pretty good to begin with, but their last 2 songs were pretty cheesy. Something about staring in a mirror...? Oh well.

shakermaker113
02-28-2010, 09:22 PM
memory tapes was quite infectiously fun, even if short.

02-28-2010, 09:48 PM
Atlas Sound, in my opinion, is at his best when he has lots of samplers and his electric guitar and no harmonica. I saw him do a set like that right after the first album came out and it was amazing. Every other set I've seen from him (A few loop pedals and harmonica, acoustic, full band and a laptop show) was so so.

tubescape
03-01-2010, 09:52 AM
Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros was really really fun last night. The crowd, sans the fools sitting at the tables in the far back, were totally into it. Band even managed to stage a sit-down for the last song (nearly everyone in the joint was sitting on the floor). The band really brought a lot of energy into the place and seemed to be enjoying themselves and feeding off the good vibes of the crowd. While they hooked me from a distance at Treasure Island, the show last night at Bimbo's was where it was at.

I saw a few of the openers and nothing really worth mentioning except that I wish Jenny Lewis was playing with the Watson Twins :(

Thanks again Noise Pop!
