kroqken attended UCSB from 1990-1992.

I attended UCSB from 1990-1993.

And surprise, surprise, we both graduated.

I have been back there twice this year, and while a lot has changed in the past 2 decades, many things are also the same.

Strange to think about the fact that, had I gotten a girl pregnant in my first year at UCSB, my kid could be attending there right now.

Just wondering since im going there right now, in the engineering department.

I graduated in 05, and not in a paying or interesting major like Engineering or Business, rather I got a BA in Philosophy. This fact is directly correlated to the fact that I have an exciting career in Retail Food Service.

Although in my defense, I work maybe 40 hours a week, can take any vacation I want, and make enough to live alone and not be bothered by roomates or many bills. Although I work hard to ensure I have a large monthly credit card bill.

It's not the UCSB campus that is plagued with mythic proportions of STD's and general sluttiness, it's Isla Vista, the overcrowded adjacent 1 square mile town. Which is also now home to tons of city college kids who are even more crazy and destructive. But in actuality, the statistics of std's are no different than other campuses. And for the most part, UCSB's notorious events like Halloween and now Floatopia are the way they are because of all the out-of-towners that flood in and get wild. Not that I am denying in any way the partying that does incessantly go on, and which I was a part of when I was there.

Do they still collect $10 (or more) for a "parking pass" for Santa Ynez, and then just essentially pocket it and not control the lot?

When I lived there in 1992-1993, people from outside of the complex were parking there, and the parking pass was meaningless. I came home at 3am in the cold rain one night, and there were ZERO spots available in the whole lot. I finally parked in a non-spot (but not blocking anything or causing a hazard), and the assholes at parking services ticketed me.

I complained to Santa Ynez's office, and they told me to fuck off. At the same time, they admitted that they hadn't patrolled the lot and that there was "a problem" with unauthorized parking there. Still, they would not ask parking services to tear up my ticket!

I appealed it and lost.

It finally took my dad (who was at the time an executive at a big company) calling the Chancellor's office, and threatening to have the company completely cut off donations to UCSB if they wouldn't void the ticket. They backed down at that point and erased it.

Nobody ever gave rationale as to why I deserved that ticket, especially given that I only got it because they failed to patrol their own lot for months.

Sweet. More Mexican food in IV.

Isla Vista’s newest Mexican food joint, Chino’s Rock & Tacos, opened its doors Saturday.

The new Pardall Road eatery boasts a 22-person patio, low prices and free chips and salsa. Owner Javier Cadena said he combined knowledge from his family’s roots in the restaurant industry with his love of music to form Chino’s unique atmosphere.

“We try to create the best of both worlds, fast service with the feeling that you’re still dining out,” Cadena said. “The energy in our place is undeniable and the service goes beyond the counters.”

Customers at Chino’s order food at a counter before sitting down at a table to eat, something Cadena noted is an aspect that most eateries in I.V. lack. Complementary chips and salsa and the presence of a server are other elements of Chino’s customer service, he said.

“I wanted to bring Mexican food back to reality,” he said. “So many restaurants lack the atmosphere no matter how good the food is. Here, when people walk in they feel the energy, taste the food and walk out with a few dollars in their pockets.”

Keeshia Paradise, a third-year business economics major, said she was intrigued by the new restaurant after dining at the State Street location.

“It’s definitely a great restaurant for our age group,” Paradise said. “It’s cheap and the atmosphere is great.”

Chino’s also offers special deals such as $1 Taco Tuesdays and BRC Wednesdays, which include $2 bean, rice and cheese burritos and $1 beers.

“When you pay $12 for a burrito and a soda, you leave saying ‘ouch,’ but with our prices and our healthier alternatives, you don’t get that heavy, greasy feeling, nor do you pay an arm and a leg,” Cadena said.

Third-year philosophy major Armando Guerrero agreed that the prices were a perk of the restaurant.

“It’s cheap and it’s good — that always makes for a good combo,” Guerro said.

In addition to being concerned about costs to students, Cadena said Chino’s is concerned about costs to the environment. Chino’s utilizes “green” methods such as less wasteful packaging and water conservation in the kitchen. The eatery has also designated every Monday night as a fundraiser for community organizations.

“We want to help out with the issues people care about,” Cadena said. “If our community helps us succeed, why not give back?”

Although there are already a huge number of restaurants in the area, Grant Robertson — owner of the recently established Dogtown — said there is enough variety in I.V. that competition will not be a factor.

“I don’t see it as competitive,” Robertson said. “I have been counting down the days until they open up, and I only see it as beneficial for our corner. If you are unique and bring something to the community that doesn’t have an outlet, then you can succeed.”

Despite the number of other Mexican dining choices, students such as Guerrero said they are enthusiastic about the new option.

“It makes a nice alternative to Freebirds and other Mexican restaurants around here,” Guerro said.

I'm currently boycotting UCSB because they called me one night after 11 PM last week to ask me to donate to the alumni fund. At least one person on their staff needs to be schooled in the basics of time zones.

I'm a Gaucho! Class of 2015. I got drunk 4 times in 2 days during Deltopia last weekend. I thought that would make all of you proud.

Here's a picture of sunset from Dog Shit Park that I took with my phone. I try to get out there for sunset at least 2-3 times a week. It's the best stress reliever out there.

Javan's had the best burgers and Deja Vu had the best fries, and Sam's still has the best subs. The owner stills knows me when I go back 11 years later. That kid (his son) who was like 7 working behind the counter making subs avoiding every child labor law is still working there and attending UCSB. Kid is now pimp.

Javan's had the best california club sandwhiches. Sadly, they closed a couple of weeks ago. The casualty list in the last few years includes: Chino's, Javan's, Steak and Hogie, Isla Vista Surf Shop, Dog Town and On the Side :(

Now there's a 7/11 and Pizza My Heart in town.

In a thread of a bunch of supposed Gauchos, how has noone corrected the OP? Floatilla? Either I'm old, or perhaps relatively young, but during my years that shit was called Floatopia. And then got banned and turned into Deltopia. Etc. Never Floatilla.

But looking at recent posts... really? There's a 7-11 in IV now?

I hope El Sitio is still around. That place is the bees knees. Best sober burrito in IV.

I went to Floatopia from 2005-07, and then in '08 it became that massive shit show.

This idiot I knew fell down the bluffs in 08 and broke both of his legs.

Sadly, Javans closed about a month ago. I live right next to it. The best places nowadays are Cucas, Southcoast Deli, Sams to-go, and Giovanni's. If you're looking for a bomb breakfast burrito, go to the Cantina. It's out of this world incredible

'10!

Lived on DP for a year...a bit bro central but it was great. Probably lost a solid 10 lbs just not being walking distance from freebirds/any mexican place.

I'll be going for alumni weekend this year, 4sure.

So, I visited my UCSB friends for Halloween about a decade ago... was Freebirds not a nationally established chain at that time? I mean, it's good and all... but it seems to have earned a legendary status amongst people that live there.

The Freebirds in Isla Vista is a different restaurant than the national chain.

PS I was glad to see the Cantina was still in operation with their delicious breakfast burritos when I went and saw Sigur Ros at the bowl earlier this year. I can't believe a Pizza My Heart is there now. Sorry to hear about Javan's closing -- if IV Deli Mart is still open that place used to be my go to sandwich shop.

Ah, that makes sense. Couldn't imagine a line down the block for a chain.

Yeah. Freebirds in IV is still overhyped. Though *I was there* before they accepted debit/credit cards, before they served beer, when a burrito was still $5.

I have never bought a beer at Freebirds. I figured by the time i get there, I wouldnt need any more to drink.

IV was such a bubble, I rarely ever left that place during school. Unless it was for a $50 cab ride to get downtown on Thursdays.

You considered that living on DP for one year "too far" to walk to Freebirds, despite IV being pretty much 1 square mile, and you didn't even bother taking Bills Bus downtown?

Heh. I just always got too drunk at Gio's all day Thursday happy hours to walk to the Bill's Bus stop, so I'm not really one to talk.

How often has someone yelled out before heading out "67 block DP GUYS" and everyone turns around and says "uhh thats like 10 minutes away. Lets just drink this Heritage here instead."

And I would get those 10-person vans for downtown. I ain't on no bus schedule.

Gio's spa-fuggin-getti wednesday special is unbeatable. 5 buckaroos for a large bowl of spaghetti. Pizza my heart is good but its so expensive compared to the other pizza joints in IV

I remember the first time i was in IV was for halloween like 8 years ago. couches being lit on fire and a car being flipped over within 30 minutes of being there. it was pretty fun.

Oh IV. So many memories there.

Halloween was always ridiculous. When you see a guy dressed up as Tyrone Biggums (Dave Chapelle's crackhead character) actually being arrested it just makes the night.
