There's lots of music, some of it is even good music, but the only things you see is what people haul in. So the music you will see and hear, is the music that people carry in...so DJ's on RV's, Stoners with Guitars, a dude tripping on acid playing a keyboard...
etc.

Uhh, isn't this in northern Nevada? Where it's pretty damn cold at night? Unless they changed the location. My friend went 10 years ago, and definitely had to wear a sweater at night, and it's so fucking windy they have a fence to catch all the shit that blows away.

you seem to have looked right past the thing i was talking about, DAY TIME! I could care less how cold it is at night because i don't hate cold, i hate heat, that stuff the sun causes which is only out durring the day. The one good thing about your post here is that you let me know that it's windy as hell, which is something else i wouldn't want to deal with in the middle of the desert.

TONS of people don't have a good time there. They either don't anticipate the heat (and cold at night) or don't bring the right gear/food, or just plain get sick of it (although the latter is rare because these are generally type of people that just show up the last couple days and treat burning man like a frat party anyway)

I'm not trying to discourage others from the experience (although I would try to discourage those that think this is a music festival. People getting excited over that "lineup" that someone posted is bad news and will give people the wrong impression). My main point is that the presale thing is complete bullshit. But by all means go to burning man, and buy your tickets presale. Show up with a couple gallons of water and a dozen hits of E and go nuts.
If you're going for the first time just be sure to READ THE GUIDE if you don't have someone with you that's been before. Also if you haven't been before be prepared to spend well over a grand +whatever drugs you think you'll need. There is absolutely nothing but coffee and ice that you can buy up there.

Fair Enough, I'll accept this.
There are only 2 camps that bring in big name DJs and for many burners this is a huge no-no. It draws the people with the wrong idea. Granted that it can be a mind blowing experience to stroll by Opulent Temple and see infected mushroom playing in that atmosphere, but big names are not the point. If you spent your time dashing from one spot on the playa over to another every night trying to catch some name you've heard a million times then (and I guarantee you'll fail if you try) you'd be missing the rest of experience. It's an art festival no matter what some people say about it being a big rave. The accusations of it being a rave are spawned by people seeing scenes of those huge camps filled with rich kids. Thousands of people spend their entire year working on projects for no other reason than to contribute something mindblowing. You add in a bunch of ravers wearing glowsticks who just came to see fucking Tiesto and do nothing but crowd and fuck up your art car, or push in behind you while you're trying to enjoy music or something, and it discourages people who do contribute. Lots of camps these days are even breaking down a day or two early because Friday and saturday night are unbearable.
grumble grumble yeah I know. But once you see the extreme effort and expense people put into it you'll realize.
It's not a fucking music festival. If you just want to do drugs and listen to the big name DJs then just do that in a proper club MUCH easier.

maybe if you're setting up your own camp or need to bring the luxuries of home because you can't rough it.. Michele went with nothing, came back with more than she could carry and didn't spend a dime.. (i will admit that she's an exception)
everything there works on the barter system, so i'd say you don't need to spend anything once you leave home, provided you bring the right clothing and lots of water..

No. this is the biggest misconception about burning man. Do NOT go up there thinking it's a "barter system". If anything they'll describe it as a "gift economy" but do not under any circumstances go up there without everything you'll need and expect others to take care of you (that is unless you're part of a larger camp and it IS someone's specific job to cook or shade you or whatever). It's called radical self-reliance (read the guide). This is not a fucking hippie festival where you should expect to freeload off of everyone else's effort and resources. If you run into or are camped near random people that offer you food or other things then great. That shit happens all the time, but it's not a fucking barter system. Anyone who's been there and has the balls to say that is an idiot.
You may think you can bring your little backpacking tent and some fucking trader joes dried food but you will be miserable. Your tent should be LARGE and it MUST be shaded. Don't expect to be able to sleep after dawn unless these conditions are met. And you can laugh at some of the folks who bring luxuries but once you get there you'll realize that's the fucking point for some. burning man is not about "roughing it" or proving how tough you are. Producing surreal shit in the desert is the point. You need to spend effort lighting your camp so that you don't kill yourself on someone's guy line or rebar, etc. etc. This is not like regular camping. Don't bring healthy boring food because you wont want to eat it. Bring shit that's tasty because when you're strung out or your normal rhythms are off you won't want to keep eating. This shit all costs money. You may happen to know someone that floated through the experience with no effort, but for every one of those there are a dozen responsible people who create an environment where that person can survive.

And any of you going I highly recommend you hook up with a group that has been before and knows what they're doing. Having an experienced guide will make all the difference.
I made the decision that Burning Man is going to my my festival this year. There are some things about it that are really appealing to me. The idea of the gift economy is something that I've read about - not pertaining to Burning Man per se, but in general.
I just got offered to camp with one of the BIG theme camps this year. I'm mulling it over. I will probably accept their offer. The people from this camp that I've talked to are all genuinely nice people.
I'm going to begin constructing my hexayurt for my shelter. I've already started thinking about operating a 'soup kitchen' a couple of nights for anyone who wants some until it's gone. My 18 quart soup pot could feed a bunch of people, I think. Since I'm not an artist, this is one way that I can participate. Help with participation is another reason I'm thinking I'll camp with this group. They've been running the camp for a few years now and are all pretty seasoned Burners. They'll help me along my preparation and the mental taxation of radical self reliance, since I've never gone before.

There's lots of music, some of it is even good music, but the only things you see is what people haul in. So the music you will see and hear, is the music that people carry in...so DJ's on RV's, Stoners with Guitars, a dude tripping on acid playing a keyboard...
etc.
There are enormous sound systems that rival systems at some of the music festivals. Opulent Temple, Root Society, Do Lab and Nexus bring enormous sound systems and have world class DJ's spinning everynight. Last year names like; Freq Nasty, Bassnectar, Carl Cox, DJ Dan and one of the guys from Thievery Corp were just some of the names on the playa.

There are more than just 2 camps that bring in big name DJ's. I can think of at least 5 right off of the top of my head. I have been going since 1997.

Those of us veterans call people like Michelle, "Sparkle Ponies". People with experience do spend well over $1000 on supplies. Why? Because you are supposed to give back to the community, not just take from it.

First year going. Bought the plane ticket into SF yesterday. Going with a good crew who are friends with the guys in Opulent Temple actually, so I am pretty stoked. Looking forward to being a part of this experience this year and doing what I can to get involved. Kinda hard to bring everything I would like all the way from Chicago since I'm flying so I am a little nervous about that. Any more tips for the virgin would be great.

I'm not trying to discourage others from the experience (although I would try to discourage those that think this is a music festival.
Good stuff. I haven't been but the last thing I want is for people to go to this thinking its gonna be a rave or something of that sort. Its not a music festival, its a festival with music (kinda like LiB). People need to understand the difference between the two.

Congratulations. But there are still only 2 camps that bring in big name DJ's. The rest simply book them to play once OT and Roots Society bring them. There may be a onesy twosy exception here and there but by and large you know this is the case.
Just try to think of a list of the bigtime DJ over the last half-dozen years and it'll be pretty obvious. I'm not talking about 1997.
And people like Lorin and Freq Nasty don't count.

Do people seriously come out to Burning Man for BIG name DJ's? Like Tiesto and Armin? You'd think the crowd that shows up to this would be more into the smaller names like Bassnectar and Random Rab (at least from what I've heard, and the podcast). But whatever. Can't wait. 2011 is my year.

People (generally) don't come out specifically to see big name DJ's. Everyone would like it to stay that way is the point.
Bassnectar's still the biggest deal at BM though. His shows out there have become kinda unbearable the past couple years actually. But hopefully he's reached a dynamic where he's so sick of the poppy dubstep mashup crap he tours with and plays some old school shit this year.

i'll be at Flattery Camp! which will be around Edinburgh & 3:00, so actually not too far away from kingsblend.. I don't know if we'll have any huge beacons or anything but if you're around E & 3 you should probably see a Flattery Camp sign.. though I think I'll probably just come to Bell Camp sometime in the early afternoon on Tuesday since it will probably be easier to find, and then maybe coordinate from there. I believe the hotdog party should go from mid afternoon to evening time, so if you guys came by anytime from 5 till 9 you'll most likely get your fair share of weeners and beer =] do you know where you're camping darryl?

Congratulations. But there are still only 2 camps that bring in big name DJ's. The rest simply book them to play once OT and Roots Society bring them. There may be a onesy twosy exception here and there but by and large you know this is the case.
Just try to think of a list of the bigtime DJ over the last half-dozen years and it'll be pretty obvious. I'm not talking about 1997.
And people like Lorin and Freq Nasty don't count.
Now your point is just about semantics. What you believe to be big name dj's perhaps someone else does not. Why you say that Freq Nasty and Bassnectar don't count is beyond me. I guess Bassnectar's appearance before the Coachella masses doesn't constitute him being a "big name" dj to you. You say tomato, I say tomahto. Agree to disagree.

Burning Man is the biggest collection of freaks, outcasts, sluts, and drug addicts that could ever possibly be assembled.
I know I'm not exactly telling anyone anything new here, but damnit, you couldn't pay me enough to spend a week there.
And can you imagine what the average attendee smells like when the week is over?
They should force terror detainees to go down on Burning Man chicks at the end of the festival if they don't tell us what we need to know. That might qualify as torture, but I'd be surprised if that didn't instantly solve our homeland security problems.

That's exactly what you want. Something with a vent, yet small enough to carry around in your small backpack so you have with you at all times. a pair of clear goggles is also potentially key. Most people only bring tinted ones.

They did step up, but to be honest I liked their more modest setup last year. This year they had the same dome, but a massive playground/jungle gym stuff going on outside. It was almost too huge. The pyrosphere was definitely awesome. The tesla coil never made it on.
I didn't see a whole lot of music there but I did catch lorin, opiuo, and ill-gates (that I can remember).
During lorin's set there was some dude passed out by the door to the dome and a friend of mine stopped to help him out and fetch a ranger. He fucking died in her arms. kind of a downer.

Oh shit that phone booth was nuts! On Wednesday night we were walking around the playa and I saw this guy talking on it and I thought he was talking to himself and so I grabbed it and I was like "Hello? Hello?" then I passed it back to him and said "It's for you. It's the future calling." Then he says "No there really is someone on the other line" and I put the phone up to my ear and this girl goes "Hello?" and I gave the phone back to him. Then we turned around to walk away and we saw the other phone booth about 100 feet away and went over to it so I could wait my turn to talk. Then when it was my turn I got on it and it was the girl on the other line and our conversation went something like this:
Me: Hi.
Her: Hi.
Me: I'm from the future. I'm here to tell you that you are dirty but you will be clean soon.
Her: Giggle.
Me. I see yooooouu.
Her: I see you too.
Me: You're a dirty girl aren't you?
Her: I am.
Me: You like being dirty don't you?
Her: Yes.
Me: (laughing uncontrollably) Okay I have to go.

I wasn't going to say anything but since you spilled the beans....yes the sunrise and sunset (but especially the sunrise) is unlike anything I have ever seen. And that is all I will say because it is something you can only experience. :D

how was the opulent temple?
It was alright. They had a decent setup. I didn't care for the music so much except for their sunrise sets. They have the second best spot on the playa for that.

And how many times, exactly, have you been? You don't need to answer that. Just do me a favor and keep telling people that, because we don't want people like you (and those foolish enough to believe you) tainting the beauty of that which is the Playa.

I am going to have to make some very hard calls next year, and skip a ton of amazing shows and parties.
I have a feeling Coachella+***********+Burning Man will be my plan.

A Hug is a Handshake out on The Playa and it doesn't take long to get used to it. Although, I'd say that 85% of people on these boards would not enjoy Burning Man. Maybe they could do it for 3 days or so but to do a full week out there is pretty rough. I for one thought it was unbelievable and thought it was an amazing planet to live on for 7 days. The artwork is beyond words, the camps that some of these people build is out of this world and the love and interaction amongst one another is like something I never felt before.
Roots Society's set-up was pretty insane and I saw a few good DJ's over there but I'm not really sure of their names. I actually thought Crystal Method were fantastic though. The crowd was massive and it looked like everyone there was having a blast. i know I was. Opulent Temple had either amazing nights or just plain shitty nights. Tuesday night was pure gold. Myagi pulled out a remix of Arcade Fire's "Rebellion (Lies)" which pretty much stole my soul from my body and hurled it into the Sun. Absolutely epic. Gives me chills just thinking about it. Aphrodite, Cosmic Selector, Jonboy, TekFreaks, Bunny of Rabbit in The Moon all killed too.
There was a very intimidating Police presence though all over the festival which brought paranoia levels to their peak. 3-4 huge cops with guns just creeping up behind you when you are dancing your ass off can be quite scary. Weed is the #1 cause of arrest on The Playa. They have dogs sniffing out for it and if they smell it coming from your direction, you were screwed. I saw one girl being carried through the crowd in cuffs just looking miserable and 4 cops were following her out. Holding in a hitter while witnessing this almost gave me a heart attack. From then on out it was to the port o potties if I wanted any green. Also, there were cops in SUV's parked in the distance, barely noticeable in the dark with inferred cameras watching people. Not fun.
Although I had an amazing experience and plan on going back again (hopefully sooner than later) I do feel unfulfilled though and wish I did more. I wish I did more exploring on my own and I wish I checked out some smaller camps. I wish I talked to more strangers and broke free of my group a bit. This has nothing to do with Burning Man as much as it does with what I did/did not put into it. I learned quite a bit of what I need to do next time. Seriously people, there is no other place out there that even compares to Burning Man. If you can do it... go.

As a total cynic in daily life, I've thought a lot (and had some encouragement from friends who do BM) about whether or not it would be a good experience for me-- a week to really work on letting go of the usual trivialities that I am so cynical about, committing to participating in a community, finding beauty in myself and others, all that. That's not to say I'm not already very interested in going because of the art and the music, I just wonder if I'd be able to fully commit to the communal/individual project. My friends who go are positive people to begin with.

The cops did seem very obtrusive this year although the stats didn't really bear out the assertion that it was far worse than previous years. 2008 was way worse, we saw whole groups of peopel being written up on the wings. I think the difference was they were making a big show of it. A guy I know was held for almost a half hour with his hand twisted behind his back. But 10 minutes later, a $500 ticket, and a few confiscated drugs later and he was back to partying. BM is simply a money making opportunity for the local cops and feds.
BTW the rumor was that there was a bar car out there called "Uncle Sam's Saloon", which was run by undercover cops, out there with the intention of drawing in and trapping drug users. A convenient way to create a bright yet comfortable spot for people to let their guard down. If that was true then I hope they put more money into it than they netted in tickets.

you dont to push yourself to commit to anything big or doing a lot of work. Just go and have fun. In future years the desire would probably come naturally to you.
It's really hard to have a bad time out there. There may be moments of exhaustion and slight dispair, thinking you're over it and don't want to deal with it anymore, but a simple rest or a leisurely walk around recharges you.
Plus, seriously, wouldn't it be a relief to no longer have to be irritated by the constant jabber about this fucking burning man thing without really knowing what they're talking about?

This is really important. Your more experienced buddies will have all kind of people they need to reunite with and their own group politics and whatever other BS and they aren't going to throw the brakes on their burn to be your caddy for the week. Don't waste your time following them around.
Some good spots to just talk to people were the 4:30 Pagoda (loved this spot), the more tricked-out bars along Esplanade, the Skinny Kitty Teahouse, and even Center Camp late at night. I'm sure others have even better suggestions.

I'm tempted to plan on going next year based on this thread and the one in the Other Festivals section. I would imagine i would have an amazing time, I just have heard from people i probably would not dig the police presence. I'm not a blow it or anything doing everything in the open thinking it's cool or anything, just have a deep rooted hatred for authority because of some life choices i have made. Maybe this would be the place to rid myself of such things and broaden my horizons in many other ways. The heat and sand is also something that turns me away from this adventure. I have to put some serious thought into whether i should go or not and have some conversations with people that went this year for the first time and draw my conclusion from that. I've always had an appreciation for the art and everything i see and do feel the experience would humble me, but i also have had my doubts. Many things to consider.
I posted this in the other thread but i think the conversation at the moment here is a better place to post it, i'm in kind of the same boat as you Guedita.

Prime example of what scares me, I would just bring edibles if weed was that much of a need but I love other things way more that I would rather be safe doing without worrying about the sent of things with me.

...and this cracked me up.
"The history of our time calls to mind those Walt Disney characters who rush madly over the edge of a cliff without seeing it: the power of their imagination keeps them suspended in mid-air, but as soon as they look down and see where they are, they fall.*"

Just before the man burned I was rudely bumped hard by someone behind me and turned to see this kid push me as he ran by with a ranger right behind him. He tackled the kid and got him on the ground. I saw him asking him what was in his pocket and he pulled something out in a baggie and cuffed him and hauled him away. It was very sobering. Then we watched the man burn and had the biggest party ever.
Also I feel the same way you do about doing more. We had a pretty good camp so it was easy to not go out exploring. I wish I had spent more time at the temple but I'm happy with what I found out there. Something so special to me that none of that matters as much.

when you get back you'll realize this was a silly statement. Not that your bike isn't well lit, but it's kind of a crapshoot in a sea of well lit bikes.
Actually my bike was so well lit that some girl complimented me on it and said she had seen me riding around a couple nights earlier. Take that! :)
