Russia is awesome. I was there in the summer of 2004, but only have some really bad photos of the trip. I took the trans-siberian railway from Beijing through Ulaan Batar to Lake Baikal and then on to Moscow and then St. Petersburg, so most of my photos look like this:

http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4d933b3127cce9f1f3e2c390e00000026108CasWTZw2ZO

This is one of the houses that Dostoyevsky was exiled to (in Omsk, I think?):

And here's the requisite tourist shot of the Red Square, only as you can see the weather was not cooperating that day:

Briefly, I was there for two weeks in August, 2000. One week in St. Petersburg. One week in Moscow.

We met several people that had done the Beijing-St. Petersburg Trans Siberian railroad trip.

More to come.

Edit: My pictures weren't very good, but I'll try and track them down.

I have yet to meet an Armenian that doesn't look obviously Armenian to me. I used to live in Glendale, maybe I've just had a lot of practice. Slavic-looking Armenians are EXTREMELY rare. Their race did start out with that basic genetic material, but there are like none left. I've seen maybe 2 out of a million, and those two still looked plenty Armenian to me.

It's a good thing if you don't need a lot of money to be happy. Life wasn't exactly luxurious, but you could depend on always having job, a place to live, medical care, enough money to get by no matter who you were. A lot of people liked their jobs, everyone lived in close, caring communities, schools kicked ass, and almost everyone had the opportunity, and money to vacation in other countries. I dunno, I think having less money is worth that kind of security. Most people who lived there agree.

The gulags, and breadlines were a bit before my time, but the KGB was a bit of a pain in the ass.

that is, you could depend on those things before the government collapsed. And the government collapsed because of years of pursuing unsustainable economic policies -- including giving everyone a job, a place to live, and medical care.

anyway, you are the one who started with the politics first with your 'socialism kicked ass' (oh! there it is again!) statement. Do you have any idea how many times I've discussed this topic with others exactly like yourself? I don't want to amuse you, and I don't need to impress you. I don't really care if you agree.

As far as me using the word "ass" so often- it's because I have a secret love affair with my own. I look at it in the mirror every opportunity I get. It makes me happy. It's imprinted in my brain.

Now if you'd stop trying to insult me, I'd really appreciate it.

My sister and I made the same exact trip in the summer of 2005. It's technically the Trans-Mongolian railway the way we went but I won't tell anyone. Besides the main cities, we also spent some time in Irkutsk, Olkhon Island, and the Golden Ring. And, get this, the two people who shared our "room" in the train from Beijing to Ulan Bator were these two guys from California who we had seen at the Rilo Kiley set at Coachella a couple months earlier. One of them brought back a wife with him from Mongolia, after spending like a month there. I'm not even kidding.

Hey, maybe they check the boards...

Come on, those Russian women on http://www.loveme.com are so hot. They even like older and less attractive American women. I wonder if they just want a green card or if they marry for love?

Most of them get to know the guy before they get married, so it depends on the girl, some of them don't care, some of them do. Two girls in my family got married through mail orders, and they have both been married for years. They have a ton of kids, and are very happy with their spouces.

At least some people find bliss. Being single blows, especially being heartbroken.
