It's not really that expensive, Salah, considering how much more you can spend on the expensive frames and glass. And yes, my name is Micah. Nice to meet you too. Did you ever get to see MOF when they were touring?

Sadly no. Atlanta was the nearest stop and its exactly a hop and a skip away. I decided that I just couldnt spend the $$ on ticket, gas, drugs, food. As much as I wanted to.

Over at inforoo they're all saying:

DMB (makes sense because they haven't played since 05, and they were great then)
KOL (as a subheadliner, whatever)
Stevie Wonder (this has me excited)

Oh and another one I forgot, Further is supposedly going to headline. Yes, Further. You're probably thinking "who in the fuck is that?" It's basically what The Dead call themselves now. I could definitely see them closing out Sunday if MMJ doesn't. Oh and MMJ is most definitely a jamband. There is no argument. I can't possibly see how anyone can see them live (a full set, not the measly one hour or so they got at coachella 08) and think otherwise.

Sunday festival closers:
05 - Widespread Panic
06 - Phil Lesh and Friends
07 - Widespread Panic
08 - Widespread Panic
09 - Phish

I love how they do this. They keep the tradition of closing with a jamband every year to remind everyone of their roots. The last 15 minutes of Widespread Panic in 05 was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in my life, they had about 40,000 people dancing into a fucking FRENZY. Phil and friends in 06 was cool for two reasons, I finally got to hear Shakedown Street live and it rained during Box of Rain.

Furthur is really just Phil and Bobby.

Which is really all that's left who helped defined the band. While I love Mickey and Bill's drumming, it's not exactly a distinctive part of their sound. Bobby really needs to stop trying to sing. Have you heard the Rothbury bootleg? Fucking awful. String Cheese Incident, on the other hand, was phenomenal at Rothbury. That break was just what they needed. I wouldn't be surprised if they're at roo next year.

The latenight conflicts in 07 were so brutal, SCI/Superjam/STS9 on friday and Flaming Lips/Gov't Mule/Galactic/Sasha and Digweed on saturday. I'm glad I went with Gov't Mule because John Paul Jones came out and played No Quarter with them (the best Led Zepplin song.) How'd they manage to fuck up so bad last year. Piss poor late nights (besides NIN) and no Superjam ... wtf?

Before Bonnaroo, I didn't really like Girl Talk. I remember in 07 when I was researching bands, I didn't even listen to one full song on his myspace before skipping. I tried listening to him a few times since them... and I guess its not really my thing. However, at Bonnaroo I decided I might as well give him a chance because I had a decent spot already and I heard he was fun live. And he sure was. I really enjoyed his set. The energy of the crowd was amazing. The music was meh, but the atmosphere and the energy was awesome. Girl Talk looks like he has A LOT of fun up on stage, I love seeing performers enjoy their work live. Like I said, the music wasn't very memorable, but the experience of the show was. I left the set with a big dumb smile on my face. Then I got to Paul Oakenfold... ugh.

I will say that Sasha and Digweed playing until the sun came up in 07 was pretty awesome. Relaxing to some trance in the back of the tent after a mind blowing Gov't Mule was perfect. They should have an electronic act do that every Saturday night/morning of roo.

I'm waiting for the lineup, and other variables, before I buy my ticket. And it's not being elitist, it just is what it is. Girl Talk sucks and I've seen it for myself. No shit? What a crock. The first time I listened to Girl Talk, I was all like 'this is pretty catchy but he's just playing the best parts of every song'. I mean, how hard is that. I thought the talent of a DJ was to play music that will get you to dance by using samples that weren't obvoius or you know, killer beats. I still decided to check him out at Coachella but I only lasted about 3 minutes before I felt the whole thing was ridiculous and cheezy. I can understand how it can be fun in a house party kinda way though.

I've never heard of The Radiolarians. Anything to do with The Radiators? They're a great jam band. Scofield has been touring and recording with MMW for a while now, they just need to come up with a fucking name for the band.

Along with the Superjam they also need to bring back the Masquerade Ball. 06 may have been the only year they did it but it was awesome. They only let people in that were wearing costumes. My neighbors helped me throw some stuff together and I got in. The band playing had masks on the whole time so you didn't know who they were. I thought they would take them off at the end but they never did. I'm sure Les Claypool was the bassist because he was tall, skinny, and damn good. He has a distinct style too. Still not sure about any of the others but they were all great. They keep crap like the silent disco and xbox tent but they need to bring back the really fun stuff.

Yea there are a lack of rumors for Bonnaroo right now. Simon and Garfunkel isn't really a rumor, someone brought it up on Inforoo and we're just kind of talking about it. Pixies supposedly have a date in Israel June 9th so they seem unlikely. Mew is a possibility because they posted something to their myspace that they signed on for 3 music festivals but it was very vague. Haven't heard about Smoky Robinson though.

Awww I wish Edward was planning to go to Roo. Stupid Glastonbury. Mark - are you going to Glasto? I can't keep up with all my friend's festival schedules...

Micah, I don't get it.

Hi Lilia, first of all Ireland was very cold but I can tolerate cold and the day I went to the Cliffs of Moher it was actually beautiful weather that day.

I'm undecided about Glastonbury. I know i'm going to Coachella and Sasquatch. I'm considering some of the smaller European festivals this summer/fall. I'm not sure which one's yet, but Pukkelpop, Rock En Seine and a couple of others. Glastonbury is looking less likely as i'm more interested in a smaller fest, good music and possibly a country I have yet to visit. I will probably make up my mind by March or so.

We'll just chalk it up to me being a pussy for now. I don't have much desire to slop around in mud with 150K people, take shits in a hole and spend a fortune to eat shitty food and another grand or more just to get there. I can survive without the showering but the rest of the picture you painted sounded miserable to me. We'll see if I can put on my big boy pants and change my mind but so far I ain't doing it for U2, The rolling stones or Pearl Jam. I at least still have the option since my desposit is down though and I haven't ruled it out 100%. It's just looking less likely when I can spend that money on airfare and go to a country I haven't seen before with a smaller festival that is less of a chore.

Yeah, I just tossed that in for some random reason. The people I met at Sasquatch this year were raving to me about Glasto before any of this and how unique and awesome it was. Something about one of the restaurants had waiters on stilts walk over and deliver you chocolate covered strawberries. It sounded like something out of Alice in Wonderland.

Comic con would be sweet. I just don't know when we would meet up. My brothers usually go and they're gone each day from way before I wake up till close to midnight. I don't usually attend but it's downtown so I'm sure we could find something to do. Maybe even something super nerdy dealing with the convention. Last year my brother got invited to a roller skating party by Seth Green. Ooh, fun.

Yes. Comic Con, not Movie and TV Con. It's understandable for sci-fi/fantasy dork stuff, but it seems to overshadow the comic element nowadays. I heard that all the teen girls camped through all the other panels of the day to be there for Twilight and fans of those panels had to miss out. Although I have to admit, I was bummed about missing that Kristin Kreuk signing last year.

Hahaha, Gwar is the first official confirmation. One of the band members spilled the beans on a Sirius radio show. I love how this lineup will come as a complete surprise to us. Other than Gwar now we really have no idea. We can assume the givens like MMJ and WP but still only one solid confirmation. Gov't Mule is the best jamband in the world right now. They really need to bring them back. Last year they had a shitty timeslot against Wilco, Of Montreal and some other good stuff. I downloaded their NYE show from a couple nights ago and it was downright insane. Warren is one of the top ten greatest guitarists alive, maybe ever. Please bring them back.

10. Phish - Big Cypress - 01/01/00

9. Phil Lesh and Friends - Oakland, CA - 12/91/00

8. The Concert for NYC - MSG - 10/21/01

7. Widespread Panic - 4/28/02

6. The First Bonnaroo - 6/21/02 - 6/23/02

5. Gov't Mule - New Orleans - 5/23/03

4. New Orleans Jazz Fest, post hurricane year

3. Daft Punk - Coachella 06

2. Radiohead - Bonnaroo 06

1. My Morning Jacket - San Fran - 12/31/06

Guns N' Roses do appear to be planning a N. America tour. I came across a date in my phone for July 10th in Phoenix. My phone searches national and international and lists all of the Canada and S. America dates but oddly enough it only lists the Phoenix date and no other US dates as the tour hasn't been announced yet. Sebastian Bach will be opening.

I guess we'll see if Bonnaroo takes a chance on them soon enough.

Lets talk about Kanye. Did that incident hurt Bonnaroo? Did it hurt Kanye? Nope. Both seem to be thriving, even after Kanye's silly award moment this year. What did Kanye do actually? Wasn't an hour of Kanye's delay due to Pearl Jam playing longer than expected and then Kanye was to blame for the other 45 minutes because he wanted to wait for the other stages to go silent?

Big deal. My GnR request is a wish list. Nothing more, nothing less.

My point is, I don't see festivals disqualifying artists or not inviting them based on them acting like Diva's or being fuck ups. Our beloved Paul T. didn't have a problem putting Amy Winhouses name on the poster last year after all that she has done and even after ditching out on her autograph session because she was trashed the last time she played Coachella.

People see Guns N' Roses on the poster and they know there is a chance for some rock star bullshit.

Yes and yes, moreso Kanye because almost everyone realized it was his fault. Of course they're both still thriving. They're both gigantic and in their prime. Kanye fans were not happy at all. This wasn't anything career damaging but it still hurt them.

I wasn't there. The stories I have read say Pearl Jam went over their set time by an hour. He has a pretty elaborate stage set up. I only know what I have read so if the delay was more than 1:45 minutes, how long was it?

I also don't follow how you can say yes and yes to the the question about it hurting Kanye or Bonnaroo when you have nothing to support that argument. Kanye's tour didn't suffer, his music sales didn't suffer, Bonnaroo's ticket sales didn't suffer or at least not in some way you can prove.

He has a pretty elaborate stage set up.

No he didn't. It was just a couple paper mache rocks. This was in the middle of the Glow in the Dark Tour and everyone who saw the actual tour said the stage set up was extremely disappointing. Well this was even more minimal than the regular tour dates. Salah said it was the lamest thing he's ever seen.

I only know what I have read so if the delay was more than 1:45 minutes, how long was it?

I wasn't there either. What I've read said PJ ended at around 12:55 and Kanye started anywhere from 4:25-4:45. Also he was originally scheduled for 8:15 but he demanded that they reorganize the schedule and change it so that he got a late night slot.

We're getting way derailed here though, the point is it was a much bigger deal than you're making it out to be and because of that lesson learned it's highly unlikely they would ever even try with GnR.

I'm not going to argue with you but his set up was a scaled down version of his glow in the dark tour. That's how the whole mess started. He wanted to do the whole set up but it was too big so he had a scaled down version which was still big and still had many of the glow elements. This was far more than a normal band set up like say My Morning Jacket or Bruce.

Just because Salah said he was disapointed with it doesn't mean shit about how long it took to set up and what was involved with it. The fact is, he did his glow in the dark show. He didn't do some set that was absent of his Glow in the Dark set. He scaled it back a bit, no more no less.

Ok, and I have to agree with Kanye when said going on at 8:15PM in Tennessee when it's still completely light out in June would be fucking retarded especially when Bonnaroo was apparently going back and forth with him on whether the GITD stage setup would work. Finally they agreed a scaled back version would work and fit on the stage. That's how the story goes and like you say, who cares which side is right.

We're getting way derailed here though, the point is it was a much bigger deal than you're making it out to be

MMJ seems like such a shoe-in that there will be a whole lot of disappointed people if somehow they aren't on the lineup. Maybe they'll announce them as a late surprise which isn't really a surprise at all like WP in 08. They both took their turns having their year off.

i was there for the Kanye incident and to be honest, part of the blame goes to the Bonnaroo staff...

pearl jam went over time and then had to haul all their equipment out, then kanye wanted to try to put on some spectacle but you could see they could not get it fixed and it loooked terrible...

but kanye also deserves alot of shit cuz his whole organization should of been better prepped and his performance was horrible...

but it was a trip watching him perform with the sun coming up!

guns n roses could fit bonnaroo if they give Axl a late night spot and let him do whatever from 1am-5am....

what i never understood is how Kanye didn't know that he was scheduled for the opening slot before Pearl Jam. if it was going to be such an issue, why did he wait until the night of the show to cause a commotion about set times...?

apostle2
01-05-2010, 08:33 AM
he didn't, it went back and forth for a while apparently with Kanye requesting a late night slot and Bonnaroo asking him to play on the Which stage. Bonnaroo caved. Kanye's late night set got announced the week of Bonnaroo, like maybe the Monday before and it happened on Saturday night.

softbulletin
01-05-2010, 08:43 AM
There is also this:

Kanye and Usher specifically went out of their way to make it to Atlanta for the show. Usher flew in from a promo tour in Japan, while Kanye came to town, performed and flew right back out to make his concert at the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tennessee.

"Shout-out to Kanye, he flew all the way in," Jeezy said. "I had to throw him a private jet courtesy of Young."

And Pearl Jams set up was really minimal so I doubt they had much to do with it. Even with them ending late, Kanye's crew should have had from 12:55-2:15 to set up, a lot more than most bands have.

faxman75
01-05-2010, 09:19 AM
This argument isn't going to die is it.

I think it's been established there were people to blame on both sides. Kanye is a dick but the promoters didn't help and Pearl Jam went late. It's already been established in this thread that it took Pearl Jam some time to take down before Kanye could start his elaborate set up.

The average break between acts on the main stage is about an hour. Every article out there says Pearl Jam played an hour longer than they were supposed to and that Kanye's stage was elaborate.

Did you guys ever read his angry apology?

Here's his side of the back and forth between Kanye and Bonnaroo.

“BONNAROO SHOULD HAVE RELEASED A STATEMENT IN MY DEFENSE BUT SINCE THEY HAVEN’T LET’S BREAK DOWN THE WALLS ON THIS TRUMAN SHOW AND LET YOU KNOW WHAT REALLY OCCURRED!!! FOR OVER A MONTH WE WENT BACK AND FORTH ON WETHER OR NOT WE COULD EVEN FIT MY STAGE AT THE FESTIVAL. ONE DAY THEY WOULD SAY YES… WE’D SEND THEM OUR SPECS THEN THEY THEY’D SAY OK… THEN THEY WOULD SEND SPECS BACK THAT DIDN’T FIT THE STAGE. WE WERE OBVIOUSLY DEALING WITH FUCKING IDIOTS WHO DIDN’T REALLY HAVE THE CAPACITY TO REALLY PUT ON THIS SHOW PROPERLY. THEY TRIED 2 GIVE ME A TIME SLOT WERE IT WAS STILL LIGHT OUTSIDE … I HAVE A FUCKING LIGHT SHOW DUMB ASS, IT’S NOT CALLED GLOW IN THE DARK FOR NO REASON SQUID BRAINS!”

and then there's the rest of his rant err umm apology.

“MY PRODUCTION MANAGER TRIED TO LOAD IN FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE I WENT ON STAGE BUT THE FESTIVAL WOULDN’T ALLOW US TO DO ANYTHING UNTILL PEARL JAM LEFT THE STAGE. PEARL JAM ENDED ONE HOUR
LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT THAT POINT WE’RE RACING AGAINST THE SUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT 4:20AM DON COMES BACK 2 THE BUS AND TELLS ME, ” IT WOULD TAKE 45 MORE MINUTES TO PUT ALL YOUR PYRO IN!” I SAY I HAVE TO GET OUT THERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE . I”

“I CUT A FEW SONGS FROM THE SET BECAUSE I WANTED PEOPLE 2 EXPERIENCE STRONGER WHILE THERE WAS STILL SOME DARKNESS TO PERFORM IT IN. I’VE STRUGGLED WITH STRONGER FROM IT’S CONCEPTION. REMEMBER LAST SUMMER WHEN I CANCELED SOME TV APPEARANCES. IT WAS BECAUSE I DIDN’T WANT TO PERFORM STRONGER IN THE DAYTIME. ANYONE WHO CAME TO THE GLOW TOUR CAN UNDERSTAND WHY I WANTED PEOPLE TO SEE IT PROPERLY. IT BROKE MY HEART THAT I COULDN’T GIVE THESE FANS STRONGER IN IT’S GREATEST FORM… BY THE TIME I GOT TO STRONGER IT WAS DAYTIME AND IT BROKE MY HEART.”

“WHEN I GOT 2 “THROUGH THE WIRE” I STEPPED ON THE FRONT PART OF MY STAGE AND THERE WAS SO MUCH LIQUID ON THE STAGE I COULDN’T MOVE WITHOUT SLIPPING. I HAD TO ADJUST MY WHOLE PERFORMANCE STYLE BECAUSE OF IT.” …
“I’M SORRY TO EVERYONE THAT I DIDN’T HAVE THE ABILITY 2 GIVE THE PERFORMANCE I WANTED TO. I’M SORRY… SOMETIMES I GO 2, 3 DAYS W/O SLEEP WORKING ON MY PERFORMANCE… I HAVE TO ICE MY KNEES AFTER EVERY SHOW AND THEY HURT WHEN I WALK THROUGH THE AIRPORT… HAVING AN EXPENSIVE STAGE CUTS MY PAYDAY IN HALF… “

I've liked all of the lineups since 06. I even liked last year's a lot. I'm biased with 06 cause of Radiohead. It's hard to put them into buckets of "great" and "amazing" cause all of them would've got me to go if I had the money.

liquidsnake28
01-05-2010, 09:54 AM
I don't think "fucking boring" was the right way to phrase it. Perhaps "unfamiliar with most of the bands on the lineup so I can't form an honest opinion." I really wish I would have gone in 02 and 03 because there was a sense of doing something different at those. That feeling was still somewhat there in 04 and even in 05 but the first one would have been amazing to be at. Now it's just another mainstream music festival, the best one IMO but still just a mainstream fest. Oh well, there's about a hundred other successful smaller festivals in the country now to take it's place while bonnaroo is one of the big three, so it goes.

Noodles, haha. That word in reference to this festival brings back some serious memories. I used to have a friend who called himself Noodles. He was once playing around with a whole vial of acid (about 100 doses worth) in his mouth and he accidentally cracked it with his molars and digested the whole fucking thing. He was tripping for like a week straight. Dude is permanentaly crazy. True story.

The second confirmation is in, Alison Krauss and Union Station with Jerry Douglas. http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-31528-Savannah-Life-in-Photos-Examiner~y2009m12d30-Alison-Krauss-on-Tour-with-Jerry-Douglas
"Alison Krauss and Union Station are currently touring with Dobro legend Jerry Douglas. The tour begins in January in Chattanooga, promoting Alison Krauss’ new album “Lonely Runs Both Ways.”
Alison Krauss and Jerry Douglas have announced 26 dates with more to be added in the next upcoming weeks. The pairing will also make appearances at Bonnaroo and the Telluride Bluegrass festival this year."

I'll definitely watch this set because Alison has an amazing voice and Jerry Douglas is just awesome with everything he does. The first time I saw him I was just blown away.

There's also a rumor about Nada Surf which would be cool for 90's nostalgia. I only know that one "I'm popular" hit song.

We're talking about Kings of Leon. Apparently even by the time they released their first recording their bass player still didn't know how to play bass.

Hell, MGMT didn't seem to know how to play their instruments until 2009 despite having an album out in 2007.

It's not a clear cut answer. I think if you have a band and record contract then that's when you started. You think a band starts with their first studio recording. I think you have to have songs and know how to play a few things before you get to the studio. You don't. Not a big deal.

No no no, see this is a prime example of you being too fucking stupid to even understand the point you're arguing. I'm not saying anything about whether or not they know how to play their instruments.

A band gets signed to Capitol records in 1999. Maybe they dick around for a while, go through some lineup changes, maybe they take an absurdly long time to record their debut going through several stages of retooling at the label's behest. During this time period they are not playing any shows. Let's say that the retooling gets so stressful they say fuck it for a little while, and don't end up returning to the studio until late 2000. They finally get the revisions done and have a product the label is satisfied with by early 2001 and the album is released and they start playing shows.

Did the band come out in 1999 or 2001?

If you thought our debate about whether it's KOL or not was bad then you should see the roo boards. They have a good ten pages of speculation about that one twitter clue. This one was such a stretch it had me laughing,

"I have a reach, Dr. Dre, I know he was around in 2000, but "2001" is thought as his return album from not really being "around." I know "2001" was released in 1999. I am just trying to find a more appealing option."

Haha, and lots of them are seriously considering Norah Jones, while a few think it's Kenny Chesney. ... wow

KOL will do shows in 2010 if they score big at the grammys..... they learned alot from U2 when they toured and in articles people have said that Caleb is very into making their band huge so they are a possibility...
