View Full Version : Do you have any questions for a goldenvoice executive?

Stefachink

One of the goldenvoice executives is coming to my video production class as a guest speaker in November. You guys have any questions you would like for me to ask him? I'll try my best to get as much answers as possible ... and no, the guest speaker will not be Paul Tollett. My teacher told me his name but I completely forgot. I think it started with a D though ... anyway, ask away :)

I don't understand what you're all quibbling about, unless you're trying to say that the correct preposition is "at" or possibly "from" instead of "for."

I'd like to know if he's got a personal interest in live music and if so/not whether that has any bearing on his professional capacity.

If you can think of a less stupid way to ask that, it'd be great.

In addition to California, I know that Goldenvoice does concerts in Seattle, Anchorage and Honolulu (maybe other cities too?). Stefachink
11-23-2009, 04:53 PM
The guest speaker came today! Here are the things he had either said or observations that I have made.

1. He's friends with Dani (PF).

2. He is currently working with Goldenvoice but plans to move to AEG in about a week.

3. The guy is in a band, so to answer your question, MissingPerson, he does have interest in live music, very chill guy. I think my teacher said he was 22 and a former student at my high school, which is how we were even able to get him to come in and talk to us.

4. There most likely will never be another Coachella DVD because the first one wasn't as successful as they had hoped.

5. Goldenvoice does their best to build a strong bond and connection with the artists they book for their events. (They like to keep them close).

6. MSTRKRFT's set-up at Coachella wasn't showcased because it didn't even fit on the stage.

7. The message boards are monitored very closely; usually the strongest voices don't get heard. (Not sure, exactly what he meant by that).

8. Goldenvoice is fined $15,000 by the city for every hour they have music playing past 12am. So next time you're chanting your "One more song, one more song!", think about how much that's gonna cost for them. It also doesn't help when bands decide to do whatever they want and continue playing past their set times.

9. Coachella lost money in 2006 because they spent too much of it on the construction of Daft Punk's pyramid; they had some kind of agreement thing going on. But, building that pyramid was definitely Goldvenvoice's idea.

10. They've already got the headliners figured out. He wouldn't tell me who they were but he said it'll be good; I'd trust the guy with music taste if I were you.

11. At one point in time, he was standing by Thom Yorke, back to back, but he said he got too nervous to say anything and ran away.

11. If you want a job with Goldenvoice/AEG, he suggests you try and get as much experience as you possibly can before you apply. Compile a portfolio of concerts/events that you've planned, put together, and promoted. I'm assuming that the portfolio would consist of fliers that you made, artists that played at your events, ticket stubs, pictures, etc. When you are working with Goldenvoice, you can't be biased with the artists that have been booked just because of your music taste. You have to treat them all equally. He said the major downside working for Goldenvoice is that you don't get to experience the events as much as you'd like to, y'know, since you'd have to be working of course. And, yes, working with Goldenvoice does involve working at their venue's ticket booths (in case you were wondering how those people get those jobs). Oh, Goldenvoice is also responsible for managing the dressing rooms and catering for the artists.

12. Dude kept bringing up Royksopp multiple times.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to ask all of the questions that I wanted to. The guest speaker came in during lunch, which ours is only a lousy 30 minutes and we didn't actually start 'til 10 minutes into the lunch period :(

This says to me, that they might listen to what the casual board member has to say, as they are a better reflection of a potential ticket purchaser, rather than the most hardcore and vociferous of us, as we are a small minority, with only a slight idea as to what actually sells tickets.

But, I might just be talking out of my ass.

It's going to be in the dance tent, and it's going to be legendary. I'll do anything I need to do. Tell me what we need to build. Anything." They put that whole pyramid thing together. But it took a lot of money to get that going. The cynic in you thinks, "Well, maybe we offered too much money." But I realize what it was. We offered enough for them to make the pyramid, and that's what it was all about. They spent every single dime on that production. They walked away from that show without a dollar from what we paid them. That's true art.

well its good to at least here that COACHELLA will be a go for this year... the "Dates" thread is freaking out (including me) about if it was going to happen at all. So the headliners are allready set? what the heck's the hold up......?

and i noticed the downside of being a GV employee after working so closely w/ them during the Julian C. shows, i mean its not that bad... id still def jump at the opportunity.

This says to me, that they might listen to what the casual board member has to say, as they are a better reflection of a potential ticket purchaser, rather than the most hardcore and vociferous of us, as we are a small minority, with only a slight idea as to what actually sells tickets.

But, I might just be talking out of my ass.

So that's why Asobe Seksu is never booked.

The guest speaker came in during lunch, which ours is only a lousy 30 minutes and we didn't actually start 'til 10 minutes into the lunch period :(

fuck you.

that shit is is a staple of my coachella experience.

I agree! I've had a plain doughnut and had it taste like the best thing in my life!! When you are on a good one, have 15 minutes before the next act you want to catch and have all of 10 bucks to spare that stuff tastes gourmet.

On another note....

# 4 does make me sad because the way they made the DVD trailer out to be was almost a documentary type depicting the actual experience as a festival goer and when I finally bought it and watched it, it was just a bunch of interviews of artists and live performances. That's really cool that they did that, but if they did ever decide to do another one I'd like to see what different people do and see while they are there. Have them talk about various acts they've seen and what they liked most and disliked then show a clip of it.

Or follow several groups of people for a day and show what they do before, during and after the show. Like follow a group who camp at the festival, people who stay at a hotel, rent a house, drive out for just on day and people who have flown or drove a long way just to be at Coachella. It would accurately depict what it takes to get to Coachella--what it means to be there--and the experience you have while there that can never be replicated, whether you've only been there once or several times. Each time is a different experience.

And that's what I'd like to see on the next DVD. If they so choose to do another one.

Those are all great ideas! I completely agree with you. It'd be cool to make the DVD into something like that YouTube video that was posted last year. It did an amazing job of really capturing the essence of Coachella. Does anyone know what I'm talkin' about? .. I think the background music had like Jose Gonzalez and Aphex Twin in it. A whole DVD like that would be AWESOME .. with short interviews and live performances in between :thu I do have dreams of becoming a director one day. Heck, I'll make the video for them! But really, no; I wouldn't. I love Coachella too much to be working behind the scenes.

I actually don't know 100% if he's an executive. I didn't ask. If he's not, then my teacher could have been sugar-coating it to get people to take part in the whole guest speaker deal. Doesn't Bonnaroo come out with DVD's for each year of the festival? One has to wonder how those are successful then, but Coachella's isn't.

Coachella's was sold to the masses, Roo's is sold directly to the ticket buyers as an extra $10 or so when they purchase a ticket.. doing it that way, Roo knows in advance how many to press, and i have a feeling the only way to lose money on something like this is to press a shitload and then be sitting on them for the next five years.. but i could be wrong..

No, we want both! Come on, we got that shitty cube dj immediately after someone started a topic requesting him and this wouldn't cost nearly as much and would be better received. I can understand Bat for Lashes not playing if she doesn't want to do a third US tour for Two Suns and as a foreign act, it would cost nearly ten grand in expenses to fly her and the band out for a one-off, and then there's visas, equipment, and all that drama,

If anything, they should put together one more DVD following 2010's festival comprised of the majority's favorite moments/performances since the release of the first one. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I believe most would agree some of the festival's finest, most cherished performances have occurred in the past 3-4 years, and all we have to remember those by are memories and several webcast rips.

I'd love to see all acts/artists record their live performance on-the-spot, and then have the live shows available for sale (with corresponding graphics & artwork) in one of the Coachella Tents. Lots of artists already do this, i.e. Allman Brothers, Peter Gabriel, Duran Duran, The Radiators from New Orleans, Kiss, etc. It would make some nice momentos to take home from Coachella at the end-of-the-day (professionally recorded and pressed CDs), the bands could make some extra money, Golden Voice could take their cut, and there would be no reason to buy/search for bootlegs afterwards. Seems like a win-win to me!
