What puts a person into each of these categories? Are they all the same? Do all lack payment?

I know a guy who has slept on quite a few train cars but is he not a bum if they weren't all making some kind of income? How does one know which word to use and when?

I would like to know how tramp stamps play a role in this.

My point is people/persons should just let it go. You know, kinda like how blacks have embraced the "n" word in certain areas. People should just start calling eachother hobo and bum and laughing it off. Maybe make "tramp" the word that makes you go all Jerry Springer on a bitch.

If a guy says "you're a fucking hobo" just say "woot, that's right I tramp it up big time, you see all those cans I got last week at the drive?"

Or maybe bum is like a compliment because you're so good at it you [don't] get paid!

Oops! I adjusted that in my mind, but not in practice.

Using the song "Tramp" by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas as a guide, a tramp is something of a disheveled fellow who needs a haircut and might be seen wearing overalls, which brings to mind the lovable urchins in Dexy's Midnight Runners.

Therefore, we're left with "bum" and "hobo." I become aroused when I set hobos on fire in the middle of the night, so I guess a bum is sort of like a less sexy vagrant.

There's a difference and a heirarchy. Seasick Steve says so.

Now I've got "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves" stuck in my head. Thanks a lot.

Hobo's have a code, which increases their standing greatly.

I know a very nice homeless gentleman who identifies himself as a tramp. In fact, he seems quite proud of his tramp pedigree.

You have to Own your title, whatever that may be. :)

Found the Seasick Steve quote.

"The difference between a hobo, a tramp and a bum is; a hobo goes from town to town looking for work, a tramp goes from town to town and doesn't look for work, and a bum doesn't go from town to town and doesnt look for work. I've been all three."
