Mumford and Sons
The National
MGMT
Public Enemy
She & Him

Sasquatch always does a decent job of getting a lineup that's enjoyable and different from Coachellas. I'm surprised about no Faith No More or Dead Weather but we get Massive Attack, something Chella and Roo were unable to do this year. Big props to the organizers this year.

Is Ween really a headliner? I still can't wrap my head around that. I really don't have a problem with it but it's just odd to me. I saw Ween in 1994 at Metro in Chicago on the Chocolate and Cheese tour and it was fucking unforgettable and so much fun. However, I have not listened to or seen Ween since 1994. I'll be downloading some tonight. Pure Guava is a classic album and something I can still listen to today.

There's more than one stage apparently... and a dance tent.

If its an amphitheater, is there a cordoned-off "reserved" section at the bottom where there are seats? That would be wack.

It is a big ampitheater show but it's the most beautiful ampitheater in the country and there are 2 other stages and a tent that are not pictured so there is plenty of room to walk around and check out other stages.
also, the pictures don't even do this place justice, when you arrive go to the top of the hill and look down. You will be in awe.

No seats. There is a pit in the front that they open up at the beginning and end of each act. They don't force you out at the end of each act so you can stay if you want to be close for muliple acts.

in terms of Sasquatch not feeling "like a festival", the only other festival I've been too is Coachella, so it's kind of like comparing apples to ..the best fucking festival on earth.
The way I put it is Sasquatch is a poor substitute for Coachella, but an incredible addition.

02-16-2010, 07:53 AM
There are a couple of sections of the amphitheater that are corded off, HB, one ADA mandated and one for VIP. There is a "main floor" sort of area that is sectioned off into two parts, both are GA, and have a slight incline, so you can actually see from the floor. As for the amphitheater, there aren't really bad seats since it's set into a hill. If you're with a group and want to sit with good seats for the headliners, you do have to stake out some ground earlier in the day.

That said I have a far better time at Sasquatch each year than I do at Lollapalooza. I look at Sasquatch like Coachella's smaller brother. It's not as great but it's a bit more intimate, the venue is damn near perfect and the lineup is always good.

This is fairly easy as well. I have heard others here and have seen people just leave their blanket with a hat or something not valuable on it to save their spot and most everyone is respectful of your space so you could get close for some and return to your blanket on the lawn later. With a group it's easy to just take turns checking out stuff and returning to your spot too.

They're not festivals that you can directly compare, but I'll say this: Sasquatch's setting beats out Coachella by a long-shot and there are some obvious up-sides like being able to bring in food/having not much security check and being able to drink (rather than restircted to designated areas). The only downsides I can think of to Sasquatch are that the food vendor options are pretty limited compared to how spoiled we are at Coachella, and that by the end of the weekend, you will be tired of running up and down that damned hill. :)

The Cure played over 2.5 hours from what I recall but bands that aren't prepared with as much material like say Jane's Addiction only played 90 minutes. I don't think there is a curfew, it seems to be in the middle of nowhere.

What time does the music stop at this festival?
I believe it's scheduled to stop around 11:30PM, except for Monday. Headliners have ended earlier and later. (The Cure went until like 1? I think? I can't remember).
So they let bands play longer?
Cuz I am a huge MMJ fan, but you have to give them room to stretch out and do their thing otherwise it loses its power.
The Cure played for about 2.5 hours in 2008, and there didn't seem to be any indication of them being asked to stop. (Robert was really sick for that leg of the tour, so it seemed more like they just ran out of steam rather than running into a curfew).
Also, in the past, nothing has completely conflicted with the headliner (one of the other stages usually overlaps partially). Last year (the first year of) the dance tent went on well into the headliners though.

Very solid lineup. Love the fact that Massive and Pavement get headliner length sets. However, now that most of the major festivals have announced their lineups (except for Lolla), I think it's safe to say that Coachella is by far and away the winner this year. No disrespect to Sasquatch, but none of the big fests can compete with Coach. No other fest has Gorillaz, FNM, Orbital, Plastikman, Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear, etc. etc. Last year was a bit weak for Coach, still a great time though. But when you compare Coach, Roo, and Sasquatch this year, the ranking has to go Coach #1 by far, sasquatch #2, and Roo # 57. Wow, did Roo blow it this year or what?

sin123! I know, I know, after SF Warfield and Coachella especially.
I'm not too keen on a lot of the bands in the line-up, which is the problem. But maybe after seeing a lot of them at Coachella I'll want to see them again. I'm REALLY going for Massive Attack, plus the fact that I want to go camping this year since I am not camping at Coachella and I love camping anyway, AND that The Gorge is only about a 5 hour drive away from me. And that a lot of my friends wax on about the festival each year so I wanna see what I've been missing!
So, really...no excuse!

It Still Moves is their best album, followed by Z. Evil Urges is possibly the worst. As far as whether their earlier or later stuff is more accessible, it's the opposite of what forza said. The first two albums are by far the least accessible. As HB said, Okonokos (the live one) is probably the best place to start.

i think it dilutes some of the excitement when you have to read the lineup on some news site or blog and not on the website of the actual event. at the moment people are most stoked on the lineup (release) is when you should have all the info available on the website.

I think I'm gonna skip Sasquatch and try Bumbershoot instead. Cheaper, more artsy (from what I understand), more time to enjoy the city as well as the festival.
My wife has never been to Seattle, so it's one of these, and let's face it, Bumbershoot had Sheryl Crow last year, so I don't have to worry about THAT happening again. Of course... there's always Dave Matthews. Yuck.

I dig MMJ's live album. Not sure about their studio work yet.
lots of albums to listen to
It Still Moves is their best album, followed by Z. Evil Urges is possibly the worst. As far as whether their earlier or later stuff is more accessible, it's the opposite of what forza said. The first two albums are by far the least accessible. As HB said, Okonokos (the live one) is probably the best place to start.
who? 8^)
I thought bing and hotwire were supposed to have good deals? Southwest is cheaper by over $100 dollars.

I think it's fucking terrible. It's extremely overpriced for what it is. The stages are low budget with terrible sound. The crowd is as annoying as it gets with children everywhere. Not my cup of tea at all. But maybe it's because I'm a Seattle native and have watched the POS festival balloon from $10/day to $50/day in 10 years.

I like Bumbershoot a lot, but it's not similar to Sasquatch. It's an arts festival, not a music festival. Music is a large component of that, but there is also an emphasis on theatre, dance, comedy... . The headliners for Bumbershoot are very mainstream compared to the other festivals, and there is a much, much more varied lineup as they have stages loosely configured around genres.

So, Bonnaroo is not worth crossing the country for this year.
I had 8 people from around the country and an RV in Atlanta lined up!
Then they came out with that bunk lineup.
Was really looking forward to camping and partying all in the same place as opposed to Coachella with the driving in and driving out scene.
What is Sasquatch! like for the whole 3 day scene?
Is there camping at the venue?
RV spots?
I noticed someone wrote something about wild horse campground.
Is that nearby? No campfires? what kind of camping is that?
Any info at all would be helpful as this will be my first time to this festival.
Thanks

Regarding Sasquatch - I wanted to want to go... but I'm not a fan of any of the big acts.. or those I am I've seen in recent years or will see at Coachella. Lots of festival bleed there... Pavement, MGMT, Vampire Weekend, LCD Soundsystem, Dirty Projectors, Passion Pit, She & Him. I don't really need to see these acts twice in a couple months. My Morning Jacket I saw at Lolla a few years ago, and they were good enough, but not my thing. I think I enjoyed the American Dad episode about MMJ more than their performance itself. I can see the value in Massive Attack, Tegan & Sara, the comedy acts and a few other bits... but I can see the National in Hollywood.
I think Bumbershoot is exactly what I need - some art, some comedy, some music. Not being tied down to a stage is probably a good thing for that sort of festival, so having a crummy undercard is alright, as long as the headliners are enjoyable. I see it as sort of a West Coast Voodoo Fest - we went to enjoy the N'awlins feel more than to see Lenny Kravitz and Ween, and it doesn't hurt that the tickets are 1/3 the price of Coachella.
But I've never been to Sasquatch OR Bumbershoot - so I could be wrong. If there were more unique (non-Coachella) acts this year, it would be different. Plus... I'm holding out that Soundgarden will be at one of the two - and since it ain't Sasquatch....

Not to be rude, but this info has been posted over and over again.
Here is Wild Horse's FAQ - if you are interested in this campground, you should book right away. They will probably sell out today or tomorrow.

Neither campground allows campfires. This is car camping, and it's in an area which could be susceptible to wildfire conditions.

It's really not like that at all, and the undercard is usually stronger than the headliners -- just far more varied. I suppose you could compare that to Voodoo, instead of jazz there will be a bluegrass/country/etc stage.

I really hate the way Bumbershoot handles main stage -- the general festival is very lenient about what they let you bring in, and then when you head to the main stage, all that outside food, beverages/water, etc gets taken away. You can't bring in reusable water bottles or umbrellas (meaning you can't have them in your bag). It's in a football stadium, for god's sake. I usually don't even watch headliners at Bshoot because of the hassle and awfulness of the venue. Fortunately there is always something decent at another stage.

I feel like SMD is going to 'headline' the dance tent, and Massive Attack will be on the main stage. Last year the main stage headliner went longer than the dance tent. So you should be able to catch some of both either way.

Not to be rude, but this info has been posted over and over again.
Here is Wild Horse's FAQ - if you are interested in this campground, you should book right away. They will probably sell out today or tomorrow.
http://www.wildhorsecampground.com/index.php?act=viewDoc&docId=4
Neither campground allows campfires. This is car camping, and it's in an area which could be susceptible to wildfire conditions.
You're not being rude at all!
You explained the wildfire conditions. Thanks! Makes sense now.
I looked through the first 10 pages of the thread and the last couple.
I got some info and googled wildhorse.
Already looked at their FAQ.
just didn't know what the scene was like at the Gorge camping vs wild horse.
so far, I have:
wild horse:
quiet hours
hot showers
shuttle
Gorge on-site camping:
Showers limited
Party all night long
Walk-in
Anything else you could throw out there for the side-by-side comparison?

I really hate the way Bumbershoot handles main stage -- the general festival is very lenient about what they let you bring in, and then when you head to the main stage, all that outside food, beverages/water, etc gets taken away. You can't bring in reusable water bottles or umbrellas (meaning you can't have them in your bag). It's in a football stadium, for god's sake. I usually don't even watch headliners at Bshoot because of the hassle and awfulness of the venue. Fortunately there is always something decent at another stage.
With regards to the main stage, I agree. Post festival, I filled out a Bumbershoot survey, which was worded in such a way as to make me think that they are going to alter the way the main stage tickets are handled i.e pay a different price to have access limited to the main stage and the use of an alternate entrance as well.

Also, is everyone staying at Wildhorse? If this is the case, than Erika and I should get rid of our premiere camping and go for Wildhorse.
That's a good question. I'm still wary that maybe Soundgarden is mapping out their festival strategy and will get added to a few (although the Lolla rumor may damage that). MMJ opened for Pearl Jam at Lolla in '07, and they haven't really become a household name since then (Stan Smith excepted). It wouldn't shock me to see SG get added over MMJ.
But again, I'm a SG diehard, so I try to weasel them in as much as possible. I simply cannot see them skipping both Washington-based music fests.

fikus - It sounds like there are around a dozen of us for Wild Horse so far. I think you & your wife would like it better than Premier camping (which didn't feel very premier at all!) It's also a much, much smaller place and will be easy to find other people even if we all arrive at different times.
And if KOL could headline last year, I suppose MMJ can now.

Just for Bumbershoot.
Sasquatch has a three tiered arrangement for the main stage "seating." There is an orchestra pit, which you sometimes have to wait to be let into, followed by a larger pit area and then there is the sloped lawn area with the amazing view of the Gorge. The sound isn't bad at all from up the hill either.

What do the big Ween fans recommend I listen to? I pretty much know old school Pure Guava from start to finish but not much of anything else except a few songs off of Chocolate and Cheese.

Ween plays a LOOONG set though - at least they did at Voodoo last year. They ended up playing simultaneous with Lenny Kravitz (IIRC, if not, it was one of the other headliners) on an opposite stage, and they outlasted the "major" headliner. George Clinton and P-funk did the same thing on another day (Eminem, I think).
But I'm not really aware of the stage setup at Sasquatch, to know if that's an option.

Yet I got that email from Scott at Wildhorse reservations saying "Thank you for your recent reservation request to Wildhorse Campground.
However, reservations are not confirmed until payment has been received."
So did my Paypal go through or not? Because there are no refunds, I don't want to have to pay twice but I also don't want to lose my camping spot. I've emailed that Scott guy to get it sorted but haven't heard anything back.
Anyone having a similar experience? Is it because I paid through my Paypal account and not credit card? Normally, even if the funds aren't taken out of my bank account right away, I at least get the confirmation email...
