Depending on where you are for MA it shoudn't be more than a 5-7 minute walk. Maybe 10 if you are in the pit for MA. It's basically an all uphill walk if you are down in the pit at the main stage for MA and going to the Rumpus for BS.

I honestly doubt they'll ever play Dance Yrself Clean. It doesn't seem to fit in with their live style.

Check out the new camping area called the Terraces:

The Terraces are the newest and most exclusive addition to the Gorge Campground. Situated between Premier camping and the Gorge Amphitheatre, this area is the quietest of the camping areas. Lush grass fronts a gravel parking bay with breathtaking views across the Gorge. There are a restricted number of these roomy sites available so be sure to reserve your spot now.

Here you will get the largest space, free shower & restroom facilities separate from the general camping area, a free shuttle service to the Amphitheatre that drops you right at the gate. 24 hour security, a dedicated concierge service, free fresh coffee and donuts in the morning to enjoy as you wake up to the best views in the campground (in our opinion). You will still have access to all the fun and facilities of the main campground. It'll be a quick and easy out from here once your stay is over and we'll hope to see you back again for the next amazing Gorge concert.

All for $349 a vehicle, lulz.

The map of the festival grounds looks interesting. Not *that* different than before, but it looks like there are multiple exit paths now, possibly more places to get free water (I can't tell if they're counting sinks as water fill stations -- if so, then there are probably less than previous years).

The pond has always been there, it's smaller than pictured, but has ducks. ;)

Terrace camping... what, is this the premier of premier camping? I don't buy any claim of 'premier' passes at the Gorge until I hear reviews back of people actually getting something more that is in regular camping. Last year was a mess.

I was laughing at that too. Not to mention if there are 3 people in your car you are looking at $100+ each. I'm not sure it's worth it for donuts. We get showers and a shuttle already at Wild Horse. I'm sure it's kinda nice but reviews are definitely needed before thorwing down that kinda coin.

Amy, it's really not very hot at Sasquatch. On the warmest days, the sun can be a bit much around mid-day and later, but it's nothing compared to Coachella. If anything, I've been slightly cold in the mornings, in my previous years' pictures from Sasquatch, I see people wearing jackets first thing in the morning.

A note about the weather - it can be quite unpredictable. There was just a tornado in Moses Lake which is about 30 miles east of the Gorge. Bring your tornado gear, just in case.

It was completely punk rock and reminded the three of us of our days at the Gilman in Berkeley during the early-mid nineties. Plus, it totally confused the sh!t out of 90% of the crowd. The best part is when he says that when you get this many people together in one place, not everyone there is going to be good people. It was funny as hell, but we were there to post up for TVOTR and get front row center for probably the last time we were to see NIN...sniff.

That's why he went off on the crowd so much. They were playing to the early NIN crowd, full of homophobic bros. When he initially came out on stage, he was telling a very awkward story about his first festival experience. I heard plenty of the bros heckling him and each other, and the gay jokes set him off. He ranted like that every other song.

It is still one of the most memorable shows I've attended, and nothing like their other live shows.

Thanks again Fikus for helping me get the poster to this show.

Ah, that's bullsh!t...I didn't know he was being heckled. When MCD took the stage we were eating dinner up at the concession stands stage left of the main stage and finished up quickly so we could get down there and see wtf was going on, plus Randy was familiar with their material and wanted to see them anyway.

Hilarious indeed. Then he started making out with the guitar player, ran off stage and lip locked a straight guy in the front row, and fell down about 34 times. Too bad he got cut off after their set, because he obviously had a lot more to say.

The guy in the tutu on the shoulders of the other guy crossed in front of me during one of the rants (it might be the one in the video above). He had something written on the back of his shirt in thin black ink, which is not legible in the video. I think it read, "I'm a whore." It fit well with the rants.

NIN at Sasquatch was awesome due to the venue and the fact that Erika and I were right in front of Trent, but you guys got a much longer set at Bonnaroo and a much better set list. It was also the only time we ever saw NIN during the daylight, but it was very fitting with the sunset.

We saw MA at the Berkeley Greek Theater in '06 and they bored us to tears. We do plan on checking out the last ~20 of their set though. This strategy worked really well for us with Jane's Addiction last year and I can't in good conscience pass up MAs set completely anyway, but there is no way we are missing Erika's favorite electronic artist(s) lay down some quality tracks in the dance tent ;)

Nice, it's actually very easy to see all of SMD and a nice bit of MA too. All ya have to do is head up to the lawn after SMD and then you'll get to see at least a couple of songs before the encore and then the encore itself. We did this last year for Jane's Addiction and caught 6 of their 13 songs, including Been Caught Stealing, Ocean Size and Jane Says.

It just keeps coming 'round again

There's actually the distinct possibility that we will get to hear new material from SMD:

Interview: http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=11899

Audio clips of 2 new tracks soon to be released: http://www.prefixmag.com/news/simian-mobile-disco-serve-up-delicacies/38731/

Hells yeah.

Edit:

Yeah, SMD - Aspic/Nerve Salad was released a month ago.

http://www.juno.co.uk/products/Aspic/389092-01/

The tracks are their venture in a new direction of dirty techno as they call it.

It's like starting a punk band in 2010.

Bon Iver lucked out with his backstory. I bought his record on vinyl, enjoyed many listens to it, and cannot now remember even a piece of a single song on it.

Iron and Wine and Calexico have always been boring NPR indie of the stereotypical stripe.

Iron and Wine and Calexico have always been boring NPR indie of the stereotypical stripe.

I don't dig Iron & Wine at all but like Calexico quite a bit. They even sound different. Calexico has a latin influence for instance and they all don't even use the same instrumentations. For instance Calexico uses horns.

That really sucks, Josh. I purchased my car a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire about 2 years ago. I paid $2600 cash for it off of craigslist. I will never buy new again. I refuse to have a car payment. For now at least.

Sounds like you just need a ton of routine maintenance so the good news is you can knock those out one a time. I would even wait for coupons or deals on those flushes. Oil change places always have deals on things. Good luck buddy. I know I need a serpantine belt replaced and like a fool i've been putting it off. Hopefully come July I can get it done. And yeah Faxy, car maintenance sucks. Mine is a 2002 Mazda Protege 5 I am buying off of my dad. It didn't really have many problems, that is, until I choose to buy it off him in 2007. He gave me a really good deal. However, like I said, every year around this time, like clockwork, it has major problems. It broke down on me THREE times on the way back from Coachella 2008. I always think "This next big fix up with fix it once and for all." But I know, knowing my luck, if I buy another used car (I don't have anywhere near enough to buy new) that I will just go through this cycle again. So for now, Im sticking with this car.

I hear spark plugs are pretty easy to change on your own. ;)

My dad made us learn how to change oil and perform various fluid flushes before he'd let us drive any of his cars. With the understanding that we took over the manual labor if we wanted to drive them. :P

I am nowhere near as big of a MMJ fan as I am a Muse fan. But I have a feeling this MMJ set is going to be special.

As soon as The Very Best end (at 7:15) I was planning on running back to the mainstage to hopefully get a spot in the pit area for Vampire Weekend. I usually attack to the left hand side of the stage. If we both get into the pit area, we will meet in there. If neither of us do, I say we meet to the left hand side. If one of us get in, and the other doesnt, I am sure that the other will get inside for MMJ as long as they hang out by the gate during VW. Then we can meet inside before MMJ.

Pavement have always been boring and the bit we caught last night was no exception.
They also arrogantly played over their time and even said they were going to as they did it.

Dirty Projectors have now used up their 6th and last chance to not bore the piss out of me. Not gonna be a 7th.

LCD had EVERYONE shakin ass allllll the way to the top of the Gorge. Total class.

Public Enemy looked like fun but we left to get situated for Massive Attack only to find Pavement blathering on for 140 more songs. Wish we knew they were going to when we left.

One thing that did strike me about last night is that it had the satisfied, "happy to be here" vibe that Coachella usually has but was somewhat lacking this year.

what are you guys talking about? overcrowded??? are you nuts? Sasquatch is a walk in the park compared to Coachella in terms of getting around and getting the spot you want for a show. (i hope you're not talking about the line to get in, because people were waiting at the back of a huge, unorganized line for no reason. we just walked around the crowd to where they were actually letting people in.)

And I'm not a Pavement fan, but I loved their set. Same goes for Massive Attack. I'm not a HUGE fan (really only familiar with the new album), but their set was in no way boring. And yeah, LCD was fucking awesome.

Also My Morning Jacket was goddamn brilliant. Holy. Fucking. Shit.

Personally, I had much more fun at Sasquatch than I did at Coachella this year. Coachella was the train wreck, Sasquatch was my saving grace. Not to say that Coachella didn't blow me away at times, but Sasquatch wasn't nearly as hot, dirty or full of assholes.

Overcrowded? Y'all are nuts... everything was a breeze. Went towards the pit right before LCD Soundsystem and was up in front for both them and Pavement with little difficulty. The real unfortunate problem with Sunday was scheduling. Tallest Man on Earth was just not festival material, despite my love for his first album. Tune-yards were interesting, definitely someone to pay attention to. Cymbals Eat Guitars were fairly awful. They Might Be Giants were really out of place, and I was entirely uninterested. XX were plagued with sound problems. LCD Soundsystem rocked. Pavement were pretty meh, but were quite good when they managed to get it together. Both times I've seen Malkmus on his own were better than this show by leaps and bounds.

The sound at Sasquatch is so fucking bad outside of the main stage. It would take a lot for me to go again with that in tandem with the terrible scheduling.

The crowd size seemed about the same as the past. Their queue system for getting into the pit seemed to be working pretty well but I mostly stayed back behind the mid barrier or seated right up behind the VIP section which made for a good base camp.

The XX actually sounded fine if you were way up front, but that stage had shitty sound all weekend. The Main Stage was pretty good all weekend. LCD absolutely killed it. Way better than Coachella in my opinion, probably because he wasn't shitfaced. Massive Attack was pretty intense and shockingly empty. Everyone just left after Pavement and I walked straight to the front. Idiots. But last night they pulled the plug on the artist they billed as "Boyze Noize." Fuck you, Sasquatch.

The best things I saw over the weekend were: My Morning Jacket - the Gorge is the perfect venue for them, Deadmau5 - wow, a big move forward from last year's set in the dance tent, Caribou - billed too early but still a great set, LCD - danced my ass off along with just about everyone else, Massive Attack - loved the reader board and the setlist, probably my highlight of the weekend, Temper Trap - had never listened but enjoyed this, She & Him - very sweet

Overall, I had a pretty good time. The weather was mostly fine except on Monday when it was cycling from blazing hot and sunny while raining and then back to comfortable breezes and clouds. The new main stage seemed, well, dark. I understand that they've enclosed the back to keep the winds down to safe levels but where was the lighting. It looked like LCD was playing in an empty dark cube. Would it have killed them to turn on some lights? The sound at main seemed improved but over the Bigfoot it was terrible. I left Public Enemy after ten minutes of watching them jump around and having the sound cutting out.

Wildhorse worked out pretty well logistically. Thanks to ZonkerB for getting a bunch of us organized and it was great to hang out with a bunch of the boardies. :thu The shuttles worked pretty well but unfortunately I never saw the showers because of the lines. And thankfully the campground appeared to be neon facepaint and feather free.

I just got back, and I had a fantastic time. It did not feel overcrowded to me at all! I was able to be up pretty close for quite a few sets, and I can't express how lovely it was to be with a crowd of people who said things like, "Excuse me," as they were moving in front of you to get closer. Everyone seemed very respectful about giving people space, I had room to dance/move at pretty much every set I was at--and I was right up front for a few. I'm still letting the weekend soak in, because it was such a different experience from Coachella. Some quick recaps:

Delta Airlines lost/misplaced all of the Japandroid's gear in Europe and they almost had to cancel (again), but borrowed some equipment and rocked the fuck out.

Randy of No Age twisted/sprained his ankle at the end of their set when he jumped off stage, but he handed his guitar to the few people in front (and I got to touch it, wooo!)

The Very Best turned that dance tent into a Soweto party.

Despite thanking the crowd in between every single song, Avi Buffalo was amazing live-serious guitar skills.

The entire left hill of the main stage was one giant dance party during Vampire Weekend

Booka Shade: BALLOONS, BEATS, FUN!

I thought LCD was a little underwhelming, because of the set list. Trials and Tribulations was a bit meh for me live.

I saw a ton of great music, camping at Wildhorse was seriously delightful and it was awesome meeting more of you. The crowd at Sasquatch was a TREAT compared to the selfish dickbaggery I've become accustomed to in California.

This was my sixth sasquatch and it was far from crowded. At no other festival can you get as close to the mainstage as you can at Sasquatch.
I basically have the same opinions as the rest:
LCD BLEW MY MIND. They were great at Coachella, but were transcendent at Sassy.
Pavement were sooooooooooooooo fuckin bad I could hardly stand it.
Broken Social Scene and the National killed it on Friday.
MGMT also were pretty hot.

Best things about Sasquatch 2010:
- Amazing sets from Patrick Watson, The National, Vampire Weekend, My Morning Jacket, LCD Soundsystem, Pavement and Massive Attack. (we didn't go Monday)
- Awesome weather. It started sprinkling during LCD's "All My Friends" but 'if you're worried about the weather, then you picked the wrong place to stay'. What a great moment.
- Awesome crowd. Some hilarious drunks. Some great costumes.
- I really enjoyed some partial sets from Dirty Projectors, Public Enemy, Deadmau5, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band.

Worst things about Sasquatch 2010:
- The food was crap. Coachella had some awesome grub, and Sasquatch fed us overpriced cafeteria food.
- The Bigfoot Stage. Horrible sound most of the time. Hard to see. Small screens positioned way too low.
- Organization was lacking. When we drove into the campground, there were no flaggers or signs directing us to a spot. The entrance to the festival was just one big mob of people cramming into one little spot.
- Too many corporate ads everywhere. This festival really sells out every year to the sponsors. I get it, but Coachella does not do this and it makes the festival feel more like a party and less like a commercial.

Overall, I had a great time. The positives far outweighed the negatives.

What a great weekend. It felt nice to be able to move around and secure a good spot with relative ease. LCD Soundsystem was easily my favorite. Blew their Coachella set out of the water. It was awesome seeing everyone synchronize dance on the hill during "All My Friends."
Massive Attack was also great. I liked how there was more emphasis on EDM this year... Boyz Noize and Booka Shade killed it.

I think Pavement is one of those bands that's like a "transitional fossil" on the great musical timeline. They only really made any sense (as an act of any note) in the climate of the early-to-mid 90s. Taken out of that context and without that prevailing zeitgeist to buoy them along, you find that they are really kinda boring. The color beige as a song.

The guys who camped next to me at Wildhorse started the synchronized dancing move at LCD (so this guy said).

Just got back safe and sound, guys. I had a fantastic weekend.

LCD were eaily the highlight of the weekend. I was going nuts during their set. Watching those videos Matt and Tessa posted gave me goosebumps. When I saw everyone on the hill doing it, I pointed it out to the group of people I was dancing with around me and we all started doing it. Soon enough, the entire floor was doing it too. James Murphy is the fucking man. Words cannot describe how much I loved LCD's set.

Massive Attack and Broken Social Scene were my other two highlights. The entire set was solid, but "Angel" was earth shattering. Broken Social Scene were fantastic too. Considering they only had an hour, they choose great material for a festival setlist. All the new songs sounded great and all the oldies they played sounded perfect.

The xx and Caribou were two acts that surprised me with how great they were. I dont know how The xx sounded at the back, but it sounded perfect at the front. Much better than I expected. Two Australians did try to pick a fight with me before they started, but I put their drunk asses in their place and they turned around a walked away. But yeah, dear Lord are Caribou awesome live. Dan seemed to be really appreciative of everyone there and looked like he was having a blast.

Camping at Wild Horse was a great idea too. Camping with everyone here was great. The site itself too was really accomodating. The food was great, the staff was helpful, the grounds were really nice and it had a much different atmosphere than Gorge camping. Good call on that all you.

Also, all 'yall complaining about overcrowding are nuts.

But yeah. I had a great weekend.

Also... LCD. Holy. Shit.

MMJ were great from what I saw. The opened with my 3 favorite songs in a row. I had to leave after about an hour and half because I didn't bring a hoodie and it was ridiculously cold. I saw REM and The Cure in 08 in the rain wearing just a t-shirt and was fine... but Saturday night was the coldest night I have ever expereinced at the Gorge.

I saw about 5 minutes of Ween. I left after that. They weren't terrible, I heard part of 2 songs and neither of them interested me enough to warrant them any more time. They just aren't my style. Faxman saw the entire set and said he loved it though.

liquidsnake28
06-01-2010, 05:24 PM
So how does the curfew situation here work, or was it really just that cold? MMJ was expected to play a longer set than that and I'm sure it had nothing to do with an unfavorable crowd.

rage patton
06-01-2010, 05:43 PM
By the time I left around 11:30... MMJ had an incredibly small crowd. No more than a couple thousand people. I dont think it had anything to do with the music though. Honestly I think most people left due to the weather. Maybe the band noticed this and cut it short. The Cure played for 2 hours 45 minutes in 08 and were schedule for 2 hours.

Also, if crowd size determinded headliners, this years headliners should have been...

Saturday: Vampire Weekend
Sunday: LCD Soundsystem
Monday: MGMT

liquidsnake28

Here's who I saw this weekend, with a brief review of each.
P = Partial set F = Full set:

Saturday

Laura Marling (P, good), Fool's Gold (F, meh), Minus the Bear (F, cool), Portugal the Man (P, ok), The Middle East (P, blah), Edward Sharpe (P, ok), Ok Go (F, a lot of fun), The Posies (P, ok), BSS (P, good), Miike Snow (F, awesome except for the horrible sound mix), The Very Best (F, fun, they did a foreign language cover of Yeasayer's Ambling Alp, which was pretty cool), Dam-Funk (F, ok), Z-Trip (F, good, he did a different set than what we'd seen him do recently, which was cool, he dropped Hunger Strike and all the lil kids in the tent were at a loss :nono), Deadmau5 (P, he's currently in the running to replace DJ Aoki as the worst DJ around) - Overall Saturday was my least favorite day.

Sunday

TMBG (P, I got to hear Istanbul so I was pleased), Kid Cuddi (F, Randy wanted to see him and it was aight), The xx (F, we were 15 ft away center stage and they sounded great, but I'm so very glad I saw them at their own show. As with Josh and Becky we had to put some space invaders in their place, douchebags), LCD Soundsystem (F, completely awesome...the synchronized dance, the rain, Yeah and I Can Change were pure fucking win), The Dirty Projectors (F, very good, we sang happy birthday to one of the female bandmembers' father), Pavement (P, sooo much better 15 years ago), SMD (F, Just the blond one, but his set had amazing energy with great track selection), Massive Attack (P, Erika and I are not impressed at all by MA, but enjoyed Teardrop), Booka Shade (F, Perfect) - Overall, Sunday was pretty rad.

Monday

Phantogram (F, they were awesome. After their set we went to their artist signing, very chill people and damn is that girl ever beautiful), Bobcat Goldthwait (F, mostly hilarious), Passion Pit (F, very good and sooo much better than last year), She & Him (F, really good and Zooey's so very cute), No Age (P, good, for LA punk), Camera Obscura (P, very enjoyable), Hudson Mohawk (P, alright, he was nervous and fucked up a little, but I think he'll be pretty good down the line), Neon Indian (F, very good, except the vocals were a little washed out in the mix), Boys Noize (F, Erika and I were dead center rail for the entire set including the craziness at the end. Even with Sasquatch's stupidity his set was fanfuckingtabulous, both of us got to shake his hand too) - Overall, Monday was a great end to Sasquatch.

While you may have the opinion that Vampire Weekend suck, a lot of people will disagree with you. I even talked to some people that didn't like Vampire Weekend at all before their show, and thought they weren't half-bad after their performance. They were even better at Coachella. Neither will Massive Attack, My Morning Jacket or Ween. Neither do Pavement or LCD Soundsystem for that matter. Vampire Weekend don't need hits as big as "Kids" or "Time To Pretend." Both Vampire Weekend and MGMT had similar sized crowds, however there was a crucial difference between the two... The crowd reaction.

MGMT only got reaction from 3 songs... the two songs previously mentioned, and "Electric Feel." During every other song MGMT played the crowd on the floor was dead and the people on the hill would sit down. During Vampire Weekend, the entire hill was on their feet the whole time and everyone in the pit was enjoying themselves. All the people around me were singing along to every song.

I seriously thought/hoped at that moment that it would start pouring. James Murphy is a (rain) god?

I'm also still charmed by that fucking whale that was making the rounds at half the sets on Monday (everybody touch the whale).

Honestly I think most people left due to the weather. Maybe the band noticed this and cut it short. The Cure played for 2 hours 45 minutes in 08 and were schedule for 2 hours.

It was really cold in 08 for the Cure too, and similarly the crowd really thinned out. (I was watching from the hill and the crowd became increasingly sparse over the last hour of the set).

Re: Pavement, they were actually a LOT better than I expected them to be. If you've checked out much live footage / mp3s of them, you know it could have been much more of a wreck than it was. There were some technical difficulties on Rattled by the Rush, but other than that... you can't say they "kept fucking up", they just play loose and sloppy and always have. I was pretty happy with the set. :)

My favorites of the weekend (in this order): MASSIVE ATTACK, The National, LCD, Passion Pit. Booka Shade was also pretty great for the little bit I saw (wish they'd not started until after MA ended, would have loved to dance a bit longer :D ).

Camping was fun, I can't imagine camping at the Sasquatch campgrounds again, Wild Horse is definitely the way to do the festival. I was a tiny bit worried that we'd be too loud for WH or that it'd be too quiet for us, but it was just right. ;)
