still no schedule??

As a passive fan of electronic music, I don't get DJ sets. I want to hear the songs you record with a new live spin, I don't care what ultra rare tracks you have been digging and want to share with the fans. Ultimately I get it, it's about the DJ making you dance but what's the point of a known act spinning if they aren't spinning their known shit?
I agree to an extent. I think it depends on the artist. I couldn't care less if an artist like SMD or The Bloody Beetroots perform a DJ set. But if it's The Chemical Brothers or Basement Jaxx... I much prefer live.

Well, sure, but I don't get the point of DJ sets from acts like SMD where they are primarily known for live performance of their own music rather than DJ sets or turntablism, etc. Though I've heard SMD in particular has decent DJ sets, it is really just a matter of having someone famous DJ'ing rather than someone famous for DJ'ing DJ'ing.

I keep hearing that SMD DJ sets are better than their live sets.

It shows they're just another EDM act. I don't hold acts like SMD or Boys Noize to the same standard as someone like The Chemical Brothers.

As an avid fan of electronic music, I totally agree with this. I have very little interest in people that are strictly DJs. There are very few exceptions to this rule.. someone like Aphex Twin or Josh Wink, I'll watch DJ. Obviously, I'd rather see a live set, but I'll take what I can get.

Monday:
Phantogram > Passion Pit > She & Him > Camera Obscura > JPNDRDS > Hudson Mohawk > Neon Indian > Boys Noize

OK, I need to finalize my plans.
1) Who is willing to give me and Jacob room at their Wild Horse campsite and a ride from the Seattle airport Friday evening?
2) Can anyone give us a ride back to the airport on MONDAY morning?
I ask this because Jacob is starting to not want to go at all and sell our Sunday Sasquatch tickets, but I REALLY want to see Booka Shade (and MA and SMD). One other option is renting our own car and getting a hotel somewhere nearby for Saturday and Sunday nights and just driving our own rental car back on Monday, but then I will only see any of you guys inside the festival on Sunday, and that would kinda suck.
Thanks, guys.

How late, Heidi? I need to rearrange my flight plans anyway, so I could try to coordinate an arrival time near to yours. I don't need YOU to bring us back Monday, but I am trying to find someone, ANYONE, who can give us a ride back Monday. Thank you!

I think Sasquatch is going to run a little differently this year, which is causing bands to switch stages and, in the case of PE and Nada Surf, switch days. This year also has more acts booked than ever before. I think they are having a hard time with the schedule, so I say lets give them time. Don't rush it. We don't wanna wind up with a shitty schedule.

I agree. If the schedule was ready, they would have posted it. Last year it was ready, but they had to replace cancellations with new acts at the canceled slot. They may wait another couple weeks to get it right this year, and it might look more like a Coachella schedule with lower billed acts playing later.

I'm pretty sure the little fold outs they gave out last year didn't have any of the updates on them too. It'd be cool if they had late night sets this year.

04-22-2010, 09:34 PM
Yeah, the print outs were made at the end of April last year, so the late changes were not reflected. That would be another reason to wait a bit longer this year to be more accurate.

HB... :) There are PNW beers and good beers at Sasquatch it's really expensive. They have standard crappy beers in the larger vendor areas as well as a craft/local beer section. My recommendation would be to pick up beer before heading to the area, and then throw a cooler of cold beer into your trunk to drink before heading in. They do not search your backpacks well but might notice a 6-pack. ;) I had no problems bringing a couple of flasks in though.
That brings me to a couple of notes for the first timers:
- The area where the festival is held is in the middle of nowhere. There is not a grocery store in the town (there is one in the next town). The nearest stores are a beer store, gas station, and a couple of restaurants. There is also a Subway in the gas station.
- None of these places are going to have a huge selection of beer, though the gas station has a walk in cooler which has more than just Bud, Miller, etc.
- Keep in mind that WA has tighter alcohol laws AND that you're going to be in a rural area. Liquor is in state stores, not groceries/gas stations/etc. Beer is sold more widely and legally can be sold 6AM-2AM, BUT what we found is that stores (other than gas stations) had limited hours on Sunday & Monday... it is a holiday weekend after all.

Dale, I'd suggest doing grocery & beer shopping in Seattle, once you get on the road towards Sasquatch, there is not a lot going on.
We stopped at a Safeway by the airport which wasn't great but wasn't terrible. (Mark, do you or Joel remember where I got the Woodchuck? I assume that was at Safeway). If a place has fancy cider, then I'd assume they have a pretty good beer selection.

I saw them at Pemberton. However, they only had a 45 minute set and it was like, 5 in the afternoon. It seemed like to me they were just getting going. I wasn't very familiar with the material and I enjoyed it, but wasn't blown away. I have a feeling that has more to do with their time limit and the time of day they were playing.
I am really looking forward to their set at Sasquatch. Is hoping for a 3 hour set too much?
EDIT: Just saw Tommy's post. Tommy, where are you planning on being during their set? I may have to join you.

I'm planning on being in the pit area for sure. Dead center. Not rail, though. Some place comfortable. I'll know it when I see it.
I don't think a 3-hour set is a lot to ask. They normally play between 2.5 and 3 hours anyway. They played 3 at Red Rocks when I saw them in 2008. And longer than that at Bonnaroo 2008. They're usually up for marathon sets. Hopefully they feel like doing it. Oh yeah, and rain.

Though I'll probably be catching deadmau5 during MMJ, it makes me happy to hear that headliners are given that long of a time to play. I hope that means we get an extensive Massive Attack set.
Do the subheadliners get longer sets? Will LCD be given over an hour?
TommyboyUNM
04-23-2010, 04:05 PM
It makes me happy to know that deadmau5 will likely be playing during MMJ. That will weed out a lot of the unsavories (no offense, Cara, you're cool).
Is Massive Attack even the type of band to play long sets? If so then I don't see why they wouldn't go on for at least 2 hours. And I think the very longest you're looking at for a subheadliner is an hour and 15 minutes. I can't remember how long Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Nine Inch Nails played last year.

I am betting this year both Ween and MMJ will get 2.5-3 hour sets. Sunday this year will also probably look like Sunday last year. Massive Attack and Pavement will both probably get an hour and half each. LCD will probably get 50 minutes or an hour.
Also, I kind of want to be close to MMJ... but I don't know if I could stand for such a long time. Being against the back of the barricade in the pit area might be a nice spot.

I wouldn't say you're being naive but the fact that he'll be on a bigger more open stage will change everything. It was like a mosh pit inside the tent for Deadmau5 last year. Having him play on the wookie now with make all the difference, plenty of space to dance. But yeah, you're probably right, Northwest/Canada crowd > most others.
fikus222
04-23-2010, 09:57 PM
Nah, you're not being naive at all. Last year's crowd for Deadmau5 primarily consisted of Canadians who were ecstatic to be there. I like that Canadians have adopted Sasquatch, it makes for an interesting dynamic. Plus, even their hicks are better than ours.

YES! I heard a couple of douchebags in the beer garden say dead mau five several times, and I had to hold myself back from laughing.
I will probably catch a bit of mmj & a bit of deadmau5 if I get a Saturday ticket. I'm still trying to ease J into the idea of Sasquatch: the overcrowding at Coachella this year really stressed him out. He actually sat out Saturday in our condo.

Some kid last year started arguing with me when I told him dead mau 5 isn't correct.
But overcrowding really won't be a problem at Sasquatch. It sold out in less than a month after the line up this year and sold out last year too. I'm sure the promoters would love to be able to sell more tickets and make more money, but they probably like more that their festival seems so exclusive and can sell out so quickly. They have their corporate sponsors, they have the ability to book great acts, and have a beautiful location. I don't think they'd ever risk their reputation as such a great festival and oversell.

Their band name was originally Management, but they were going to be sued by another band with the same name... so they changed their name to MGMT, with the intention of pronouncing it "Management." However, when they started getting more popular, people started calling them "MGMT," and they liked the way that sounded so they started calling themselves "MGMT" as well. So yeah... they are definitely "MGMT" and not "Management."

Very cool. However, I wouldn't count on seeing these posters for sale anywhere. Last year I went to the Official Poster event at an art gallery in Seattle hoping to buy some of the posters only to be told they weren't available for sale. Also, during the fest, the merch booths only had one or two of them up for sale. The only successful way to get one of these posters is to look up the artist and then contact them with your request.

Good news, the artist's name is listed to the left of the poster and all of the artists that I have looked up so far have their own website and/or online store, so it should just be a matter of emailing whoever did the poster you like. I'm thinking of picking up the xx and Caribou.

Ah here we go.
All camping reservations are per car or RV and are for up to four (4) people arriving together. $10 per night for each additional person above four (4) will be collected at the gate.
So those who want to be in wildhorse just need to be able to fit in a car with others and have $10/night cash money to pay at the gate.

Yes, if we can fit more than 4 people per car, they just have to pay extra at the gate. I think the challenge would be in fitting more than 4 people plus camping gear per car.
I don't think we have to caravan there together in order to camp together -- we asked about this at some point and they'd said they'd prefer that we arrive together (but would try to get us together if we didn't). Perhaps we can consolidate into a couple of groups. I know there are a few people who wanted to get there during day light; whereas there are a bunch of us arriving around 7-8PM and more arriving after 10PM. It would not make sense for us to try to all drive in together.

Some comments on Clumsy's schedule...
I have a feeling The Very Best and Damn Funk may switch places though. I know it goes against Sasquatch rules... but the new Very Best album has a song featuring Ezra from Vampire Weekend and on a couple of occasions Ezra has come out and sung live on stage with them. On the very first Very Best mixtape they do a cover/remix of Vampire Weekends "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa." Ezra has also been very open about how much he loves the Very Best and The Very Best were actually just anounced as the openers for Vampire Weekends Hollywood Bowl show. SO, my point is that I really dont think Vampire Weekend and The Very Best will conflict haha.
Also, why put Booka Shade so late? Its weird, but I think they will play around 2:30, like the billing would indicate. Why would they make Booka Shade conflict with A-Track/SMD?
Oh, and I am willing to bet Massive Attack start at 10:30. It will be like NIN/JA last year. NIN 8:30-10:00 followed by JA 10:30-12:00.

That's the way to do Sasquatch, Scott. Also it helps that you can practically see every stage (except the comedy/dance tent) at a time from one of the food areas, so it's very easy to drift and find something that suits you.
Also next to the bigfoot (??? wtf??? wookie) stage there is a little clubhouse thing where they have video games with air conditioning. It seems like not many people ever realize that there is a shaded patio with chairs attached. Nice if you want to get out of the sun, sit for a bit, I've watched a set from there each year.

Sasquatch has a hard time keeping their headlining Comedy Acts, last year we lost Demitri Martin (w/o an explanation either).
I sure hope that the Bigfoot late stage isn't going to be the only stage running at that time of night. If so, it will be a complete clusterfuck in that area, since the traffic scheme forces the entire venue to file by the Bigfoot stage.
I'm sure the WH shuttle will make the appropriate scheduling accommodations, if not, the campground is only 3/4 a mile away from the venue.

I read this in your calm, reassuring voice. I feel better.
So it would just mean that Booka Shade and Deadmau5 would start later and the main stage would still run normally. Ok. I'll relax for now. I didn't even get to the point where I came up with a clever name for my Facebook group.
Haha. Yeah, I think that is exactly what it means. Im guessing on Saturday Nada Surf will be scheduled to end around 10, and then MMJ will start at 10. There will probably be a 2 hour break for the Bigfoot (I miss the Wookie already) and then Deadmau5 will probably start ay 12. Although some people might expect MMJ to end at 12, they will probably be allowed to play as long as they want, like the Cure in 08. The Cure were scheduled to start at 10, and they played until 12:45.

Mark, let's have perspective, the Christmas on Mars showing was REALLY late. And such a side-stage poorly publicized thing that who knew what the hell was going on. If they are actually running a stage that has a published schedule, the WH people will be on the ball.
And it's really not a far walk. And if you're that tired or lazy, hitchhike the mile.
I think with a flask, it could be a quick walk. :)
I sure hope that the Bigfoot late stage isn't going to be the only stage running at that time of night. If so, it will be a complete clusterfuck in that area, since the traffic scheme forces the entire venue to file by the Bigfoot stage.
I really don't see this being a huge problem. If they angle the tent properly, the crowd can cluster to the side instead of blocking the road out of the venue, it will attract people leaving the other stages (not a bad thing in my opinion), and you know most of those PNW hippies will join and dance for a few minutes before just leaving. :)

I'm just grateful they're playing in SF, which is apparently a place he really wants to visit for some reason. :p I think the new album let him down, or he got sick of it too soon or something. I still adore Massive Attack, but I agree that he and I have been drowning in Massive Attack for years. Hopefully Martina will win him over again.

This year's Sasquatch gallery was run much better than last year's :) The organizers provided a list of all the posters and their designer's contact info. I'd be happy to provide this info upon request ;)
The following posters looked really good in person:
Band of Horses
Camera Obscura
Caribou
Deadmau5 (looked much better than I thought it would)
Massive Attack
Midlake
My Morning Jacket (it's sooo cool in person, too bad they're not my cup o' tea)
Neon Indian
No Age
Pavement
She & Him
The xx
Vampire Weekend
Z-Trip
Here are a couple Iphone pics of posters not online in the gallery yet:

Deadmau5 looks less cluttered in person, which allows the little details to stand out.

Anyone here a fan of Mumford & Sons? I've listened to them quite a bit over the past few days and I am getting quite excited to see them.
Also, I have been won over by the new LCD Soundsystem album, so they are now a must see for me. I've heard their solo shows are usually quite long, so it just sucks that Sasquatch will probly only be 50-60 minutes and in the daylight.
