Just like to point out that there are quite a few of us that read these threads and don't post on most of them. And this thread has turned into a bunch of fucking moronic bullshit.

Please try to post stuff that is relevant to some part of the festival. Thank you.

a)How do you know?
b)What do you have to add to the fucking proceedings?

Friday- Jay-Z/Beasties
Saturday - MUSE/Pavement
Sunday - Gorillaz/Thom Yorke

Gorillaz production is massive.....should make for an interesting (or really long) set change.

seriously, tiesto? that would fucking suck. coachella is hip wtf.

hot chip please god not again. 07's set was really good. 08 i saw it passing by. pretty meh

deadmau5 = gimmick

lcd soundsystem - alright that could be there. but not in the sahara

gary numan yeah ok

the sahara will probably look like this:

Tiesto

Deadmau 5
LCD Soundsystem

(Not gonna lie though. Grace Jones and Gary Numan in the Sahara on the same weekend would be really odd.)

i know, i was there
thats why im saying...

doubtful sahara acts should not be in the sahara. it doesnt work well. you can dance in the mojave or the outdoor as well if not better (cause its not made for it). the sahara is for djs and live sets. but live instrumentation doesnt always work (see the rapture and happy mondays)

some of those acts have pretty big productions: Numan and Jones, that I don't think would fit on any stage other then the main or sahara. The subs are too numerous for them to play the main soo.....

That goes without saying but I'm more than willing to put up with a fair bit of BS to get Orbital and LCD all up in that piece. Tiesto can get sodomized with a splintery mixing spoon but the mau5 is doable in a pinch, with a lot of drugs. Like, a lot.

Dr. Lufs-al-ot

This year? No, not for headliners. I picked Muse (who'll be there), The Who (who probably won't), and Daft Punk (who I'm pretty sure won't either). Oh well. I'm gonna come back strong and get all 3 right next year, I promise, you heard it here first.

I swear I really thought you had the headliners right there too Erik. This year just proved a little too different ala 2008.

TeamCoachellaHellYeah
01-18-2010, 05:00 AM
Remember last year's Neil Young rumors? Good times.

No one knows. Neil Young was supposed to sub under a headliner. Maybe it was due to his shows in Canada being around the same time and being unable to coordinate things? who knows?

TeamCoachellaHellYeah
01-18-2010, 05:03 AM
Remember all the years of rumors that never panned out...

Neil Young
The Police
The Smiths
Michael Jackson
David Bowie
Daft Punk repeat performance
Pulp

I could go on and on...

Neil Young was never supposed to headline though.
Didn't Dani debunk the Police before the line up release?
I think the talk came from Morrissey performing and the fact that Johnny Marr was there with Paul Weller.
MJ? Where?
Paul T asks David every single year so there is truth to that (he asks the Smiths to reform every year too).
Daft Punk were asked to perform last year but they said it was too soon.
No idea on Pulp.

TeamCoachellaHellYeah
01-18-2010, 05:05 AM
Dead Weather aren't confirmed... but even if they were, there are plenty of Massive Attack/Gorillaz, Soundgarden/Pearl Jam, even Dirty Vultures/Led Zep situations being discussed, and nobody will ever doubt Jack White's ability to work two shows in three days.

Plus, raise your hand if you wouldn't trade a Dead Weather show for White Stripes. Anyone? Anyone?

Talking Jay-Z is just boring. Most folks on this board don't want this get, he's such a huge star you can buy all any type of ticket to his Staples show (meaning: not a sellout), and we're not big rap folks here. As I've said over and over, it means nothing to me.... except one less big band I'd really want to see. If Jay-Z on the lineup means no Beasties, Gorillaz, Faith No More.... well, that would upset me. Personally. But my tickets are bought and paid for, so it won't get me too down.

Dead Weather are playing. I know that for a fact, they are going to play in SF for 2 nights before Coachella.

TeamCoachellaHellYeah

Headliners are a big deal for me as there is no way I'm going to CA just to see 15 or so 3rd to 4th line bands when I can see them (or most of them) here in OR when they come through. For me there has to be a *big* draw. It was RATM, Faithless and JAMC in '07, Kraftwerk & RW in '08.

Thom York solo set isn't good enough? A rare Gorillaz showing? Grace fuking Jones? Gary Numan? There is going to be enough meat on this line up believe me.

The only reason I worry about headliners is that my friends who I try to convince coming with me aren't at all familiar with the undercard so those big names are really important in that sense. It took a big name like RATM to get most of mine to come with in '07.

I personally have no problem with Jay-Z headlining. Sure, I'd rather have someone else who I didn't just see last year at APW and someone who's playing in LA just THREE weeks before Coachella but to be honest, there are a ton of worst choices out there. Plus I know my friends will be stoked to see him headlining that day. I probably wouldn't watch though. Had a blast seeing him at APW but chances are there's gonna be something else I'd rather see in one of the tents.

I'm going to have the same problem but the undercard will have enough going on to convince my people (Come on guys! THOM YORKE SET!!)

Goriilaz as a headliner is a risk but it seems like people will be into it.....

Jay-z headlining and Beasties as a sub makes more and more sense as we get close to the announcement...

they are both close through def jam old school ties, also Adam is still recovering so coachella will be a welcome back but also they will only have to play for a hour to help Adam so Jay-z is doing them a favor and can close it and bring all his people out to perform and showcase(like prince did in 08).

so if that does come true it would be a very good 1-2...

For all the bitching that's happening about Jay Z, he puts on an incredible show. And if you hate him, then there's one of those rare gaps where you have time to go eat a spicy lobster chili fried burrito or whatever.

Pretty much. but I've been thru 8 of these in my defense and this year seems pretty similar to 2007 when they actual announce that the line up is being released on so and so day. 2008 was a weird year because of the mexican radio thing.

This is all based on 2007 when the LATimes annouced the headliners the night before the annoucement. IF GV decide to leak on their website or twitter then that doesn't mean it will happen like it did last year.

Holy shit, Bamboozle has to have the most annoying webpage ever. TWO media players set to start with Hanson's MMM-bop instantly play when you hit the page, and I couldn't even tolerate it long enough to see where I needed to turn off the second one. Fuck that.

But nonetheless, MGMT wasn't headlining shit from what I saw. It was Paramore and Weezer.

I'm a lurker, I pretty much frequent only to read updates. But I feel I should chime in.

First of all, I'm no insider, but I have a friend who lives in LA, and she randomly told me yesterday that her friend works with one of the booking agencies and she just happened to ask if I heard about how Jay-Z was headlining this year. I said I'd heard rumors, but I also said the lineup had yet to drop. She was surprised, because she was under the impression that it had, and that Jay-Z headlining was already known officially. Her credibility is pretty good, especially considering she was asking me a couple of weeks ago if I was excited about seeing Muse and Soundgarden, because her friend had confirmed them (to which I responded, 'no.') Anyway, this info took me by surprise, and after seeing Monklish confirm it this morning, I think it's pretty much in the bag. Jay-Z is mystery headliner #3, and I'm excited. I bought by tix this morning.

One of the best parts about Jay Z playing Staples a few weeks before too is that it will siphon off a huge number of LA-area Jay Z fans who might have come to the polo fields just to see him without really "getting" what Coachella is all about.

Thus, the Jay Z equivalent of a Tool or Rage fan showing up should be well minimized.

true, and go ahead and terrorize if you want. be bitter about things. it's obviously not getting you anywhere, getting you tagged as a troll by our moderator, and you're going to get banned soon. the more logical choice would be to man up, put the people you don't like on ignore, and chill out a bit man. i could care less, you're just another random, but i'm a friendly person and there are other friendly people on here. you have to learn to pick your battles. arguing with the obvious board troll is not going to garner you anything but it gives him whatever he wants from you. :/

I see the logic there. But aren't the headliners there to generate the cash flow.

Sure, for the Coachella veterans that have been going for years, these things don't matter much. I'd hope it might attract a lesser crowd, that way I can actually get up closer in all the stages and tents during the day. The only cool thing about having a shitty headliner is that it tends to siphon alot of people during the night out of the smaller tents. But during the day its a different story, most of those people that only come for the headliners take up space in the tent for shade thus making the view harder for people who actually came to see the band .

I for one wouldn't mind the polo fields a little more sparse.

I still don't see how GV would want to put an artist out their who will have already hit up all the major cities around the US including the Staples Center in LA a mere 3 weeks before the event. If you read my whole post, I never said I was upset about Tool headlining. Despite many other people's deep disdain for them, I have been a fan for a long time.

Does not change the fact that people on various Coachella related communities were not seriously pissed about Tool headliner (or the way I look at it, tons of Tool fans descending on the polo fields).

Think of it this way. There are only so many arists who are deemed worthy enough for headliner status at Coach. Jay-Z is definetly one of them and he hasn't played here before so it makes sense. Also, if the undercard is as strong as the rumors have it to be, this entire weekend wil sell out. Period. There are thousands of fans who will go for Gorillaz, Beastie Boys, Soundgarden, Faith No More, Thom Yorke, Orbital, and Pavement. I just think GV decided to use their budget across the entire lineup instead of dropping all of it on a McCartney or Prince. And to that I say bravo GV, Bravo. Now if we can just get longer set times for the second and third tier all will be well in the world.

If the undercard is as strong as the rumors have been then, yes, Jay-Z would make sense. But that's a very big "if". For one, many of those undercards you listed could easily headline themselves. Also, it just seems to much of a dreamchella for it to be true.

Plane/hotel/car... what do you mean too many variables?

Well I do this very stupid thing trying to coordinate my plans with other people so I usually end up booking my lodging and such very late in the game. The other things, such as transportation and ticket, I buy early on. That's why this year I decided to just go for it and camp. I'm sure I will be hurting because of it but I thought I'd try it once. Solves my other problem anyways.

Camping was the worst mistake I ever made at Coachella. I did it one year, in 06 and I will NEVER do it again. No sleep, no escape from the morning heat, unsanitary showers, and fucking carny food for an entire weekend. Do yourself a favor and get a shitty hotel room for $120 with a few friends. Then you can get some sleep, shower, and grab a decent bite to eat on your way in. I suggest beers and grub at the Yardhouse at about 11:30. Great way to start your day.

So true, when I go with friends I tell them I'm going where I want to go when I want, if I see you there great, if not I'll meet you at the lightning rod after the final band finishes. Do not be a newbie and stand around with five of your friends saying "where do you wanna go, I don't know where do you want to go?"

I'm SO glad I've never had to fly to coachella.

Eh, it's not *that* bad. I was able to drive to '02, '03, and '04 when I was living in SF, and have been flying in from Boston ever since. One nice thing about flying, especially from a colder city, is that the weather still tends to be awful in mid to late April. So the nice hot dry desert climate is faaaantastic after enduring a Boston winter.

My friends who have scattered all over the place all use it as a central yearly meeting thing now too. Rather than person X visiting person Y, and person Y visiting person Z, etc etc, we all just meet up at a rented house in Palm Springs for an extended Coachella weekend. Nobody has to worry about hosting; everyone has an awesome time.

I'm SO glad I've never had to fly to coachella.

In my experience flying makes the weekend feel a bit more special. Like you're jet-setting around, because you sort of are. And when you're comparing 19 hours in a car or 4 door-to-door with a plane, flying looks great.

Is there anyone else who's finding themselves indifferent to the Jay Z rumors? Sure they're completely unsubstantiated but I'm not batting an eye. It's kind of nuts how worked up people are getting over this. But in fairness, my main interests are in the dance tent. Just curious.

To be honest, I really don't think Jay-Z is headlining. If he were, I would not be too upset.

But when the poster is official, I am nearly 75% certain Jay-Z will not be a headliner.

For headliners I'm expecting Muse, anticipating Gorillaz and am not going to pretend to know a thing after that. Something comes out of left field every year. And usually more than one something.

Tiesto but not PVD. I think the only trance act youll get is Tiesto and his set will be primarily his new more electro'y shit.

If i had to say another trance act id guess Sasha or Ferry although if Coachella knew trance at all theyd get someone fresh like Markus Schulz or Sander van Doorn.

Exactly....him being a "surprise" would actually make the most sense. This way it would give him time to actually sell out the Staples Center thus not fuckin' with profits on that end. I'd think once he sells out the Staples Center...then they would announce Jay Z as the "surprise" headliner over the Beastie Boys.
