I read an interview with Phoenix a little while back stating that they are only going to play music festivals if they are garunteed a spot after dark.

All of your arguing is for nothing. Phoenix will be on the outdoor theatre, probably closing it. If not, the spot before the closer.

Muse with MGMT and Phoenix subheadlining..... now THATS a Saturday!

Hey somebodytoldme, I have a hypothetical question/scenario for you. Ready?

50,000 people go to see Radiohead and the opener is Liars. 3 of those people have to leave before Radiohead goes on because of emergencies. So that means 50,000 people saw Liars and 49,997 people saw Radiohead. Does this mean more people were there because of Liars than Radiohead? By your logic, it does.

You say the majority of people were there for Phoenix, but your math contradicts that. If 25% of the audience left after Phoenix then you can only assume that 25% of the audience was there for Phoenix. That leaves 75% of the audience that stayed and watched Spoon. I could just as easily say the majority of people were there for Spoon because they kept 75% of the audience.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT MAJORITY MEANS?

It's not simple subtraction. Jesus fuck, use some logic. If more than 50% left after Phoenix THEN the majority of them were there for Phoenix.

Yeah but there's people like my friend who watched Spoon but I know he doesn't like them at all and went only to see Phoenix and Passion Pit. The article also suggests that the crowd was more excited for Phoenix than Spoon so does that mean that people sat in their seats showing no emotion for Spoon and could sway the percentile of Spoon fans vs. Phoenix fans? We need more data to straighten out the other variables. Until then, no one wins this mathematical battle.

TommyboyUNM

For once, you're right. The data are inconclusive. We would need to know who was there for Phoenix, but stayed for Spoon.

But I'm arguing based on the 25%. You know, an actual number for our purposes. You're arguing based on assumptions. Therefore, you're the asshole.

I win.

Yes, it does, because it shows that 50,000 people made the conscious decision to arrive at the seated venue early enough to watch Liars entire set. If they had no desire to see Liars, then they would have arrived later on into their set or just before Radiohead went on.

Edit: If 3 people left for emergencies, it still doesn't change the story that 50,000 were there for Liars vs 49,997 for Radiohead. Numbers are numbers, and the majority is equal to whichever number is greater during the act performing at the time.

You're completely excluding other reasons people may show up early.

Maybe they just like seeing concerts. Maybe they wanted better seats. Maybe they were bored.

There's no guarantee that because people show up early for a show which has an opening act that they have any idea who the fucking opening act is and to say that they showed up for that act makes you (1) a complete piece of shit and (2) I hate your guts.

They made the conscious decision to see Liars, yes, but that doesn't mean they were there primarily because of Liars. There are too many unknowns in that case. The most reliable way to know if someone was just there for the opener is if they leave right after the opener. Like the 25% that apparently left after Phoenix and before Spoon.

As a byproduct of your logic, you're ignoring people (in this hypothetical) who may have consciously watched Liars, but were there primarily for Radiohead.

He confirmed The Big Pink... but not APTBS? That is odd, considering they are touring together. And Vivian Girls would be an odd choice of a repeat act. Girls were a pretty safe bet, but its good to hear from a source. And Yeasayer... I would pretty much jump for joy if they were on the line up.

Vivian Girls and someone else said APTBS also as repeats? Unlikely, considering both of their newest albums were met with a lukewarm reception and much less buzz. If anyone repeats this year, my guess is that it'll be No Age due to their proximity to Indio and the strong possibility they'll have a new album out come April that'll be attached with a lot of hype.

actually aptbs' new album got really good reviews a 79 on metacritic the only place I saw that gave it lukewarm reviews was pitchfork but they also compared the album to Jesus and Mary Chain's Automatic and as a huge fan of both bands and calling exploding head "their Automatic" is fucking retarded.

and from what I hear from my Country friends they say that this years Stagecoach line-up is really good . . . . I hope Coachella kicks its ass . . .

And if Stagecoach is April 24 and 25th . . . Doesn't that mean Coachella is April 16, 17, 18 . . . . its almost always the weekend before stagecoach

Friday of 08 was my first day of coachella ever and while the verve and a couple other bands were great, it gave me a really bad first impression at the end of the night. I wasn't expecting Fatboy Slim to blow that hard. Oh well, the next day more than redeemed it.

Aphex Twin pretty much sold the day for me. So did some of the Verve. After that we left. I wanted to stay to see what the deal was with Jack Johnson but we were tired.

Once fatboy became unbearable I wandered over to JJ. It was an embarassingly small crowd and obviously the music was boring. I think there was only one other band playing at the time and it was like Black Wolf Kids something or other, some generic hipster crap so I just ended up leaving before any of the last acts were done and it was the first (and last so far) time I did that at a festival.

Then the amazing Princewerkhead was the next night and I still have no clue why they made it so lopsided. By far the worst night ever of coachella, followed by the best. It was odd to say the least.

I really think they could have made friday night much better by scheduling it differently. They should have just moved some of the good early acts to night like sharon jones, dan le sac, santigold, anything other than what they left us with.

Sharon Jones was at night. She conflicted with The Verve.

And Im sure if Goldenvoice had the power to, they would have had Prince play Friday night. But apparently Prince wanted to play Saturday.

That would have also been great. I doubt either band really cared if they played fri or sat.

Muse's first stop on their U.S. tour won't be at Coachella since they'll be playing the east coast as early as February. Also, Silversun Pickups may just be the east coast opener and therefore, they won't be a repeat act.

Atlanta, GA - February 27th http://www.ticketmaster.com/Muse-tickets/artist/710165
Boston, MA - March 6th

Fuck yes. I'm not even a big APTBS fan but this venue is ridiculously awesome. It's like the Troubadour if you gave it more history, made it bigger and easier to move around in, and made the sound even better.

It's an honor to join the ranks of you Coachella-goers. I've only been out two times but look forward to my third year in 2010 with high hopes that my good friend Jonny will be partaking in the festivities. Based on what I've seen here over some time, I'm weary as to what welcome I'll receive, if any at all, but nonetheless, it's nice to meet you all.

Oh, and p.s., first person who makes a smartass joke relating to "I drink your milkshake" will be on the receiving end of a fine kodak moment, as in my middle finger metaphorically shoved in your face.

Also, those who succeed in not insulting me will be taken into consideration as extras in my next film :)

Oh, and Muse's new album is indeed terrible so here's to hoping Bellamy gets kidnapped by a stalker from the obsessed muselive.com boardie members.

Monklish

Monklish, you are rather correct about that, however, you must take into account that I am rather obsessed with using metaphors at every chance I get...ever since that film I made that had that guy named Tom Cruise in it.

My hero.

Are you alone in that wish? If so, don't worry, D-Day Lewis, a good friend of mine, still sometimes goes into his character of Daniel Plainview, and I have given him the whereabouts of Bellamy's tour schedule, so again, keep those hopes high.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome.

Your milkshake sucks almost as much as your movies.

I would take that as fair criticism if could prove you've seen every film I've made, then write reviews to them all, or at least make valid points which actually make sense - then I may give you the benefit of the doubt. Otherwise, I pity your judging books based on their covers, as in my films.
