Honestly, I wouldn't mind 311. Not because I'm a big fan or anything, only because it could be a good reason to get my friends to go.
Maybe it's not your friends poor taste in music as much as your poor taste in friends.

I can't think of anything worse than being stuck with a bunch of whining friends who only came to Coachella for one stupid band. That would be a long, miserable weekend for all. I would abandon them somewhere in Rancho Mirage.

That's my problem. One of them would whine, most likely because of the heat. My friends listen to hip-hop solely, and they're not willing to sit through a few acts to catch those so few hip hop sets.....

Sucks to be them.

In that case, I certainly wouldn't try to talk them into coming. You don't want to spend all weekend trying to keep your friends entertained & happy. Better to be alone.

I've come to realize that the coachella experience is that much better when you're with a larger group of friends.that's my reasoning behind my mission.

Then try to get some friends who don't suck. That will likely be hard though as it seems highly probably that you suck.
I recommend that you pretend to be somebody else until a better personality presents itself.

Just kidding, yeah he probably could if they wanted him to and I'm sure others on here could make a case that he played too many times already at the Hollywood Bowl in the past year or something.

311 is confirmed for Coachella
and here we've been arguing over whether or not acts are playing Coachella because they haven't been relevant in years..
Speaking of CoS and Coachella, they posted this article about a new She & Him album due out in the spring:
http://consequenceofsound.net/2009/11/27/new-she-him-album-due-out-next-spring/
It'll be nice to see Zooey's pretty face on stage. Sunset slot maybe on the Outdoor Theatre?

Now wait one second here guys. seandlr, are any of your friends nice looking lady friends who might have some attractive qualities despite their music missteps that could lead to something more? If so, I say bring them along. Nothing beats making out under the stars in the Indio desert with the best music playing around you.

She and Him would be mesmerizing at Coachella.
And you can't compare Zooey to Katy.
They're both attractive, but there is just something more Zooey has.
I recently went to a screening of 500 days of Summer with the entire cast and crew. Some dork in the audience complained that in a later scene she is wearing her engagement ring and not her wedding ring and that was a flaw and that he had more flaws he found. The cast and crew didn't know what to say.
Zooey spoke up and said, "The ring was out being re sized, I have very unusually sized hands."
The guy who asked the question didn't know what to say and he responded, "I can't remember the other complaints."
The director spoke up and said, "She has that effect on men".
My sentiments exactly and why she would be perfect at Coachella.
Also, to whoever mentioned that they have to force their friends to go by having bands like 311 play Coachella.
Trust me it's not worth it! Either people get Coachella or they don't.
It's not my job to force people at gunpoint to have one of the greatest weekends of their life.
if they can't figure it out on their own. F*CK EM!!

I wouldn't count Arcade Fire out as of yet...
The Arcade Fire, the acclaimed Canadian indie rock band that exploded onto the international scene with 2003's "Funeral," is nearing completion of its as-yet-untitled third album and plans to return to the stage in 2010. The album, which according to Billboard sources is currently on track for a May release, will be Arcade Fire's first set of new material since 2007's "Neon Bible." The band have not performed publicly since Jan. 21, when the group played at the Obama Campaign Staff Ball at the DC Armory following the presidential inauguration.
While details of the new album are scarce, the BBC revealed yesterday that the band has spent the past six months ensconced in the studio with producer Markus Dravs, who has worked with the likes of Coldplay, Bjork and Brian Eno, and served as engineer on "Bible." According to British musician Marcus Mumford, Dravs has called the band's new songs "better."
Billboard sources say the album will be preceded by a single release earlier in 2010. The band is weighing multiple offers for live shows in the spring, and will likely take a top slot at one or more of the major North American summer festivals.
"Funeral" has already been named one of the top albums of the decade by such varied outlets at NPR's All Songs Considered, NME and Pitchfork, which rated it No. 2 on its list of "The Top 200 Albums of the 2000s." "Funeral" has sold 466,000 copies in the United States and "Neon Bible" has sold 420,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

What are the big summer festivals? Lollapalooza, Pitchfork, Outside Lands. Am I missing any? I'm not sure if Bonnaroo is technically a summer festival, but that might fit into the author's definition of a summer festival.

Yeah I agree with Obzen that Muse and Arcade Fire as headliners doesn't have enough variety. They're both from the same generation of new bands. Iggy will not be playing at Coachella. They are playing in Europe somewhere the night before.

Also, I'm not understanding why people think that their post-Coachella album release date would prohibit their attendance. It's not as if they won't....know how to play the songs.
I just don't think they're likely to start playing them to audiences that size until they've honed them at a few secret shows - or at least in tighter spaces with smaller crowds and less Youtube'ing cameras - for a while. As with Neon Bible, I think their first shows are likely to be smaller charity warm-ups in little schools or churchs around Montréal.

I don't think they're going to test new songs out on a Coachella-sized crowd. Until they know what works and what doesn't, I don't think they'd risk a subpar set in front of a whole festival, certainly not what's supposed to be their big all-conquering return to the fray.
So I'm glad, I'm positively giddy, to have official concrete news about their next album, but I don't think this in any way makes a Coachella set more likely.

Arcade Fire at Coachella would be amazing and fuck anyone that says they can't headline...their crowd in 2007 was nearly double the size of Jack Johnson's.
Whatever, Hot Chip's crowd was bigger than Jack Johnson's. That doesn't mean people bought tickets on the strength of Hot Chip's name.

Arcade Fire are definitely headliners.
Its going to be great when they headline in 2011.

It's not that Arcade Fire can't headline, it's just that I got used to the entire young new band - seminal 80s band - classic rock band thing they've been doing the past few years. I think they have the ability to find great acts to fill all those categories this year, but apparently they might not now with AF in the picture with Muse.

Correct. When Tool headlined it was a week or so before 10,000 Days was released.
Not to mention Coldplay headlining in 2005 a couple of weeks before the release of X&Y

Apparently the Dead Weather have sold more albums than The Raconteurs. The Raconteurs were on the second line. Just sayin.

Arcade Fire headlining = guaranteed worst-selling day and collective WTF in the blogosphere, especially if Muse is also headlining. I would weep for Coachella's reputation, which matters to me quite a bit.
And I really hate that stupid formula of new band, 80s band, classic rock band. They better get off that shit.

No way, the Arcade Fire day would be far better received in the blogosphere than the Jack Johnson and Killers days. It's the blogosphere that ejaculated over them so hard in the first place. And they have crazy fans that will travel from all over the world to see them headline Coachella.

Yeah I'm not disputing that they have a fan base (which includes me) but if our headliners are Muse and Arcade Fire (one not popular at all to general public and one that kinda sucks nowadays) I don't think it will be a well-received lineup. The Killers suck but Macca and The Cure kept the festival legit. I would argue that 2008's headliners weren't very well received and neither would this year's be. Prince was a relief but that wasn't until two weeks before the festival.

you're also forgetting who is also on that poster for that day. sure dead weather could be second line, but there will be two lines worth of bands who have sold more than dead weather, so they would be third line.
you shouldn't compare them to raconteurs since they won't be playing.

You can get away with having Muse AND Arcade Fire headline if:
1. someone huge like the Rolling Stones, U2, or Radiohead is also headlining
2. you are really aiming for budgetchella, where it doesn't matter so much if there's only 40-45k people there a day if none of the headliners cost over a million, let alone over two like Prince or McCartney
psycobetabuckdown
12-02-2009, 03:39 PM
Agreed. I don't know if Radiohead is as big as U2 or the Rolling Stones draw-wise, but maybe.
If budgetchella means they still make a profit drawing 40k people then fine, but isn't that kind of an embarrassment to go from 60k or so to 40k?

Not as big but if 2008 proved anything they helped move tickets for Outsidelands and Lolla.

Yeah they definitely sold tickets in 08 but I would imagine them as a slightly above average draw, not a Rolling Stones omgwtf draw

THIS. I've been meaning to start a thread about this for a long time. If 2009 proved ANYTHING, it's that all you really need one BIG headliner.

Muse is not a weak headliner, they will sell tickets like the Killers sold tickets this year. You may not like the killers or Muse, but they are big draws. They aren't getting their headliners to make you happy, it's to attract the general audience, and I have to say Muse and the Killers do that. Arcade Fire is a great choice for headliner as well, they have a built in audience that will travel to see them. Now pair them up with Pavement on the same day and that will sell more then enough tickets. Shit, might even sell out with that pair. Then for the 3rd headliner let's say Pearl Jam headline, they too have a fanbase that would come out in packs to make sure that day is well represented as well. not saying that all this will happen, but it can, and Coachella would sell more tickets than you are giving them credit for.

what the hell are you talking about? Lolla sold out, Outsidelands was close I'm guessing(i'm not sure). When Radiohead played Coachella in 04 it sold out. Every show they play sells out instantly. Rabid Fanbase man.
Menik we aren't saying they are as big as those bands, but for a festival like Coachella they are a big draw.
TCHY Portishead didn't really sell out a day. they cut off sales for single day passes in 08 in like early Feb if I remember right.
