I caught a SMD DJ set while in London and it was. ON. FUCKING. FIRE. Having seen them perform both now, I'm indifferent. Live sets lend themselves to better light production so perhaps that makes it a tad superior.

Jas doing a DJ set is pretty weak. Now their live show is a whole different beast. Either way I've already seen them twice this year alone so...

For sure my favorite set of EDC, I will see them every chance I get

Wheres the beef?
09-19-2009, 11:53 AM
Their live set has to be in the right environment. I think it is too slow and trippy for a rave but at a solo gig would be cool. I haven't seen a dj set yet.

Sounds like they should close the Gobi on Sunday night??

I am going to have to disagree, they packed the stage they played at EDC and everyone that was there was really into it.

I agree. Their EDC set didn't feel right and ended up kind of underwhelming.

When they played in the Sahara in 08, HHM, and ever other time I have seen them it has been amazing though.

agreed, smd brought it at haunted mansion last year.

I thought there set at Haunted last year and EDC this year were pretty comparable.

SMD was probably one of my fav sets of 08, I'm all for them coming back to coach.

Wheres the beef?

I have a recording from a show in SF when they were touring that is really really good. But, Mattpach, at EDC it didnt feel right at all. And the strobe lights. UUUuuh a little too much.

BRING THEM BACK!

They're awesome live. I've now seen them in small venues twice. The first was in SF (w/ Cut//Copy) right before they headed down to Coachella in '08 and the second time was in Seattle on this past tour (I got a set list). They put on an amazing show every time (the second show was better than the first).

If I am in the NW for Turkey Weekend I plan on driving down to Portland to catch their weekend show there and if I'm in SF over that weekend then I plan on seeing them that Friday at the Mezzanine (again).

Edit:

I want this broadcast:

honestly i don't see them coming back this year. Their live sets are FIRE-among my favorites of any electronic act by far-but their new LP was catastrophic with only a handful of redeeming tracks....just don't see what they've done this year that warrants another coachella performance.

YES PLEASE!!! They should always be welcome in the Sahara.

That's quite an understatement. It was absolute garbage.

It wasn't a total loss. Audacity Of Huge is a pretty sick song with a great beat and there was one or two others that weren't bad. A total loss? No. But nowhere near their first album.

09-23-2009, 05:36 PM
I have no clue why they couldn't release something less bad. Even between the two albums, they released some pretty good tracks that were either b-sides during the Attack Decay recording sessions or just new tracks altogether. "Animal House" was fantastic. "10,000 Horses Can't Be Wrong" isn't bad, but between it and "Audacity of Huge", there's not a lot to find interesting with the new album.

True that.

then bring them back as a DJ set
their DJ sets are amazing!
(ask anyone who went to Lolla, they'll agree)

the sad thing is the bonus disc from temporary pleasure is fucking AMAZING. seriously they could have stripped the vocals off most of the songs with the exception of pinball and bad blood and the CD would've far better. i feel like the vocals on this cd are like mayonaise, excessive and disgusting waste slathered on top of an otherwise perfectly good sandwich.

temporary pleasure should've been 10k horses, synthesize, audacity of huge (instrumental), bad blood, pinball, ambulance, the whole bonus cd, and maybe cream dream/off the map.

anyone got a direct download for the bonus disc? not impressed byTemporary Pleasure, would like to hear some substantial smd to get that bad taste off my tongue.

that's interesting to hear. most people i talk to are underwhelmed by their new live show. the new album is very weak, but i see it as them "getting pop out of their system", so i don't mind cutting them some slack. plus, how do you not forgive the guys who came up with 'sleep deprivation'?

they recently said that they're working on a new album for later this year that's 100% vocal-free techno. that's gonna be something to behold

I guess im one of the few....but Ive been incredibly disappointed both times ive seen them live (HHM 08, EDC 09). Yes, its cool watching them pull switches and run around on analog equipment, and i have the utmost respect for their artistic creativity, but its just too slow when raving and both sets have been incredibly boring. And the setup/breakdown is a killer for momentum.... Im all for a djset though

Oh man. & these guys are just the right duo to bring something like that. The ADSR was so good but felt really disappointed when I heard it's follow-up. Now I'm extremely excited for the next round.

I listened to about 35 minutes of their essential mix and was bored, but I really enjoyed seeing them live. I can see how they're probably more enjoyable in a smaller setting rather than a large rave, too.

i can't really speak objectively about their HHM 08 show, which i experienced in a certain altered state of consciousness, but i did hear that the EDC show was dull.

their show at the henry fonda back in march, however, was brilliant. i was stone sober and dancing my ass off the whole time. so yeah, i guess their live shows seem to be better suited for those smaller venues
