But obviously you're right. Im a stubborn individual, ok?
(still cant forget about the tranny disco. i wasnt kidding about checking it out, sounds like my scene)
Its her job to do so.
Also, what if you had this same attitude about the Killers? Then you wouldnt be all raving mad about them at this point in time now would you?

I am hoping that it's not Muse U2 & Pearl Jam only for the reason that I saw all of them in October. If so then I will probably see all 3, because they are all amazing live. I can't wait.
We are still sorting out our itinerary and haven't got any reservations yet. Still need to figure out where to go after Glastonbury.
here are 3 possibilities
Muse will be awesome on their turf.

See this is what really bothers me. Why will I love it? Why do I HAVE to love it?
You don't have to love it, in the sense that there's no obligation, like we're not going to smash up your hands if you don't enjoy it. However, it's simply that prior experience suggests to us that the chances of anybody not loving it are so low as to be dismissable. So perhaps "You'll surely love it" would be a more appropriate phrasing.
Great songs that generate a lot of energy and demand crowd participation. And charisma is probably the wrong word for what Win Butler has going on onstage, but whatever it is, he's got lots of it and it works.
Also, I can't decide if the Rihanna idea is awesome or terrible.

This. Kaisers are hit and miss though. I actually did enjoy Travis' set at Coachella but saw them on Jools' program the other day and found it god awful. Finally, the record needs to be set - those who continue to say Stereophonics are the most under-appreciated U.K. band of the decade need to go buy a new set of headphones and listen to the dozens of bands that actually are worthy.

Difficult to know for sure, but I think alot of people will try to get there even earlier simply because of last year's roadblock.
I've been told by someone close the festival that the decision to show all England games was made some time ago. As it pans out, that means it is very likely there will be a knockout game on either Saturday or Sunday. Probably being shown in more than one place.
My guess is that none of the screenings for that game will use a main stage - which is good news for non-England fans.
It could be a chance to see a big-ish act much closer up, because a fair few people will be watching the game. By early Wednesday evening, it'll be known when that following game will be.
(The World Cup is massive over here. We're not a very patriotic nation compared with the US, but once every four years, it goes ballistic. If there is an England game during work time, some employers even set up screens in their offices so their staff can watch. The country comes to a stop. Deserted streets.)

You say that like there's something wrong with being at a bar at 6AM. Actually I remember that only because the game was on a work day IIRC, and most of our UK team failed to show up for work that day.
FWIW, the main reason I don't follow sports any more is that my teams are ones that mostly play in eastern time zones, and to watch the games, I'd have to go to a sports bar at 8:30AM on Sundays. If anyone is interested in the scene that Orbital came from, it's worth trying to find a torrent of "Rave New World".
It's the best music documentary I've ever seen. It was part of high quality science series on Britain's Channel Four, in the mid nineties.
It is hinged around the science and cultural influence of MDMA in the dance music scene, which at the time was a much more underground counter-culture thing. They speak to everyone from Shulgin to the Hartnoll brothers, show somebody 'coming up' in lab conditions, and there's some great footage of parties and gigs.
It's entirely non judgemental or sensationalist. They just try to get to the bottom of why the drug works so well for that type of music.
(MDMA has nearly dried up in Europe. A key precursor has been banned, so manufacturing has collapsed. Sadly the hole has been filled by Mephedrone, which - whilst legal in many countries - appears to be causing users far more problems than the illegal drug it has replaced)

Musical memoirs: Glastonbury ‘86
Let me take you back to the time of the mid eighties when the country was in the same sort of mess as it is now. Miners fighting pitched battles against the police, unemployment through the roof and the decay taking place in every industrial corner of this great country was plain to see by all. Being a teenager growing up in this environment was pretty bleak and as you can imagine an outlet for the mind can take you away from the grind of it all. If your toxin of choice was alcohol you could go down the local off-licences, but if you smoked cannabis or picked the local hallucinogens then you were thought of as a lower class of citizen. Even going to see a local band in town you ran the risk of being pulled by the drug squad, especially when the main band were in town as their fan base was easy pickings.
Being 17 at the time with a love for music, free thought and expression I read about a music festival which could cater for all my needs with a Woodstock vibe about the whole thing. June soon came around and I, with a group of like minded individuals, found ourselves ducking behind hedge rows avoiding farmers hunting down hippies in their land rovers. Two hedge rows later and we were all on the festival site for there were no fortress like fencing and guard dogs used back then. But here is the main point; the police were not permitted to enter the festival. So as you can imagine, this made for some extremely free spirited behaviour of all sorts. In addition to all of this you had the Rainbow Warriors, a group of hippies tens of thousands strong who were always permitted free entry for fear that their hundreds of painted buses, ambulances and vans would clog up the country roads around the festival.
Having been told this festival would have the Woodstock vibe I was in for a bit of a shock, for Woodstock had nothing on this place. This was more like something from ‘Mad Max III’. You can look around Glastonbury today and see flags on the tents to let people know where they’re from, but back then most of the flags would indicate which acid was being sold in that tent (personally I liked the purple circle flag) and I will never forget a very big orange tent to the left hand side of the pyramid stage. It sold cannabis and was run by about 20-30 black boys who had no shame in purveying their pot while punters listened to the bands of the day not more than one hundred yards away on the main stage.
I remember feeling quite overwhelmed and even a little frightened, for this was a totally lawless society right here in the UK. But after the initial impact I soon chilled to the experience.
Dub Reggae seemed to pound out of every tent and the nearest drug dealer shouting at the top of his voice how strong his hashish was. This was one true freedom festival for all walks of life. At first glance you would think this as just a gathering of all the evils of society but this would be so far from the truth. Doctors, firemen, solicitors and even soon to be police officers all enjoyed the wildness that Glastonbury had to offer. For this was a once-in-a-year event, that people could go to, let their hair down and enjoy life without the fear of being arrested.
Even outside the event was a free festival with many live bands including ‘Hawkwind’ playing on the infamous Wanko Riley’s travelling stage. There was also the emergence of dance tents pumping out their repetitive crap, but were all free and all set up in the true festival spirit.
The music on the main stage was astounding with one of the best line-ups that I have witnessed myself with bands like The Pogues , John Martin, Level42, Gil Scot Heron and Robert Cray to name but a few.
But one man on the acoustic stage always stood out and that was Billy Bragg. To watch one man live, with guitar plus amp and songs full of truth, political and social satire of that calibre is quite humbling.
Don’t get me wrong four days of this was hard going and to get back to a warm bed and live a normal life was more than welcome. But you always knew that this was somewhere you could look forward to going.

Boourns
12-19-2009, 03:16 PM
I spent around £200, but £50 of that was on my tent and wellies and another £15 on batteries and ponchos. If you plan on buying food AND alcohol, then more. You can save money by bringing your own booze and food, but five days in a mud pit? Sorry, gotta have a hot meal. I plan on bringing a box of wine for getting drunk cheaply, but will get a few pints of cider to try for the sake of enjoyment.
Lowe's is awesome. Got 20 Duracel batteries for $9.99 from them. Will do that again next year.

The verve were only so-so. Richard's ego is bigger than the band ever was. I'd actually rather have the likes of U2.
But Blur and Pulp for the other nights would be fine. :) Do you think Pulp is big enough to headline? I don't know how popular they were in the UK relative to the states, so I have no idea. I wouldn't see them as "the" headliner, though obviously I'd see them over most anyone else.
Still hoping for an allegedly horrific live performing madchester reunion act. :/

Well, they famously got bumped up to headliner at the last minute in 95 and everyone loved it. One of Michael Eavis' favorite sets. Then they came back and headlined in 98, so yeah, they would in 2010 or '11 or whenever it happens.

For god's sake, I can find something I'd like to eat any day in just one of those Marks & spencer food mini-market places.
Jeff, amazingly the one thing I didn't find is good Indian food in London. Even tried places suggested by Indian coworkers. It was all pretty bland. Salt is not a spice. :/

Okay, so no stones, no Bowie, no pulp, no pearl jam, and no radiohead. No idea who the third headliner will be, even though more possibilities keep getting debunked.

I have got a good list of supplies and tickets that need to be paid for or bought now. I crossed off wellies yesterday and got these.
Neoprene waterproof hunting boots, really comfy. $35 Academy clearance.

Boots that lace up are much more likely to stay on your feet than wellies, if things get muddy (which they normally do).

The Eavis'? They started the hype before the 2009 festival even took place talking about getting bands from every single year and having so many huge bands many would play smaller stages. Once that was said the flood gates were open. You certainly don't hear Coachella do this sort of hype building.
"It's our first 40th anniversary next year, we're talking to lots of bands at the moment about that, and we want to have a band from every year on the Pyramid stage over the weekend."
"And I think we'll try and make a lot of the biggest performances on some of the tinier stages, so we're going to do something really special for our 40th anniversary."
I'm starting to consider going to this festival. I'll probably decide in the next couple of weeks.

The "band from every year" isn't that big of a deal, considering how many bands have played. Doesn't mean a headliner from every year and there's an infinite pool of obscurities.

Fair enough but that ignores the second part of what she said completely.
"And I think we'll try and make a lot of the biggest performances on some of the tinier stages, so we're going to do something really special for our 40th anniversary."
I'm just saying the hype machine was started by them with their "really special" and big peformances on tiny stages comments.
If we are speculating why expectations are so high it's not like the promoters have downplayed the gig is all i'm saying.

I know I keep hearing this but if I don't go for the music, tell me all the great things i'm going for to make up for the fact that i'm taking a shit in a hole in the ground? Also, what other options do I have other than taking a shit in a hole in the ground? Are there porta potties worth going into at all in the fest or does everyone just shit in the ground? This has really become a sticking point for me. If the lineup means nothing and music is why I tend to go to these fests, what makes it worth shitting in the ground?
Any stories of people slipping into the shitholes?
ShyGuy75

for you, fauxy, nothing will. as previously stated, shitting in the ground, walking up and down 900 acres of hills covered with mud and piss, and having it take up to an hour to go from stage to stage will frustrate you to the point of you wishing you had spent your money on something more your speed.

After reading that description, I really don't know what the appeal is. I think Fax has a point. If you're traveling all that way for a music festival, it's pretty important to want to see the music. Is it something to do just to say you did?

The lineup will never mean nothing; there's always something for everyone. Sometimes it's better than other years, of course. As for all the non-musical aspects, I already did in that tl;dr thread.
In addition to the nasty portapotties and longdrops, there are actual toilets across from the Pyramid stage, but I didn't find out about them until after the fact. Comfortable crappers actually does a good job of keeping their facilities clean. I don't shit in a portapotty at Coachella anymore, either.

Who's actually still in for the group? Faxy, you out? If the group is kinda falling apart then I might skip out on this for SXSW instead. I'm kinda in the same boat as you Fax about my intentions for this trip. I really wanna go some year but maybe it should be when I can convince friends to come with instead of trying this by myself.
Money has also gotten much tighter for me in the past month also due to a death in the family and pulling off Glastonbury is gonna be tough.

I can definitely understand wanting the best lineup possible considering the expense involved with attending (mainly the overpriced airfare) and it'd be perfect to kill two birds with one stone (get unforgettable performances from favourite acts and an experience of a lifetime during the same weekend), but the trick is the lineup isn't revealed until it's too late to attend solely for the lineup. It's a gamble. I guess the question is, which would hurt more: going and the lineup doesn't turn out to be your favorite or not going and it turns out to be amazing? Also, most people attend multiple years regardless of who is playing.
Loved last year's lineup (Blur, Neil Young, Bat for Lashes, Metric, multiple gigs from Emmy the Great!) but it was far from perfect (too many conflicts, Springsteen not my first choice of a headliner, lots of downtime) but it worked out well because I needed time to explore and recharge, anyway.

This isn't turning into a lineup issue for me since I've loved every lineup they've had each year. It's more of an unexpected events/sudden opportunity issue now. I've lost a lot of money recently and now have friends who want me to go to SXSW with them and I can't afford to do both AND have Coachella in between and SXSW will be the cheaper of the two for me. Plus I know for sure a friend of mine can go with me to Glastonbury next year but not this year so I might wait for 2011. I'm just gonna have to wait and see how the next few weeks turn out.
I'd really be super bummed if I can't make it with you guys this year since this year is shaping up to be a fantastic year and THE year to go if any. On a personal note, it was my father who convinced me to go in the first place and since he passed two months ago I kinda feel like I have to live up to my word but shit just isn't working out.

I'm still in though I haven't paid the rest of my ticket deposit. I probably won't do that until mid-Feb.
sonofhal, I am planning on bringing wellies and lace-up boots (I almost always wear lace-up boots anyway). The lace-ups never stay completely dry if I'm having to walk through puddles, so I plan on wearing wellies if it's flooded and other boots if it's not.
Salah, docs are great for boots. Red Wing are too -- most of their styles are overly butch construction worker type stuff but some of the 'logger' lines are good, for example:

Red wings used to be my "walking to class through knee-high snow" boots in college. Not that they're really waterproof.
My favorite boots are fluevog but there is no store near you and they're spendy any how.
