For those of you needing to get Bristol train station on the Monday, who haven't already booked with National Express, you may also want to consider the shuttle run by the festival depending on how flexible you are with timing.

It's a non bookable turn-up-and-go (or queue ;) ) service, for about 10 GBP.

The good thing is that it goes direct to Bristol Temple Meads.

----

For anyone who might have a layover at the railway station, there is a nice coffee bar at the entrance ramp to the station on the right hand side as walk down. Service can be waaay slow, but there's comfy sofas and chairs to flop out on.

There's also a bar directly opposite on the main road. Fairly basic, but another place to while away an hour or two without walking too far.

So, phone situation?

Should I try to convince Verizon to let me internationally roam (hey, rape sounds fun!)

Or, should I simply walk into a dublin local cell phone store and get a throwaway phone for texting/calling/etc?

suprefan
05-16-2010, 11:26 AM
Get the throwaway phone, itll end up being cheaper since you just have to buy minutes. and its not like youll be using the phone all the time while at the fest.

chiapet
05-16-2010, 11:59 AM
Greg, I'm checking on that too. I haven't yet found a throw-away one that has international roaming (since I'm going to be in multiple countries within a couple of weeks). I'm sure it would be cheaper than using your phone if you're making a lot of calls, but would a cell phone you buy in Ireland consider the UK international for roaming?

You should be able to check with Verizon to see how much it would cost just to use your own phone. I use AT&T and the rates are awful, but they do have some int'l package deals that you can apply to reduce the cost of texting and calls. I used my phone lightly on my previous trips (maybe about 60-90 minutes total over several weeks), and the roaming charges were around $100.

Boourns
05-16-2010, 12:10 PM
Verizon phones won't work over there. My memory is fuzzy but last year I needed a dualband phone for England and the Czech republic. And holy shit was it expensive. £20 for the phone and £.25 to send (per recipient) or receive a text from the US, .10 within the uk and my phone accidentally turned itself on and dialed someone while in my pocket and it was £1.50 for a one minute call to that US number. And it was more in prague so I just kept my phone off the whole time.

suprefan
05-16-2010, 12:13 PM
Yeah, in Mexico, my phone rang, and they charged me $1.00 for not even picking up the phone. Texts were 50 cents each. And bummer for Verizon not liking its phones to go to other countries.

paulo999
05-16-2010, 12:30 PM
I'll see how much I can help here.

A Verizon/Sprint phone may work in the rest of the world if it also supports GSM. AT&T & T-Mobile users don't have to worry, their phones use the global standard.

Whether you use your US telco, or a SIM from a non-UK country (e.g. Ireland), the key thing is that your provider has a roaming agreement with Orange. Orange do the onsite masts, and last year it was nearly impossible to use a phone without having Orange connectivity.

If you buy a SIM / phone in the UK, it's easier. You can specify Orange, so that problem goes away.

Note that, unlike the US, you are not on a pan-continent deal. If you get a SIM in Ireland, you'll be on 'roaming' rates in the UK. If you get a SIM in the UK, you'll be on roaming rates outside the UK... etc etc.

As for choice of handset... the lower spec (longer battery life) the better. The free charging facilities at the festival aren't particularly convenient. You may need to queue. You *will* have to sit with your phone whilst it charges. All in all, it's wasted festival time and best avoided if possible. (Some market traders will do a charge unattended for about 5 GBP.)

Yea I'm probably not going to buy a pre-paid for that reason... (roaming outside of the UK). Will probably just use my iPhone w/ AT&T and use it sparingly. It comes in handy for checking email wherever wireless can be found. And the battery life is not too bad if you disable the unnecessary services (data, GPS, etc, which you'd want to do anyway when roaming).

paulo, is there typically enough sunlight to bring a solar charger for a phone?

I've not had personal experience of solar charger, so I'm not sure. Some days are sunny, and it's the longest daylight of the year (about 16 hours)...

but... it's not desert strength sunshine and my question would be the practicality. You'd need a backpack panel, and I don't know how much they deliver. (Leaving a panel & phone unattended at a tent isn't a good option.)

They may, for all I know, work fine, but I'm sceptical.

Given that an iPhone, in my experience, will just about last a day at the festival (if it has to thrash to find the mast, as it may well do, it eats more juice), I'd consider getting a chunky external battery pack. I think there's one available in the US that's 5000mAh... about 3 times the capacity of the integral battery. Might just see you through.

chiapet
05-16-2010, 01:19 PM
Hrm... mine lasts around 3-4 days if I have data, 3G, & GPS disabled (2 of the 3 need to be done anyway or the data charges will be awful). The solar chargers don't need it to be warm or anything like that -- but cloud cover could be an issue. I'm not too worried about it, part of vacation is getting a break from the phone ringing all day. :)

chiapet
05-16-2010, 04:01 PM
Travel insurance does not seem to apply for the volcano at this point -- at least from what I'm reading, the airlines are not liable for travel interruptions since it's weather/natural disaster, and most of the travel insurance agencies are not paying out on policies purchased for travel after April (initial eruption, ie, it's an expected risk now).

That said, I just booked my flights. And am already having second thoughts as I did a round trip back from London rather than flying back from Denmark (was significantly cheaper). I guess though I'd only be fucked if air travel from Scandinavia is blocked but UK is not.

I am more worried about getting there, than getting back.

Due to my schedule with ferries and trains and such, once I'm on the ground, I am totally not concerned...

If I get stuck there, well, I'll just see if I can discern how long the wait is gonna be, and either spend my time drinking in Dublin, or take a ferry to Iceland (totally dead fucking serious) and explore/take pics for a day or two...

I'm not toooo worried about getting there, because I'm booked to fly on Friday night. So I'd find a way to get there before Glastonbury, it would just become a matter of how costly it would become.

But I absolutely have to be back at work on July 12th and I'm scheduled to fly back on July 11. :D And I will be out of vacation time. Guess worst case, I crash at a coworker's place and work from London for a week without my laptop. Which would be interesting.

I'm sure what is offered varies quite a bit from airline to airline, but yes, since they are cancelling the flight, they would give you a refund for the unused portion of journey. I've heard that some airlines (like VA & BA) are still putting customers up if they expect a short delay -- ie, if it's a several hour/less than overnight stay, they'll give you vouchers for food at the airport, and if it's an overnight delay they'll put you up at a hotel.

My main concern is multi-day delays and just the general unpredictability of the situation.

I don't think you'd mind at all not having a phone. Each time you want to tweet something, take a picture instead. You can always post them all on twitter later. :)

For me not having a phone (and even not really using my camera) means seeing a lot more, actually seeing I mean.

The downside is that I've come home from my last few vacations with almost no pictures (whereas I used to take hundreds per day and then sort them out later). I'm going to try to take a lot more pictures this time. :)

I whole heartedly recommend Berlin if you find yourself on that trip. Also I really liked southeastern Germany, Rhine Valley near/in Black Forest country. There is not tons to "do", but it was beautiful and people were so friendly. Spent every day hiking, eating, and drinking. (Not necessarily in that order). Thanks for the URL. I had been looking for that earlier and couldn't find it. Just to set expectations, though, ATP NY also uses See tickets. Our tickets showed that status for several weeks ('will be dispatched shortly'). They ended up shipping out the tickets less than a week before the festival. Mine arrived less than 3 days before the festival.

Hopefully it will be better organized -- but the ATP problem was with Sees I believe.

Check here on tix: http://glasto.biz/wp/ticketsregistration/2010-tickets-start-to-be-dispatched/

I wouldn't read too much into that.

The festival use a (generally good) agency with a ticketing system based around typical event processes.

Glastonbury is very untypical, so don't assume from that message that (at this stage) tickets are printed, nor that (as international buyers) they will be posted.

The general rule, at Glastonbury, in the last ten years has been that intl. tickets are always collection.

chiapet
05-18-2010, 02:11 PM
Good to know. I'm not expecting them to arrive in time, assuming that having a print out of the confirmation with ID will be sufficient.

paulo999
05-18-2010, 02:22 PM
I should qualify that as being a generalisation.

For the purpose of making critical plans, I'd strongly recommend getting a definitive view. If you are told it's collect, then everything should be fine, just bring all/any documentation.

If you are told they will be posted to you, and you want to run with that, then you need to be *very* on their case about that happening in time for your travel plans.

That said, if they really fuck up (e.g. not send when they commit), they generally do try to make sure every genuine person gets in to the festival no matter what. But that safety-net process can be/is arduous, so best avoided.

paulo999
05-18-2010, 02:36 PM
Good to know. I'm not expecting them to arrive in time, assuming that having a print out of the confirmation with ID will be sufficient.

You *might* be better getting them formally switched to collect.

Reason being that if they get posted, then you turn up for a collect, you are in a duplicate ticket process where other safeguards get brought into play. These things *may* take time.

Last year one of the things I had to do was deal with a certain type of ticket issue (not intl. collects!) and as part of protecting from scams, there were processes. Aimed at getting genuine people sorted out, but the processes take extra time.

That's valuable cider & festival time for the person being sorted out! ;)

Boourns

Yea, that's no consideration for me. My interest in S&D is minimal and peaked around 1997 or 1998. I don't actually like what Sasha specifically does.

I sort of doubt I'll see the whole set, but haven't decided whether to start there and move on, or head there towards the end (it seems like the stuff I'd want to hear may be near the end or even in the encore).

Did we overlook the announcement of the Leftfield line-up or just not care?

http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/news/leftfield-line-up-announced

Following our announcement of the return of the Leftfield, Glastonbury's "pop and politics" tent, we're now very pleased to reveal the stage's line-up.

This is what the tent's curator, Billy Bragg, has to say about it: "Leftfield is back after a year's sabbatical and the timing couldn't be better. Come along and take part in our daily debates, stick around to see which songwriters I can pull together from around the site for Bill's Big Round-Up, enjoy some edgy comedy in our Get Up, Stand Up spot and to top it all off, spend the evening listening to blistering live performances from artists with an activist edge. It's all in the Leftfield. The fightback starts here!"

FRIDAY 25TH JUNE

That's until 6am, so you can do both!

So it seems we are all going to be scattered all over during the headlining hours, so we'll have to find an appropriate meetup place for all the latenight craziness.

Shangri-la will be open on Thursday afternoon...other areas still unknown. I propose taking advantage of that and getting a head start.

I assume at least one of the silent discos will be returning this year.

Dear Customer,

We are about to dispatch your Glastonbury ticket overseas to the address you provided at the time of booking. It should be with you within the next 15 days. If you are leaving before that and you prefer to collect your tickets at the festival site then please reply to this email with the word "COBO" and we will arrange this for you. The collection point is open from 8am to 10pm from Wednesday the 23rd June and you will need to provide photo ID when collecting them.

If you would prefer to have your tickets posted then you do not need to anything at all.

I think it's weird how they automatically held mine when all I did was ask if they would arrive in time. It's for the best, anyway, because losing that ticket between now and then would be true suckage.

So if U2 has to cancel, what happens?

14. someone gets added

I think someone getting bumped up is more likely because that's what happened in 1995 (Pulp got bumped from pre-headliner to headliner after Stone Roses dropped) and in 2004 (Basement Jaxx moved from Other Stage to Pyramid when Kylie canceled).

Not really.

Wherever the first show lands it'll be the "guinea pig" show where things will go wrong. Best not to do that before 100,000, foreign staging, tv audience and the world's media.

Better to do that in Seattle/Edmonton/Minneapolis.

Or do some kind of dress rehearsal before Glasto.

But there isn't much of a gap between Pulp and Stone Roses in terms of how "big" they are. Same with Jaxx and Kylie.

Everybody's free to use wet wipes (http://www.pilton.com/pilton/ladiesandgentlemen.htm)

Ladies and Gentlemen of Glastonbury 2010 ... use wet wipes.

If I could offer you only one tip for the festival, wet wipes would be it.

The short term benefits of wet wipes have been proved by scientists; whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

I will dispense this advice, now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your wellies. Never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your wellies until you get there. But trust me, when it’s all over you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much mud lay before you and how fabulous they really looked.

You are NOT as knackered as you imagine.

Don’t worry about swine flu; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to go to the cash machine when nobody else is. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 5am on Sunday morning.

Do one thing at the pyramid stage every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don’t be reckless with other people’s guy ropes, don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Text.

Don’t waste your time on queue jumping; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The crowds are big, but in the end, we all have to eat.

Remember the good bands you see, forget the bad ones; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old wrist bands, throw away your inhibitions.

Shout.

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know which bands to watch.. The most interesting people I know didn’t know after 5 festivals which bands to watch, some of the most interesting veterans of Glastonbury I know still don’t.

Get plenty of water.

Be kind to your cars, you’ll miss them when they won’t start.

Maybe you’ll get back stage, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll take children, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll walk around at 4.00am, maybe you’ll dance in the Dance Village on your 75th wedding anniversary.

Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself, either.

Your choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your flag, use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.

Dance.

Even if you have nowhere to do it but in the the Silent Disco.

Wear the head phones, even if you put them on backwards.

DO NOT read direction signs, they will only make you feel confused.

Get to know where your tent is, you never know when it’ll be gone for good.

Be nice to your neighbours; they are your best link for orientation and the people most likely to stick with you in a flood.

Understand that bands come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on.

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography in lifestyle because the more days that pass, the more you need the people you knew when you arrived.

Visit the stone circle once, but leave before it makes you hard; jump in the mud once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Walk.

Accept certain inalienable truths, ticket prices will rise, festival goers will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize that when you were young the music was better, festival goers were friendlier and everyone respected the farm.

Respect Worthy farm.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you.

Maybe you have a gazebo, maybe you'll have a six birth tent; but you never know when either one might be under six feet of water.

Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time it’s Sunday, it will look like shi*

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it.

Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing a contact lens from the mud, wiping it off, spitting on it and sticking it back in your eye for more than it’s worth.

But trust me on the wet wipes.

Kele (he of Bloc Party) is doing an instore on the Mon night (21st -7pm) at Rough Trade East, so this might be a cool place to meet up and get your tents etc (or I can meet you earlier and you can drop them at your rooms).

The way the instores work is wristbands will be given out to people who buy the album (it's released that day). If any are left, they are given out an hour before the show. I'll probably buy a copy to ensure entry.

It's also a nice area for a curry (right next to Brick Lane) if anyone is so inclined.

NEWs AT LAST - from U2.com

25 May 2010
Bono has now been discharged from Ludwig Maximilians-University (LMU) Hospital in Munich where he underwent emergency surgery on Friday, following a back injury. In order to fully recover, he is under doctor's orders to start a rehabilitation program and to recuperate for at least eight weeks.

Dr Muller Wohlfahrt confirmed, 'Bono suffered severe compression of the sciatic nerve. On review of his MRI scan, I realized there was a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc, and that conservative treatment would not suffice. I recommended Bono have emergency spine surgery with Professor Tonn at Munich's LMU University Hospital on Friday.'

Professor Tonn, who carried out the operation, added, 'Bono was referred to me by Dr Muller Wohlfahrt late last week with a sudden onset disease. He was already in severe pain with partial paralysis in the lower leg. The ligament surrounding the disc had an 8mm tear and during surgery we discovered fragments of the disc had traveled into the spinal canal. This surgery was the only course of treatment for full recovery and to avoid further paralysis. Bono is now much better, with complete recovery of his motor deficit. The prognosis is excellent but to obtain a sustainable result, he must now enter a period of rehabilitation'.

Dr Muller Wohlfahrt continued, 'We are treating Bono as we would treat any of our athletes and while the surgery has gone very well, the coming weeks are crucial for a return to full health. In the next days, he will start a light rehabilitation program, with increasing intensity over the next 8 weeks. In our experience, this is the minimum time.'

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

And news about the tour...

Speaking at the LMU University Hospital in Munich, Paul McGuinness has confirmed the postponement of 16 shows on the U2360° Tour from Salt Lake City on June 3rd, through to New Jersey's Meadowlands Stadium on July 19th. Tour Promoters Live Nation are now rescheduling those dates.

Paul McGuinness said, 'Our biggest and I believe best tour has been interrupted and we're all devastated. For a performer who lives to be on stage, this is more than a blow. He feels robbed of the chance to do what he does best and feels like he has badly let down the band and their audience. Which is of course nonsense. His concerns about more than a million ticket buyers whose plans have been turned upside down, we all share, but the most important thing right now is that Bono make a full recovery. We're working as fast as we can with Live Nation to reschedule these dates.'

Shitty. That was the only way I'll ever see u2 because their tickets are too hard to get and it would have been a unique chance to see them without the crutch of a trillion dollar claw or similar spectacle.

I hope all the spiteful douches rejoicing realize that a band that doesn't exist anymore or an artist with medical issues is not going to immediately pull back together and get tour ready with a few weeks notice to save the day. No Bowie, no Pulp, no Stone Roses, no Zeppelin, and the Stones could still be uninsurable for all we know. Most likely dizzee gets bumped up, so nothing is gained.

I pity the Eavii on trying to replace u2 because without them, the lineup isn't that different from usual; good but standard glasto fare, so it's going to be one hell of a challenge and whatever happens is going to upset a lot of people.

Eavis does have 4 weeks to put something together.

Page/Jones/Plant/Bonham Jr. each have a couple weeks clear before Glastonbury. Plant desire to be in LZ for one night is the big question.

Rolling Stones with Mick Taylor could be very interesting. Jagger/Richards/Watts are easily insurable with guitar #2 being a wildcard.

I'm going to trust that they work something out, because (even if I don't necessarily want to see all the headliners), that would be an exceptionally weak headliner set for the 40th anniversary.

For perspective, Roskilde is having their 40th anniversary, too, and they managed to book like 7 acts that could have / have been headliners at any of our festivals.

DIZZEE RASCAL

The rapper is immediately below U2 on Friday night's main stage line-up and could now be promoted to the top slot, as Basement Jaxx were when Kylie Minogue pulled out in 2005.

His new single is on course to become the fourth number one to be taken from his latest album Tongue N Cheek.

He is a crowd favourite and there are no barriers to having a hip-hop headliner after Jay-Z's trailblazing set in 2008.

KINGS OF LEON

The Tennessee band's headline slot at Glastonbury in 2008 catapulted them onto the A list.

Since then, they have become bona fide stadium-filling, multi-million-selling stars.

They are already playing at Hyde Park in London on Wednesday 30 June - three days after Glastonbury ends, with a space in their diary during the festival itself.

ROLLING STONES

Michael Eavis has been trying to bring two bands to Worthy Farm for years, if not decades - U2 and The Rolling Stones.

Now U2 are out of the equation, he may turn to the wrinkly rock legends to have headliners of equal star power.

But The Stones have never done festivals and are not in tour mode.

LED ZEPPELIN

Led Zeppelin never played Glastonbury and have only played one date in the last 22 years - at the O2 in London in 2007.

Asked on BBC 6 Music whether he would rule out the possibility of filling in for U2, guitarist Jimmy Page replied: "I never ruled anything out in the future, from the O2."

Singer Robert Plant may be more difficult to convince.

KYLIE MINOGUE

The pop diva was due to headline five years ago, but withdrew when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She could finally appear on the Pyramid Stage this year and has a new album to promote. Aphrodite is released on 5 July, just a week after Glastonbury.

But her last tour ended in October 2009 and activating the intricate Kylie gig machine would be a big job.

SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY

The Beatles legend headlined Glastonbury with a crowd-pleasing hit-filled set in 2004.

This year, he has gigs in Glasgow on Saturday 26 June and in London's Hyde Park on Sunday 27 June. But there is a gap on Friday 25 June - the night U2 have vacated.

JAY-Z

It is two years since the controversy over whether the New York rap giant was suitable for a headline slot at the festival.

Oasis star Noel Gallagher said hip-hop was "wrong" for the event but Jay-Z stole the show and blew his critics away.

This year, he is playing several European festivals, including Isle of Wight, Wireless and T in the Park - but nothing on Glastonbury weekend.

Paul McCartney = doubtful. Oasis was mentioned for other reason. Naaah, they won't reunite for this also. PM or Oasis will be so 2004.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa228/soundcontent/447x324_gorillaz_1.jpg

We're very pleased to announce that the Friday night Pyramid Stage headline slot which U2 have been forced to vacate will now be taken by Gorillaz, who called offering their services once the news about U2 had broken.

Said Michael Eavis: "This is going to be Gorilllaz' only UK festival appearance, and it'll be a massive audio visual spectacle which will really ignite the Pyramid on the Friday night, with Muse, then Stevie Wonder to follow.

"I'm very excited about Gorillaz' show coming here because they're so open to guests and collaborations. The alchemy of Friday's show is going to be astonishing: a perfect, contemporary way to kick off the 40th anniversary celebrations.

"I am so grateful for the enthusiasm of the media and the whole of the music industry for their willingness and eagerness to support us in what could have been a crisis."

Said Murdoc from Gorillaz: "We're like some great big horrible warship pulling in to the Bay of Glastonbury to save the day. It was us or The Beatles and they split up years ago. The previous soldiers got pulled from duty last minute so it's up to my Plastic Beach naval cavalry to sail in and sort the battlefield out. I can assure you though, I'm bringing extra troops. Loads of them. Glastonbury will be ours…cutlasses drawn, trumpets ready. We're coming in…"

Trust me, you have never ever seen guys on stage in sailor outfits performing a bunch of songs in a row like this. I hear they are working on an innovative video system that will allow, at times, the very title of the song being played to be displayed behind the band while the song is playing! It's a concept so revolutionary that we are preparing to shut down every one of the 300 other stages and declare a form of "soft martial law" across the farm to allow all the other festival attendees the option of only attending this one performance that they may not even enjoy. Excelsior!"

Damon gave an interview today on BBC Radio One after they broke the news of them as the replacement. It was a great interview and Damon is as humble as he is socially awkward. Hats off to him being the first person to headline Glastonbury two years in a row (Blur). He also talked about how much they enjoyed Coachella. And also how nervous he way / is when they perform live. He proclaims that they are a "young band...er....a very young band that is filled with old people" haha

As much as I can say I was disappointed by their Coachella set, listening to them on Radio One this morning brought back some awesome memories. Have fun everyone

http://www.digitalspy.com/music/news/a222164/albarn-wants-reed-for-glastonbury-set.html

Damon Albarn has confirmed that he hopes to get Lou Reed to join Gorillaz on stage at this year's Glastonbury.

The Blur singer's animated band replaced U2 as Pyramid Stage headliners for Friday, June 25, after frontman Bono was forced to undergo back surgery.

Of filling in at the last moment, Albarn told BBC Radio 1: "I was surprised and a bit nervous. I appreciate that it's a big deal but I think we can pull it off.

"Obviously it's a great shame for U2 that they can't do that. I know that they were really looking forward to playing that gig. They've never done Glastonbury. It's magic, Glastonbury."

He added: "It's definitely magic in so many ways. I just hope we can convince Lou Reed and he grasps that it's a real privilege to get the chance to do it. Then we'd have a complete house and that really would be amazing."

Reed, who appears on Gorillaz track 'Some Kind Of Nature' on new album Plastic Beach, played Glastonbury with the reformed Velvet Underground in 1993.
