Pavement To Reunite Fall 2010?

Pavement
According to multiple sources, it appears that legendary indie rock heroes Pavement will reunite! While details are shady at the moment, both Pitchfork.com and Brooklynvegan.com (amongst others) are reporting that Pavement is set to play at least one (maybe up to four) shows at New York's Central Park SummerStage at the end of September 2010. Clearly this is a long ways off and we'll be sure to keep you posted on developments over the next year! Talk is already starting to spread about Coachella, All Tomorrow's Parties and more, we'll keep you posted.

Pavement played their final concert at London's Brixton Academy on November 20, 1999.

My guess is that they are about a 99% lock for Coachella. I think they are one of Paul T's favorite bands, and the $'s they would make from Coachella should make it very hard for them to turn down.

Given what the band members are saying, this thread can probably be moved to Line-up/Artists section.

Question: for someone who spent most of the 90s listening to jazz and opera, where should I start with their catalog?

I'm personally in favor of them booking one headliner each year that I don't like. It gives a chance to see some other very cool shit on the smaller stages at night. I thought Gang Gang Dance was awesome last year, and I wouldn't have seen them if the Killers weren't playing the main stage at that time.

Iconic `90s indie rock band Pavement to reunite

The Associated Press • September 17, 2009

NEW YORK — Pavement, one of the most influential indie rock bands of the `90s, will reunite.

The band’s label, Matador Records, announced the reunion Thursday, confirming long-rumored plans. Pavement will reconvene for a tour — and only a tour — to begin Sept. 21, 2010, at Rumsey Playfield in New York’s Central Park.

Though not hugely commercially successful, the California-based band is widely credited for its influential low-fidelity sound and ramshackle artistry.

Pavement broke up in 2000. Several of its members have since released solo material, most notably its lead singer and songwriter, Stephen Malkmus.

No other dates have been announced.

How would this day look to everybody....

The White Stripes/Iggy & The Stooges/Pavement

I'd consider skipping unless it was a Saturday and the other two days were solid, just like this year with the weak top tier on Saturday. I am curious to check out Pavement, though.

And since the following reunions all got the number two slot: Iggy & the Stooges, Pixies, Bauhaus, The Verve, Portishead (top for a while), Love & Rockets, My Bloody Valentine, then Pavement would easily, as would Blur and Pulp. But Neutral Milk Hotel or Slowdive or Ride would get #3, the Libertines would get a Leonard Cohen slot, Curve would be low like Swervedriver. This Pavement reunion is a huge deal for a lot of people, it's basically the second-coming of Jesus or Xenu for the indie world.

rage patton
09-17-2009, 11:07 PM

09-18-2009, 12:12 AM
I saw the White Stripes and while it was enjoyable, it wasn't that impressive. A damn good time, but short of amazing. Of course, this was at the Greek, which is not an appropriate venue. Seeing them indoors in a sweaty pit or at a festival would be much better, right?

I should have skipped Death Cab at Coachella last year and met up with some people I knew instead...I think they were waiting for Islands after seeing Hot Chip. But since Scars of Broadway messed up the scheduling in the Mojave, seeing Islands would have meant missing Kraftwerk, which I would not have done, but that bit of socializing would have been better than Death Cab. But I'd probably still have my camera and then I could say I went St. Vincent->Kraftwerk->Portishead->Prince without that Death Cab blemish. Kind of like hearing that one song from Enter Shikari totally sticks out in the Emmy the Great->Enter Shikari->Yeah Yeah Yeahs->Bat for Lashes->Nick Cave->Blur sequence.

I read somewhere (probably the Rolling Stone article) where it says that Pavement have been propositioned as headliners for Coachella in the past. Now, I'm not trying to say they will headline, but I think in recent years we have seen that headliners don't always equate to what we expect. I think at this point, we should all prepare ourselves of the possibility of them having their names in huge font at the top of a day and then we can have the expected argument of "They can't sell a ton of tickets!" with responses of "But Jack Johnson and The Killers headlined!", etc etc etc.

My personal feeling is that if Coachella is their ABSOLUTE FIRST reunion appearance, it will sell tickets.

On Pavement playing: I'd more likely imagine Arcade Fire headlining with Pavement as the subheadliners. That'd be extremely appropriate.

On the Pavement presale ridiculousness: Think of life and how it can change drastically in one year's time: You could die, you could get someone pregnant/get pregnant and have your baby due on the show's date, you could lose your job and be homeless on the streets, you might have to move to a different part of the country... whatever you can imagine basically.

This whole presale thing for the Pavement shows is dumb. One presale sells out, a new date pops up. It sells out, another pops up. Why don't people just wait for the general on-sale so they can pick whichever date they want? And I thought we were bad about Coachella...

Agreed, Frank. I get the impression that most of the people who are assuming that Pavement would be good headliners have never actually seen Pavement. They're fun and they certainly rock live, but it's not a headliner-style show by any means.

Pavement was on right before the headliners Sonic Youth at Lollapalooza '95 and completely overshadowed them at the Shoreline Amp...just saying. I do agree that they are solid sub-headliners.

soooo...back to my original prediction:

Faith No More --> Pavement --> Muse on Friday....

Woh woh woh. If Faith No More play Coachella... they will be 2nd billed. They won't headline... but they sure as hell won't be 3rd billed.

Now, I have accepted that Pavement could be 2nd billed (I still think it is too high for them), but even claiming they could possibly headline is absolutely rediculous. So, here is a possible scenario for next year...

White Stripes/Pavement
Muse/Faith No More
David Bowie/Massive Attack

I like the looks of that. Seems realistic as well.

Nice to see you back Omar, I was wondering where you have been.

As for this... what part are you oposed to? Faith No More playing in general? Or just the notion of FNM playing before Muse? Thinking of realistic headliners for next year... the only bands for FNM to sub for next year that would make sense would be Pearl Jam or Muse.

it'd be funny to see hardcore fans of both bands camping together to get rail though.

Is anyone feeling kind of warm and fuzzy inside that we're already arguing about headliners and subheadliners a good 3 or 4 months earlier than we usually do? Let's all thank Pavement for that. Good to see everybody back, too!

True. Both bands do have a hardcore fan base. Having two crazy fan girls for each, Mike Patton vs. Matt Belamy (sp?), battling it out would be pretty damn entertaining.

I don't know though... I just have a feeling a Muse/FNM (although I would prefer a FNM/Muse) combo would work. Well, at least better than the alternatives.

I'd love to have FNM on first so Patton could take the piss out of Muse during the set.

I thought Mike Patton was going to rip on Oasis for cancelling at Rock En Seine. But nope. In fact, he didn't make fun of ANYBODY at Rock En Seine. Not even the audience. Patton asked "Who else did you guys see today?" Aftr undiscipherable screaming, Roddy chimed in "I saw Joy Division were playing at the stage over there." He was refering to The Horrors. That is more of a compliment really.

At Reading and Leeds they worked in a mini-cover of Lada Gaga's Pokerface though. They did it in the middle of one of their songs... don't know which one.

Didn't they just sell out four shows at a 5,000 capacity venue in NY?

actually the order of that show was Sonic Youth/Hole/Cypress Hill/Pavement/Elastica/Beck/The Jesus Lizard at the show I went to no one was there for Sonic Youth, I thought that sucked, but they were pretty fucking good.

Yeah it's a bigger deal than the MBV reunion but not by a whole lot. The way the news came out was a bit different. But I disagree with it being bigger than the Pixies.

09-19-2009, 12:39 AM
Well the Pixies played a big venue in every major and minor market in America, presumably Europe, too. That must've helped.

So for the first reunion tour after Coachella, LA got two nights at the Greek. I think Pavement will play somewhere like the Greek in addition to Coachella, too.

Oh yeah definitely not bigger. At first I thought they would be at the same level, but I think Pavement won't have the same luck playing outside major cities.

But the Pavement tour is being touted as a 2010 World Tour. I don't think they're planning on doing anything after the year ends in 2011 or beyond as this is obviously a money making tour, so Coachella 2010 is the only possibility.

sonofhal
09-19-2009, 08:47 AM
I thought Malkmus wanted to write and record the 5th Jicks album before the Pavement reunion shows, hence the first dates announced being so far away. I'm not saying it won't happen at Coachella in 2010, but at the moment, anything is possible.
