Nominations for the Primetime Emmys were announced today. The complete list is far too long to paste in here. I mean, Outstanding Hairstyling For A Multi-Camera Series Or Special? A partial list is below.

Thoughts on the nominees? Who was snubbed? Who shouldn't be there?

BEST COMEDY SERIES
Entourage
Family Guy
Flight of the Conchords
How I Met Your Mother
The Office
30 Rock
Weeds

Family Guy in best comedy series? I'm assuming that networks have to submit their shows for consideration? If so, submitting Family Guy in this category was a gutsy move that paid off. Nice to see Flight of the Conchords recognized! As always, nice to see 30 Rock and The Office in there.

BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Jemaine Clement, Flight of the Conchords
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
Tony Shalhoub, Monk
Charlie Sheen, Two and a Half Men

Very nice to see Jemaine Clemente and Jim Parsons recognized. Big Bang Theory is comfort food for sure, but I just love Parson's dry delivery of his punchlines.

BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Christina Applegate, Samantha Who?
Toni Collette, United States of Tara
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, The New Adventures of Old Christine
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Mary-Louise Parker, Weeds
Sarah Silverman, The Sarah Silverman Program

This is still Fey's to lose. Don't think they've fallen out of love with her yet.

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men
Kevin Dillon, Entourage
Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother
Jack McBrayer, 30 Rock
Tracy Morgan, 30 Rock
Rainn Wilson, The Office

Probably Harris' to lose, but it would be fun to see Tracy Morgan take this one.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Kristin Chenoweth, Pushing Daisies
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Elizabeth Perkins, Weeds
Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live
Kristin Wiig, Saturday Night Live
Vanessa Williams, Ugly Betty

Nice to see the SNL ladies get recognition, but I think the SNL love will go to Fey. Also nice to see Jane Kakowski get a nom. Her great comedic work often gets overshadowed by Tracy Morgan and crew

GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Alan Alda, 30 Rock
Beau Bridges, Desperate Housewives
Jon Hamm, 30 Rock
Steve Martin, 30 Rock
Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live

GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Jennifer Aniston, 30 Rock
Christine Baranski, The Big Bang Theory
Tina Fey, Saturday Night Live
Gena Rowlands, Monk
Elaine Stritch, 30 Rock
Betty White, My Name Is Earl

There are some seriously talented women in this category. Fey's biggest year ever, though, so she's got this one.

BEST DRAMA SERIES
Big Love
Breaking Bad
Damages
Dexter
House
Lost
Mad Men

Nice to see Big Love get some... love! As per usual, Friday Night Lights is no where to be seen.

BEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall, Dexter

Flight of the Conchords for Best Comedy is a major win. Family Guy got a nod in the same category, though, so it takes away from my excitement.

Of course not, NBC hates Friday Night Lights. All they care about is that fucking 30 Rock shit, the head dude said so himself.

Rainn Wilson should be nominated for best actor in a comedy series, not Steve Carrell.

I searched the whole page for the words "Party" and "Down", and they were nowhere to be found...so I must assume these are last year's nominees.

Jemaine...that's pretty cool.

Oh, and where the fuck is "East Bound & Down" too?

Aw. No love for the criminally under-appreciated Mary McDonnell?

There were saying something about how they nominated more shows in each category to get viewership up of the Emmy telecast.

So, apparently, Family Guy will be winning Best Comedy Series.

They also have similar campaign vids up for Flight of the Conchords and The Office. Nothing for 30 Rock yet.

Cutting edge, innovative, creative, ahead of its time, witty, clever. I'm trying to think of words that don't describe Family Guy.

QFT, mildly entertaining is probably the most apt description of that show.

However, I have recently discovered 30 Rock and I must say, I am very impressed. Via Netflix's Watch Instantly function, I've seen the first 2 seasons and they are fabulous. IMO 30 Rock is a damn near perfect TV show. Kudos to Tina Fey and the crew :D

Goodness. Slagging off Family Guy is almost as popular as dismissing Nirvana on this board.

Listen, I know that Family Guy is popular with every pubescent boy and that you hate how they constantly do flash-backs. I understand that without The Simpsons there would be no Family Guy and likely no other adult themed animation on television. I also fully acknowledge that this last season was rarely very funny and that their writing staff probably needs some new blood.

But, I'll defend this show. Because, when it's good, it's very good. What I think I love about it is MacFarlane's true love-hate relationship with show business and pop culture. You see this in the spoofs, send-ups, references and musical numbers. In fact the musical numbers, I would argue, are one area in which Family Guy is far superior to The Simpsons.

When Family Guy is at its best it skewers celebrity and popular culture figures while simultaneously reveling in the giddiness and glee of old fashioned show business. When they are able to walk that fine line of ridicule and simultaneous celebration of their subject matter, is when the show really works. I think it's much like the tone Mel Brooks strikes in some of his films like The Producers (or even more so in his stage adaptation.)

I thought this musical number from the Emmys was quite funny, but you all probably hated it since Krusty wasn't in it.

It's not that Family Guy isn't occasionally funny, but rather that there's nothing of substance there once you already know all the jokes. There's zero depth, shitty animation, annoying characters and voice acting, weak storylines, etc. Once you've seen an episode 3 times, there's no reason to ever see it again. There's also a lack of quality control. While I'm often a fan of throw everything against the wall and see what sticks type of comedy, Family Guy too often dips into lowest common denominator humor.

Well, considering that 95% of all TV shows blow so much, I can't even get through one viewing, that's pretty damn good. But yeah, FG shouldn't be nominated for best comedy. It's solid B-minus TV.

Again, I'll query why Party Down was not nominated for best comedy. I was rewatching a few eps the other night and heard this line I had missed...

(Henry is sneaking a shot into a non-alcoholic drink at an underage party)
Casey: "Aren't you even going to make that drink a mix-tape before you take it's virginity?"
