I'm not one of those people who really cares when a band member leaves, but this guy shared vocal duties (great voice). I'll miss him :(
Need a new Rapture album soon-ish!

(from pitchfork)
According to an announcement on the Rapture's blog, bassist/vocalist Mattie Safer has left the band (via the Daily Swarm). In fact, he left the band a few months ago, back in early April. "We are sad to see him go but it seems it is the best for all of us," writes keyboardist Gabe Andruzzi.

Safer shared frontman duties with guitarist/vocalist Luke Jenner. On stage, the Rapture maintained a tricky internal dynamic between Jenner's unhinged spazzout presence and Safer's tighter, more contained energy. Plus, Safer was totally the best dancer in the band.

The good news is that Rapture aren't breaking up. In that same blog post, Andruzzi reports that they've been hard at work lately. "Luke, Vito and I have been on a creative tear," he writes. "We've been working out of our little Brooklyn make shift studio, writing, demoing and jamming. I'm pretty damn excited to share the fruits of our labor with you. But its still gonna be a minute before we hit the studio for real."

It's now going on three years since the band released their last LP, the sorely underrated Pieces of the People We Love, so it's good to hear that they're still active. The band will hit Australia for a quick tour this fall.

The full text of Andruzzi's announcement is below.

Dear Fans and friends,

I’ve been meaning to catch you up on what’ s been going on in Rapture world. First off, I’m sad to say that at the beginning of April our buddy Mattie Safer decided to leave the band. We are sad to see him go but it seems it is the best for all of us. Since then Luke, Vito and I have been on a creative tear. We’ve been working out of our little Brooklyn make shift studio, writing, demoing and jamming. I’m pretty damn excited to share the fruits of our labor with you. But its still gonna be a minute before we hit the studio for real. On the other hand, I am very pleased to announce that the people of the great continent of Australia will be some of the first to hear some of our new material live, when we arrive late September for Parklife festival. In the meantime, keep an eye on this blog and another on your neighborhood dance party, who knows maybe we’ll be spinnin’.

Lotsa Love,
The Rapture

I always thought he was such a funkster on that bass.

I loved the first album (more punky) and was mostly meh about the second. Here's hoping that more Luke = more rawk.

This will sound smug, but the rapture were one of my big discoveries... was introduced to them via a sexy italian research scientist in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle, no less. Played it when I got home, and everyone was like "aaaah! Turn it off!!!!". Then 3 years later, the mediocre second album drops and everyone loves them. *sigh*.

Yeah, they need to stop with all the dj gigs and pound out another album already.

Shitty news, I actually liked the dynamic the two singers had amongst each other.

That night was awesome, it truly galvanized my first Coachella in more ways than one. The shrooms also helped..

I even snuck away in-between to catch some of The Gotan Project that evening, a perfect night.

It was such a hot day... I got sun stroke and ended up sort of listening to Rapture/LCD laying on my back in the grass. Worst headache ever. My biggest Coachella regret in 6 years is not watching.

I had a similar experience. Only minus I missed the Rapture completely. I don't know why. Oh well, lesson learned.
