The Strokes' Julian Casablancas to release solo album - exclusive

Singer set to release 'Phrazes For The Young' this autumn

The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas is to release a solo album, NME.COM can exclusively reveal.

The singer is currently finishing working on his first full record outside the band ahead, with a release pencilled for the autumn. A trailer for the album can be watched below.

The record, called 'Phrazes For The Young' was recorded in Los Angeles, Nebraska and Casablancas' home city, New York.

The album was produced by Jason Lader, with additional production from Bright Eyes' Mike Mogis.

Tracks slated for 'Phrazes For The Young', include 'River Of Brake Lights', 'Glass', and 'Ludlow St'.

Casablancas - who issued the illustration pictured - is set to play a "specials series" of US dates, ahead of a solo tour later in 2009.

I'm excited to hear this album, but it's making me think that the new Strokes album is never going to happen.

The Strokes said they were in the studio in April or something. I'm sure they will release something eventually. Hopefully they play Coachella 2010.

Albert's 1st solo record is head and shoulders above anything else the rest of the band has put out since the last Strokes record.

I hope its not the music in the trailer. I'm not a fan of it.

I think the music in that trailer sounds cool. I bet it's even better with his vox box turned on over those shapes.

They've been in the studio since last February 2009. The album is supposed to be released March/April 2010, which makes them a very likely candidate to play Coachella 2010.

Have you listened to the Strokes' first two albums recently? If not, they're definitely worth a Friday afternoon revisit-- those songs show no wrinkles. If anything, they somehow sound tighter now than ever.

Totally agree with this.

(Haven't listened to the single yet but am about to.)

I sooo hope the strokes will be at coachella but it seems unlikely. Alberts albums were really good. Fab and Nikoli were ok lets hope that julians is as good as alberts or better.

The good news: shows in L.A. every Friday in November.

Looks like I'll be heading south next month!

PHRAZES FOR THE YOUNG will be released on November 2 in the UK and November 3rd in the US. To celebrate the release, Julian will play a special series of shows every Friday night in November in Los Angeles. Show details will be announced here shortly.

This.

And does anyone know which is better GA pit (standing room only) or GA floor (seats)?

Ok wait, so the pit means you are closer than anyone else in the venue, and the floor section is BEHIND that. Think about it for a minute. And pit is gone as it is. The downside on ga seats is that somebody better save your seat or its gone...

and how you guys didnt get the kroq email is beyond me

Damn KROQ. Did anyone get any tickets? I had school all day, so I missed the presale. Being KROQ and all, do you think they put all the pit tickets for the presale?

So I'm guessing the general admission FLOOR SEATS are a bit elevated than the GA PIT since that area is behind them..

I think he is probably referring to them having some for general sale tomorow. No pit tickets up for sale right now.

I have a felling the L.A. shows are going to be better than the S.F. show. Julian was saying he wanted to do some really elaborate shows with set/costume changes, I think that is why he is doing a residency. I think the San Francisco show will probably be more of a "normal" show.

Pat24
10-23-2009, 09:13 AM
Yep. Just as I thought, no more pit tickets for the first day. Ah well.

sk8r408
10-23-2009, 10:28 AM
It sucks that they have no venue seating map. You don't really know what you are getting.

http://www.losangelestheatre.com/media/dpphot_aud06.jpg
Is this the pit area? It seems like if you had a seat you could just walk up to the pit if you wanted.

suprefan
10-23-2009, 04:39 PM
Ever think they will probably gate it off and whatnot? I wouldnt think otherwise.

Pat24
10-23-2009, 04:47 PM
Without elevation, that encourages the first couple of seated rows to stand up then..

It's gonna be interesting....

A 40 min something of an album. I wonder how long of a set he'll pull off.

And you got a 4 pack and they are pit tickets right?

kroqken
10-23-2009, 09:18 PM
Actually, I did not get tickets yet, I do not what show I want to go to yet. I do not want to do a 4-pack for his solo show, but I would for a Strokes. I am sure some folks on here saw ALL 8 Morrissey shows at the Palladium, which is even more extreme.

sk8r408
10-26-2009, 10:56 AM
Did anyone else notice that they don't have on sale dates for the last 3 LA shows anymore? I wonder if they are still happening. Maybe sales for the first date were not what they expected. Or maybe they are waiting for the album to be released. I bought tickets for the S.F. show.

Pat24
10-26-2009, 12:52 PM
How are they promoting these shows and album? I'm a bit surprised myself the first show isn't even sold out. The fan base of the strokes in LA is really huge too. I'm guessing KROQ or who ever is promoting this, isn't doing their job well. But it's probably because no ones heard the album yet.

So, the last 3 Palace shows are no longer on Ticketmaster, even the show on the 20th that was on sale yesterday. They say "Sorry, but this event no longer exists in our database." This ticket issue is seriously fuct, and needs to be addressed by someone who knows what is going on.

Yikes.

I wonder what he is playing on these solo shows. Just his whole solo album? I mean if that's it, pretty short show to be shelling out $60 (after fees). Of course you could get the cheaper seats.

Then factor in that he supposedly hit or miss live (he can be really shitty).

He has at least 3 "B-Sides" from the album that he can also play, and maybe a strokes song, something like "L.A. City Cops".

Also, every Stokes show I've seen has been awesome in my opinion. And I've been at shows where other people thought it sucked. I'm just worried that sober Julian might not be as entertaining as wasted Julian.

I wasn't that impressed with the videos I've seen of his solo shows (conan, and Tokyo).

I still wanted to go to this tho, as I've never seen the strokes. I know it won't be the same but I really love this solo album. I just hope he is good live. Plus, this whole fiasco of the disappearing shows on ticketmaster.

What was your original vision for the Strokes?
I realize now, my idea was always to take undergroundish, cool music and make it mainstream. That was my goal, and we haven't achieved it. We got to the top of the underground, but we never got as big as Green Day or Creed or any of the bands we were supposed to be replacing in 2001. So, in my mind, here's still a step to take.

Kinda sad about reading that..

1ST LA SHOW SOLD OUT, 2ND SHOW ON-SALE NOW
October 30th, 2009
After a quick sell out of the first LA Show, tickets are now on-sale at Ticketmaster.com for the November 13 concert at the DOWNTOWN PALACE THEATRE in Los Angeles, CA. RAINBOW ARABIA and THE GROWLERS will be opening the show.

I just checked ticketmaster and there are still tickets available for the first show. Not only are tickets available, they are GA FLOOR tickets. Who ever is running this whole thing really sucks at it. I want to know when tickets for the 27th will be on sale. Maybe after they pretend that the second show is sold out.

I finally got to listen to the album...

I wanted to get it on vinyl, because that is the format I buy most of my music on, but I ended up buying it on iTunes for a few reasons. The first reason was that no record shops had it on vinyl on the release date, so I would have had to wait longer to get it. Since CD is my second choice, I thought about buying that until I realized that for the same price, I can get the album plus 3 bonus tracks on iTunes. So I went with iTunes and the experienced reminded me why I hate iTunes and MP3s. I won't get into all the problems but basically they consisted of double paying, upgrading software, restarting computers multiple times, and very poor sound quality on big speakers. So when I finally listened to the album on my iPhone with iPod headphones, it sounded great.

I LOVE the album. I had already heard 11th Dimension and River of Brake Lights many times, and I still love 11th Dimension. The whole album reminded me of the genius that is Julian Casablancas. It clearly isn't The Strokes but it has the same "Wow this shit is cool" factor as Is This It. It proves that Julian truly is what made The Strokes amazing. After the first listen Ludlow Street really stood out. I love it. I haven't listened to the bonus tracks yet, but I can already tell that this is definitely one of my favorite albums of the year.

A good show.

I'm a fan of the Strokes and thought Julian's solo stuff was terrific. At times, it seemed like theater experience rather than a concert, show-wise. Definitely an enjoyable set.

Merch was ok, all the normal gear and posters. I actually bought the LP there.

Sat in the floor seats dead center...get there early if you want to get close to the stage cause it's actual seating.

Also, while Julian was playing, I thought this would make for a good sunset performance at the Outdoor Theater.

Then theres cd's for 10 and vynil for 15, and then 3 or 4 diff posters. All of which were sick as fuck. that was the thing i was most tempted to pick up. sk8r, from what I can gather from your picture, I think you and I were standing near each other.

Last night I went to Best Buy to pick up a movie and ended up also getting Phrazes for the Young on a whim. While driving home I was so blown away by the first two songs that I knew I would kick myself if I didn't go to the show, so I just ended up going straight to the venue.

I absolutely loved the show, his voice sounded great, the band was solid, the lights were killer and of course the songs are really awesome. I think the venue was probably a bit too big and the crowd was a bit lethargic, also the whole set including encore was less than an hour, which is pretty short for a $33 ticket. I know he only has so much material, but they could have worked in a few more Strokes songs (they did play one, right? I can't seem to remember which, though) or a couple covers. Really minor complaints, though. Overall it was a really great show and will be a perfect festival set.
