Oh glorious day.

Alt-rock kingpins the Pixies will make their live return to the U.S. this fall!

Frontman Frank Black tells SPIN.com that the Boston-born quartet will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their groundbreaking release, Doolittle, by playing the album in its entirety in Oakland, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, New York City, and "maybe Montreal" this fall.

"I believe we're doing the Wang Center in Boston," he says of his hometown gig at the 3,600-capacity venue.

Exact dates have yet to be confirmed. The U.S. tour is expected to follow a run of Doolittle shows in Europe scheduled for October.

>> The Breeders to Release New EP
>> Get Ready for New Pixies Boxset

The gigs will coincide with the release of the Pixies' ambitious Minotaur box set, which will arrive in October on 4AD Records (order yours now via Artist in Residence).

Black notes that 2010 will mark the 20th anniversary of Bossa Nova, and didn't dismiss the idea of performing that album's songs back-to-back, too.

"We don't want to get blood out of a stone or anything. It's not like we're seeking offers -- but the phone just always rings." One recent call was a proposal to open for Neil Young at the U.K.'s Isle of Wight festival this past June.

"You get that phone call and you go," enthuses Black. "Neil Young? Yeah, I'll be there; I'll sing the old songs -- sure!"

U Mass
Crackity Jones

1. Bone Machine
2. U-Mass
3. Isla De Encanta
4. Wave Of Mutilation
5. Broken Face
6. Cactus
7. Caribou
8. No. 13 Baby

16. Nimrod's Son
17. Here Comes Your Man
18. Vamos
19. In Heaven

still listen to the live cd they made available right after the show...and still get chills when i hear the crowd singing the "woo's" at the beginning of "where is my mind".

this performance, with radiohead following, really seemed to put coachella on the map.

the crowd during the pixies was immense:

paulb
07-12-2009, 02:01 PM
why?

suprefan
07-12-2009, 02:18 PM
Cause for them I would rather be able to have the option of being up front if I choose and not hampered by the wristband system. Thats why I went to The Warfield instead in 05, it was a better show anyway. Also, it would be cool to have it in a seated venue. So if its The Wiltern and in Oakland is The Fox or Paramount, Ill go up north.

That's because your into that lining up GA horse shit. I like to get a drink, have a smoke, and conveniently return to my seat. That's why I am really starting to get sick of shows at the fucking Wiltern.

Yeah, I have no way of knowing but my guess is it shouldn't be much longer we have to worry about the Wiltern. The number of acts and actual quality they've landed at that place this year have been mind-boggling, there's no way they even come close to a repeat performance in 2010.

Pixiessp
07-17-2009, 02:30 PM
You would have to line up supremely early to get up close for a Pixies show at the Wiltern. I mean very very early. I wouldn't mind a larger venue but if it is the Wiltern I will be prompt.

I think that the WaMu Theater is too big for them, especially considering Seattle's music scene sucks. I think that we can safely assume that the Paramount will be the location of choice.

Hey Fikus I'm going to that DCFC (New Pornographers) show at Marymoor Park, so is Miscorrections. We should say hello.

Sho'nuff, I haven't decided how early we are going to get there yet, but I think that it will be safe to assume that my wife and I will be there from beginning to end. However, we are mostly interested in DCFC, which means we will be wandering during the opening acts.

To help identify us, here is a pic of my wife and I (we are on the left) at Sasquatch (with my friend Randy and Tommy from the Boards):

Edit:

No offense meant with the Seattle music scene comment, present company is often excluded (until proven otherwise). Generally, we are just missing the SF Bay Area :(

It would be cool if they did a Doolittle show one night and then a regular show for the second date. But I'm not complaining. I'll certainly take as much Pixies as I can get in any form they want to present themselves.

My guess is while the shows will contain all the Doolittle material (the album and the b sides) it won't ONLY be that material, that would be a pretty short set, especially for the $70 or so after charges these shows are going to cost. At recent shows they've started playing stuff they didn't play the last time around ("Cecilia Ann", "Dig For Fire", "Rock Music", "Boom Chicka Boom") plus I would bet stuff like "Vamos" (Joey's moment), "Gigantic" (Kim's moment) and "Where Is My Mind?" (every jackass who wants to go "wooo"''s moment) will be included.

boarderwoozel3
07-28-2009, 02:37 PM
Totally. I assumed the shows were going to be full length but Doolittle-centric. No matter what happens it's going to be sweet. Heres a non-Doolittle tour setlist from Isle of Wright fest Jun. 13:

01 U-Mass
02 Ed Is Dead
03 Nimrod's Son
04 Bone Machine
05 Dig For Fire
06 Velouria
07 Winterlong
08 Allison
09 Monkey Gone To Heaven
10 In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song)
11 Here Comes Your Man
12 Head On
13 Debaser
14 Wave Of Mutilation
15 Gouge Away
16 Vamos
17 Hey
18 Tame
19 Caribou
20 Gigantic
21 Where Is My Mind?
22 Into The White

Given that's a festival, It's fair to assume we'll get ~25 songs/night. OMG this is so sweet. I can't wait to hear rarer stuff from Doolittle like Mr. Grieves, Crackity Jones, Dead, There Goes My Gun.... etc!!!

AlecEiffel
07-28-2009, 02:40 PM
Mr. Grieves is one of the Pixies songs that Frank Black busts out most often as a solo guy so I've seen it a bunch of times. I'm actually looking forward to Here Comes Your Man, even though it's a 'greatest hit'. Also, I will flip my shit for Weird At My School.

After seeing Underworld at The Fox there is no way I would miss The Pixies at this venue if I was any kind of a fan. Might check YYY's though...

well, they are like 65 dollars, but I didn't notice the little note that said that price included all service fees. I guess it's not that bad, I thought I was looking at an 85-90 dollar ticket for a minute there.

A little while ago I checked my Warfield stub and it was $45 before fees. So you're right the price really hasn't increased all that much.

I really like it when tour dates are announced, and then bam they're onsale within the same week. I can't remember the last time I waited so patiently for tickets to go on sale for something for this long.

second that. so glad I was at Coachella in '04 and then saw them later that fall at the Santa Barbara Bowl (which I don't think even sold out).

two nights at the Fox and $64.50 for GA and $50 for upstairs (which I didn't really care for last time I was there) is rough. Especially for Sunday/Monday dates.

might have to suck it up and go just on principle though. I listened to Doolittle all the way through on Sunday and was so pumped up by the end of it that I had to go do something active (went surfing). it's amazing how a 20-year old album is still so relevant.
