I don't have $1500 to have someone restore the data either

I took it to the mac store and that is what the dude told me...when you try and turn it on it just makes a clicking noise

fuck them. if it crashed, you still have a chance. throw it in the freezer for an hour or two, pull it out, stick it in an external and try to back it up from there. the HDD, not the entire laptop. its worked for me on one of my two drive crashes. the second one wouldnt even spin up.

Shit happened to my Ibook G4 lost everything, it still in my closet, my friend that works for Apple said these fuck tards at the genius bar try to get people to just fork over money for a new one, like I did, when yours is fixable but apple doesn't want to...

Find a third party apple fixer, wefixmacs is a good one...

TeamCoachellaHellYeah

the guy I spoke to at the genius bar was upfront...he told me apple would charge me an arm and a leg to repair it with a new hard drive...I am more worried about the data at this point...

well, heat and cold makes things expand and contract. in this case, it made the disc not immediately crash with the heads. so i was able to get what i needed.

if anything, its better than just spending 1500 right away.

try the freezer first. just rip the harddrive out (I've done this on both a powerbook and MBP it's a bit of a pain, but you can probably pull it out and put it back in without too much headache).

If that doesn't work. I'd whack it on the edge of a table, not too hard though...

Both of these methods have worked for me in the past when no software based solution has been able to solve the problem.

This is crazy....my wife dropping it on a wooden table is what caused it in the first place...

it may get knocked back in to place for a bit. you never know. i may try that with...oh wait. the problem with that one is that it wont even spin up to speed. you can hear it start, but it doesnt speed up. anyway, this is about you, not me.

thats two for the freezer. i thought it was bullshit too.

I had an old ipod that wouldn't spin up and whacking it worked. Don't ask me why.

Ask Mr. Nipples, he had a logic board problem said the Genius dude ($1000 bucks said apple), he took it to his mom's friend, opened up the case, sprayed solvent and air dried, works like new, just a thought, I had a HD put in to my iBook, payed close to 400, and it crashed a year later, I don't trust the genius bar anymore, unless you have applecare, which I bought for my new macbook...

Same here. Whacking it works. My odometer in my car doesn't work until I whack the dashboard. I feel like a fat Fonzie daily.

I've been treated incredibly well by them in the past... including 1800 dollars worth of repairs on a standard warranty and another few thousand on extended care. This covers everything from ipods, my iphone, a couple laptops and a desktop that I bought second hand.

I also get my shit back quickly and without event on almost every occasion. Both of the laptops I've purchased from them have lasted over 3 years with incredibly heavy use. I even sold my old powerbook for 800 bucks when i upgraded to my current MBP.

If the freezer doesn't work, try kissing the drive and telling it that you love it. Let your wife see you do this. Trust me!

Ok my first iBook lasted 4 years started giving me crap around the 3rd year, fixed the HD ($400), and a year later the same shit happened, maybe I have bad luck, my mom's iMac's screen had a line going across it, the dude fixed it for free even thought the original warranty was up, but now one of here USB slots doesn't work...

I've had only good experiences with them as well. Apple Care is the shit.

maybe I have bad luck

People that have bad luck with harddrives seem to REALLY have bad luck. I love my western digital drives, but others swear they fail constantly... Others love seagate, but I've had nothing but issues with 'em.

Fucking voodoo I tell you.

My iomega external has outlasted my last 3 PC's and 3 external drives that i have subsequently purchased.

It's certainly an interesting discussion if you can get away from the fanboys and the zealous critics. I know people that by Apple products only to use windows on them... I also know people that have a mac desktop running osx and a pc laptop.

A ton of my own personal projects and such can only function (without re-writing all of my code, and writing plugins myself) in linux or OSX. Linux just isn't convenient a lot of the time. That said, both my laptop and desktop triple boot into OSX, Windows, and Linux.

I have always had an incredible experience with Apple hardware. Sure, I might spend 300-500 more than I would on a comparable (probably uglier and clunkier) laptop... But it's made up for by their awesome warranty and support.

If I wasn't sold my apple desktop for next to free, I probably wouldn't have gone apple for a desktop... I probably would have built my own. But the price was too good...

I'm an alias...

That's how I roll. My mac is for my media and my pc is for my work (fiction writing and music writing) and play (games and porn).
