I feel that way about 75% of it. The 3-4 songs that are great, are really fucking incredible. The rest falls flat for me. I'm hoping for a home run for her next one. She certainly has the potential.

You probably won't get anything new from it beyond the fact that it works nicely as a summertime album.

I have it ranked so high because it keeps with my well-documented pop/jangle/distortion obsessions. It is incredibly addictive to me for those reasons. Given your well-documented obsessions, it probably doesn't get you in the same way.

Part of what I really like about the Phoenix record is the production. There is something bizarre about it...its very much constructed and polished and immobile, but it works and still breathes despite this fact. I didn't do a very good job describing it, but that is part of what I found so interesting about it.

I really don't get TPOBPAH. They sounded so exceedingly average to me, and I was a bit surprised they were getting a good deal of attention. I listened to it twice in a 2-month span and that's it, now I don't even remember what it sounded like. All I remember is... "average." But I think it could be worth another try, I'll have to redownload it.

Edit: Speaking of summertime albums though, Wavvves has become a great soundtrack to my beachtime adventures, he's suddenly making me quite proud to be a San Diegan. I do miss Nathan's old band though, Fantastic Magic. But I'm starting to grow into this album, I used to have a lot of hard feeling towards it.

It's not as pulse-pounding as a lot of the Black Keys' material, true.

I don't know. Maybe. Fucked Up are so fun live, but I did see them at Coachella and I don't know if I'll have another chance to see Antlers this year. Maybe I'll split sets.

The videos I've seen of Antlers haven't been terribly convincing... Seems like they are still trying to get their footing live.

Not to monopolize this thread, but is there an album that I may be missing out on that I should devote some time to?

Absolutely:

* The Whitest Boy Alive - Rules

The record is a shinning example of jazzy "downtempo" dance rock. It's less explosive and frenetic than Phoenix but compensated by Erlend Oye's delivery, which is like a fucking godsend. It's got the most piercingly clean guitar sound I've heard on record in ages to boot.

Case in point: "1517"

5uGAZFL30Xg

* Julie Doiron - I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day

This is probably more up your alley; in a year where St. Vincent and Marnie Stern have been making a name for guitar shredding female indie rock singers everywhere, this canadian former Mount Eerie and Okkervil River collaborator's newest release has flown virtually under the radar. She's got a voice that reminds me of Feist in some ways, and the skill to take a drifting melody and turn it into a heavy dirge the next. The best example of this is this song:

"Heavy Snow"

IyL_SkyKQmM

no love for Antony? that album is brill

Marco, you overlooked my list. :p

Saddened by the lack of love for Actor :nono

Frank, see below:

1) Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
2) Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
3) St. Vincent - Actor

Others I liked but am too lazy to rank: AC-MPP, Fever Ray - s/t, Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca, & YYYs - It's Blitz!.

Didn't love Neko Case - Middle Cyclone as much as anticipated.

wmgaretjax, I also need to thank you for the City Center mention. Wouldn't have been on my radar at all if it hadn't been for this message board. Could definitely make its way into my year-end top 20.

So much other stuff I haven't listened to yet. Joann is taking care of me as far as Tortoise and Wilco...I'll definitely be checking out your lists for where to go next. :)

I think you should give the City Center album a listen. The Sore Eros album is also full of really great pop tunes, like a subdued Ariel Pink. Very home recording, but super pleasant.

Listened to both of these today...thought the City Center album was really good, and wasn't crazy about the Sore Eros album. Hard to judge either on just one listen, though.

I knew someone was going to point out that I didn't have that on my list. I've been listening to it, for the last 2 months I believe, as part of playing it on my radio show, but since the songs are so damn bouncy, I'm limited to playing Haikuesque (When She Laughs) and Cry! Also, Moby got bumped off my top 20, but will probably be back.

I'm honestly surprised I have them so high too. I don't like any of The Decemberists previous work. When I heard a little of them at Sasquatch I was sort of intrigued. I like the concept of the rock opera, even though it could be a little over the top at certain points (and some of the guitar licks sound Bon Jovi-ish). I just found it to be surprisingly enjoyable. I'm not AS surprised I like the Asobi Seksu album.

If only I could rate live recordings....
Boredoms, put out another Seiichi album before 2010 and you have the fucking album of the decade.

Just for the record... that APTBS sure has grown on me. Not the kind of album you'd expect to take a multiple listens to get into, but I dunno, I'm just getting more and more into it, playing it all the time now. It is definitely moving higher on my list. It's not real special but it's way better than their first one.

When I first listened to APTBS, I kinda thought they were boring. Then I saw them open up for Holy Fuck was blown away. So I relistened and I enjoyed it, and it kept growing on me. I put on this new APTBS and it floored me from the get go. So far, Deadbeat is my favorite song of the year. At this point, unless Yeasayer releases their album before the end of the year, Im pretty sure APTBS is gonna be number 1. I can't wait to see them in October.

Also, I have listened to the new FLips a couple of times... and Waiting For The Planets is my number 2 song of the year. What a fucking song.

I definitely did not fall in love with APTBS until seeing their youtube videos of live performances. And even then, I became a lot more obsessed after seeing them at Coachella. But it's true that this LP just sounds so fucking good on its own as a record.

I'm still totally torn on whether I should see APTBS or Yo La Tengo on Oct 16th though, and this new album doesn't help... I am way more into APTBS's music, and their live show I assume is far more exciting, but I have never seen YLT before and I really should before they start getting too old... hmmmmm.

kreutz2112
09-18-2009, 03:56 PM
Yo La Tengo are excellent live. APTBS will come around again. This is only their first tour for this album. They came to SLC 3 times for the last one, all of which were excellent shows.

pancakespancakes
09-18-2009, 03:59 PM
Yeah that is a very good point. They tour an insane amount, and they will only continue that trend with the new album I'm sure.

I guess I should also mention though that APTBS are playing in a great venue that is about 300 cappacity, while Yo La Tengo are playing in a pretty mediocre one that holds about 2500. I think I'll just catch Yo La Tengo though...

But if any of you have any remote interest in Jim James, Conor Oberst and/or M. Ward - the Monsters of Folk about is really good. My expectations were pretty low for that and they have a dumb name.

Also if I had to choose between YLT and APTBS I would certainly go for the latter. YLT could play a far better set but they most likely won't. I was rather bored by them at Pitchfork 2006 because they filled their set with the more mellow, poppy, pretty happy songs rather than the noisy shoegaze rock songs.

What exactly is disappointing about the NASA album?

Maybe my expectations were too high. I really dig some tracks(Whachadoin comes to mind), but overall it was too scattershot for me to fully appreciate. I guess it just didn't do it for me as an album. That said, I still plan on giving it some more attention and another chance at redemption.

I have my Top 50 all set at the moment and I would quite like this year to end already because it's a really nice list as it is... but there are still probably 3-6 albums on the horizon for me still...

I haven't given my list much thought yet, but it will likely have a buch of the obvious albums already listed. I have not seen Embryonic listed in any of the above posts and that will find it's way into my list. So will the No Age and Destroyer EP's. I still have a bunch of listening to do though.

I noticed the lack of Emryonic too. A few people mentioned it but it was never very high on their lists. It's in the top five for me, definitely higher than the Dirty Projectors album. The only song I really like from that is Stillness is the Move.

Are you people making these ridiculously long lists serious? How meticulously do you think about this? Do you actually sit there and think "Hmmm I definitely like my #37 pick better than #36, but 34 and 35 - I just can't decide, it's still a tossup?"

Anyways, my favorite albums of the year were from grizzly bear, bibio, yyy's, raekwon, animal collective, prefuse 73 and mos def. Right now I'm enjoying the Bibio album most but that will surely change, just like it already has quite a few times this year...
